Went for Valantines night , superb special menu, brilliant chef , knows what he is doing ,our fist visit , a five star food rating on the door , very warm welcome and good choice of wines , then to the table , decked out with a Rose ....my wife had Salt and Pepper prawns , very succulent , I had beautifully presented scallops with bacon , my wife's main Lamb cutlets . very originally served, I had a massive skate wing ...prawns on top ...followed by Spanish Churros two sauces . very impressive , and so well looked after , bill no to toppy ...my only regret was is was Valantines day only five table occupied ...would I come back again for a Sunday lunch , bring the dog , sit in the bar , you bet , what a gem of a place ...

Sunday Roasts are not my preference, but I took a punt on the Beef roast. Taste & tenderness of the beef and veg (veg not overcooked) was spot on and the quantity was ample. More than enough for me. Friend had Pork roast (he loved it) and red pesto mushroom pasta dish for the veggie (She loved it). If you're a non-drinker/driver, they have Zero Guinness or Zero Heineken. Atmosphere was what you can expect from a good locals/village pub (I'm a Townie visiting friends) with a warm and friendly atmosphere from the punters and quick whit from the Landlady. Plenty of parking and local walks. Only one minuscule issue - Wholegrain mustard or rather lack thereof! 😉 Will return for more. Cheers.

Visited this pub today for lunch. Should have been suspicious at how empty it was. We had left another pub up the road which was packed and unable to serve us. The manager looked miserable and we felt we were an inconvenience. We had to ask for a menu, ask to give our order and ask to pay. Nobody bothered to ask if we wanted a desert or coffee. I went to the bar and asked for coffees but was told coffee machine was broken so she could boil the kettle. We declined and got the bill. Vastly over rated and over paid for a baguette and some grey fish cakes. The pub was cold (did not appear to have any heating on), no background music, no atmosphere, no customers and no service. We will not be back.

Great pub, great real ale and the best value food that is truly amazing these days. If The Jolly Cooper can do meals this good for £8, how come most other establishments can't produce 'home cooked' half as good for double the price? This is an odd place with all the trappings you expect of country pubs these days with outdoor space used for tables, a marquee for cover and the like... I'll start with the good bit. Service was efficient and the young man who served our group of 9 was charming and efficient. Unfortunately, I also have to get to the not so good bit. An amazingly long menu making selecting food difficult which was added to by a lengthy list of items not available. Food when it arrived was a bit variable as some had to be sent back as it was cold in the middle. My hand cut has was a generous portion but it definitely wasn't hand cut and the chunky chips were rather industrial looking. I'm not being difficult as previous reviewers have reported on the variable quality. Apparently the pub tenants might be moving on which might explain erratic nature of things in the kitchen. It's a pity as there are still the bones of a nice country pub here but its difficult to see.

As a local resudent, you want to support your businesses nearby. The Jolly Coopers is lovely for drinks, but the food is an unmitigated disaster. The menu is huge and overwhelming and, every single time we have visited, I place my order only to be told later that something isn't available. The current £8 menu is also very misleading (check the small print!). Tonight's meal was returned - the so-called chicken katsu curry was a tiny portion of clearly packet chicken in a hideous dark brown glutinous sauce. The salad with the squid looked days old. Places like this will not survive with this quality of food.

Another lovely village pub ruined by foul mouthed alkis sitting at the bar. If you want to drive out decent returning customers this is a master class in how to do it. Seeing how many F words you can get in a single sentence should not be a qualification for customer of the month. Eight of us – 4 adults, 4 teens (+ 3 dogs) had the best lunch ever here. Amazing food, with great selection – from massive burgers to Thai green curry – and we were all super-happy with our food. Lots of good specials on offer too, in addition to the normal menu, and all very reasonably priced. The chef also found ways to help us choose fab things for one gluten-intolerant + vegetarian person. Most important, the staff members were totally friendly, helpful and laid-back. We decided to go out for lunch on Easter Sunday at the last minute and I tried to book various eateries only to find that they were all fully booked. The Jolly Coopers however had plenty of availability, with hindsight that should probably have told us something. We ordered two turkey dinners. The food arrived promptly but was served on cold plates and was tepid from the outset. My gravy had a big blob of undissolved stock cube in the middle of the plate. My small ball of Paxo-type stuffing had a rock-hard section which I was not able to cut through with my knife. Portions were large, but the food was so cold that we gave up trying to eat it. Two members of staff, including the chef, spent the duration of our visit sitting in the garden chatting to other diners.

We visited The Jolly Coopers on a Sunday afternoon after bringing the dogs for a big walk up at Wrest Park. I informed them beforehand that I am gluten intolerant and I was able to have a full roast dinner with all the trimmings. The staff came out to let us know our food would be slightly longer as the chef was cleaning down everything thoroughly before preparing my dinner to avoid any cross contamination. To someone who has this condition it was like hitting the Sunday Roast jackpot as sometimes is can be a game of roulette. They brought water over for the dogs and gave us a lovely spot in the corner. We will be back.

My family & I visited The Black Horse for Sunday Lunch as part of a birthday gift. We were warmly greeted and shown to our table, which was tucked away to the immediate left of the entrance in a cosy area. I had the Spiced Beetroot, Red Lentil & Vegan Feta Crispy Rolls as a main course, which was extremely flavourful. I'm glad I chose this, as the only main course option was a nut roast (often the get-out-clause of an inexperienced chef), however after sampling my choice, this was definitely not the case. There were only a couple of minor negatives. The first was the overuse of something resembling micro-cress. There was a huge amount of it on my plate and it was also used in a dessert that one of my family members had. Micro-cress on an apple tart dessert? The other minor negative was that I ordered seasonal veg as a side option. At £5, I wasn't expecting some unseasoned kale and cabbage. Overall, I'd recommend the restaurant as the charm and quality of food is top notch.

First the negatives. Should have realised when I ordered the "Mini" Breakfast. one small sauage, one small rasher of bacon, one egg, small portion of beans and one round of toast £9.50. Very much over priced. My Friend does not like beans, so requested a extra sausage or something else in replace of. This request was rejected therefore his small plate looked very bare for £9.50. Positives, Nice cosy cafe. Quality of food, reasonible to good. Overall, Will not be going there again anytime soon.
