Only place in Bedfordshire worth going to watch live sport. I live in Bedford and travel over every weekend to watch the football in the engine - that's how good it is.

Where do I start? !! So it was the kings coronation and from the moment we arrived we were given complimentary sausage rolls, wraps, muffins and donuts, not what I expected from a local hostelry but I went along with it because that’s what you do on a day like today. Anyway, the landlord was friendly, so much so that he bunged me £0.50, I can only assume as sweetener, knowing he would soon get it back and some, I had a pint or two, the lager was too cold if I’m honest and the sausage rolls could have benefited from a few seconds in a microwave if you don’t mind me saying. The regulars were all soaked, I can only attribute that to the inclement conditions on their journey but it made me feel uncomfortable and I don’t mind telling you. I’m not sure I have ever eaten a pink donut with a beer before but it oddly seemed to work, perhaps a few too many hundreds and thousands (sorry for the pun, I didn’t actually count them to know if that was accurate or not) but here we’re definitely a few. Anyway , I do like this pub, the landlord clearly makes an effort and I do know that he keeps an orange container full of doggie treats which renders him a top bloke in my book, so for me it’s a cracking local, with cold sausage rolls and donuts, what more could you want?! Oh, and the beer seems to be rather delicious, that matters does it not?

If I could love a pub more I would. Kenneth and the staff are warm and friendly, brilliant rugby pub and I believe people visit it to watch millionaires kick a round ball around on the grass and then fall down, I don't see it catching on as a sport in all fairness 😂. Great selection of ales and ciders on tap. They have put so much into the pub with the outside areas and televisions, a better sports pub, meet your friends pub, make new friends because the referee is blind pub you would have to go along way to find. Ladies toilets are spotless which is always a good litmus test for any pub.

Nice pub with a local vib. Small, but good friendly atmosphere and a good selection of real ales, beers and ciders. Visited on a Saturday afternoon for a couple of pints and the pub was showing the football and rugby as well. Nice and warm, as I think they had a real fire going on. Can't really remember as afterwards went to a few more pubs in Ampthill. So all good!

Dropped in after work, and sampled a couple of pints and a couple of pies! The pies (we had steak and ale) were simply delicious. An excellent pie experience. The mash was lovely too, soft and creamy. Extra gravy was offered on demand - some like loads, some like a little. Great bar staff, friendly and welcoming. We would recommend this pub to you, and we will be returning very shortly. Fred and Jules :-)

Found this gem of a boozer on The Camra web site. Fantastic range of beers and ciders. Best bit was there was entertainment, not your usual pub singer, we were entertained by John Verity (ex Argent lead guitar) 2 and a half hours of the finest blues playing.

We often pop into the engine and tender for lunch at work and I can particularly recommend the cheesy chips if you want to eat for under £3. The prawn salad and the bacon and brie baguette is lovely too. All of the food is nicely made and the staff are helpful and friendly although sometimes it takes rather a long time (I suspect them of cooking jacket potatoes from scratch). There are usually some good draft beers too. Great no nonsense pub food.

It started well with a good selection on the menu. When we came to order our breakfast sandwiches my friend asked how much it would be to add an egg to her bacon sandwich, at which point the waitress advised that the prices on the menu had increased so weren't correct & could only say they had gone up by about 50p. On asking for a sparkling water she advised that had also gone up by 20p maybe 30p, these increases were due to the cost of living increase. When we questioned why the menus hadn't been updated she advised there were new owners & it hadn't been done yet but that there was a sign on the wall inside the shop advising of the price increase, we were sat outside but to be honest anyone entering the shop wouldn't have seen it as it would have been behind them. She then brought out the A4 sign. She also tried to find an updated menu which she couldn't find. Firstly I am sure this must be illegal to advertise one price & charge another & secondly a hand written note could have been added to the menu or a copy of the price increase attached to the menu which everyone would have seen. Maybe the new owners should hold fire on the price increase until new menus are available as it may save their reputation. The breakfast sandwiches were very tasty, however the 'glass' that accompanied the sparkling water was in fact a jar with a thread for a screw top. Some might call it funky but not to everyone's taste. Needless to say it wasn't used. There are standards which have to be met & the clear advertising of correct pricing is one of them. We are all effected by the cost of living crisis & on occasions when we do our bit to support local businesses we might be watching the pennies too.
