Travelling alone, I stayed one night in this wonderful historic hotel, and received a very good evening meal in the restaurant. The location is absolutely central (with excellent parking) and could not be better for enjoying the charms of Southwell and surrounds. The owners have carried out redecoration and a thorough spring-clean during lockdown, which made everything feel fresh and welcoming and showed off all the historical features and antiquities to their best. Everything was in tip-top condition. My room was bright, fresh and very comfortable and my dog was made very welcome. Breakfast was excellent with lots of fresh fruit. The staff were dedicated and attentive. I highly recommend.

Went here with a group of friends for an early Christmas lunch. The King Charles dining room looks the part but every few minutes there is a clock chiming, there are loads of them throughout the Hotel, after a while I found this very annoying. When my meal arrived it was luke warm at best and I eventually found a couple of roast potatoes hiding under the turkey which was cold. The 3 sprouts were raw and inedible. A friend and I asked if we could have some more roast potatoes and the waitress eventually returned with 2 small potatoes in a bowl telling us this was all she had left. What? This is supposed to be a restaurant. I ordered Christmas pudding and when it arrived I remarked to the waitress that they had forgotten to put the Christmas pudding on the plate. The very small round individual pudding had clearly been microwaved with the consistency of rubber and God alone knows what the sauce was that accompanied it because it resemble the texture of custard but was white and tasteless. Retiring to the bar we ordered coffee and having ordered a latte with a double shot I was served one with only a single shot which was replaced by another very weak coffee which I could not drink. The room we were in was so cold that several of the ladies had to put their coats on whilst eating. All in all a very poor dining experience which at £21.95 for 2 courses is not cheap. I most certainly will not be back.

Hi we booked the Minster room for a birthday celebration for 18 people for a Sunday lunchtime. I would like to thank the the staff for "herding cats " successfully throughout the event, always with a smile and great professionalism. The set up, the food all very good. The previous night in the bar (drink with food) the service and courtesy shown was of stellar proportions - never experienced better. The serving staff are a credit to the hotel. For the management - -have to add that the terrible smell, in the corridor next to reception, often reported here, didn't emerge until right at the very end. The management do need to address that urgently as it is of show stopping proportions - -it is so bad, you could not possibly give the venue 5 stars. Nb I did not stay at this hotel/pub

I had dinner here as part of a large group, so we had ordered all our menu choices well in advance. The food was superb, though the portion sizes were rather small (the sort of experience when you look at the plate of food and think 'is that all?'), and the white-gloved waiters did a good job serving despite the difficulties of dealing with a table of some 20 people. But when it came to settling the bill we found that they had got the record of how many people had had 2-course or 3-course meals completely wrong. It should have been easy - they knew beforehand who had ordered which meals, the prices were set and just depended on how many courses you had. We paid for any drinks in cash when ordered. I wasn't involved in the negotiations about the bill, but they went on for ages, with the management appearing to be very uncooperative. They lost a good deal of goodwill (and tips) over this, which was a shame because the waiting staff had been pretty good. I have mixed feelings about recommending this place.

We were ravenous and steak beconed. They were thick, large and perfectly cooked. Chips homemade, large and very good The chocolate pud and vanilla ice cream finished the meal and nearly finished me. An exceptionally good honest dinner.

We went to Southwell to visit the Minster. Afterwards, totally by chance, we went to the Saracens Head and ordered a light lunch. This proved to be a very good choice. I had beef bourguignon, mash and veg. The girls had Quiche and chips. The food was piping hot served by pleasant staff in elegant surroundings. We felt that we were valued customer, well done. We would recommend this hostelry to everyone.

We recently stayed at The Saracens Head Hotel, and ate in their restaurant. The food is well cooked, always hot and delicious. We always eat here when we stay as the quality of the food served is always excellent, so why eat anywhere else? A definite treat and something I always look forward to

A dining room for grown ups, with beautifully wood paneling and an "olde world" charm and elegance. Tasty food, well presented and beautifully served. Not a huge menu but, what we had was well worth the money. I'd be delighted to eat there again.

Six of us met for Sunday lunch - what a lovely place! The building itself is worth a visit. The staff were friendly, helpful and down-to-earth while being and looking very professional. The food was delicious, well cooked, beautifully presented and very good value for money. I wish I lived closer.

I stayed at the Saracens Head hotel in early June 2015 and opted to eat at The King Charles Restaurant accordingly. I have to admit that I was a little bit doubtful, not because there is any outwardly reason why I would not have enjoyed it, but rather because I knew that 100 metres away was 'Piano' - one of the nicest restaurants I can recommend. That said, The King Charles Restaurant did NOT disappoint. It easily matches Piano. The food was excellent, cooked to perfection, presented beautifully, and the service was nice and prompt throughout. Granted, it was quiet that night, but nevertheless, it was still very good indeed. The restaurant itself is beautiful and, though it is in the newer part of the building, it exudes historical interest and charm. You really felt as though you had gone back in time. Anyone passing through Southwell is in for a treat, because you have two great restaurants in The King Charles Restaurant and Piano a mere stones-throw apart from one another.

Lovely and comfy inside with lots of charm and character. The staff we meet were really nice and friendly. Meal lovely, the only thing let it down was the drink prices, £7 for a pint beer and a small coke is steep.

This was a Plan B because the number one in Southwell was closed for renovations. But what a Plan B it turned out to be! Lovely atmosphere, great service. Food in the bar was outstanding. Had driven 30 miles to visit Southwell and it's such a lovely friendly place. Next time we visit, the Saracen's will be our Plan A! Lovely place!

Dinner was pleasant enough, but lacked a special feel. Coffee was horribly weak. Breakfast was the usual, but choice of fruit basic and cooked plate arrived while I was still eating fruit.

I went in with Dad for lunch yesterday. There were two people in the whole restaurant and three members of staff.. all started ok the girl came over gave us our menus and explained the menu so far so good we placed our order the food came out all fine then we waited and waited and waited for someone to come and take our plates and ask if we wanted anything else..when we eventually got some service the guy asked if we wanted the bill.. I said no we would like another drink and the pudding list so he duly gave us the menu again and then we sat and waited and waited and waited I was so cross we got up paid the bill and went. Its the most awful service I have ever come across.
