We need to check out late because my wife needed to get ready for a wedding. It was no trouble for the hotel. They allowed us enough time. Day before they tried to help us get accommodation for the following night as they were fully booked. Rooms were spacious and beds comfortable.

Walking the dogs near the Dorset this afternoon, we were attracted by the sound of live music and laughter coming from outside the pub. There was obviously a happy crowd in the garden and, as we didn't know the pub, we wandered nearer for a closer look...and were amazed to come upon the best Elvis tribute ever!! Completely unexpected. We had the best time and the inside of the pub looked wonderful, when I went to the bar. The Dorset is evidently a real community pub, and Mark Wright Elvis really knew how to get people dancing in the sun, and singing along. We'll be going back soon to try the food.

I’ve been here several times with family for an unscheduled meal, there’s always a table and the staff are always friendly. On this occasion I ordered a fish finger sandwich and my husband and daughter ordered a more substantial meal, their meal was perfect but my fish finger sandwich was awful, I’d actually argue that I wasn’t served fish fingers, there was no fish in whatever I was served, it was fried mashed potato in the shape of a fish finger, so eating a mashed potato sandwich was pretty disgusting, please reconsider who you buy your fish fingers from, I would have been happy with Birds Eye fish fingers but the ones served to me were awful.

We were heading to Eastbourne, caught in traffic, so tried to find somewhere to stop for lunch. After passing about 7 pubs with absolutely no parking we came across this place, thanks Google 😁. As we walked through the door, on a dreary wet Thursday, the lovely lady behind the bar was really welcoming. I asked her name, it was Danielle. She was very friendly and made us feel at home. We ordered drinks, then sat in the dining room to eat. Despite the sign saying we had to order at the bar, it wasn’t busy, Danielle kindly took our order from our table. Great customer service! I requested Cajun chicken and chips with coleslaw (but no salad, as I knew I wouldn’t be able to eat it, and hate waste), hubby had eggs ham and chips. Danielle asked if we would like water too, nice touch. Our food was served in good time. The ham was delicious, nicely salted and lean, decent amount as well. Chunky chips were good and the eggs were ok (chef, please just spoon a little oil onto the yolk so it’s not snotty). My Cajun chicken was delicious, perfect flavour, very nice coleslaw too. I loved my fries, i think they were even better than the chunk chips (never thought I would say that lol). Danielle gave us a check back with perfect timing. FYI, if you’re concerned about the spurious looking salt on the table, don’t worry, the chef puts rice in it to ensure it doesn’t block up. Only things I would suggest, clean menus, they’re mucky. Get slightly bigger plates, and get rid of unnecessary chips pots, awful gimmick. Perhaps I should mention, I am a professional secret shopper, but not for this place, so I have plenty of experience of pubs/restaurants. Please, please, please change your cheap and painful cutlery! Using your forks and knives is like holding the sharp end of a knife against the palm of your hand. All in all we were really glad we found this place, and I saved the location to my satnav so we can stop here for lunch next time we’re heading for Eastbourne. We will bring our own cutlery though! Good food quality, excellent service, reasonable prices, ideal lunch. Thank you Danielle and chef, lovely start to our little holiday. See you again next time we’re heading to Eastbourne 😁.

Boldly signed dual-entranced pub on the eastern edge of the town centre. Rather starkly refurbished which only emphasises the ornate splendour of the bar. A comprehensive menu of pub grub and comfort food, with a particularly good range of burgers. We were looking for something a little lighter and it wasn't difficult to pick out a few rather indulgent options. The bacon, brie and cranberry sandwich was more like a well-filled small loaf, with no stinting on the components; great value. Equally so, halloumi fries and BBQ sauce with a side order of regular fries. Nicely presented for what it was, perfectly cooked and generous. As a tied Harvey's house, there are no problems with beer here and the landlord and his sidekick were friendly and helpful. A tad on the chilly side when we called in but other than that, a perfectly honest and reliable pub, I'd say.

We often take my elderly aunt here for Sunday lunch and we have had consistently excellent roast lunch. Today was no exception and after emailing the Dorset yesterday we had a prompt reply to our table request (as always). We were greeted by the friendly staff who remembered us and showed us to our table. She was very helpful and polite. Our roast chicken meals came quickly and it was absolutely delicious - tender chicken and many various vegetables and Yorkshire pudding. (£13.95) I would highly recommend this pub for Sunday lunch and of course for a good pint of Harveys for the husband!

A very disappointing meal here. I had family over from Dubai, also joined by friends. My sister had one mouthful of her vegan curry and left it, my mother actually asked for something else as her vegetarian sausages tasted really cheap and rubbery, the fish and chips was OK but to much oil was tasted in the batter, would not visit again.

We booked Sunday lunch here, expecting a roast dinner of the sort we used to be able to get on a very regular basis before lockdowns. Unfortunately, when we arrived we were told that they had stopped doing roasts two weeks ago, although they would be starting them again in October. The current Sunday menu consisted of predominately burgers, or chips, or of course both - not really what I wanted for Sunday lunch. So I opted for a starter and a sweet. The starter I chose was cod goujons with tartare sauce. The tartare sauce, although it came in a wee dish, was anonymous and tasteless, but the batter on the goujons was excellent - light, thin and crisp. I then ordered the double chocolate cake with icecream and strawberries. When it arrived it was an extraordinary size - easily twice what I was expecting. It was a four-layer chocolate cake, slightly warmed and with half-melted chocolate icing acting more as a sauce. Because the menu listed it as "VE", I assume the icecream was vegan, although there was nothing about its taste to indicate that. It came with raspberries instead of strawberries, but I was perfectly happy with that. Meanwhile, my husband had fish and chips, which was a hefty helping of which he managed to eat about two-thirds. We will of course be back in October, because we still have wistful memories of their excellent Sunday roasts of yesteryear.

My boyfriend and I needed somewhere to stay for one night whilst on our way to visit family. I picked The Dorset mainly due to having accessible parking close by and being reasonably priced. We arrived on a Saturday afternoon and we were pleasantly surprised at how cheap the car park was (only needed to pay until 5pm and it was free until Monday morning - bargain!) The staff on arrival were very helpful and showed us to our room and how to gain access via the back door. The room itself was clean and comfortable and the bathroom was very well appointed with lots of towels and toiletries. The bed was a little on the firm side, but we still got a good nights sleep. Our room was over the loos in the bar, and the hand-dryer was rather noisy so we had to turn the TV up (but this problem solves itself once the bar closes for the night!) The highlight of our stay was the meal we had in the bar - fantastic! I had the Southern Fried Chicken Burger and my fella had the Cajun Chicken with fries. We eat out a lot, and this was the tastiest meal we have had in ages (the fries had a creole style dusting on them which gave them a lovely zing). We opted for the bread and butter pudding for afters which came with chocolate filling and blueberries on top (plus a little jug of custard each). Everything was lovely and hot and the portion sizes good. Even if you aren't looking to stay, definitely book a table for dinner and come and eat!

At breakfast we were informed that they had run out of beans - quite amazing since Tesco is just a stones throw away! On the second morning they couldn’t cook eggs due to an issue with their gas hob!1Quite amazingly on the third morning their chef had phoned in sick so no breakfasts at all apart from continental!!!That’s when we decided to go to Bills in town where we had an amazing breakfast. Also there is no parking at the Dorset. One has to use the adjacent council car park which is free before 9am and after 5pm. In view of these issues we won’t be staying here again.

I wrote a review for here before but Trip Advisor replied stating that reviews had been stopped - glad to see I can now write it again as I want to warn people not to come here.It was a nice weather day and it was my birthday - Boxing Day, 26th December. My family suggested going out and we thought we'd try Lewes for a nice day out.We have been to this pub previously with friends both for just drinks and to eat and were hoping they'd have the same lager as we'd tried before that we really liked.Upon arriving we found this notice stuck to the door - see photo, it read"Due to the hunt today, we regret to inform you that we will not be welcomingSABOTEURS or VEGANSinto the premises.Kind Regards,The Management"We were all really shocked to find this. I didn't realise until now, that this is a pub for the hunting fraternity, something I am 100% against. This notice, which I question it's legality, is discriminatory and unwelcoming and my mind was immediately changed to definitely not wanting to go here, not that day or ever again. How any business can think it's acceptable to do this is unbelievable.I have usually found Lewes to be a very welcoming place but this has really put me off as this is a Harvey's brewery pub which is based in Lewes.Shame on this pub.

We called in yesterday hoping to have a pub lunch - my husband ordered the breakfast and I ordered the ploughman’s lunch- was disappointed that there was only fruit flavoured cider available and was shocked at the price just over 27£ for the 2 meals and a pint and a half of lager. We waited about 25 minutes and there was no sign of our food- on enquiring as to what the progress was on our order we were told that there was a bit of a wait on and it would be about another ten minutes. ( as far as I could see there was only one other couple there who were also waiting for their food). After ten minutes there was still no sign of the food- I chased it up again and made it clear that we felt we had waited long enough. The food suddenly appeared- as far as the ploughman’s lunch , given that it cost the best part of 11£ it didn’t live up to expectations- large lumps of cheese , basic greenery and a boiled egg that looked most unappetising -my husband had to take his food back to the bar staff as the sausages were still pink and undercooked . To be fair they gave us a refund - but really they had no option ! The table we sat at felt sticky and in need of a clean- totally underwhelmed by the visit and would not recommend .

The pub here is slightly darker than one would expect inside, but not in an overly unpleasant way. The oddest part of the experience, however, was the slight confusion in the barmaid when I asked to sample some of the ales before making my mind up on one. She did not seem to have much knowledge about the drinks she was serving, and was also uncertain on their prices as well.Once I made up my mind, however, I went to take a seat in the spacious seating area. The ale selection was not overly large, unfortunately, but they had some nice enough ones on offer. It was a nice enough place to wait whilst my partner's mother shopped in the adjacent Tesco before picking us up, but there are better pubs in town - and closer ones to the town centre than this one which may prove too much of a walk for some potential patrons.

I loved the goat's cheese and sun-dried tomato sandwich served with an ample side salad/garnish. I would have preferred a healthier choice but I;m not complaining. My partner chose and enjoyed the pulled pork sandwich on toasted bread. The pub was pretty dead but it was only 12pm. The food was excellent and the staff coped admirably with the numbers which can't have been easy. This all contributed to everyone having a great evening.

We spent the morning in Lewes and were looking for an early lunch. From the front we weren't sure it was open, but on opening the door it was clear it was, just a little dark in the front bar. We ordered lunch from a reasonably varied menu whilst being entertained by a local cat.Staff were friendly and service was good. Nice Harvey's beer too.I enjoyed my sandwich, my wife less so, although we had the same item, so it's a question of personal taste. My daughter enjoyed her Panino. Not the prettiest of gardens or greatest views, but it was clean and tidy. Not somewhere I'd make a point of revisiting, but certainly a decent spot.

Having recently relocated in June, have eaten out at various pubs and Resturants, the Dorset Arms to date is the most disapointing excuse for a English Pub. I write this with friends sitting in rear garden, thinking never again. I to have mentioned to staff about quality of my fish and chips, hollow foul batter around dry tasteless fish. Served on 12 assorted size chips, my girlfriend ordered cheesy chips, 11 chips, with a sprinkling of tasteless cheese not worth £3.00. My father has chicken, more the size of a pigeon, mum not impressed with pie either rather dry edges. Both my girlfriend and I ordered brownies, foul crunchy old cake, with cheap icecream. I cannot help agree with previous reviews, having read the managers replies this pub obviously does not respect customer feed back, thought previous managers comments rude, aggressive. I only wish had read beforehand. All four of us are of to Costa Coffee, coffee here at the Dorset like dish water. Lastly if the owners believe this pub serves good food, what are they use to them selves. Never experienced such tasteless horrible over cooked dried up poor excuse for food at any university canteen. Better food at Mcdonalds, and I'm trained for 7 years as a chef, before banking, do your stomach a favour and wallet STAY CLEAR OF THE DORSET AT LEWIS.

My wife and I called in Sunday 2rd August for lunch, Ordered 2 haddock /prawn meals, 20 minutes later fish and chips arrived. The fish, well what fish!, the batter was burnt, greasy, fish dry, complete with 11 chips!, I was asked by the waitress how was the meal, I explained apart from the incorrect meals arriving, the fish was the worst I had been served this year!, 10 mins later when the waitress walked passed, I asked what was the chiefs remark, the waitress replied he said he was sorry!, then the waitress replied im hungry if you don't want I will eat it!We then ordered a chocolate browny plus cheese board! On arrival the chocolate browny looked like dried up left overs of dry x mas pudding, the cheese board no better, my wife then asked for a butter, 7 mins later was presented with 2 warm soft butters in foil!, again I remarked about the sweets. No offer of any change, or alternatives, complete waste of money, as we sat outside, you pay beforehand.I would never recommend this place, the food was rubbish, I really don't think the waitress even mentioned to the chief.Noticed around tables floor dirty, timber tables with old food in the cracks!, toilets no better.Would advice anybody to find alternative place to eat, unless you eat anything!!

After many visits to Lewes and paying our respects to Harvey's, we finally got a little off the main shopping streets and discovered The Dorset. The front exterior wasn't all that inviting but upon entering was pleased to see that it was the type of pub we could do some session drinking in (traditional décor). Good range of well kept cask ales and the bar staff was happy to provide samples. We decided to stay for lunch and found a good variety of options to choose from. Fish pie was excellent and the service prompt.Really enjoyed the large beer garden and stopped back later in the day for another round. Good food, good ales and good pub ambiance...my kind of place!

Having enjoyed our stay at The Dorset earlier this year, we decided to call in for lunch recently. This pub has a welcoming atmosphere and friendly staff. The food we had was tasty and well presented. I chose from the lite bites and sharing menu but there is also a good choice of sandwiches and salads as well as a variety of main courses. It was a lovely day so we took advantage of the large sunny outside area as were many other customers.

We had lunch there on a Monday and so, not surprisingly, it was pretty empty. The chap who served us at the bar was sullen, but he took our order for food and we sat down in the restaurant with our drinks and waited. After half an hour I got up to ask if our food was coming. He disappeared into the kitchen to ask, and came back with the message that it was just being dished up, but there was no apology for the wait. He brought the plates to our table about 5 minutes later. My husband had the steak and ale pie which was served with a generous amount of different fresh vegetables and mashed potatoes. I had ordered the shoulder of lamb but the plate that was put in front of me, in comparison, seemed virtually empty. There was some very nice but small slices of lamb, (with a lot of fat which I had to cut off,) a small pile of what looked like pulled lamb, two small carrots, two half bits of parsnip, two marble-sized potato croquettes, (at least thats what I think they were!) and some watery spinach. I asked the server if that was everything, and he just muttered 'yes' and left. Not what I would expect for £12.95, particularly as my husbands steak and ale pie was less at £11.95. I also had go to the bar to ask for some mint sauce which any well-trained server would have known should be offered with lamb.To be honest I was very disappointed with the sheer lack of quantity of food, compared to my husbands plate. In the end my husband shared half his mashed potatoes and some green beans and broccoli with me from his plate.Sadly our eating experience was disappointing to say the least, and though the interior is pleasant enough to sit in, the service and food left a lot to be desired.

We stayed at the Dorset Inn when we visited Glymbourne and it was great. We were able to get into our rooms early to get dressed and a taxi to and from was very easy. Getting in late with the card entry was simple and the room was everything we needed. Breakfast was great and served promptly with a huge smile. Our stay was simple, pleasant and very relaxing in a lovely town.

Visited with friends and ordered the special beef and horseradish pie - unfortunately it was not available but we were offered a chicken and ham pie which we accepted. After waiting longer than expected it arrived - the pastry was hard and, although the filling was ok (chicken and ham in a cream sauce), there was beef gravy on the plate! very strange to say the least... There was a very large whole carrot also which was very mushy - all in all not a good meal. This was mentioned to the waitress and she said she would tell the cook but nothing further so we left after paying the full price but will not visit again.

Good bar menu and worth the walk to the end of town. Dont be put off by the seedy looking front of the pub; instead go around the back. Better value than the trendy places that you pass on the way.

Popped in for what we thought would be a nice Sunday lunch, opted for the sausages and mash, 3 sausages on top of a scoop of mash in gravy £8.95 , no side dishes, that was it. Chef obviously thinks he is Mr Ramsey. I have news for him, he isn't. What a waste of money.

My partner and I stayed here for a local wedding. We had been recommended by the wedding party so booked. The hotel is a pub really but a very nice one. Very oldy worldy furnished and a very warm welcome. In general the food and bar area was very nice. The rooms were lovely. The bathroom was dated and had odd quirks and needed refurb. Wasn't great to be fair. The bed was very comfortable and the rooms immaculate to be honest. You did have to walk past all manner of junk on way to rooms which really did take a lot away from the feel of the hotel. The staff was friendly and welcoming and really involved herself in our experience.Breakfast was lovely. Good quality ingredients used was evident and we were very very satisfied with breakfast. Your breakfast experience was variable on who served. The lovely girl the first day couldn't do enough. The young blonde lad the following day didn't quite match up.... We had to ask for toast... tea and coffee and juice. .. This was all on hand the day before. The price paid didn't really reflect the level of service on the Sunday morning. However.... that being said. The hotel was lovely.. overall the service was good and would we return????? In a heartbeat.

we stopped here for lunch and weren't disappointed. we both had beef slowly cooked in ale, with mashed potato, celery, carrot, onion and delicious gravy. The meat was so tender and the veg very nice apart from the celery which was undercooked. My husband said the Harveys 'Old' ale was excellent and I had a Merlot--also good. Service was good too.

My colleagues booked a Xmas lunch at this restaurant today, menu choices booked in advance, I chose the vegetarian option which was some sort of 'wild mushroom' etc. etc. pie. Well, the soup starter was OK, then the main arrived which consisted of a nondescript and practically tasteless pie (I did manage to identify some enokitake mushrooms in it - these are cultivated mushrooms so you shouldn't really be calling it 'wild' mushrooms should you?) accompanied by a slab of leathery polenta which looked and tasted like yesterday's lunch warmed up (though not very much), plus three dollops of unidentifiable mash (I think one of them was swede, one was mashed peas, the third I couldn't decipher, if it was meant to be guacamole it didn't taste like it). Not even so much as a slice of tomato, cucumber or a lettuce leaf to liven the thing up.At least those in our group who selected the meat options got some vegetables on their plate. As I gazed upon this lunch, I got the clear message, THOSE WHO WISH TO ORDER A VEGETARIAN MEAL ARE NOT WELCOME AT THIS PLACE.By the time the dessert arrived (some sort of chocolate cake) I wasn't expecting much. It was OK but over-sweet and just the sort of thing you can buy from any supermarket.Altogether an appalling meal and certainly nowhere near worth the £27.50 I shelled out on it.I didn't feel like taking it out on your staff, but really you could have served me better.

The traditional Sunday lunch can be an occasion. Ours for nine began with promise as a 21st was being celebrated and with an unexpectedly warm and sunny day pre-dinner drinks in the spacious outdoor space was perfect. The sharing platters when we took our places inside hit the spot and raised our expectations. However disappointment followed when the dinners arrived with what seemed to be thin pre-sliced meat reheated in a microwave with similarly reheated roast potatoes and veg and yorkshires swimming in a generic gravy. The promise of crackling with pork had to be requested and arrived 20 minutes later. A side of chips requested twice never appeared and was removed from the bill.

Had lunch at this pub on Saturday 6th September. All the eating places in the High Street were packed so we were really pleased to walk around the corner to find this welcoming, quiet pub. It had a large selection of ales and a good choice of food. We went for the Sussex platter to share (£14) and it was gorgeous! Lovely Scotch egg, pork pie, duck liver pate, brisket pate topped with pesto, toast, apple and walnut salad and the most crispy and light pork scratchings - almost too much for the both of us but we put in a good effort. Staff were very friendly and they seem to host lots of music events. Give it a go!

Went August 2014 for an early Saturday lunch in the sun. Ordered the Triple Decker Club Sandwich with small fries to share, cost £8.30. Very impressed with both the food and the service, which was helpful and with a smile. Saw many other meals being served which all looked good, so will definitely be back soon to try the starter & main courses.

Really grim. I went with 2 other female friends in their 30s. We were in the disco area and the landlord (late 60s, male) kicked me after I touched one of his blow up Christmas display penguins. We weren’t being drunk or rowdy. Other reviews have said that the landlord and landlady have threatened to kick other patrons for random things like talking too loudly. I reported the incident to the police who said what he had done was an assault and I could take him to court. I opted not to go to court instead agreed to receive a written apology from the landlord, but have yet to receive one. Don’t go here - there are WAY better pubs in Lewes. Try The Lewes Arms, The Swan, The King’s Head, The Rights of Man, The White Hart, The Gardener’s Arms, The Brewer’s Arms, The Pelham Arms, The Black Horse, The Royal Oak, The Lansdown Arms, The Snowdrop, The Abyss Microbrewery, John Harvey Tavern. They’re all lovely pubs where you’re much less likely to be assaulted by the landlord.

Pelham House is a true gem in the heart of Lewes, blending historic charm with contemporary elegance to create a wedding venue like no other. As a wedding photographer, I’ve had the pleasure of capturing unforgettable moments at this Grade II listed townhouse, and it never fails to leave a lasting impression.
