This is a beautiful looking pub, and would probably be nice for an evening summer drink. We went for lunch. The food was sadly mediocre. Not as good as many ready meals, or regular home cooked meals. The curry was bland and homogeneous. The burger was overly salty and otherwise tasteless with completely cold sauces and oddly rubbery beef. The lasagne was again bland, mushy and over salted. Some scampi were tasty, but mushy rather than plump and juicy. Even the pieces of biscuit with the ice cream were soggy. The skin on fries were pretty decent though, I liked the cheese cake, although it again was very salty. The inside atmosphere was okay, although the decor feels more like an old blokes drinking pub than a place expecting anyone and everyone. It didn't feel emotionally or physically warm. There was a smell of stale beer when we went in and the music was loud. The staff were great – very attentive, genuinely friendly, and a complete contrast to the food and atmosphere. It's a terrific location for a pub, and a beautiful building on the outside, but I think it needs some invigoration and zest, and a lot of love in the kitchen. Definitely would not recommend, unfortunately.

Went to the juggs for a lovely Sunday roast this evening with my friend we also had scampi and chips and halloumi fries to share. The Sunday roast was flavourful, the beef was perfectly cooked, with mixed vegetables on the side to add of your choice, definitely the best Sunday roast I’ve had at a pub in a long time. The scampi and chips was a filling size and the freshly made tartar sauce was very flavourful. Lovely choices of wine to have with our dinner and lovely polite and joyful members of staff. Will definitely be returning to this pub and introducing to new people.

Lovely staff and a very happy greeting on arrival. Our choices of pate then peri peri chicken, burger adjusted for diet requirements and onion bhaji curry were delicious. I loved the curry, delicious, crunchy bhaji and flavoursome Dahl. Then we had apple and blackberry crumble with ice cream and custard. We rolled out the door. Thank you

Sadly as a regular I won’t be eating again as the food was not the standard of the prices , 18 for a burger I’d expect seriously nice however received a dry overcooked with little filling , staff lovely but left feeling ripped off as we were asked if everything was ok and we said no , ordered fries received under cooked chips with way too much salt which we did not ask for , burgers dry , received a bill of in excess of 90 pounds for three , we had a glass of wine 12,50 and bear one pint or Peronist 10.40 , fish pie was ok but not a lot of fish more mash and all three of us left half our meals , so as we were ignored completely about the standard of food we are no longer returning after 18 years

Came here with my parents for just a pit stop for a few soft drinks, ended up having a really nice lunch. Beer battered fish and chips, Bhaji foccacia and 3 drinks came to 30 quid, great value. Stopped for lunch here with a friend on a Wednesday lunchtime to find The Juggs was surprisingly busy. We were the first to sit outside in the sunshine but within a few minutes others followed our example. Going inside to the bar the atmosphere was friendly and buzzing. The food was good and despite the number of other customers service was also prompt and efficient. We would happily visit here again.

Walked out from Lewes for dinner on a sunny summer Friday evening. Arrived about 6.30pm and plenty of space outside. Good selection of beers / ales. The food was amazing. Varied menu of pub classics, mains, sides, etc, and a specials board. 3 of us ate. The Sussex Smokie was incredible, and a good sized portion as a main. The Steak Pie was fantastic. Crispy pasty, well filled, lovely gravy. Will definitely go back.

A group of us walked from Woodingdean (a lovely walk I'd highly recommend). We had a lovely seating area outside in the shade, much appreciated on a very hot day. There were lovely plants in the pub garden. We went inside to order drinks. It smelled strongly of something like cigar smoke and whilst a lovely old pub inside I was glad not to be eating inside. We ordered a range of meals including burgers, the Sussex Smokey and the 'onion bhajee curry'. The food was nice and interesting. The onion bhajee curry had a huge amount of daal that seemed strange. There were other twists on the menu that seemed like they would not suit everyone's taste/ would be strange and were maybe an attempt at gastro pub mains/unique changes but that actually the twists weren't ideal. When it was time to pay we calculated it between us with a tip and paid. We were then told there was still £7 to pay. Confused we checked again to make sure he had paid with a tip and were considering what to do but then a member of staff came over and said everything was ok after all. I wouldn't have mentioned this but have now seen other reviews have mentioned attempts to over charge.

First visit for a birthday lunch and sat inside. Found staff to be welcoming and service good, despite it being very busy. Wanted the focaccia bread with oil dip to enjoy with a drink to start, was told it was "still in the oven and a half hour wait" -at 1.00 pm this surprised me, maybe cooking for evening meals only??? Ordered the Sussex Smokey. Loads of sauce and very sickly with thick cheese, didn't seem to be a lot of fish, tasted more cheese than fish. Lovely chips though. I wouldn't rush back to The Juggs. Sorry 😐

The Juggs is in a lovely setting, nestled in the village of Kingston. Don't worry if the weather isn't good enough to sit in the lovely garden; inside you'll find all the charm and character expected of a 15th Century English pub. Met with two friends for a casual lunch. The restaurant was empty at midday and we ordered a simple lunch of two focaccia sandwiches and one vegetarian Caesar salad. Our meal did not arrive for 45 mins, and while waiting the restaurant started to fill up and guests around us began receiving their food. When we chased up our order we were told the delay was due to the chicken in the focaccia sandwich being 'cooked from fresh'. When it finally arrived the delay was explained by another staff member as being because the bread had been 'in the oven'. The bread was cold and soft, with no evidence of just having come out of the oven. The chicken was barely luke warm and consisted of small strips of chicken that would have taken a few mins to fry. As for the Caesar salad, it was a massive bowl of lettuce tossed in dressing with a handful of croutons and a slice of parmesan. When asked during the meal if everything was ok we explained why it wasn't, to a very defensive server. Later, the manager/landlady stormed up to our table asking if everything was ok, having clearly been told by the servers that it wasn't. When we said 'no' and started to voice our complaints she immediately went on the offensive, became argumentative and then asked if we had booked (we never did find out the relevance of this question). When we tried to detail why we were dissatisified, she turned away and walked off! Never have we experienced such shocking customer service - no apology, no offer of a reduction to our bill or a complementary coffee or desert. Some time later, with our plates still not cleared from the table, a server asked if we wanted to order any more drinks, which we declined. He then said 'this table is booked for 2pm'. At this point, all the diners in this section of the restaurant had left and we were surrounded by five empty tables!!! To top it all, when we went to the bar to pay, the manager handed us our bill with not one word of regret that we'd had a less than enjoyable visit. Unbelievable. Don't go here!

Over 25 years ago I used to bring our visiting University External Examiners to Juggs for lunch. Although the food was good, the pub/restaurant was cramped, and became overcrowded. We were taken here today by our youngest daughter and son in law, together with one of our grandchildren. The food was quite simply superb, the service prompt and friendly. Mind your head on the outside door frame if you're over 5' 8" - it was built around 6 centuries ago (14th century) when people were much shorter. Inside is full of ancient wood framing and an inglenook fireplace. Outside is an undulating red brick forecourt. I've been going there since arriving in Hove March 1981. Nothing has changed much apart from a restaurant extension a couple of decades ago. Dog friendly, with an interesting wine list and excellent food.

We'd heard good things about this place in the past. Though we should have looked at more recent reviews. The service was poor and food wasn't worth the cost. I suspect training of waiting staff is to blame (suggesting the customer care policy of the place has gone downhill). We we told to go and find our table, which was crammed between two others and blocking the disabled toilet. I had to ask someone to move so I could even get to my chair. We were told there would be table service but in the end after a long wait I had to ask a staff member who was tidying up if she would take our order. We weren't given cutlery. The table near us also had to ask for cutlery and were asked quite bluntly "do you need anything else". Their reply "some plates please" as the food had just come in a serving dish. I must admit I had to laugh. The staff just seemed to have no idea, so I think it is a training issue and the management perhaps don't care as much as they should? When our food arrived the roast beef (~£17) included a single very thin slice of beef, smaller than a rasher of bacon. The dessert was also small and seemed to be from a packet and definitely not worth over £7. I don't mind paying high prices for food if the environment and service is good. The food tasted good, but the entire experience felt very sub-standard and low value for money. Edit: returned here in Spring 2024. Sad to say no improvement in the service. Staff attitude was poor. I witnessed rudeness to another customer. Food was alright, but nothing special.

Thank god we were diverted.... Haven't been to the Juggs for more than a drink in recent years but as we were diverted that way home and we were starving after a busy day out we thought let's give it a try if we can get a table, we got the last and only walk in table. A great pint of Harvey's and a far more interesting menu than expected (turns out some changes regards freedom to choose what they offer) opted for Whole seabass but was given offer to fillet too, served with a delicious classic champagne or wine sauce, tenderstream Broccoli and a new potato crush, and a stonkingly good Steak and Guiness proper pie with a pan fried bubble n squeak cake and side of vegetables. All served by a jolly terrific team of enthusiastic people. We will be booking for Sunday lunch very soon, I think their reservations line has been red hot unsurprisingly considering both mains were £20 or less. The Juggs is in top form and we are delighted to live close enough and affordable enough to make it a regular visit. Faultless Update after Sunday lunch 24th March - The best Sunday lunch ever not one element of the 5 veg, Cauliflower cheese, Yorkshire, Gravy, Pigs in blankets or any of the the trio of meats we had lamb, Beef or Turkey were even bordering average it was once again wonderful with a jolly decent glass of Rose and a Harvey's and what has become well known their Banoffee pie (wrapped to take home)with it's own Sussex connections down the road - Hungry Monk. The whole team are so friendly, only suggestion add "Buy The Chef's" a beer option on the menu but tbh they all front and back of house deserve one and hopefully get one. My pictures don't do it justice so just take my word for it, but you definitely need to book, all the best places need some planning in your diary, the juggs is no exception. With the lighter evenings ahead we will have a midweek trip in April and make this at least a monthly treat.

Having visited The Juggs on numerous occasions over many years, this was the last time! We arrived at an empty pub that was staffed by two extremely unenthusiastic staff with no pleasant greetings or hospitality. We ordered our food and despite the pub being empty it took a long time to arrive, so naturally our expectations were being heighten by the wait. However, when it eventually arrived it was very disappointing, it was soulless and tasteless, the kids’ meals were ridiculously small and overall, not great meals. When we questioned the staff further the pub has changed hands from a Shephard Neame pub to a new landlord two weeks earlier. Hopefully, they will improve both their food and hospitality, but we will not be returning, which is a shame for a pub which has sooooo much potential. Lewes is full of much better pubs which are close to this one and I would definitely look at those before visiting The Juggs!

Great old pub! Call in occasionally on a Friday after work on the way home. Nice open fires this time of the year. Large car park, outdoor areas and food always looks good although I've never tried it myself.

Lovely pub. Very warm welcome and lovely service throughout. Both fish and chips and burger were excellent. Well cooked and very generous portions. My only quibble was that I ordered a lime and soda an was bought a pint. I hadn’t asked for a pint but that was fine. When we got the bill I’d been charged £2.30 for a lime and soda and an extra 95p for lime. When I queried this I was told that it was because they have to put extra lime in a pint. The waitress said several times that it wasn’t her fault as she didn’t set the prices. I obviously just paid it as it was such a small amount to make a fuss about but I left feeling like I’d be ripped off which is a shame when everything else had been so great.

Worst Sunday Roast I’ve had in Lewes. Not cheap and tiny. Embarrassingly small potion of meat not even backed up with a decent veg portion. Want a roast, give this place a miss. I needed to pick up some crisps and chocolate after it.

Improvement is coming. I regularly go to this pub and in the last year it hasn’t been that good. But this time it was excellent. The food was great, hot and tasty. The atmosphere was superb as ever and the service was friendly and quick. Would now definitely go here after a country walk

I love this restaurant and we booked a table in the bar area. Very cosy, lots of dogs (we dont have one) and that is fine. Very tasty Sunday lunches. One vegetarian (pretty small portions), one Roast Chicken. All good except the food was barely warm. We did tell the brilliant waiter who said he would tell the chef. They are normally so busy we didnt want to ask for a 'hot' meal (warm would have done). Next time we will.

Cannot recommend highly enough! A lovely pub with a lovely atmosphere. Beer was excellent and clearly well kept. Staff went above and beyond and made us ( including the dog ) feel really at home . Very busy day but no delay on food or drinks at all. Food was absolutely superb, faultless. I visited 3 times this weekend and each visit was fabulous. Thank you to all involved.

Another enjoyable night. Food and staff were great again. Matt is a superb host and engages with his customers so well. Sadly, not the first time some of the menu isn't available due to low stock. Come on owners, start getting things right and supply these hard working managers with the stock they need.to serve what is on your menus, so they don't have to constantly apologise to customers. They are doing their best and a great job, they need better support. Will certainly be back again..

We have just come back from having lunch at the Jolly Sportsman, and what a lunch it was! Every dish was absolutely delicious, the beer and wine excellent and the service friendly and very efficient. Top notch - we will definitely be back!

I stayed in a room here at the end of September . Dirty room, dingy room, manager not contactable , noisy and cold. Do not stay here
