I won’t pass comment on the hotel - the pictures speak for themselves. The young man who ran the bar downstairs was pleasant and capable, as was the lady serving the breakfast.

This is my plee to you. DO NOT BOOK THIS HOTEL. Once we arrived we looked at the OUTSIDE of the hotel and immediately knew we had been conned, it looked NOTHING like the website at all. When we entered we could tell the owner had, had more than 2 drinks, then she tells us “it dosnt matter what room I put you it because there all the same”… WE BOOKED A DELUX ROOM BUT THERE ALL THE SAME????? she takes us upstairs which felt like they would break underneath us and had not been cleaned in a while. Then we entered our room, no gun Cabernet like advertised, no pull out dog like advertised, no were to put skis like advertised and it was NOT clean. My bed had black hair in it……IM A BLONDE so it WAS NOT MINE. to top it off the bathroom was disgusting and unclean. AND in the middle of the night when I felt something odd fall onto my face it was PART OF THE WALL THAT CRACKED IN THE NIGHT. DO NOT STAY HERE

I warn you, do not book this hotel!!!! I got there with my friends after 3 p.m. check in starts at 2 p.m. our room was not ready. the person who did the check-in told us to wait 2 minutes, went to the room, literally collected dirty towels and said that the room was ready. the bed linen wasn't changed!!! after the previous people, there was no toilet paper, there were no towels, when we asked about them, she said they were dried in the dryer and we should take them. We went to her and asked for clean bedding, that we could even change it ourselves, and she gave it to us, but the bedding was also dirty and she picked it up from the floor in the laundry room. so we told her to refund us the costs because nothing was prepared, she said she wouldn't refund the costs because we had already checked in and it was too late, we should contact booking.com and she told us to leave the hotel!!! now she said it several times and her behavior it was out of place, she was very unpleasant, she looked as if she was under the influence of alcohol or some other substance. !!! unprofessional service and in general I am shocked that this hotel is still under booking. com and is rented to people!!! I wouldn't keep animals there, let alone take money from people, it's a scam!!!! we had to find another place to stay

We were booked into this hotel for 2 nights. Despite standing outside for over an hour phoning and banging on the doors and windows, we got no answer. Our booking agent couldn't make contact either. After 2 hours we were allocated another property nearby which was great. While the Kirkmichael Hotel looks lovely in its photos on the website, in reality from the outside it looks dirty and run down. Some local residents were even surprised we were booked to stay there . We found out later the lady who runs it had "gone for a nap" After reading reviews on here I can see we definitely dodged a bullet.

This is the worst place I have had to stay in. It's absolutely filthy. There's no restaurant, and don't bother asking for breakfast as they couldn't even provide us with a clean cup, and the woman who served us tried twice. The breakfast room was horrible with sticky tables and dirty crockery. The bed linen was not fresh. In fact I'm not sure that the bedding had been changed from their previous victim. I had to ask for towels, they gave me dirty ones. I booked with Booking.com, and I'm in the process of trying to get a refund as this place is not fit to be taking anybody's money.

I hope to share our thoughts about our experiences in trying to stay here. We rang up, last year, to enquire about staying here. We agreed a price and the booking was verbally confirmed. A short while later I called back as I had not received any written confirmation and was told we were in the book and they were looking forward to seeing us. As time went by we made several attempts, in various forms, to make contact with the hotel to gain some formal confirmation, all went unanswered. With a few weeks to go before our stay we were pleased when our phone call was answered only to be told we had no booking. Thank fully were able to book somewhere else, but our attempts to discuss the issue were met with abuse and rudeness from the manager. On our visit to the area we were advised by locals that this happens regularly.

This hotel could be great, but…it wasn’t. We stayed for one night as a short post-Christmas break. I phoned up and spoke to the owner / manager to book and she assured me that the hotel was open and food/drink would be available- as it was very cold weather and the village is quite remote, we didn’t fancy having to drive to get dinner - and that she would be there to meet us when we arrived . We arrived late afternoon and the owner wasn’t there although we were assured by the barman that she would be there soon. We had a couple of drinks and were shown to our room. The room was okay, reasonably clean but a bit ‘tired’ looking. When we came down the owner was there. She introduced herself and proceeded to tell us how unwell she was but that she would make us dinner. We ordered and my husband had a steak. The owner (also chef) then told him that she made an amazing whisky sauce. When the food arrived, there was no sauce and no sign of the owner. It was like she’d disappeared off the face of the earth, including the next morning when she was supposed to cook breakfast but again, didn’t appear. I went looking for her and the whole place was like the Marie Celeste. We eventually went across the road to the village shop / cafe, where we got some breakfast. I genuinely struggled about whether to post this review as the owner was obviously unwell when we visited and it seems a bit mean but we did pay good money for a really disappointing and awkward time. The hotel itself could have been a bit cleaner and definitely needed some TLC. On a positive note, the food that we did have was lovely and the barman that helped us was very helpful but really, this is no way to run a business

Our recent visit to The Kirky Bar left me and my partner utterly disappointed and frustrated. Upon arriving at the restaurant, my partner and I were met with unwelcoming glances from both the staff and the clientele. The atmosphere was tense, and it seemed as though we were intruding on a private gathering rather than walking into a public dining space. The real shocker came when we encountered the manager, who was more interested in delivering an unsolicited lecture rather than ensuring a pleasant dining experience for us. Apparently, the sin we committed was not booking a table in advance. She then went on to say that all paces required booking (as if this was an absolute). After she said her peace she completely ignored us, leaving us to walk out awkwardly without saying anything. The ambience was as horrid as it was unwelcoming, it wasn't kept well (I would say it felt slightly un-hygenic) and the food didn't look particularly appetizing. Me and my partner had just gotten done hiking and went to the first pub we saw, too bad it was The Kirky Bar. Avoid this place like the plague, you will be glad you gave it a miss.

Avoid at all costs! Extremely rude front-of-house staff. Turned up without a reservation at 7:30pm and were told we needed to book. That's fair enough but the manner we were spoken to was appalling. I've honestly never been treated in that way in hospitality. Judging by the other reviews now, I'm glad we didn't get served as the food would have been as bad as the service.

Spannend. Würden wir nicht wieder machen.

We were staying locally for one night and thought we would try the local pub for food/drinks- we soon regretted that! It is clearly an establishment that only really welcomes locals and we felt completely out of place from the outset. (And I’d like to think we are friendly people). The place is dirty and full of flies-we picked drinks in sealed bottles as we didn’t trust anything else. The ladies toilets were disgusting (so I can only imagine how awful the gents would have been). We should have left at that point but made the bad decision to stay for food. No menus and only a whiteboard on which the choices got changed every few minutes (all items spelt wrong and everything £14.95!) My husbands meal was medicocre at best (frozen scampi and chips) mine was sent back twice and I left without eating anything (which was announced by the female ‘chef’ to the whole pub of locals very loudly - just to make sure everyone was aware). Because the local shop was now closed, my dinner consisted of some crisps and chocolate at our apartment when we walked back. This place should be avoided at all costs-it is a health hazard and the people running it are completely rude and clearly don’t care about customers in the slightest. I have never been so pleased to head home in my life! This is without question the worst establishment we have ever set foot in.

After phoning yesterday to find out if he had to book the afternoon tea, which was included in the deal, he was told they didn't do afternoon teas. Strange as it was in the deal. He then asked if he could trade for part of the evening meal and he was told no. The lady owner has put the phone down on me then refused to take calls, the same thing has happened with my son. Ate here while staying at the nearby Strathardle Inn while walking the Cateran Trail. We had pre-booked, which was just as well as the place was busy with tourists and locals. The owner (or at least the woman in charge) was doing a great job keeping everything going and keeping everyone happy more or less single-handedly - waiting at tables, running the bar and generally managing the situation really well despite the lack of staff. After a G&T at the bar we were shown to our table. There was a good choice of food and once we had chosen it came remarkably quickly considering the staffing shortage and how busy they were. It's pub type food but none the worse for that, and decent quality, quantity and very reasonably priced.I would have given five stars were it not for the group of three or four loud, sweary men who'd obviously come in straight from work. I know pubs had just opened and they were letting off steam, which is fair enough, but some of the language was not on given the number of children and families eating in the restaurant. I know it is probably their local but I think they should have been quietly asked to tone it down.Overall, however, a good experience and well done to the owner for keeping it going!

We stayed on a last minute break with 2 children. The staff were lovely and the room was spotless and spacious for 4 of us. However, I do feel there are improvements needed as this hotel could be a really lovely place to stay. The only thing that let our stay down was the food and service at dinner time. I don't want to criticise too much as I realise many places are trying to get themselves back on their feet following the impact of covid. The food was a bit bland and tasted a bit processed, although the soup was very good. Our waiter didn't really appear to be switched on and we had to ask a few times for different things, i.e. item missed off the order, forgetting to bring cutlery. They also started to get a bit short with us when we asked for things they had forgot. The breakfast, though tasty was luke warm, as was the coffee and tea. There aren't many choices for kids, perhaps pastries or fruit/yogurt may be a good idea. Good bar with lots of choices.

We visited the restaurant one evening whilst away on holiday, and it was absolutely fantastic! The fish pie was one of the best I’ve ever had and the venison burger with blue cheese was absolutely stunning. Proper homemade onion rings and huge portions of everything! Great service and reasonably priced. Well worth a visit, we will definitely go back when next in the area!

We stayed nearby and stopped off for a cold beer after being out for a walk. Nice outdoor decking area to sit in the sunshine or you can sit out the front by the roadside.

I stayed here for five nights while doing the Cateran Trail. Gary arranged pick up and drop off times for each of our walks and supplied packed lunches. We were even able to arrange a detour to the local gin distillery. My friends and I really enjoyed the homemade, tasty food. The fish pie was delicious and it was great to see so many veggie options available. Our room was comfy and warm which was handy as it was very rainy.

Eight if us stayed at the Kirkmichael Hotel when doing the Cateran Trail. Gary and his staff could not have been more helpful or welcoming. The hotel arranged for baggage transfer and even offered to pick us up when we had gone slightly off the path. The food was very good and hearty. Our rooms were large, comfortable and quiet. We will return with the dog and do some more walking in the area.

My husband and I visited the kirkmichael hotel for a late lunch with our dog, the food was lovely, the chips especially really tasty, good homemade pub food and well priced considering the big portions. Our dog was made very welcome by the owners and even got a couple of biscuits. Very friendly people, we'll definitely be back next time we are in the area.

If you are looking for a relaxed stay with a warm welcome and great food this is the place for you. We booked in case we could ski but on the premise that if there was no snow we would still come. Great decision, there are lots of walks nearby and we (including our 15 year old) relaxed and enjoyed our night here. Gary checked out the skiing on the Monday and offered to call ahead and check for sure(we could have got some skiing in but weren't organised enough in the end). Great breakfast too. Hoping to come back when there is snow. It's a gem.

We ate here 3 times during our stay in Kirkmichael and it was great every time. Between the 9 of us we sampled pretty much everything from the menu. The fish and chips are outstanding, really light batter and the chips are to die for! The venison pie and haddock mornay specials on our last visit were fantastic! Great hospitality from the owners who made us feel very welcome!

We are really glad we found the Kirky. It reminded us so much of many superb English pubs which provide excellent Sunday lunches. We were lucky that we were there on the last Sunday in the month when the carvery was on. The roasts were splendid as were all the accompaniments. Highly recommend this pub/restaurant. Perhaps if the good news spreads then every Sunday might be possible.

Stopped for a cup,of tea and a cake. Quickly told to sit anywhere as the cafe was not busy. A bubbly waitress took our order of a pot of tea and a Mango Tango flavoured tea, a cake and a scone. Drinks arrived but the milk for the tea had turned. It was quickly replaced along with a second pot of tea free of charge. (Never going to be able to drink all that tea) The Mango Tango tea was fabulous. We had to go and ask if we could have our cakes as they had forgotten. The cakes were very very nice. So apart from the dodgy milk and memory, it was very nice.

Just opened last Thursday so small teething problems but I'm sure it will be a great little bar as the staff were very attentive. The upstairs lounge looks great btw. Will visit again when back down.

Fantastic place with wonderful service. I went there on a cold November day and ordered the most delicious caramel apple crumble to take away and they threw in some custard in a separate container. Lovely staff and a lovely shop.

Two waitresses, one young and cheerful one not so. Similarly my wife's Apple Pie light, moist and tasty, my Almond slice not so. Tea served in coffee cups, toilet facilities a bit primitive, and not cheap.
