We've been eating and drinking at The Kingsmead since it opened, it's our favourite family pub until this week. Prices have significantly increased, which was eventually to be expected, however it was a big jump and the quality has also reduced. I often have fish and chips which has always been the same great standard, this week I received 2 dry pieces of small fish, and the batter was poor and flavourless. I didn't complain as was with my daughter, but husband wasn't impressed with his chicken burger either.

Had the dusted calamari for a starter. Very hard to chew on. It was frozen. For a starter that costed £7.75 you want to eat fresh calamari. Main was a Mangalorian curry. Overall good but rice was not fresh. Again for £14 you want freshly cooked rice. I don’t mind paying the price if and when the food is top notch

It was our second time here for food, this time it was a roast, a Easter Sunday roast. In all honesty it was like having a school dinner roast, it was TERRIBLE. The stuffing (which cost extra for 2 balls was clearly that cheap frozen stuffing, the gravy was completely tasteless, and the roaster parsnips looked like they had been boiled. I honestly do not understand how you can mess up a roast THAT badly. I will never be returning again. This place is disgusting. Please have a look at my photos and tell me that the parsnips aren’t boiled. The pigs in blankets was like £3 for 2 Small sausages. Completely let down by this place. Also the cauliflower cheese was just cauliflower covered in grated cheese.

Lovely pub but disappointed with the kids meal. Tiny bowl of pasta for 6.75 and garlic bread starter was £4.25. Very expensive for what she had. Also had a brownie for dessert. She is only 8 and not a big eater. Had to come home and make her sone more food. 🙄 adult roasts were ok but potatoes were soggy and not crispy. Sadly we won’t be heading back in a hurry.

Enjoyed an excellent plate of expertly cooked liver with fabulous rashers of bacon, beautiful mashed potato and a delicious dark gravy. The side dish of buttered green vegetables included carefully cooked and well buttered curly kale and green beans. We were served a good and properly chilled Chilean Sauvignon and an excellent cask ale - McMullens IPA. Starters, mains and drinks for two came to a reasonable £70. Very happy to positively recommend this great pub/restaurant.

Pleasant atmosphere and lovely decor Lunch was anticipated with pleasure. However, the service was very slow - we arrived at 1.00pm and by 2.45 were still waiting for our dessert to arrive. The food was cooked well but the portions were very small and I was still hungry after my main course - the Cod Loin. This was described as being accompanied by Green Beans and Spinach but in the end consisted of 3 beans and a spinach leaf. The potato croquttes were very small and not very filling. My Tarte Tatin dessert was very tasty, it's just a shame it took over 30 minutes to arrive.

We go to The Kings Meade fairly regularly and the food is always good, what you would expect from a pub, it is well frequented and comfortable but watch your bills if you have soft drinks. I ordered Cranberry and Orange mixed and it came in a pint glass I ordered a second and when the bill came they cost £12 each which is a bit exorbitant, and was nearly as much as the alcahol that had been purchased when we queried the bill we were told that they used 4 mixer size Cranberry and Orange bottles each to make up the drink and that was the cost, I stated that if they were doing that they should have made them into smaller drinks ( one of each ) which would have been a more reasonable price but still expensive way of serving Cranberry and Orange mix.

All the younger staff were so lovely and welcoming , food arrived quickly and was lovely. I’d never been here before and was thinking the whole time I can’t wait to return for a Sunday roast, until my 1 year old son was playing up and threw some food on the floor ( as toddlers do) I picked up most of what I could see however An older waitress (curly hair glasses) was glaring at us for a while, came over with a dustpan and brush to sweep it up I said ‘ I’m so sorry thank you’ to which she replied with extreme attitude ‘I just don’t want people to tread it everywhere’ dead straight face, rude and un welcoming and made me feel extremely uncomfortable. I will not be returning and I just wanted to outline this particular waitress as the rest were so so lovely and helpful; just the one individual that ruined our visit.

I have been here several times before and it's been great but not tonight. The service, although friendly, was very slow. I'm assuming due to a lack of staff. I ordered, as a main, the winter Caesar with addition of halloumi. There was no hint of Caesar about the salad and I had to ask for a dressing. The halloumi was so dry and hard most of it was inedible. I mentioned this to the waitress and to be fair I was offered a mini dessert or coffee neither of which I wanted. Can't believe we were still charged for the additional halloumi! I've received a reply to the above review but the contact email sent is not recognised.

We went here for our family boxing day meal and we will not be returning. Starters were rushed through as soon as we sat down... we hadnt even received our first drink until after the starters... which was luke warm and bland.... my daughter also didnt get any starters because she has cows milk protein allergy and soya protein allergy... this was not communicated to me prior to the meal and all we ordered her was garlic bread... they provided no alternative! Table service quite slow for drinks but very nice girl just think she needed help. Mains was awful being overcooked on the meats or under on the veg, again very bland and luke warm... a few of us didnt eat much of the mains. Again my daugher wasnt served any food until i asked and all she was plated up was mash and cauliflour... like where were the other veg?? This was all pre ordered also! Desserts were probably the best part of the meal altho some complaints on the cheesecake have a mousse texture. Bit strange we sent in a preorder form but they got all the desserts mixed up or wrong. And to top it off at the end of the meal we were given the bill with the deposit not being taken off. Overall appaulling and also need to cater for dairy & soya free customers.

We had a shared starter, and and 4 really enjoyable main meals, with family chat. When asked if we wanted desserts my granddaughters partner also asked for 2 more beers for himself and my husband and another bottle of wine for myself and my granddaughter. His order was refused! My granddaughters partner had his passport details and driving licence details on his phone, which the manager / duty manager would not except. We politely questioned this with the management and was told that you wiil be challenged under 21, which is absolutely fine! The manager/ duty manager excuse was, that you have been served by several different staff tonight! Well my thoughts are dont blame your staff! What a shame! What should have been a lovely evening was spoilt!

We called and made a reservation for Sunday Roast. Car Parking: Ample parking Accessibility: Wheelchair friendly and step free. WC’s are located on the same floor as entrance and bar. Outdoor space: Yes Table Service: Yes, order at the bar or use the table QR code. Our small group ordered using the App. Super easy and convenient to use. Everyone took care of their own bill 💸 . Staff: Lots of staff, attentive, polite and smiling. 10 out of 10. Kids: Kid friendly venue with high chairs available. Food: We all ordered off the Sunday Roast menu and we weren’t disappointed. Our booking was for 3pm. Our food arrived in good time as did our drinks. Everyone’s dishes were juicy and flavoursome. Yummy gravy and veggies. Veggies were perfectly cooked as were the meat elements. Topped with a massive Yorkshire pudding. 10 out of 10. We travelled from London by train, disembarking at Ware station to meet our mates. So it’s a short walk from the station. They said, they’ve never had a bad roast there. So we had high expectations. Venue: Clean and tidy. A golfing facility is behind the pub. Coffee: They make a decent flat white. The coffee was well made, milk was at a perfect temperature and the coffee flavour was robust. Very enjoyable. WC’s: Down a set of stairs. They were well decorated, lit, clean, tidy and were NOT smelly. Ample soap in the dispensers. One bit of improvement for mgt: Suggest staff remove their service aprons before using the WC’s. Look forward to visiting again soon.
