What a gem of a beautiful old inn. Beautiful low exposed beams, old time atmosphere. Pre booked a group for Christmas lunch. Menu's booked in advance and no hitch. Service was reasonably fast, considering it was a busy time. Food delicious 😋 staff friendly. Highly recommended 👌 👍🏻

We had our Christmas work dinner at The Juggs last week. I was very impressed with both the quality of the food and the standard of service, particularly as they had to serve quite a large number of us all at the same time. Thanks for a great evening and I’d certainly recommend The Juggs.

I never write reviews but felt compelled…I phoned in the morning to book a table for two as wanted somewhere cosy to take my son for a rare evening together. I spoke to a friendly man on the phone explaining that I only wanted to book a table if he could ensure it was in the front section by the fire. He assured me that the table two under the clock next to the fire would be available at 6.30pm. When we arrived there was a couple sitting at said table with full drinks and cutlery, clearly waiting for their food. I checked in with the bar person who mumbled to follow him. He took us into a side room where there was a large party and tried to put us in the corner of this room. When I explained that I had called and specifically requested to sit in the bar by the fire he got defensive and admitted it was him who had taken my call but there was another couple who had already booked the table via the online booking. This seems a strange process, especially as you cannot guarantee a specific table when booking online which is why I phoned instead. He showed no apology or humility but just walked off. We decided not to stay so as we were leaving clearly stated why we were going. He suddenly changed his attitude and tried to accommodate us in the bar area but for us it was too late. I grew up in Kingston and have sporadically retuned over the past 30 years when walking or wanting a nice country pub but each and every time we are disappointed. There is an arrogance and superiority amongst staff which makes customers feel unwelcome and uncomfortable. They really need to address their customer service. I seriously believe that if it wasn’t for the pretty building and lovely location this 15th century pub would have closed down years ago. Hopefully one day it’ll be a positive experience…

One of the highlights of a long weekend stay! We were staying just outside Lewes for few days. Went on great 10 mile walk around Lewes. Came into this pub for lunch. From the start we were greeted with several very friendly and helpful staff. We were invited to sit at a table near the fire. Great place to see lots going on as pub was quite full. Great beer and wine. Great tasty food. Great atmosphere after a lovely long walk! The new owner and his wife were there. Good value for a great experience! Hope to visit area and pub again soon.

Cannot fault our experience at The Juggs..... we had an early Christmas dinner for a group of 8 and it was outstanding..... Tasty with so many dishes of veg and sides and the biggest plus.... the gravy!!! It was superb. Service was v attentive and we had an interval after the main (it was big plate of food) before dessert was served. 5* experience. Book early as v busy and can see why!!

Been a regular visitor over the years but hadn't been much for a couple of years. Then it was taken over by the current management earlier this year. It has returned to being a place to go back to. Very oldie worldie vibe with lots of genuine history in doors, though being tall I do have to remember to duck. The outdoor seating is lovely, particularly in warmer weather and there is a covered seating area. The food is much better and if the choice for vegetarians was better it would merit a five star rating for food. Lovely helpful staff. Good selection of beers etc.

We reserved a table for lunch on Saturday. The staff are very friendly and welcoming and the pub is very atmospheric. There’s a good range of food on the menu and it’s nice to see a pub still offering sandwiches. However, the food took so long to arrive and no one came and offered an apology or explanation. I appreciate it was a very busy time but we waited a long time. We sat down at 1.30, starters came quite quickly but mains took an hour to come. We didn’t get our main course until 2.45, which was an hour after we ordered. We will definitely be back as the food was delicious but will probably pick a slightly quieter time.

A great place for a pleasant meal in comfortable surroundings. A 15th century pub named after the headgear worn by the women carrying fish to market. The age of the place meant low ceilings (mind your head) but various nooks to enjoy your meal. We were shown to our table by a very personable young lady who dealt with our requests for information with friendly efficiency. We do not liked to be rushed and were thankful that this was the case. It was obvious that care had been taken to provide beautiful plates of food. One of our party had the short ribs the rest of us had the sea bass with the curried mussel broth. The broth was so subtle it allowed the sea bass to be the star of the dish. Anyone in the area for a holiday should give this lovely venue a try.

Fantastic food and generous portions. Had a roast dinner and it was very very good, value, taste excellent. Service 5 star as it was very busy. Atmosphere only let down by our table of two being in a spot where footfall was high and felt we were a little in the way rather than a cosy corner but that is luck of the draw and we did book late. . .ish.

Went to the juggs for a lovely Sunday roast this evening with my friend we also had scampi and chips and halloumi fries to share. The Sunday roast was flavourful, the beef was perfectly cooked, with mixed vegetables on the side to add of your choice, definitely the best Sunday roast I’ve had at a pub in a long time. The scampi and chips was a filling size and the freshly made tartar sauce was very flavourful. Lovely choices of wine to have with our dinner and lovely polite and joyful members of staff. Will definitely be returning to this pub and introducing to new people.

This is a beautiful looking pub, and would probably be nice for an evening summer drink. We went for lunch. The food was sadly mediocre. Not as good as many ready meals, or regular home cooked meals. The curry was bland and homogeneous. The burger was overly salty and otherwise tasteless with completely cold sauces and oddly rubbery beef. The lasagne was again bland, mushy and over salted. Some scampi were tasty, but mushy rather than plump and juicy. Even the pieces of biscuit with the ice cream were soggy. The skin on fries were pretty decent though, I liked the cheese cake, although it again was very salty. The inside atmosphere was okay, although the decor feels more like an old blokes drinking pub than a place expecting anyone and everyone. It didn't feel emotionally or physically warm. There was a smell of stale beer when we went in and the music was loud. The staff were great – very attentive, genuinely friendly, and a complete contrast to the food and atmosphere. It's a terrific location for a pub, and a beautiful building on the outside, but I think it needs some invigoration and zest, and a lot of love in the kitchen. Definitely would not recommend, unfortunately.

Sadly as a regular I won’t be eating again as the food was not the standard of the prices , 18 for a burger I’d expect seriously nice however received a dry overcooked with little filling , staff lovely but left feeling ripped off as we were asked if everything was ok and we said no , ordered fries received under cooked chips with way too much salt which we did not ask for , burgers dry , received a bill of in excess of 90 pounds for three , we had a glass of wine 12,50 and bear one pint or Peronist 10.40 , fish pie was ok but not a lot of fish more mash and all three of us left half our meals , so as we were ignored completely about the standard of food we are no longer returning after 18 years

A group of us walked from Woodingdean (a lovely walk I'd highly recommend). We had a lovely seating area outside in the shade, much appreciated on a very hot day. There were lovely plants in the pub garden. We went inside to order drinks. It smelled strongly of something like cigar smoke and whilst a lovely old pub inside I was glad not to be eating inside. We ordered a range of meals including burgers, the Sussex Smokey and the 'onion bhajee curry'. The food was nice and interesting. The onion bhajee curry had a huge amount of daal that seemed strange. There were other twists on the menu that seemed like they would not suit everyone's taste/ would be strange and were maybe an attempt at gastro pub mains/unique changes but that actually the twists weren't ideal. When it was time to pay we calculated it between us with a tip and paid. We were then told there was still £7 to pay. Confused we checked again to make sure he had paid with a tip and were considering what to do but then a member of staff came over and said everything was ok after all. I wouldn't have mentioned this but have now seen other reviews have mentioned attempts to over charge.

Wanted the focaccia bread with oil dip to enjoy with a drink to start, was told it was "still in the oven and a half hour wait" -at 1.00 pm this surprised me, maybe cooking for evening meals only??? Ordered the Sussex Smokey. Loads of sauce and very sickly with thick cheese, didn't seem to be a lot of fish, tasted more cheese than fish. Lovely chips though. I wouldn't rush back to The Juggs. Don't worry if the weather isn't good enough to sit in the lovely garden; inside you'll find all the charm and character expected of a 15th Century English pub. Met with two friends for a casual lunch. The restaurant was empty at midday and we ordered a simple lunch of two focaccia sandwiches and one vegetarian Caesar salad. Our meal did not arrive for 45 mins, and while waiting the restaurant started to fill up and guests around us began receiving their food. When we chased up our order we were told the delay was due to the chicken in the focaccia sandwich being 'cooked from fresh'. When it finally arrived the delay was explained by another staff member as being because the bread had been 'in the oven'. The bread was cold and soft, with no evidence of just having come out of the oven. The chicken was barely luke warm and consisted of small strips of chicken that would have taken a few mins to fry. As for the Caesar salad, it was a massive bowl of lettuce tossed in dressing with a handful of croutons and a slice of parmesan. When asked during the meal if everything was ok we explained why it wasn't, to a very defensive server. Later, the manager/landlady stormed up to our table asking if everything was ok, having clearly been told by the servers that it wasn't. When we said 'no' and started to voice our complaints she immediately went on the offensive, became argumentative and then asked if we had booked (we never did find out the relevance of this question). When we tried to detail why we were dissatisified, she turned away and walked off! Never have we experienced such shocking customer service - no apology, no offer of a reduction to our bill or a complementary coffee or desert. Some time later, with our plates still not cleared from the table, a server asked if we wanted to order any more drinks, which we declined. He then said 'this table is booked for 2pm'. At this point, all the diners in this section of the restaurant had left and we were surrounded by five empty tables!!! To top it all, when we went to the bar to pay, the manager handed us our bill with not one word of regret that we'd had a less than enjoyable visit. Unbelievable. Don't go here!

Mind your head on the outside door frame if you're over 5' 8" - it was built around 6 centuries ago (14th century) when people were much shorter. Inside is full of ancient wood framing and an inglenook fireplace. Outside is an undulating red brick forecourt. I've been going there since arriving in Hove March 1981. Nothing has changed much apart from a restaurant extension a couple of decades ago. Dog friendly, with an interesting wine list and excellent food.

We'd heard good things about this place in the past. Though we should have looked at more recent reviews. The service was poor and food wasn't worth the cost. I suspect training of waiting staff is to blame (suggesting the customer care policy of the place has gone downhill). We we told to go and find our table, which was crammed between two others and blocking the disabled toilet. I had to ask someone to move so I could even get to my chair. We were told there would be table service but in the end after a long wait I had to ask a staff member who was tidying up if she would take our order. We weren't given cutlery. The table near us also had to ask for cutlery and were asked quite bluntly "do you need anything else". Their reply "some plates please" as the food had just come in a serving dish. I must admit I had to laugh. The staff just seemed to have no idea, so I think it is a training issue and the management perhaps don't care as much as they should? When our food arrived the roast beef (~£17) included a single very thin slice of beef, smaller than a rasher of bacon. The dessert was also small and seemed to be from a packet and definitely not worth over £7. I don't mind paying high prices for food if the environment and service is good. The food tasted good, but the entire experience felt very sub-standard and low value for money. Edit: returned here in Spring 2024. Sad to say no improvement in the service. Staff attitude was poor. I witnessed rudeness to another customer. Food was alright, but nothing special.

What a gem. Amazing food and service in a beautiful setting. Came under new management in Feb 2024 and what a great job they're doing. Added bonus for families is the playground behind (though not associated with the pub it's a great way for the kids to burn off energy after lunch!) 10/10

New management after a spate of muppets running the place. Lovely greeting, food and follow up service perfect, a sincere thank you when we left. :-)

Thought I booked a table for 4, but didn't! They still found us a table on a busy May Bank Holiday. Our 2nd visit in 3 weeks. Food beyond delish, staff amazing, and owner lovely...thank you :)

Lovely place with nice atmosphere. Polite and helpful staff. Did not eat this time, so I cannot judge their food, but what I saw looked lovely.

Visited for the first time today with two friends. We each live about 90 minutes away in different directions and this pub was a convenient middle ground. Service was wonderful and we had all of our needs catered for by the friendly waiting staff. Only downside was that it was so busy, we had to leave before we were ready to! What a popular place, and deservedly so.

We had a table for lunch midweek. The pub is under new management. The food and the service was excellent and the staff were friendly and helpful. The new team has definitely got off to a great start.

Great setting close to walks on the downs. Scaffolding up at the moment. Good menu.

Came for late lunch Saturday, two of us. Both had focaccia each, shared side of fries and dessert. All food was brilliant, wonderfully fresh and well cooked. Service was a bit hit and miss, had to go up to bar a few times, and blonde lady a bit unfriendly. Stunning beer garden, would definitely return.

Another enjoyable night. Food and staff were great again. Matt is a superb host and engages with his customers so well. Sadly, not the first time some of the menu isn't available due to low stock. Come on owners, start getting things right and supply these hard working managers with the stock they need.to serve what is on your menus, so they don't have to constantly apologise to customers. They are doing their best and a great job, they need better support. Will certainly be back again..

Wonderful Sunday lunch. Atypical of the usual over cooked watery offerings of most pubs. Generous well cooked portions and a decent wine list

Really nice and affordable hotel. Nice vibe and friendly staff. Near the centre and also near the start of some beautiful walks. Recomended!

Really grim. I went with 2 other female friends in their 30s. We were in the disco area and the landlord (late 60s, male) kicked me after I touched one of his blow up Christmas display penguins. We weren’t being drunk or rowdy. Other reviews have said that the landlord and landlady have threatened to kick other patrons for random things like talking too loudly. I reported the incident to the police who said what he had done was an assault and I could take him to court. I opted not to go to court instead agreed to receive a written apology from the landlord, but have yet to receive one. Don’t go here - there are WAY better pubs in Lewes. Try The Lewes Arms, The Swan, The King’s Head, The Rights of Man, The White Hart, The Gardener’s Arms, The Brewer’s Arms, The Pelham Arms, The Black Horse, The Royal Oak, The Lansdown Arms, The Snowdrop, The Abyss Microbrewery, John Harvey Tavern. They’re all lovely pubs where you’re much less likely to be assaulted by the landlord.

I stayed in a room here at the end of September . Dirty room, dingy room, manager not contactable , noisy and cold. Do not stay here
