This was a step back in time visit for us (my daughter & grandson). I used to bring my daughter and her brother when they were children. We was pleased to see that the charm we loved was still there. Food was fabulous and staff made us feel very welcome.

Rude old lady, my chips were cold and clearly reheated, eggs were inedible, also another family member had the fish, it was sent with 6 month old out of date tartare sauce which is dangerous as it contains EGG. when I politely told them I was not happy with the 7.80 meal bearing in mind there was 4 of us and spent £45 the old rude lady told me I was a liar. She said after 5 mins of arguing with her, she told me she would begrudgingly give me a 5 £ refund . Absolutely avoid this place unless u r just having a tea and crisps, as the food portions and quality for the price is absolutely daylight robbery especially in this day & age, now I know why the so called restaurant was so empty and depressing. Save your money guys and go to a restaurant that actually appreciates your custom.

Unbelievably rude little old lady seems to be running this place. They have a fenced off area with picnic seat / benches. It was about 1030 a.m. She's obviously done the Basil Fawlty course in customer service. My simple , polite question asking when they opened was met with a frosty and abrupt 'When I'm ready'. Undaunted , we pressed on and sat on a bench / table just around the corner from the fenced off area waiting for the premises to open. The window went up and we were informed this is an ice-cream kiosk , 'What do we want' ? You've guessed it , same person !!. (the place was empty) Too early for ice-cream so just waiting. She informed us in her inimitable style that unless we moved then security would be round soon and move us on !!. We didn't hurry and decided quickly that this establishment was not for us. We exited the Pier and made for Wetherspoons which was heaving with customers. Standard pub food at great prices and friendly , quick and professional service. Would not recommend the 'Jolly ? Roger'.

Have been here twice, once before I found the bad reviews. So decided to return to see and pleased to say that both times the food has been well presented, edible and large portions. The place itself is clean and staff were friendly. Good value for money. It doesn't try to be 'haute cuisine' It still appears to give value for money, clean environment and can only imagine that the bad reviews were when staff maybe were different. Hopefully this will continue. Well done to all concerned. Keep it up.

Took a small group from a charity for adults with learning disabilities to the pier and some wanted lunch at the end of the pier. Rather than take up several tables they sat together on three tables and asked if they could pay separately for their orders. The lady taking the food order found made it very clear this was too much trouble for her and was abrupt. On leaving it appeared one of the group had left a large amount of prize tickets from the amusement arcade on the table. When she enquired whether the staff had picked them up the same lady was very abrupt again and denied all knowledge. This is an unusual experience for us because most establishments we visit are very sympathetic and welcoming even when they’re busy. It wasn’t a particularly busy lunchtime and there appeared to be enough staff although they weren’t allowed to take the food orders. A bit more organisation and empathy wouldn’t go amiss!

Had the misfortune of eating here today. Both myself and hubby had the “luxury lasagne” I had mine with salad hubby had his with chips. Let’s just say that the chips and salad were the tastiest part of the meal. The iceberg lettuce was lass bland than the lasagne. I would not feed it to the seagulls it was that awful. The whole place seemed clean, the girl behind the till obviously had no desire to work there and appeared quite sullen, I put it down to her eating here!Would rather go somewhere else and spend £20 on something edible.I should have taken a photo of it but to be honest just wanted to leave ASAP Won’t return ever!

On a day trip to the fantastic beach on a scorching hot day, we headed to the pier, which had a lot to enjoy on it. We found the Jolly Roger at the end, which was roomy inside and had a great outdoor space. On a day when most places had fair queues, this offered a quiet respite from the crowds. Location is great. In these covid times, there was hand sanitiser and social distancing markers out. We were served promptly and the food came quickly. We had 2 seafood platters. Had considered sharing 1, but they weren't that big. Goujon nice, prawns nice, scampi so-so (not de-veined, a bug bear of mine) and calamari rings also so-so. All served with a decent side salad and homemade coleslaw. Drinks were cold and refreshing. Toilets situated 50yds round the corner. Overall it was a welcome pitstop on the day.

There was a board at the beginning of the pier advertising this restaurant, so thought as a nice day would have a late breakfast out on the pier. We all went in and I asked the man if my granddaughter could have scrambled eggs, his reply was `No` I then asked if she could have poached eggs to which he replied `No` I then said can she have fried eggs on toast, to which he replied `No we don't do toast 'I said what no toast with any breakfast, to which he again replied `no`... No explanation, or apology, I really could not believe what I was hearing, the guy had no personality or customer service skills at all. We had to laugh its named the Jolly Roger, should be called Moody Roger. Definitely wont be going back unless they could stretch to a loaf of bread or a chef who could cook learn how to cook toast..

Visited with my sister and our children , a party of 7 altogether. It was busy so we sat at a table meant for 4 with a high hair and 2 spare chairs. We each had a meal , the prices were expensive, drinks extortionate and the food mediocre at best . We spent in the region of £70, which was a lot , as some of the children opted for jacket potatoes or chips or a light bite. The food came out , all ok , nothing spectacular. We ate our meal - bare in mind we had 5 children and 2 adults squeezed around a small table meant for 4. When we had finished we got up to leave and the older lady, who I presume was the owner / manager came over with a younger member of staff and started clearing our table . The older lady made a comment made the comment ‘I knew it would be messy but not this messy’ . My 4 year old had had peas and dropped some on the floor as 4 year olds do and there were our plates and drinks bottles with some used napkins on the table ?!!! My sister replied ‘well that’s kids for you ‘ and the older lady said ‘ well I have kids ‘......what a bloody cheek !!! We wasn’t overly messy ! We had squeezed around a table so not to be an inconvenience, had a pretty expensive meal only to be moaned at spoken to like that . I found it very offensive and down right rude .Will not be eating there again and as regular visitors to clacton that’s a lot of money they’ve lost over the year . Politeness to paying customers wouldn’t go a miss . If you don’t like mess I suggest you don’t serve food to children! Very disappointing

This cafe at the end of the pier is a good place to escape the noise of arcades and rides. The menu looked promising, but the food didn’t live up to expectations - was all a bit 1970s.Had the special broccoli cheese bake ‘with potato slices”. It was edible, but more about potato slices than anything else. Hardly any broccoli and a watery sauce. Add to that the tea had full cream milk which finished it for me (not the cafe’s fault.) The sausage and chips didn’t look real or appetising, but my husband enjoyed them. The jacket potatoes were good. Lots of coleslaw on everything!Wouldn’t be hard to improve this place a lot. Brighten up the menu a bit and if you are going to have modern dishes, make sure they are cooled in a modern fashion. Also this is not cheap.

Me he comido aquí antes, y volveré a comer aquí de nuevo. Simplemente recuerda que un café, un restaurante y siéntese y disfrute de la ubicación.

The Jolly Roger Restaurant on Clacton Pier is a bit of a hidden gem. From a distance you can just see Restaurant written on side wall and see a patio of wooden tables. We visted on September 30th, so late in season. It is a very clean place, nicely decorated, with a varied, easy to view menu menu, including lite bite options. It isn't all about chips! You can have sandwiches, hot meals, all day breakfast etc There are many options of beverages. There is also an ice cream kiosk to the side for outside trade. It is a wonderful view from inside. We saw it on a lovely sunny Autumnal day. The food was tasty and served perfectly. The staff in there were a pleasure. We had a nice chat, very friendly and will definitely go again at some point. So if you want good, wholesome food, reasonably priced with a lovely view and a place to be made to feel welcome, well this is the place to go. I expect it is very busy high season. Would be good to experience it then too! As Londoners it was nice to get away and visit places like this! If anyone is visiting with babies/toddlers every few tables had highchairs and clip on table seats plus a pram park!

I don't want to over complicate this so here goes....My family went out for a coffee and bite to eat while waiting for the bank Holiday Fireworks. With one 3year old and one 10month old we wanted to keep it simple. With my 10month old was asleep in his buggy, we went in and sat down. After 10mins we were served by a women who seems to have forgotten how to smile. Rude and grumpy. Just as we're about to pay my wife told me the "gentleman" walking around had told us we need to wake the 10month old up and remove the pram as they don't allow it in the restaurant as it upsets other dinners. Apart from my group of 7x there were 4x other dinners (all of who were drinking but not eating, probably says something about the lack of quality in the food, frozen fish in a pier restaurant). When my mother in law questioned why we could come in the week before and it was fine his response was "that wouldn't of happened, I wouldn't of allowed it". My mother in law asked if he was calling her a lier to which he responded "yes, I wouldn't have allowed it".His behaviour was rude, arrogant, stroppy and completely unprofessional. We were completely offended. It was only then that he informed us he is the owner and if we didn't like it then go! Obviously this man has NO customer service skills or front of house management. The sign in the window advertising for staff is a giveaway of the type of person you are dealing with! If he treats a paying customer in this way I dread to think how he treats the staff? It's hard to believe that my sleeping 10month old will offend the other 4x customers on the busiest Bank Holiday of the year. I have been in the food industry for 11 years and have dealt with some arrogance, rudeness, lack of management skills and disgusting behaviour before but never at this level. I have NEVER written a review before but couldn't help doing it this time. I have reviewed this as a 1 as there is no lower score. I will make sure everyone local and all my contacts in the food industry are aware of this mans naivety, unprofessionalism and general rudeness and hopefully we can remove such a stain on our lovely local area. Your customers (especially local) are your bread and butter and pay your bills. Without us you have NOTHING! You never know who is going to be sitting down for a drink or meal next....... They may even have a buggy!I don't expect a response from such an arrogant person but would like everyone else to take note and not waste there money or time. COMPLETE DISGUST!

Fish and Chips at the Seaside, what could be more more classic and british ?, unfortunately this is not the place to fulfil that criteria. We were served a uniform block of frozen white fish covered in some sort of bright orange coating, both the chips and the peas were cold and sitting on a teaspoon of shredded lettuce and a slice of tomato. We left the whole thing and walked out, the staff couldn't care less and why should they?. That's the thing about establishments like this with very little return custom, they just don't have to try, there will always be more mugs like us coming along.

A nice bright and clean self service restaurant at the end of the pier with menu boards clearly displayed with good food choices available. The only downside is that there is fixed seating and tables, not easy to use if disabled or of larger build, however there was one table which could sit about 6 customers that appears to be available for reservations and has free moving chairs that are more comfortable than the plastic ones. There is also Indoor pram parking. For warmer days there is outdoor seating and also available FREE deck chair hire for use on the Pier. Staff were pleasant even though they looked bored when there were no customers to serve. The snacks and drinks we purchased were good and reasonably priced. The views from here at the very end of the pier were very good.

Having arrived at Clacton Pier early on Sunday to get a parking space (husband on crutches) near to the pier entrance by the time we reached the end of the Pier (very slow going with himself being "crocked") we were ready for a late breakfast. We were their first customers of the day so the restaurant was empty and it was noticeable how clean it looked. No small feat for a restaurant/café of this size. Full English breakfast for two with one tea and one coffee came to £14 odd and was very good value. Posh nosh it isn't but it was hot. well cooked and not greasy. Thoroughly enjoyable with friendly, cheerful staff (although we do admit that as we were the only ones in there at first we wouldn't really have expected much else). A leisurely breakfast, with a lovely view of the sea shimmering in the sun was just what the doctor ordered.

Staying in Clacton, we spent a day on the pier. Looking for a place we could sit down and eat, we came across the Jolly Roger at the end of the pier. Beautiful views!Staff were friendly, good choice on the menu, specials, childrens, prices were reasonable, (we are from the North, so if I'm honest we expected more expensive and allowed for this eating out), however, this was not the case, £26 for 4 meals and drinks is about average I would say.Food was served in a timely manner, piping hot and good, no complaints whatsover!I would both return to and recommend this little beauty spot to anyone!

Have been here many times over the years, my most recent visit showed me that it has been redecorated and freshened up to make it far more modern and cleaner looking. We only had drinks which where just fine. Saw some other food that other people had ordered and both commented on how tasty looking it looked. Great pictures of Claton on Sea back in the day on the wall, found this very intersting!

This café is clean and its location is its main selling point. However you can get cheaper food and drink elsewhere in Clacton and even on the Pier!

I was shocked at the prices in here. On average each item on their blackboard is at least 50p dearer than other places. £1.70 for a teabag in a small pot of hot water and £1.70 for a small commercially produced cake is a rip off! Won't go here again. They think because of their location they can charge over the odds and its taking advantage of visitors and locals alike. Also no prices on the items in display cabinets. I have since checked and suggest you try elsewhere and you will find tea for one is £1.20 or less! The cake is available elsewhere at 90p. - £1.10.

We visited the Jolly Roger on the 28th August 2012. The restaurant is quite large - I'm sure it seats well over 100 inside and there is an outside seating area too. Both inside and outside tables looked clean. The menu is quite extensive for this type of restaurant and has all the seaside favourites plus some other dishes too, prices seemed fairly competitive. Although we only wanted a drink it was most pleasant sitting outside the cafe in the sun since this venue has a nice view as it is at the end of the pier

this cafe on the end of the pier serves good basic food but is more expensive than other similar eateries in Clacton. For example jacket potatoes are at least £1 dearer. Most items on menus seemed to be between 50p and £1 dearer. they must have higher overheads or is it just the captive audience?

We didn't actually eat here, as we're not very fond of canteen food.We are however basing our review on our experience... Walked to the end of the pier, and it started raining. Everyone thought it would be a good idea to go for a cup of coffee. On entering, it was like we were thrown back in time a couple of decades (its more outdated than my nan's front room). We put the decor behind us, joined the canteen queue, bought four fairly expensive cups of coffee, and i use the word "coffee" in the lightest of terms!!! And then we sat at the canteen style tables, and drank our coffee flavoured dishwater. left.IF you can't even get coffee right...???

Only had tea and coffee with cake and was ok, wasn't homemade as I was expecting. Wasn't overly expensive like costa and cost us just over £6. Was lovely to sit outside in the sun.

A reasonably good place to go, plenty of room. The view from the seats is probably it's best asset.

This cafe is clean and serves good plain food and snacks. The hot and cold soft drinks are reasonably priced and made for you. The chips are tasty and freshly prepared to order. The staff are pleasant and the general atmosphere is nice with views from the windows all around out to sea. Nice for a stop off before setting back down the pier.

The Jolly Roger is a CAFE at the end of the pier at Clacton on Sea,Nothing special, ideal to stop for a snack after walking up pier especially on a windy day.Serves the sort of food you would expect from a cafe,Fish and chips with a cup of tea,has a reasonable selection of dishes, all eatable, but nothing to shout about. On a nice day there is nothing nicer than visiting the Pier with all its Amusements and Funfair rides (They do a very reasonably priced WRISTBAND,which means the kids can go on everything all day all for one price)and a stroll up the pier is lovely, looking back towards land is a lovely view, looking out to sea at the wind farms is also very pleasant,so have a cup of tea and a snack in the Jolly Roger Cafe whilst you are there

Tried the Lock and Barrel for lunch today after a long walk from Walton but due to the poor quality food, we will not be returning. I chose the burger which was extremely salty and seemed to have been made with very poor quality meat. I tried eating it but after a few mouthfuls, I couldn’t cope with the taste or texture and left most of my meal. My partner had the prawn linguini which he said was ok and contained plenty of prawns so I think he chose the better option. The table behind us also sent back their jacket potatoes as they were not hot. Despite several disgruntled customers, the staff remained pleasant and were extremely helpful and deducted the cost of my meal from our bill. They also offered the table behind us a free drink. Frinton has lots of eateries and based on our experience today, I would recommend trying one of those instead of the Lock and barrel.

Table table at Bowling Green is simply convenient. Sadly it lacks appeal in many respects. Their prices are reasonable but most definitely match the bland presentation and poor service. We chose to pop in as it was getting late following a hospital appointment. The service was painfully slow and may have been caused by understaffing. The meal, as mentioned was adequate, but totally lacked any presentation skill. Finally the decor and general ambience of the place remains tired and lacking in general upkeep. The decor is badly in need of TLC and the carpets are threadbare and sticky underfoot.
