We have been here many times for a Sunday roast and in the evening, however the service and food fell short of my expectation, booked a table, starters ordered amd arrived but not what the menu stated, then waited nearly 20 minutes for our main course when the table of 4 that came in after us got theirs before us , we all ordered the same roast so no real excuses, a bit disappointed with service and the food was luke warm, didnt stay for dessert.

**“You need to control the children.”* Ah yes, the warm, welcoming words every parent dreams of hearing as they sit down for a nice family meal in what's *allegedly* a family-friendly pub. From the moment we arrived, it became glaringly obvious that this establishment believes children should be seen, not heard, and preferably left at home in a soundproof bubble. Let’s set the scene: food? Surprisingly decent. Chips crispy, burgers juicy, peas that didn’t look like they’d been dug up last week. Compliments to the chef—who I assume is kept chained in the basement, well away from the judgmental glares of the front-of-house staff. But heaven forbid a child walks to the toilet. One footstep out of their seat and suddenly the manager appears like a ninja librarian with a frown that could curdle milk. “You need to control the children,” she hissed, as though we’d unleashed a gang of wild raccoons to raid the dessert counter. Throwing food? Not a single chip launched. Not even a rogue crumb. Unless a pea rolled off a plate and they mistook it for a grenade, I can only assume the mere presence of youth offended their delicate sensibilities. The irony of the manager coming over to discuss our upset, only to be interrupted by her own child roaming free and requesting the phone from her mother, double standards much? We came for a fun, relaxed meal. We left feeling like we’d tried to host a toddler rave in a retirement library. If you're looking for a place to enjoy food while making your kids feel like mini-fugitives on the run, this is the pub for you!

Popped in here while I was waiting for a car repair at the local Halfords. I had tea and a bacon roll which cost me nearly £10! The lukewarm tea came in a pot (two small tea cups worth) and the tiniest bacon roll I've seen in a long time arrived 20 minutes later, which surprised me as the place was almost empty! Staff were friendly enough but not good value for money.

A fairly typical pub in layout and choice. The friend we went with recommended the place but although the hound staff were very cheerful and willing, the food was inconsistent. My husband’s gammon was fine but my fish and chips were so dry; the fish was very thin and disappointing that it was hard to find under the batter! It’s such standard meal it shouldn’t be difficult to produce, surely?

The food was cold, steak sent back as over cooked, came back just the same and cold again too. Fish and chips were tepid, hence batter was going soggy and fish dry, overcooked. The food was left for ages on counter before delivered to the table. Wrote to customer services twice, still no reply after 3 weeks. Waitresses were nice and apologetic. There were 9 of us and only 2 people enjoyed their food. A shame as it was a 70th birthday Lunch. Food used to be good but not anymore, will not be going back.

As per previous post we found the manager to be surly and grumpy and she stropped around. Hospitality is about greeting customers and being amiable and polite . It seemed we were an annoyance for turning up. The prices ? Well , for what is basically a wetherspoons plate and cook by numbers ( could see the plating charts in the kitchen ) type of place i think the prices are way over what they should be . 20 quid for a small slice of salmon and some bought in sachet of sauce is a lot ! I know , i work in kitchens and a whole side of salmon is not much more than 20 quid ! I dont know where the positive views come from as it is basically a wetherspoons . Food was ok and cooked ok but hard to go wrong when its already made when it arrives. Will not be returning as theres many more places to eat where the staff care about the customer experience

Very unprofessional and unwelcoming Manager. We used to go in here all the time and loved it, it was our go to place for cosy pub lunches. Went in recently and couldn’t believe how much it had changed, most of the staff were rude and unwelcoming, the one girl who did serve us seemed really sweet but a bit miserable and unhappy (later we experienced the manager and then understood why the staff were so unhappy), they promote themselves as a dog friendly pub but we were told to keep the dog on a tight lead under the table (our dog is a quiet old soul, so wouldn't have been any bother anyway), and they were pretty unaccommodating to my toddler. Our 18 month old toddler accidentally knocked over her drink and a lady came over huffing & puffing (we later found out this was the manager), I laughed initially because I thought she was joking but she glared at me and said something under her breathe, it was very awkward when it was clearly an accident! We dine out a lot with our toddler and have never experienced such unwelcoming behaviour! It was a truly awful experience and we won’t be heading back anytime soon! They’ve lost a loyal customer!

There's so many things I love about this pub - lovely ambience, very warm and friendly staff, the food, on average, is very nice - my only niggle - charging £5.00 for a side vegetable that contains 1 piece of broccoli and some green tasteless stuff (no idea what it is) is not my idea of value for money. The other niggle - their grill was broken once - not their fault and unforeseen, but at least offer customers a discount or drink - it's not our fault other. Overall, the good food, friendliness and ambience far outweigh the negative, and I will continue visiting here

I had a really disappointing experience at The Kings Mead. To start, they didn’t have the option my girlfriend wanted, which was frustrating as we were left at the table waiting to deliberate our choice for far too long, how about being told what option isn't available when we get to our table? The food we ordered was terrible – the beef rib was 90% fat and almost impossible to cut, while the broccoli was undercooked and hard. We also saw the chef in the kitchen decanting food straight from takeaway tubs into the microwave and onto plates – not what you'd expect from a restaurant charging £90 for a meal. The drinks were another letdown. We ordered two Pepsi Max drinks, and they were so filled with ice it felt like a con. On a positive note, the wait staff were friendly and attentive, but it was clear they were undertrained, which made the overall experience feel even more unprofessional. For the price we paid, we expected much better than microwaved food and a quarter glass of pepsi. Overall the experience is a massive let down and we definitely won’t be returning.

A great Christmas meal with good service.Ella was very helpful. The parsnip soup and the Brie and cranberry tart were both fantastic and our meal favourites. I think the duck needed plum or orange sauce, or maybe some gravy as it was a fraction dry. I liked the veg. The confit duck pie was unusual and tasty. I think without a long handled spoon it was hard to get to the chocolate sponge in the glass without eating a lot of the cream. A desert plate would have been more practical if less attractive. It was a shame there were no Rivertown cask beers. The McMullen IPA was better than I expected, but some really hoppy beers would be nice.

What I don't agree with is that the prices for the beer aren't on the menu. Just tell you what they have. £5.65 for a pint of pilsner and a Pepsi max draft at £3.35 is pretty steep. My partner had the prawn cocktail as a main. It was a bit disappointing as the prawns were very small and about ten of them. The dish mainly consisted of chopped lettuce and tomato. I had the burger which was very good but very few chips with it. We have been several times to the King's Mead. It is expensive and I left feeling that it's no longer value for money I'm sorry to say. The staff and service were very good but at a hundred and twenty quid for four people as I say disappointing.

Disappointing. The King's Mead has really gone down hill since the last time I reviewed a year ago. £100+ meal for 2, though they don't have any of the menu that you actually want, like the steak frites or chicken burger, which is surprising for a Saturday night and which I feel is a ploy to get you to buy the £30 steak. Staff is nice but inattentive, had to ask for cutlery and flag someone down for more drinks. Used to love coming to the King's Mead and since we are moving out of walking distance, figured we'd give it one last chance, but honestly debated leaving after the first drink. Really disappointing as the King's Mead used to be a great dining experience, but perhaps they've changed management or staff? Wish I'd spent my money on somewhere else.

Wedding Reception Venue On 3rd May 2025, we decided to book the whole of the Fox and Hounds for our wedding reception venue. From the start of organising the wedding with Bianca, the food, guest numbers (we had 80, which dropped to 70) the DJ's, dance area and we also had Silver Service wedding singers, running around pretending to be waiters in the middle of the Fox and Hounds real team. I don't think I could have chosen a better venue and as any bride I was hoping all would go well, they excelled themselves and every request we asked for was met. The food was absolutely delicious, the bar staff so friendly and efficient, the atmosphere, perfect. We had the fish and chips cones in the evening after the main meal at the Fox and Hounds and although many guests who were staying with us at Hanbury Manor the night before, said although Hanbury Manor's Fish and Chips were lovely, the Fish and Chips at the Fox and Hounds, were out of this world. We chose the buffet for our main meal at the Fox and Hounds and all our guests said the fish, lamb , vegetarian and gluten free options were absolutely gorgeous. Considering this was the second time around for us and we had chosen big hotels for our previous weddings, costing £20k to £30k, we would recommend the Fox and Hounds, if you have up to 80 guests and want a fun, intimate, private area with a lovely garden for just you and your guests, with great food, lots of music and dancing, a place for all ages and don't want to pay crazy prices, we had a free bar, drinks on arrival, wine on the table, amazing hot food buffet, evening food, we went for pricey wine and food from the choices and the cost for the whole venue was just under £10k. Bianca, the chef, and her whole team were amazing and we can't thank them enough!

I assume he was staff because he didn't have a drink!. I had the great house music in one ear and his noise in the other!. I always thought that the customers comfort and enjoyment was a pubs priority, apparently not in this pub!
