The King and Thai in West Dorset

So, we had our first takeaway from the King & Thai this evening, after getting a recommendation from family & I’m having great difficulty explaining how terrible it was. The starter of tempura prawns? Really thick, stodgy batter & for £6.95, I was expecting more than 4. The roast duck with Crispy noodles was the main disappointment. The duck was severely over cooked & dry & the dish arrived with only crispy noodles & a small pot of sauce. Nothing else, no garnish. A tiny over cooked duck breast on a tiny bed of crispy noodles.The squid was ok but again over cooked & chewy, with the batter way too thick & totally masking the flavour of the squid. Compared to the other Thai restaurant in town (which we’ve frequented often), this was awful, massively overpriced (much more in comparison) and thoroughly disappointing. Don’t waste your money.

Yet again a wonderful meal at this fabulous Thai restaurant. Beef Panaeng curry was fantastic. Excellent friendly service and all very safe with good precautions at this time. Can’t wait to go again. Well Done

First of all let's get the covid stuff out of the way. I've eaten in many restaurants, cafes and eateries during the crisis and they have all responded in different ways. Some place leave you thinking they are aren't taken this seriously enough and others it's like Orwell meets Kafka in a sandwich shop. The King and Thai have struck a balance where they having given a ll of thought to safety and social distancing without it being obtrusive. My family and I felt totally safe.On to the good stuff , this is a restaurant worth travelling to try.The decor is non-descript but warm and clean the service is excellent , attentive with being unnecessarily fussy and in your face. The food is outstanding , everything is home made and freshly cooked to order using local including the desserts and the sauces. The only issue is deciding what to choose. You find cheaper but it would difficult to find better value.The King and Thai is a great family run business and pride they take in it deserves your support.

Excellent fresh food, nicely prepared. Great, attentive service. We'll be back. Delicious chicken satay starter. Excellent king prawn red curries. £60 for two, including starter, main course and a drink and a £5 tip!

had an amazing authentic pad thai take away from The king and Thai restaurant we had 1 spicy and 1 not so spicy is was delicous,my husband cycled home with it to poundbury and it was still piping hot.would highly recommend supporting this local thai restaurant

We have been to this restaurant on numerous occasions both for lunch and dinner. Proprietor is a very ameanable and attentive host while his wife runs the kitchen. Love the sweetcorn fritters and chicken satay. The thai green curry is simply the best we’ve ever tasted. Excellent standards and good covid measures in place. Lunch menu is an absolute bargain.

Food was simply excellent, with fresh top quality ingredients and authentic Thai flavors. Had the 3 course lunch menu: Toast starter was savoury and crispy, pad Thai mains was sweet tangy and spicy, great noodle texture. Dessert was fried bananas with homemade ice cream, it was warm, crispy and delicious. Staff was very friendly, and it's clear they are taking covid seriously. Well deserves its good reviews. Would definitely come back!

Everything about the meal was amazing, the lunch set menu was definitely a bargain as you're stuffed by the end of the meal! Excellent customer service and properly managed with the COVID safety measures. The quality and flavours of the food were at its highest, would definitely be visiting again

Ordered a takeaway yesterday for dinner as staying close by in a b and b..very accomodating- arrived 15 mins before closing and placed an order.Hot and piping food, prepared quicklyDelicious rice, Penang curry and the chicken with Thai holy basil.Lovely service and delicious food! We came here in a group of around 10 one lunchtime to celebrate a friends birthday. Thai is never my first choice nor really ever a choice at all when I’m considering somewhere to dine. However, it was not the birthday girl so Thai it was. I’ve only ever had Thai cuisine once before in Bath. That was not a great experience. That said, having tried this place I will definitely be returning for more. The food was incredible. Everything was fresh and the lunchtime set menu was extremely good value for money. The service was also excellent with friendly and attentive staff. Highly recommended.

You will receive a warm ‘Thai’ welcome in this small restaurant. It is brightly decorated and spotlessly clean. The owner and his staff are very friendly and our whole meal had a ‘family’ atmosphere. There is the usual extensive choice of Thai dishes, which when they arrived were exquisitely presented and deliciously cooked. We loved their spicy food and can thoroughly recommend it. We will return.

Waiter who served us was brilliant. Very friendly, continuously topping up our wine and chatting to us. Food came out quick and was good. I had a fried prawn dish and the batter was a bit on the heavy side but still lovely.

My wife & I often choose to visit the King & Thai when visiting Dorchester from Bridport for shopping. The proprietor is professional and polite - making each visit a pleasure. There are plenty of choices on the Menu and the prices for a 3 course lunch are very reasonable. It is obvious that many people are regular customers at this Thai restaurant - I would thoroughly recommend it!

We had a last minute stay in Dorchester and were recommended this restaurant by Mark at the Beggars Knap across the road. It was great, delicate fragrant well cooked food in an attractive restaurant, served to us by an attentive host.Really nice, will come again.

Every 8 weeks while our 2 woolly dogs are having their cut & blow-dry, we head for lunch at the King and Thai. This has happened for the past 5 years and we've NEVER been disappointed!

We met our son there who lives in Yeovil and had a really lovely 3 course meal. Really enjoyed it and the presentation was amazing as well! We shall return! The service was good as well.

We discovered this restaurant on a wet night in Dorchester. The service was impeccable and the food was delicious. The restaurant was clean and well presented. Traditional Thai music added to the calm ambience. We look forward to returning when we are next in the Dorchester area.

WE had a lovely 3 course lunch here for 12.95.Starter was chicken satay with a very tasty peanut sauce , mains we a deliciously spicy fried beef with chilli and basil and there was a delightful mango sorbet to finish.Strongly recommended to try this restaurant.

Really lovely restaurant - perfectly attentive staff and great food. We were there for just a quick Dinner and will certainly be visiting again to sample more of the menu. Lots of fish dishes which I heartily approve of. The soup was particularly delicious. Well done the King and Thai.

My husband spotted a sign near the traffic lights advertising this place, so we went in search and found and it didn't disappoint! 3 courses £12.95 beautiful flavours and fresh ingredients, good friendly service too! Definitely our new lunchtime place when we visit Dorchester.

I love Asian food but over the years I had given up on finding quality home cooked Asian food in Dorset until I came here. The lunch special menu gave evening meal quality at excellent daytime value. Most unexpected.

Came to The King & Thai for an evening meal with a friend that had eaten there previously and highly recommended it.

First visit and we were not disappointed. I have to say, that the photos do not do the food justice at all. The food is all presently beautifully and simply without any fuss. Extremely clean restaurant and toilet facilities. Service with a smile and a traditional family business feel with all the flare. We will most definitely be back with friends.

We went for dinner on Bank holiday Sunday, without booking. We were welcomed by our charming host. The food was all delicious, we chose a number of our favourite Thai dishes, Pad Thai, Massaman Chicken, sticky rice, toffee bananas. All were well cooked and very tasty. We will defiinitely go again. Well done!

Redelijk authentiek Thais eten met een redelijke smaak, meer kan ik er niet van maken. Het eten is niet verkeerd maar de eigenaar lijkt erop gespitst iedereen zo snel mogelijk de deur uit te krijgen. We voelden ons vooral portemonnee en geen gast.

Found this little gem after a visit to the cinema. Slightly off the beaten track but will now be a regular favourite. Simple tasteful decor. Varied authentic Thai menu with ethically sourced ingredients beautifully cooked. Good value and attentive service.

The menu offers the right balance of choice and achievable cooked-on-the-premises dishes. The service is super and the food truly delicious. There isn't much room inside and it is popular so best to book, especially at weekends.

Having visited many Thai restaurants in our travels around Britain, this is by far the best.... everything is cooked from fresh organic ingredients by a very talented Thai Lady who cooks with care... certainly unusual now to find a Restaurant where money does not come first.

Really enjoyable meal last night at the King and Thai, all food tastes very fresh and not oily or greasy at all. Restaurant was fully booked and had a great ambience. Nice, simple decor and a friendly host. All within a reasonable budget of just over £20 per head for starter, main and a drink each, couldn't fault it in any way. See you again soon

We thought it was going to be a meal in a chain restaurant until we saw the reviews of this restaurant and realised it was just round the corner from our hotel. So glad we found it. The owner was extremely welcoming and the food was absolutely excellent. Our only complaint is that it's hundreds of miles from where we live!

Service was excellent and food was very tasty but for me a Thai green curry should have a good kick but we found all the food a bit mild (although I think the rest of the family may have appreciated that!!)

Absolutely authentic from the dress of the staff down to the delicately made fruit flowers decorating the plate. The 3 course for £12.95 was well worth it. I recommend ordering prawn pad Thai or if you like a kick #14 on the mains. Succulent with spicy excellence.

My friend and I visited on a Tuesday evening. The owner a genuine lovely man took care of us throughout. We chose the set menu, starter and dessert pic included but got too excited for the main I forgot. Excellent value and a great way to try more than one dish. Really delicious.

This was the 3rd time that my son took me here. As always we were very welcomed got a nice table with menu were we had a lot of privacy. The staff was very good and so was the menu. We ordered fish with rice and vegetables and the portions were enough for us.

We were visiting the area and thought we would try the King and Thai. We had a lovely meal. Very nicely presented and very fragrant. The coconut ice cream was gorgeous. We had the £23 set menu. This is a little more than I would pay (up North). Husband enjoyed the beef but it was a bit spicy for me. I would happily return. The hosts were lovely. Thank you.

Meal out with my parents - what a treat - have only ever heard good things about this restaurant but never got around to going until this weekend - wish I had tried it long ago now - its fantastic - lovely fresh food - so much choice on the menu it was hard to choose - presented beautifully - very very tasty! Will definitely be going back and we also brought the take away menu home for future use! Well worth a visit. Spotlessly clean and very friendly staff.

One of the best Thai meals I have ever had! The restaurant is warm and cosy and the service swift. The menu is small meaning what they cook they cook well. 100% recommend.

Absolutely brilliant was invited not actually sure I liked Thai as only previous experience of Thai was pre packed meals but OMG fresh Thai was off the scale soooo good ! Flavoursome vibrant tasty will definitely go back ! The waiter was friendly and informative

My wife and I have just had the pleasure of a very fine Thai set menu lunch. I have to be honest I am not a set menu person, often feeling it is yesterday’s leftovers.

We chose this Restaurant from the great reviews on TripAdvisor as my daughter specifically wanted a lovely Thai meal for her Birthday. We were all very impressed by the gorgeous flavours and freshness of every dish that we ordered. The owner was great fun and very friendly and it is his wife who prepares all the freshly cooked meals so deliciously. We live 45 minutes away but will definately be back for more. Well what can I say but a perfect experience the food is to die for, you can tell it’s all freshly made not greasy like some Chinese food can be. We had 3 courses including the satay chicken and spring rolls for starters. These were absolutely perfect to start our meal with. I had the Pad Gra Prau which was very fragrant and spicy but been a chilli fiend I could have had it a lot spicier but never the less the actual taste of it was fantastic. My wife had the Pad Khee Mao noodles with chicken and she devoured it. All in all the food is excellent the service is first class and very friendly and the price is fantastic. DO NOT HESITATE TO EAT HERE YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT!!!!! I’ve taken a takeaway menu as I think I’ve found my new favourite place to eat.

Superb organic ethically sourced Food consistently good. Lunchtime or evening. Cooked to perfection and from scratch by a true professional. The service is excellent and everything is very reasonably priced. Cannot fault this beautifully run Restaurant in any way. You can book but ring them direct or go in as the website takes you to another restaurant up north somewhere which has now closed...this one has not thankfully.

This is our favourite Thai restaurant for lunch, 3 courses for an excellent price. The choice of dishes is unusually wide for a lunch menu and all are beautifully cooked and presented. Great, very friendly service as well.

We having been eating here for many years and it never disappoints. There is such a lovely welcome and the service is kind and gentle. The food, the presentation and the tastes are always delightful - we love Thai food. The place is always very clean and tidy. Take care a bit with the internet to make sure you are looking at The King and Thai Dorchester - there is another King and Thai (elsewhere in UK) which claims to be shut - it isn't this Thai and we nearly made that mistake. It is open for business and well worth a visit. Just wished we lived a little closer to Dorchester to visit more often.

Had a great meal tonight with friends. Really looked after by staff and owner and food was to a really high standard. Particularly enjoyed the massaman curry.

Good lunch main course for £8.00. Visited with my three year old and seven year old. Pointed clearly towards the starter portion of chicken satay and said we wanted two starter portions. As a side we asked for rice as well as that then made a meal for our boys.

Recently ate here for a family meal and get together, food was good, nice atmosphere and helpful staff. One of the best places to eat in Dorchester and wouldn’t hesitate in recommending...although probably better for a smaller table as the restaurant is small and not really well equipped for large groups.

We had a set menu for two which had a good mix of dishes, and tasted delicious. The restaurant has simple modern decoration, and the service was great. Was surprised it wasnt busier on a Friday night, and will definitely visit again.

Arrived without booking but made welcome and seated with ten minutes by the owner. We onlyhad a main course as his banquet menu was too much for us on this occaision! As usual very good service andthe food delicious, served quickly considering a busy Saturday evening. We use this restaurant two to three times a year. We would recommend this very clean and family run restaurant to all visitors and locals. One negative comment, the Singa beer too expensive at £5.80? ....visited Saturday 15 eptember 2018...
