We were very disappointed. We haven't been to eat at the cafe for a couple of years, so thought we would try it again. There were three of us eating and all chose the veggie quiche option with veg and new potatoes. We also ordered coffees. The coffee was nice. The food was not. We were presented with what tasted like microwaved, reheated quiche. Though the flavour was tasty the texture was not. As for the veg, the undercooked boiled parsnips and overcooked boiled sprouts were a huge disappointment as most were inedible. The new potatoes were bland as there was neither butter or gravy to accompany. We did ask for butter but it never arrived. We sat at the table after our meal for about another half hour and in that time our plates were not cleared. Perhaps they did not want our feedback face to face... All in all a waste of good money as the cost was on the high side for a quiche lunch (£11.99). We didn't tempt fate with the cakes or pudding. : ( On the positive it's well worth going to the garden centre for a look round and to stop for a coffee but - don't have lunch!

We live locally to this establishment, and have visited on many occasions, over the years. However, in recent months, we have noticed that the cakes are far too sweet in texture, if you ask for something to be cooked “well done”, the opposite is given to you, and the overall food selection on offer, is limited. My main complaint, isn’t regarding the standard of food, though; but the rude staff working here. On two separate occasions (the worst incident being only a few days ago), when we arrived at the cafe, we were told that only certain tables, in one section of the cafe, were available for us to sit at. The reason for this, so I have been told by the staff members, is because they don’t want to stay on after hours, to clean additional sections. I do understand this predicament, but, at the time of them saying this, they have been letting other customers sit in the areas that are supposedly ‘closed off’. Letting us sit in the ‘closed off’ sections of the cafe, wouldn’t make any difference to them, with this being the case. Although the cafe clearly states that they are open until 4pm, if you arrive any later than 3pm, you are made to feel like an inconvenience. On several different occasions, we have been told that we are allowed to stay, but must finish within a 30 minute window. It’s like you are on a timer. If you arrive after 3pm, you are only allowed to purchase cakes or drinks. This would typically be fine, but the cafe usually only has two different cakes to choose from. A few years ago, they had a much better selection of cakes on offer. In addition to the staff being offhand and rude, they will mop up the floors around you, whilst you are still eating. You feel rushed, and the experience is awkward. On a recent visit, the waitress made it plainly obvious that we had outstayed our welcome. She started clearing our table, before checking we had finished, and then proceeded to walk around the small section we were sat in, slamming down on the tables, the menu’s, for the following day (including on the table that we were still sat at). In my honest opinion, everything seems like too much trouble for the staff. If you ask for custard with your dessert, instead of cream or ice cream, you are charged an additional amount. If you ask the staff for cutlery, you are told to go and get it yourself. It seems to me, that the staff want to do as little as possible to accommodate their customers. I don’t see us returning to this cafe again! I am hugely disappointed!

Love love this restaurant and in particular can recommend the Tracey Toastie. Lovely venue, great airey garden room, restaurant and also a lovely area to bring your dogs without feeling on the outside. Always friendly and helpful with a great choice of breakfast, lunches and cakes. (Tracey's Toasties is still my favourite). Well worth a visit and highly recommended. Then a great place to shop in the garden centre after x

At time of writing this will say the breakfast here is lovely except found the tea to be a cheap brand.. Thought would visit for lunch disappointed by the very small choice available, Husband had Ham Egg and Chips Ham was called butchers choice but to me it looked nothing special at all what i would describe as cheap ham. I had a sandwich with small salad garnish which included a few crisps which were stale although might be just cheap crisps depends how many they use i suppose. Husband had coffee which when i had breakfast and had coffee was not impressed so this time had tea, Teapot filled right to the brim and just one teabag i noticed when i opened it to give it a stir. It says tea for two which really you need quality tea for which means two teabags, Shame the offerings here could be so much better with a little thought, Would have breakfast again but thats all i would have.

We have been going for numerous years for visit to be it the garden centre or the cafe, we were almost part of the fixtures. We had been having a run of things happening, so in view of the weather , I suggested let when we are out drop for a coffee and cake , my wife thought it was fantastic idea. So we arrived, followed the procedure, my wife read the official board. Then we joined a queue , on arrival at the desk, I said to the lady we have come for some drinks, with that she said what is your table number, now since this virus, we’ve only been twice when things are allowed. So once again it was totally vastly different. Right next to the lady was rows of empty tables, I should add I am disabled and had a assistance dog with myself. I suffer from Military PTSD , so by doing things like this lift me beyond everything. When my wife said we do not have a table number, didn’t know we needed to, the woman said gruffly well it is on the board, your have to get a table number, before I place your order. Now reflect tables around her were empty, could she not just smiled and said look sit yourselves at that table, then ask my wife to nip back to the board and get a number. No she wanted a table number first, now the queue had grown really long , by the time my wife got a number and stood back in the queue, it would have taken a very long while. So naturally when you meet officials who are unhelpful or want things done correctly, you just leave and go home, vowing never to return What a great shame just a warm friendly let me help you, look sit there I will take the table number and place your order in, add that with a warm smile, and I would be rating them five stars rather ranting on about a very unhelpful staff member

I ordered a jacket potato and it had that horrible 'kept warm' or warmed up taste. The topping was ok. My husband had soup , which he liked. I also found it a bit expensive compared to our usual, similar lunches. Also, cutlery should be brought to table and not left out for all and sundry to touch.

This must be one of the best cafes in the area and we've been using it regularly since the first lockdown eased. Staff all take their Covid responsibilities seriously and have created a comfortable safe environment. There's always a warm welcome and friendly service and for us, the food ranks 'best in the area', both in terms of quality and price - we've never been disappointed and would highly recommend. Sandwiches and jacket potatoes are stuffed full of your favourite filling and the hot food selection changes daily. You feel like you're eating al fresco in the winter and can enjoy the outside seating when the weather is fine. What I love the most though is that it's not 'chips with everything' that most cafes in the area seem to think everyone wants. Cannot wait for you to re-open after lockdown 2!

Visited today 5/8 2020 bought a couple of plants decided to have some lunch. I had a cheese/pickle sandwich like most places the cheese is tasteless. Why do they all use cheap cheddar? coffee was barely warm and given one sachet of white sugar per person. Asked for more sugar and could we have brown and up she came with some brown sachets another one each. What is the matter with the staff should know always brown sugar with coffee. Not many customers in there but the tables were left ages before being cleared. Main gripe is they need some flans we were in the actual café part and it soon became very hot indeed. We would not rush back to eat there that is for sure. It could be so much better with better trained staff.

My wife and I visited this cafe and had a bite to eat. I had the full English breakfast and it did not meet my expectations. It was poor quality products swimming in oil and only just warm not even the slightest bit appealing. The coffee was only lukewarm and not nice at all. My wife had a toasted breakfast muffin she didn’t eat the sausage because she said it tasted odd. She was probably right not to as I did eat mine and had a terrible upset tummy afterwards. All in all a poor show, wish we had gone to Morrison’s, it would have been better grub and better value.

Definitely value for money, the food was freshly cooked, table was beautifullly presented, and the roast dinner was plentiful, 4 roast potatoes, plenty of veg, yorkshire pudding, stuffing, sausage wrapped in bacon and 2 large slices of turkey and lashings of gravy. Definitely go back next year. Staff are very friendly and accommodating.

Visited earlier in the year for plants and bought two coffees whilst there. Coffee was awful should have taken it back. Visited again today intending to have some lunch absolute chaos, Said to my husband better have lunch first then look round. Upon arrival car park heaving so much they had attendants out there to assist with space finding. Husband asked if any wheelchairs and one was given and we made our way to the Café. The queue was out by the door husband parked me by a table, Husband went up to look at the menu boards on the wall behind the counter, Whilst he is looking at that the queue is getting longer, I said to a lady at the table next to me what is going on? she replied they have a Christmas fair here today, Thought when husband was pushing me through on arrival never seen all these stalls in here selling stuff before, Said to husband leave it there will no doubt be very little left time you get to be served, Noticed no menus on any of the tables why not? Surely most people come in sit down and peruse the menu to decide what they want before going to the counter, As it was people are getting to the point of being served and then taking up time deciding what they want so delaying the queue even longer. As husband pushed me out to leave it was impossible to look round really what with all the stalls set up selling very expensive items. These places never consider any people in wheelchairs or anybody with a pram, The gaps left between stalls what with the displays that are there all year round is too much in such a small garden centre, I realise at Christmas they all want to make money but this is not a comfortable shopping experience for people. By the price of the Christmas baubles on sale it amazes me do people actually buy new every year for these places to stock so much. If they waited for me to buy new they would go broke. Surely keep for year after year to use even in a throw away society.

Tried the Lock and Barrel for lunch today after a long walk from Walton but due to the poor quality food, we will not be returning. I chose the burger which was extremely salty and seemed to have been made with very poor quality meat. I tried eating it but after a few mouthfuls, I couldn’t cope with the taste or texture and left most of my meal. My partner had the prawn linguini which he said was ok and contained plenty of prawns so I think he chose the better option. The table behind us also sent back their jacket potatoes as they were not hot. Despite several disgruntled customers, the staff remained pleasant and were extremely helpful and deducted the cost of my meal from our bill. They also offered the table behind us a free drink. Frinton has lots of eateries and based on our experience today, I would recommend trying one of those instead of the Lock and barrel.

Table table at Bowling Green is simply convenient. Sadly it lacks appeal in many respects. Their prices are reasonable but most definitely match the bland presentation and poor service. We chose to pop in as it was getting late following a hospital appointment. The service was painfully slow and may have been caused by understaffing. The meal, as mentioned was adequate, but totally lacked any presentation skill. Finally the decor and general ambience of the place remains tired and lacking in general upkeep. The decor is badly in need of TLC and the carpets are threadbare and sticky underfoot.
