The Kilderkin in Edinburgh, City of

I absolutely love this place. My wife and I have been in Scotland for a week and have been waiting to have some real bar service. We couldn't possibly be happier. If you get to sit at the bar with Carlos and Linds then you will undoubtedly have an amazing night. Easily the best bar service we've had between Edinburgh and Glasgow. Cannot recommend it enough. AND you don't have to go down four flights of stairs to go to the bathroom and it's also not 90 degrees inside, great bonuses. Thank you Carlos and Linds, forever, we will never forget you guys. This is a great bar.

Discovered this through a happy accident as was staying nearby and needed a break from work. The haggis has one of the most interesting sauces I’ve had and the whisky flight was great!

Carlos and Lindz are absolutely awesome. My husband and I are in from the States and truly gave us the best bar experience we’ve had since arriving in Scotland. They’ll be the reason we return to Kilderkin. Tip them well, they’re worth it.

Great service and explanation of what they offer. We didn’t eat. Only had drinks and my wife Aperol spritz was great and the whisky was, well, it was great!

we have been twice in one week! That is how good this place is! I absolutely love the booths and the vegan burger is perfect, the Onion rings are amazing and the service is quick! My husband loved the bangers and mash, ate every last bite!

The food is excellent. Beautifully cooked fish and chips with salad, and a cheesecake to die for. My friend loved the soup.

We were in Edinburgh for 3 nights and spent 3 of them in the pub which was very good bar Staff were very friendly can highly recommend we will be definitely coming back 😀 👍

Food was just ok. Service was mediocre as well. Bartender was very nice though. An employee was smoking right outside the back door and the smoke was coming in the pub making for a very unpleasant experience.

The mushroom & leek soup was delicious! Great quiet place to enjoy a nice beer or whisky

A group of us came to see our pal play music with our kids, as this is one of few pubs in the city that has live music and allows children. Well we couldn't have been made to feel less welcome. I understand that kids can be loud, but they're ages 3-8 and were having fun. We did try and calm them down a bit but they weren't feral! If you don't want kids in your pub at dinner time, change your rules. Also, we had only just sat down with our first drink and a regular there commented negatively on our parenting! The staff allowed this! Overall Shocking service from the barman, allowing us to buy another round but telling us we had to leave after?! Just cut us off? Quite happy to keep taking our money and continue to make us feel unwelcome. The kids have been before and loved it. And to be honest for the price the food was very disappointing aswell. Obviously we will not be back and will not be recommending to anyone.

Lovely little pub, very friendly staff

We didn't end up trying their food but the service was great. We were welcomed instantly by the staff and they gave us great drinks. As a warning, the kitchen closes at 6.

A very correct pub, good value for money, with a typical pub menu, simple but delicious. There were 4 of us and we each tried one of the main dishes on the menu and everything was good. Correct prices for Edinburgh, which is an expensive city. Quiet environment. Advisable.

Great place for a relaxing lunch after walking the Royal Mile. The staff were friendly and fun to talk to, the food and ale were fantastic, and, of course, the scotch was phenomenal. We highly recommend a stop here when you are in Edinburgh!

I cannot recommend Kilderkin enough. Such a warm and friendly atmosphere. The bar staff who served my friends and me were just amazing. Alex behind the bar mixes a terrific Bloody Mary, and impressively remembered exactly how I like mine mixed when I made a return visit to the pub. If you visit you won't regret it!

Great location right next to Holyrood on the Royal Mile. Reasonable prices and value, and as such gets very busy.

The Kilderkin isn't what you make it or what you might expect; it's a pub. It is what it is. It's a safe pub and I visit often but the blessing and curse it carries is the location at the foot of the Royal Mile. It's not a tourist trap, which is great. It's even really well priced for a pub in such a great location. On the other hand, if you're looking for something historic, thematic or holiday memorable then you might be disappointed. The range of drinks is fine, better than a franchise but not remarkable. The food is okay and they wisely switch to pizzas and side dishes for dinner to keep things memorable. I've tried a few, never had a reason to complain, but never a reason to write home. I'm giving the Kilderkin an average review and that feels a bit harsh, but there's such a wide variety of great, good, poor and avoid at all costs nearby so please consider average to be a mark of safety, predictability and reassurance. Oh, the staff are friendly and the art weirdly charismatic! [January 23 - thought the pizzas today looked more generous] [April 23 - New look pizza once again caught my eye! Might give them another go!] [July 23 - New management with stricter opening hours, kitchen closed earlier than expected so may have to re-review. Noticed brownies, though! ] [September 23 - New owner making significant changes. I might try the food again] [January 24 - still not tried the new menu but the back room is so much warmer and nicer now] [May 24 - tried the new food menu and it's good enough]

The service was really fast, the portions were too big for my liking, but overall a really pleasant experience. Wasn't used to ordering at the bar but that's fine with me! The pub itself is really nice, a great atmosphere.

Excellent food, caters for vegans and carnivores. Service from remarkable Rob was outstanding when we paused for a coffee break despite my awkward order - so good that we returned to eat on our way back down the hill. Our exhausted dog appreciated being welcomed too!

We found it by chance and stopped to have some beers. I liked it because being a little further away it is quieter and you could find a table easily. Good menu and good service!

Fish and chips was terrible, it was about 10 deep fried prawns, mostly batter. Since when is that fish!

Looked at a few places, glad we picked this one on a whim. Food was delicious and definitely with a unique flare; chorizo is not an ingredient I saw on a lot of other menus. My husband has bangers&mash (with chorizo gravy) and I had cheese, leek, and chorizo soup, both with a LOT of flavor. Definitely a welcome twist to the usual food found in the area. Staff was friendly and humorous, I hope to come again.

Really liked this place in Edinburgh for a conference, and this place was round the corner after a long journey. I didn't feel much like wandering around looking for food, so I walked into the first place I came to, so pleased I did. I had a great night with great food and service

Great place for lunch or dinner. The chicken diablo wrap was amazing and the loaded fries too. Price was reasonable and the service was quick. This place is a nice hidden gem for tourists. It is walking distance from the HOHO bus and next to The People's museum. I definitely recommend this awesome tavern.

Been at Kilderkin every time I visit Scotland. It’s in a great spot that’s easy to get to and not too busy. Last time in April, I went to Kilderkin several times, enjoyed a tasty chimichanga, previously had other food, snacks, drinks etc. Food and drinks are always perfect! The food is always tasty, and the staff are friendly, absolutely fun and always made me giggle. They’re great at suggesting the best drinks for you. I would go back every time.

The music brought me in, the staff kept me, and the beer fulfilled me!! It has a great mixture of atmosphere and music, fun, and friendliness.

Not only were the bartenders fun, funny and handsome. They had the best music!!! Classic rock! I would strongly recommend this place to anyone.

For a first time trip in Scotland, this pub added onto the positive experience. It was an unintentional visit but I’m very glad I got to experience it. I ordered the topped chips, which came with chorizo, a nice sauce, some garnish and I think slices of sausage. Not only had I never come across this as a topping for chips before, but they were beautiful. It’s only now I wish I had tried something else based on how good the chips were. And as for the customer service, I couldn’t have asked for anything better. The bartender was so kind enough as to charge up my dying phone for me, and was quite possibly the definition of welcoming. I had a quick interaction with one of the kitchen staff and he too was very kind. Overall, this is a very friendly staffed pub and I would absolutely consider coming back if I ever venture out to Edinburgh again.

Taken over 2 weeks ago. Great bar menu including local Scottish food, haggis and black pudding wraps along with traditional meals.

I would say this is a night time place. Great live music. In the day i went it was full of local politicians chatting and debating very loudly and was hugely off putting.

We stumbled into this place by incident and we had an awesome lunch there. I had the haggis, neeps and tatties and I loved my meal

We had some beers and the waiter made an effort to explain the type of beer to us and tried to speak to us in Spanish, very friendly and polite. Recommended!

Nice restaurant with good food and beer at a fair price

Pub typique à l'ambiance chaleureuse, un peu à l'écart de l'agitation du centre-ville. Nous avons juste pris une bière, mais c'était très sympa. Le serveur était très gentil et nous a fait goûter des bières pression pour que l'on puisse choisir.

Real shame this place has gone downhill after changing ownership

My husband and I tried to stop here since the door was open and they advertised being open for brunch. The bartender swore at us, telling us to get out. If they weren't open, he could have said that instead of resorting to profanity. A simple, "I'm sorry, but we're not open yet" would have been the appropriate response.

Very rude and unwelcoming place. My wife and I were walking by shortly before noon and saw lights on and a sign that said weekend brunch. Doors were open so we stopped in. We were immediately greeted with a “what the “f” are you doing in here, get out we’re closed!” Completely unnecessary especially since doors were unlocked. No hours posted outside, so he could have simply said sorry we’re not open yet. Walked down the street after that and found a much better friendly place.

Pub quiz was in action, somewhat desperately when I arrived so avoided it. Staff were friendly and helpful albeit with a wild manic edge to their demeanor so I was polite and circumspect then moved to the pre-booked back room to meet the people I intended. Not a bad venue that central in Edinburgh and the prices were relatively inoffensive.

The bar's ok but there are better within walking distance. The main problem is that they regularly open late, not at all, or close early so you can't plan a visit without having a good chance of being let down. Really sad as I'm sure this will be another case of "we tried everything" when they inevitably close for good.

Fantastic place to grab drinks in Edinburgh. Felt like a locals place and escape from the mob of tourists. Helpful staff and great atmosphere.

The atmosphere is relaxed and easygoing. Management and staff are very friendly and helpful. The food is pretty good - especially the fat chips which are wonderful! It’s good value for money. Tea/ coffees are also available and the beers are interesting and varied.
