We always enjoy this pub and so pleased the community have kept it going. It’s full of character and has a delightful garden at the back. This Sunday we had a Turkey roast which was fantastic; there were no fewer than 8 vegetables served with it!! Well kept real ale too. Highly recommended.

Lovely historic pub with a choice of two gravity beers, both in good shape. Would receive a five-star review, but experience was spoilt by the idiotic thump-and-bleep noise being blasted out from the serving area (and inexplicably piped into the restaurant). Fair enough if you're running a nightclub aimed at the under-thirties; totally inappropriate for a community pub that should be suitable for all ages.

The Low has only just reopened inside - it remains v welcoming (with social distancing) and there is some additional seating outside, under a gazebo - or on the front benches if the sun shines. The roast beef was outstanding and beyond your average ‘pub grub’. The beef was perfectly pink, delicious Yorkshire puds, and a good selection of vegetables came with all the trimmings. It was a generous portion and we will certainly be returning before long - thank you!Jane & David

We were here for an event at the Village Hall and so rang the pub on the day and booked for 6pm, which gave us just enough time. Imagine our shock when we tried to order to be told that they didn't do food until 6.30. As we had drinks by then we didn't feel we could go somewhere else, but we were annoyed that we had planned ahead to avoid problems and still ended up in a rush. So I started my Tripadvisor rating at 2 or 3, but they have crept up to a 4 because they were so lovely, and although they didn't cook for us at 6 they did so as quickly as they could, and everything was delicious. Also, of course, the pub is unique and really has to be seen if you are in the area. In fact, what a lovely place all round, everyone at the Village Hall was also lovely, the concert was great, and we look forward to returning.

A one-off pub with great beer, food and atmosphere.. Saw recent review panning the fact that the reviewer was asked by staff not to eat food that they had brought with them and downgrading their review accordingly. Not sure, but I haven't been to many (read any) restaurants, or pubs that serve food, where bringing your own food was acceptable.

This pub has just won an award. We saw the story on Look East. It is a Community run pub and has so many beautiful characteristic features. There are several rooms with large high backed seats. The Tap Room is amazing, people were taking photos. Good range of local beers and other drinks available. Good varied menu available with daily specials on a board. As it was lunchtime, we opted for the sandwiches. Door stops really. Lovely fresh soft bread filled and I mean filled, with either cheddar & homemade pickle, local ham, brie & bacon and smoke salmon, with a small salad garnish. There is a very large garden. Parking is restricted, but you can park on the road. The staff were friendly and helpful. They do have rooms, but not sure what they are like. Looked good on their leaflet.

We went here because we saw that it had won an award as the most unspoiled pub in the country, and yes, when you walk in you are stepping back into the 16th Century. There is no bar, just about half a dozen barrels in the tap room. I had a very pleasant pint of Wolfes Bitter. Reasonably priced at £3.30.We sat outside and starting eating our sandwiches, only to be told by a chinless wonder that they don't like you eating your own food. Sure enough a girl young enough to be my daughter came out and asked us to stop eating our sandwiches. She could have turned a blind eye, but this put a dampener on our visit and we left shortly afterwards. Didn't try their food - we had brought our own.

After a brilliant experience previously, this time we returned with our three dogs to stay in the downstairs room in the lovely 'annex', which back in August, we had been shown around by Emma. The room was so comfortable, clean and modern - so quiet too. Plenty of room for two of us, plus the three dogs, as it has a roomy hallway between the bedroom, bathroom and if needed (we didn't use it) the second bedroom with bunks. We ate there on both nights of our stay and the food, wine, service and ambience, as always, was excellent! Pubs like this are hard to find - an absolute gem. Needless to say, we will be back! The welcome and service was outstanding, as was the food. Our table was reserved in a little side room - I had requested space as we had our dogs wtih us (it was perfect). Our vegan and vegatarian daughters were given plenty of choice and Emma discussed their requirements happily. The food was enjoyed by all. I have been going to this beautiful and unique pub for over 20yrs and I was so disappointed last night when what should have been a celebratory meal turned into a complete disaster. Having checked out the menu on the website when I booked a few days before, and deciding on steaks, ribs etc, we arrived to find a very reduced "menu" on the table with just a few main course choices. At this point we learnt that there had been a staff walk out hence the limited menu. After waiting 45mins our food was delivered. My 2yr old grandson would have eaten my complete portion and still have been hungry ! All four meals were just about big enough as starters and very poor quality. After some "discussion" the manageress/cook didn't charge for the food but the experience completely destroyed our enjoyment of what should have been a special evening. I had left my telephone number with my booking and should have been called if there was a problem offering the advertised menus.

Where do I start, the pub itself is the most beautiful, old world pub you can imagine, like stepping back in time, could have sat in the settles by the fire all day, every day and the tap room is fantastic. The accommodation was really good, very comfy, the beds great and the rooms very quiet. The food really was top class, absolutely gorgeous, dinner superb and breakfasts just as good. Unfortunately we had a medical emergency on our first night (nothing to do with the pub) and needed an ambulance, the staff were just unbelievably good, really went beyond the pale to help us, we recovered we had a second, peaceful night here and enjoyed more good food and ale, the thing that made this a cut above the rest was however the staff. I have never met such welcoming, friendly and helpful staff in my life, the young ladies in the bar and restaurant, and the chef are assets the owner should be proud of, I genuinely don't think I've met better staff anywhere before. Forty years having elapsed, I felt it time to see what decades of "modernising" had inflicted on this unique establishment. I could not have been more delighted to see that all the features that made the Low House so special have been lovingly maintained. The tap room, with excellent ales from the wood, the old wooden settles, creating an intimate atmosphere, and the labyrinthine trek to the outhouse are all here. An evening here is a journey into an earlier age. The staff are charming and friendly and the food excellent. When the crush of drinkers had suddenly vanished to attend "Casino Night" in the village hall, we had the place to ourselves...apart, that it, from the spirits of an earlier age who, I believe, were happy to have us back.

The latest attempt to run it have raised food prices considerably..OK for the tourist trade but most locals will just use the Royal OAk at the top of the hill. bBeer is also about 50 pence a pint dearer than the competition. Despite complaining we were told there were no others available as they were all reserved. We ordered drinks and our two courses. Some 45 minutes later our starter arrived. At that time a table for four had vacated and we asked to move, but were told it was reserved! The starter was ok, but later the roast lamb arrived. Ugh! It was like mutton, tough and tasteless and complained again about the table, the time we had to wait and the poor food. They did deduct our drinks bill and we paid and left, without leaving a service charge. By the way, nearly two hours after arriving, and guess what? The larger table next to us was still empty! We could have sat there after all.A poor pub, with poor organisation and clearly not a chef on site.We went there on a recommendation as its only 30 mins drive, but will certainly not be going back.

If being picky, perhaps a bigger wine range with some stretch- eg a NZ Sauvignon rather than just Chilean. But that was all I could find to pick at.Enjoy!

10 multi generation family visited while staying nearby in a barn rental. What a stunning pub - not just full of character, but one of the warmest welcomes we have ever had from the wonderful staff and simply superb three course dinner for all 10 of us. The real ale fans will get excited by the range in the tap room..but the food from what I gather is new management really should be tasted. The apple crumble was voted by eaters of decades of apple crumbles as the best they have ever had!

We have dined here twice in the past 2 weeks since the new management took over and with the new menu. Great stuff both times! Excellent and friendly staff, fantastic local produce and the menu has changes and specials so that even though we've dined twice in two weeks there was plenty on offer. We've so far tried the king prawn risotto, ham and pea soup, chicken pate, pork belly, the lowhouse burger and the roast dinners. We are very impressed!! How lucky to have this on our doorstep. Highly recommend.

The summer party children ordered pizzas and what arrived was cheese on toast covered with tinned tomatoes and they were NOT fooled by this and most went back to the kitchen. My meal was ok and the rest of us felt it was just about adequate. In October we visited with two friends and I had regaled them about the superb meat pies. BIG MISTAKE! Firstly there isn't the choice that there used to be and secondly with the best will in the world and sharpest nashers, we simply couldn't chew through the gristle. The whole lot went back uneaten and we were not charged. We had no faith to order dessert and came home hungry and had beans on toast - LOVELY! Come on The Low House, what on earth has gone wrong as you had a winning formula and standard. Somewhere along the way you have lost both alas.

Lunchtime visit with friends to a venue we know but have not visited in quite a while. Out of the 4 meals ordered 1 had to be sent back because the 'creamy' mash had lumps of uncooked potato, a second (steak and mushroom pie) consisted of completely inedible meat (hard and gristly), the third (steak and ale) contained some elements similar to the S&K, whilst the final meal (fish pie) was simply lacking in any form of culinary interest/delight.The mashed raw potato was replaced and effusive apologies offered with an offer of coffee (not taken up) and we were not charged for the inedible S&K.I cannot believe that anyone with a modicum of culinary skill was in attendance in the kitchen today. But the waitress dealt with our concerns in a reasonable manner.

What a great old pub. The day we went the fire was light and from the look of it most of the village was standing around chatting and enjoying the well kept beer (Adnams). We got our drinks and was shown to a lovely table for 6 in the side room booking advised as was busy. As said before in some of the other reviews the food selection is not massive but is for a small village pub, the portion sizes are ample too big in my wife case no dessert. The ribs are to die for and the duck salad WOW. Got chatting to the landlords who told us about the history of the pub and also about the decoration are planning in the winter months landlords said its work in progress. Really looking forward for a return visit we next visiting friends.

Despite some of the not-very-nice reviews, we read between the lines and were not at all disappointed. Four of us had booked and were made welcome and led to a good-size table for four. The food was not the largest selection, but it was really well presented and more than ample. Everything we had for starters was superb, and the mains (rib-eye, rump, pulled-pork pie and home-made lasagne with proper meat were great and well presented. Service was first class and pricing was good, especially when you see what some places charge for steak nowadays. The beer had a great selection and that and other drinks were not overpriced. My advice, ignore the moaners and go and have a good meal and drink in a unique atmosphere and surroundings.

In April 2014 I celebrated my Birthday at the Low House / Kings Head and immediately decided that it was my favourite pub in the world. The tap room was charming, the food delicious, the staff were jolly, it's dog friendly and the atmosphere was superb. Within 2 months we'd moved to Suffolk and our guests would always be treated to a trip to the Low House for dinner - a real treat. Many of my Facebook friends having seen the pictures I posted couldn't wait to visit. Our latest 2 visits however have not been the usual 1st class experience. We no longer receive the lovely warm welcome, The food is a long way short of what it used to be and the fantastic atmosphere has gone. The first time we had such a poor experience (about 1 month ago) we thought they could just be having a bad day and they did say to us that they were expecting a coach load of people for a barbecue so I just imagined that normal service was probably not up to standard as they were busy preparing for the later barbecue customers - not that I was particularly impressed with that notion. My last visit though confirmed that this is the standard we are to expect from now on. So very sadly the Low House / Kings Head is no longer my favourite pub. It will take some excellent reviews or reassurances from the management there to entice me to come back. What do you reckon Kings Head? It would be nice to know that comments on here were taken on board and that efforts made to improve. I have noticed however that only the positive feedback from other customers below warranted a response from the Kings Head and the not so favourable ones seem to have been left ignored.

We've been visiting the King's Head (known locally as the Low House) since the 1990s. You can't help falling in love with its unique time-warp layout and atmosphere and we've had some very enjoyable meals here, so I don't want to knock it too much.Today we live in north Norfolk so it's a 90 mile round trip to the Low House, but it and Laxfield are so charming the drive is (usually) no hardship. In fact I went there on a motorcycle ride out with some friends just a month or two previously and had a very pleasant time. Those who hadn't been there before thought the place marvellous and the food very acceptable (lunchtime snack meals). There's no bar, just a tap room where you order drinks and food. The garden at the back is lovely and well kept, although some of the 'outdoor rooms' off it are looking a bit scruffy and redundant these days. The pub is owned by the Adnams brewery and perhaps shows the lack of the personal touch that would give it a lift if it was a free house. But as it's probably a jewel in the crown and a cash cow for Adnams I doubt they will ever sell it. Pity. The interior is divided up into unfashionably small but original rooms, including a wonderful tall settle wrapped around the fire in the room you enter from the street. It's easy to imagine people of long ago coming in out of the bitter winter chill to huddle and warm themselves by the fire over a tankard of mulled ale.Dogs are welcome at the Low House everywhere but the dining room, something that non-doggie customers might bear in mind. When we took our immaculately well behaved dog into the side room where the long table is etched with shove ha'penny boards or some such, two men at the other small table sniffily observed that they had just finished their meal, as if granting us permission to be in there with our filthy, bacteria-emitting (not) hound!Last Sunday (August 16th 2015) we thought a trip down to Suffolk would be just the thing, with a short stroll around the very attractive allotments to sharpen our appetites for lunch - might sound bizarre, but they really are lovely, with all sorts of veg and flowers being grown. Typically Suffolk charm.Since roasts were on offer - choice of chicken, beef or lamb - and it wasn't too hot, we sat out in the garden and opted for two beef and one lamb. What arrived was a surprise and a disappointment: thick, unappealing slabs of meat piled on top of some underdone roast spuds, surrounded by gravy that was redolent of an Oxo cube in water, with a little cornflour to (barely) thicken it. A so-so Yorkshire pudding completed the plate. Supplementary vegetables, in the form of broccoli, cauliflower and sliced carrots arrived separately. They might have been meant to be al dente, but they were just rubbery and dull. Two lots of cutlery arrived for three of us and we had to ask for the default mint and horseradish sauces - for lamb and beef - really? The meat was tasty enough, just somewhat off-putting by being so clumsily carved and there was no hint of rareness - and we got there at opening time, so the roasts hadn't had time to get tired and brown from standing under warming lamps or whatever. Roast spuds can be a delight if they are well-roasted and crisp on the outside. Most of these weren't, by a long shot.We were so disappointed at having come such a long way for such an indifferent meal that no-one had any enthusiasm for pudding - and the selection was pretty lacklustre in any case. When I was asked if everything was ok when paying the bill I had to make my feelings known, which came as a bit of a surprise to the young woman who asked. She said the chef was the same as ever and that she would convey my concerns to the kitchen. She also expressed the hope our experience would not put us off coming again.I don't think it will, but the lovely Low House is feeling a bit unloved and taking its customers for granted right now, so I think we'll give it a few months to take a good long, hard look at its operation before we make our way there again.

We have been visiting this beautiful pub for many years. The last time we ate here, about 16 months ago the food was lovely, which, combined with the lovely setting, made for a memorable evening. This time, sadly, the food was really not up to scratch. The vegetables were not only undercooked, the broccoli in particular looked as if it had been in the back of the fridge for days. The crab salad was better and the sticky toffee pudding reasonable. The beer is still excellent and the setting lovely. A shame

Today I had the worst, so called, 'fish pie' at the Low House, Laxfield. This fish pie had two pieces of white fish and the remainder included 2 mussels and about 5 baby squid - which I could not eat. Surely if they want to include what we recognise as 'sea food', (Mediterranean or otherwise) they should not call it 'fish pie'. It was certainly the worst meal I have ever had at any pub, restaurant or private home.1st July 2015

The Low House still retains the character of a pub from the turn of 19th Century, there is no bar but a tap room where all drinks are served from, the main seating area is dominated by a large fire place with cosy pew seating and tiled floors, it really is a step back in history. Following a pint of Adnam's Southwold we sat down to eat, the food is traditional pub grub and our party opted for Steak and Kidney pie, Fish pie and Lasagne all home made. The food was tasty, plentiful and good value and the staff accommodating and pleasant. Would definitely visit again.

We were staying within a very short walk of the Low House and decided to view first hand its Tap Room, now almost unique. A genuine old fashioned country pub as it turned out which served a really good pint of Adnams bitter from the wood. The only disappointment was in the choice of food. We viewed the menu board and made our selection but the waitress informed us that several of the dishes we fancied were not available. Could have understood if it was busy but we were the only diners , early on a Wed evening in March. My wife chose a dish with a baked goats cheese topping only to be told there was no goats cheese. Accepted a hummus substitute topping, a bad choice it turned out, it was distinctly rubbery and inedible as far as my wife was concerned.Overall verdict :- good pub/beer, hopefully it was just an unfortunate night on the food side. Probably better than average but didn't warrant a very good.

Had lunch here today, not having been for several years. The pub used to be one of our favourites. Oh dear! Such a disappointment! Not a free house any more, so only Adnams to choose from, and the pint that my hubby had was flat! The menu looked good though, and the chef was kind enough to make me a pie that had no egg-wash on it, as I am allergic to egg. We both had steak and ale pies and they tasted lovely, but my meat had a lot of grissle in. Couldn't have a dessert as all contained egg, except for the crumble, but the chef hadn't made one that day. We were the only diners. The place seemed dead and lacked the old atmosphere. Sad, as it used to be our fave pub! It isn't a patch on what it used to be. Bring back the craft ales and ambience and the customers will return. As it is, I don't hold out much hope for this once-lovely pub!
