The John Wallace Llinton in Newport

I visited this establishment on 29 August 2020 and was treated with utter contempt. The staff were rude And made false accusations against me and were unrepentant after realising their mistake and an appolagy was only forthcoming after repeated requests. Humiliated in front of other customers without any consideration toward me. Absolutely disgusted and saddened that a Saturday filled with anticipated joy was tainted by such nasty people.

Set up for covid is excellent, felt really comfortable. Food was good, staff excellent. Well done all.

Enjoyed a lovely lunch here with family. We sat outside due to the lovely sunshine. We took part in the eat out scheme and was very happy with our meal. We ordered a signature steak which came with jacket potato, side salad, onion rings and choice of sauce, two tikka curries which came with rice,poppadoms and naan bread, pasta alfredo with a side of garlic bread, two alcohol drinks and two soft drinks for £20! Lovely meal will go there again.

Today was very impressed with the layout felt more secure than expected. Staff were there with any questions that needed answering. One thing that could be better is the track and trace forms to close to the doors. I missed them on the way in, should be on the bar, a small problem but overall a great visit.

Received unfair treatment in here due to biased and unfair malicious gossip by a member of staff here which was subsequently spread to other establishments in the area,the matter was reported!

We met some friends here for a meal and drinks, the service was quick and efficient, with good prices, the food menu was good and the food was tasty. A good night with great value.

I called in for a pint the larger was good value and tasty the place was large but clean and tidy I wouldn’t recommend

In town on business so called in for a quick bite between meetings i ordered miners benedict and a bacon roll with extra bacon for the wife plus endless coffees for £8 you just cannot fault it. And the food quality was really good.

This used to be a decent place for a meal, but not now. On visiting today we found the bartender made mistakes taking our order that we had to correct umpteen times. Then when the food came one of them was wrong again. Also the table was surrounded by fruit flies landing on us and our food. They were all over the dusty mirror behind us. Hygiene and service has really slipped here. Can’t recommend now

Has to be the cheapest pub in town for drinks. Spacious and a good place to chill for a drink or two. Many regulars and groups gathering here. Well run spoons on a good location.

The worst service we've ever had served any one in front of them and when I said no offence been stood here 15 minutes you've served either side of me it wasn't until a customer said I had been waiting a while she saved me!!! Terrible attitude too!!

Great location in the City Centre, just a short walk from the station. Fast service at the bar, staff were friendly. The food was served promptly, well cooked and superb value for money. Well worth a visit

This pub is in an excellent location in Newport. Very handy coming/going to/from Rail Station. Very clean place including toilets. Nice place to sit and enjoy your food and drink in. Would recommend.

I visited on Thursday 16 May with my brother, as a special treat following a difficult appointment at the Royal Gwent Hospital. We decided to sample the managers special which was a 12oz rump steak and put our order in for 2 meals, both well done. When the meals arrived, my brother’s steak was perfectly cooked, however mine was extremely rare (my worse nightmare). I politely took the meal back and explained that the order was for well done and asked for a fresh steak to be cooked. I waited and waited, watching lots of meals coming out of the kitchen but not mine, I asked how much longer as it was now 20mins - the waitress was not at all apologetic and said the steaks were thick and took a while to cook..... 30 mins later (by this time my brother had finished his meal) the steak arrived and was black, I tried to find a part of the meat that was edible but had to give up it was like eating rope. I then asked To speak to the pub manager James (who was actually the person who served me) he was very defensive to start off with and it was just as well I had taken a photo of the meal because he was not at all helpful and had not seen the plate I sent back. When he saw the photo, he immediately changed his attitude and offered to refund the full amount of both meals, which I accepted. I regularly have meals here and this is the first time I have had a problem, but I think it will be a while before I will have the confidence to eat here again, when that steak arrived, I felt I had been punished because I sent it back.

We visited her on Saturday morning for breakfast, first they forgot my husbands sausages on his breakfast, then he discovered a long blonde hair on his plate. I complained to the manager he apologised we had a refund, but not had food there since that day as the waitress still walks around with no net on her long blonde hair

Visited on a Saturday 1.30pm prime time , Two staff working on the bar, one being the manger. We queued for ages as only one part of the bar was open ! Dirty tables and floors , all eight of us ordered food and it was all stone cold ! This place needs a make over of staff and a refurb ! Won’t be going there again

Such a lovely place, unfortunately you do have a long wait to be served. Everytime we go, there is always a long wait to order drinks and food.

Went in on 9th January, 3pm and ordered Ham, eggs and chips. Food came out quick and I know why. The chips were stone cold. The waitress said they will do you a new meal. 4-5 minutes later another meal came out nice and hot. Ham ok, eggs ok - chips looked suspiciously like my old chips re-dipped in the fryer - or the oil wasn't hot enough in fryer. I've been in the pub food trade for 18 years and I know what re-dipped chips looked like. Either way, the chips were full of grease, the taste of grease stayed on my mouth for ages afterwards. What plonker would put cold chips on a plate? Obviously a plonker who couldn't give a sh*t what they send out! to paying customers. Waste of money. Waitress was helpful though, so no complaints there.

We have visited many times my husband likes the beer selection here over the Queens it can get noisy on Friday and Saturdays or match days. The last few meals we’ve had have not been so good my pizza was rock hard on the one occasion, my risotto stone cold on another and I had to send it back as I know eating rice that’s not hot can give you an upset stomach. Today we tried again my husband had to send his chicken burger back it was like cardboard my pizza though was good. We rarely send any meals back so it has to be very bad before we do. Staff were good and no arguments meals were sorted. I know it’s cheap so I take this into account i don’t expect a perfect meal In Wetherspoons but it has to be at least average. I don’t know if they’ve changed their chef as it was always better than the Queens for food but I’ll be eating their in future until they improve.

We went here as the queens were not serving food. I waited at the bar whilst 4 school girls ordered and swapped every item on the breakfast for something else. But i was in the queue and waited and ordered ours.

Like the majority of weatherspoons pubs, the food is decent and the drinks are cheap, staff seemed friendly enough.

Had a family meal for a birthday while food was good and quick the service is slow as hardly any staff. The tables are cluttered and left this way for ages so had to clean off the table ourselves good for cheap food

I've lost count of the times I have eaten meals here. Mind you, it helps that it's close to where I live.

This is the second time I’ve visited the John Wallace Linton but I’ve never been early enough to enjoy a breakfast. As we were early we ordered one large breakfast and two traditional. Excellent value for money £3.45 for a delicious breakfast and a drink. Absolutely moorish and extremely tasty. Speedy service even though there were lots of other customers enjoying breakfasts. Fantastic visit and really enjoyed ourselves.

we had two steaks, both came without mushrooms , which was on menu. then I had beans instead of peas, which was cold as if just been got straight out of tin. they did bring two mushrooms out, ,but when I found out my beans was cold I took my meal back up to the bar the girl did not seem to care just took plate of me no sorry or anything. I blame the chef he is in charge, he should train his staff to learn menu and what is served with what meals how did he let cold food leave his kitchen? may be he should take more notice of what is coming out of his kitchen and what his staff is up to . there is no excuse for this sort of error. will not be returning like my food hot.

Ate here last night while staying nearby. Am I alone in thinking that Wetherspoons has a rapidly declining attitude towards customer service ?.

Sent him for breakfast my 1st visit to this pub I ordered 2 breakfast for me and my mate ,it took it's time to get to me but when it did was it worth waiting for NO it wad not it was me t to be a large breakfast is was missing mushroom and tomato the eggs where flattened by a hammer the rest of it was ok when I said to a staff member just o well never mind did not wont to know this is the 1st spoons ever to get a bad Mark from me but as I all ways say try for yourself as I could be a one off

Used the app to order. Drink arrived prompt but both my lager drinking friend and I (on Magners) felt we were drinking watered down alternatives.

We always visit a Spoons whenever possible our son is a bit of a Spoons fanatic! I have to say this rates as one of the best. Lovely surroundings, very clean. Excellent service with the food arriving quickly,piping hot and very tasty. The gourmet burgers are superb and for 3 adult meals and drinks,including an alcoholic drink, all for £16 why would you want to go elsewhere. The clientele left a lot to be desired but that’s not the fault of the venue as the staff where very helpful and pleasant. All in all a very enjoyable experience. Thank you.

This is part of a chain of pubs and one that I regularly eat in and have done so for a number of years.

Went for a night out the service for drinks wad gadt and efficient despite it being very busy also ordered food which was great value wholesome and tasty. Overall a great night with good value food and drink and good service.

Good to have seating with easy access of bar, coffee machine and ladies all at once!!! Impressed with this as most places hide the ladies and make gents easy to get to.

I visited this pub on a work visit to Newport. The pub is just a few minutes walk from the railway station and had plenty of tables and places to sit. It was a quiet night, and so I had no problem finding a table, and then ordered food.

Just popped in for breakfast everything was good the originals service at the bar, the speed of the food being cooked and then the quality of the food which was good. We really eloped everything about the experience.

every time we come to Newport this is where we eat excellent food and atmosphere although last time we came there was a loud party on the next table good choice of kids meals

My first visit to this Weatherspoons and I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food. I had scampi and chips ( the British classic ) and it was delicious . Incredible value and a friendly ambience.

We popped in for a meal on Monday evening our starters were lovely but that is pretty much where it ends, baring in mind we were the only people dining at the time they didn't bother to clear the starters before bringing our mains out instead we played Tetris to add our mains plates onto the table. At this point I asked if it was possible to have an additional blue cheese sauce as I enjoyed the one on our starter to which I was told;

I have used this bar which is a Weterspoons, on may occasions. The alcoholic and non alcoholic beverages are inexpensive...

There are some wetherspoon that are great but this was ok. Had the mixed grill and meet was fine but...

Bastante tranquilo, ya que sólo estaba en Newport para el lunes por la noche, pero una buena selección de Gales, tanto sidras empaquetado y embotellado.

I ordered a steak and ordered it medium well but to my surprise what was given to me was well done. Tried to complain about my food and food was taken back to the kitchen only for them to return to me and said that they couldn't do anything about it because it was medium well. I had a fair share of steaks and I know what medium well looks like. It certainly doesn't look like this and it's too dry to be medium well. I think they need to train their chefs on how to cook steaks so this does not happen again! too dry and too chewy for a medium well!

This is a Pub which opens at 8 am for breakfast and was therefore ideal for us before taking the train for the short ride from Newport to Cardiff.The Pub is in the City Centre and a short walk from Newport Railway Station.The breakfast menu is reasonable in terms of variety and price - my wife opted for Pancakes with Maple Syrup while I went for theEggs Benedict. Hot Chocolate went down well with our meal.Several other diners were also having breakfast here - you order at the bar with payment up front and your meal is delivered to your table.

Came here for a few drinks with hubby.. quite quiet as it was a Monday yet tables still had empty glasses and plates from previous customers, at least an hour when customers had left Partner went to get served asked for a different glass tried making convo with the boy behind the bar to have a response of "Yeah whatever" pretty poor customer service

We booked a staff party at the John Wallace Linton. Staff were efficient and helpful on the phone. Our table was reserved upon arrival. We ordered our drinks and food, the staff were very pleasant (making jokes and very conversational!) Before our food came out, the staff brought 4 bottles of Perry to our table (on the house) from their boss which was extremely nice of them!! Food was hot and tasty, no complaints!! We were really pleased with the overall experience!! A big thank you to all that served us you helped make our staff party as great as it was!!!

We went out Friday night the pub was good cheap and fast and efficient the staff seemed really switched on and aware of who was next etc.So all in all a good service cheap drink quite nice ambiance

This pub was busy but not overcrowded and service at the bar was quick considering it was a Friday night. The atmosphere was welcoming and warm on a cold night. Fish and chips was as good as from a good chip shop and less money than some so a win all round. There is a separate families area which I thought was a very good idea.

Call in this morning for breakfast, extremely good value very quick service and a reasonable breakfast.

We went in a large group on Steak night last Tuesday. The food cannot be beaten for value. We like this particular Spoons outlet because the beer and the staff are great.

Even at 1730 on a Friday night in December the service was fast, friendly and efficient, even though the bar was very crowded with early Christmas revellers.

While in Newport we decided to have some lunch here,we both decided to have the mixed grill, this is one of the best weather spoons in Newport,the staff are very friendly and the food never takes long to be served, the mixed grill was cooked to perfection, oh and we each had a bottle of hazy hog cider which is deliscious, I would highly recommend this weatherspoons and highly recommend the mixed grill, well done, will visit again soon.

Do noy ever go there. Took five minutes to get served with a drink and the place was empty. Went out for a smoke staff tole my drink and when i tried to pay for another staff just ignored me, The place is a disaster and i am a regular or used to be

So I went here with the family for a nice meal and a catch up and it just seemed to be one problem after another. First the mixed grill and sirloin we ordered we was told 10 mins after ordering they didn't have. Then we were told they only have one replacement steak, which i know they had more as i had another replacement steak, so I had to refund one steak and then when the food arrived it was overcooked. We then waited half hour for a replacement by then everyone else has finished. We spoke to the manager who didn't realy seem to care and just blamed it on staff shortages. Would not recommend .

Great location for weary travellers returning to Newport by train or bus. Also ideal for fuelling up before a journey. Or any other reason if you're a bit peckish or want a drink. We were impressed by the standard of the food. Our order arrived promptly. My burger was delicious, and my companion's steak was a good size and perfectly cooked. Washed down with a couple of glasses of red for me and cider for himself. Nice chat with a local, and then on to the next leg of our journey.

I've been using this pub for the last few weeks to have my dinner and I'm happy with the food quality, service speed and general cleanliness.

We decided to eat here on Wednesday to have the chicken club with a drink, we both ordered the chicken combo, a chicken breast, 2 southern fried chicken strips and 4 buffalo wing's one with chip's and one with a side salad, we didn't have long to wait, both had chip's on so when said one was with a side salad she was going to take one with chip' and take the chip's off, but didn't and we still got the side salad, well done that staff member, the food was excellent and I would highly recomend this pub. The staff are very friendly. Will definately go back.

After a long day playing golf we decided not to eat where we were staying, and headed into Newport.We ate at The John Wallace last year and it was just the six of us, this year it was thirteen of us, and it was a bit of a sham on our side with almost all of us shouting our orders at the young lad behind the bar, who remained cool calm and collected.....Order done and in about 10 minutes or so all thirteen orders came out, cooked to perfection, hot and very tasty.......The plus side great food, great staff, food cooked to 11pm at night, close to the train station and taxi rank.The down side, don't sit outside, every other person is begging.

Very large pub near the railway station.Lots of all day drinkers who are well away even in the morning.having said that I love the excellent selection of real ales though it can take a while to get served at times.Typical Wetherspoons menu and ,though I have not eaten there,the food looks pretty good.One bonus for those with mobility problems-toilets are on the ground floor.

My favourite Wetherspoons.Food is great quality, atmosphere is lovely, and all at a great price.Can't fault it!

Ate here on Saturday night and again on Sunday morning for breakfast while staying nearby in the travelodge. This place is quieter than the other Wetherspoons ( the Queens ) just around the corner.Food was good, although I really didn't appreciate the barman pulling half a pint of my Abbott ale, leaving it to settle and the other guy then emptying the barrel leaving me with an inferior pint. Never mind, it was back on later.Sunday breakfast was OK, except the baked beans which were Luke warm at best. What never ceases to amaze me are the number of people already sinking beers at breakfast time - one bloke had 2 pints while we were there and another seemingly respectable woman had a pint decanted into 2 halves so that she didn't look like a hardened drinker !.Word of warning - this isn't one of Newports "better" areas....twinned with a Syrian refugee camp if I am not mistaken.

A group of retired friends meet on the last thursday of each month at The John Wallace Linton, at least we used to. The last three monthly visits have been met with long queues at the bar due to lack of staff and during last visit, when waiting to order food i was 'overlooked' in the queue in favor of Admiral insurance staff who work in adjacent building and now seem to get 'priority' treatment. We have been coming to this Wetherspoons regularly for the last three years but no longer.

Called in for a drink on a busy Saturday night quite late at about 9:30 PM. It was very busy so we didn't really expect to be able to order food. When we found they serve until 11 PM it was good news.We went for the chicken tikka masala which we shared between two of us with an extra bowl of chips. Even though I'm sure it is preprepared or from a packet it was excellent. Very tasty and not too dry or runny.

Went to this wetherspoons for birthday breakfast it was today sunday. Breakfast was good until my daughter had a hair in her toast...They did other to get more toast we declined

Very poor breakfast. I've always rated very highly of the whetherspoon's breakfast but this is the worst I've had. Egg was hard hidden by the toast on top, bacon tastes burnt (it wasn't) and as for the tomato it was hard, hot on the outside and cold in the middle. Only good was the beans, sausage and toast.

My wife and I decided to have the two meals for £7.99 and we weren't disappointed, we both had the steak and kidney pudding which was delicious, the staff are really friendly here, we didn't have long to wait for our food, this is the best weather spoon's we have eaten in yet, well done, I would highly recommend it. We will eat in here again.

We visited for breakfast on a Saturday morning. The pub is obviously very popular and was busy, we got a table fine though. The usual good value Wetherspoons breakfast menu. Food came out quick and was great, and piping hot too. Well worth a visit.

We all enjoyed our food staff were really friendly just missed a couple of items off our order but easily resolved. For the price the service is amazing :-)

My wife and me decided to call in for breakfast and we were very impressed with the service and how quick they were at serving our breakfast, we couldn't fault the breakfast, the plates were warm, so all the food on it was hot, I would go so far as to say this is the best breakfast we have had at a weatherspoon's , would highly recomend it well done keep it up will definately call again.

Fourteen of my golfing pals visited the John Wallace Linton last night as is our habit on a regular basis. As it was 'steak night', most of us enjoyed a variety of steaks on offer which included a free alcoholic drink. I had the rump steak which was cooked just as I like it and my friend sat next to me had the Aberdeen Angus which, for a £2 supplement, looked an ample meal for the hungriest of men.We visit this pub regularly as it is such good value for money and they have a special menu each day of the week backed up with a large choice from their main menu.

We used to visit regularly....great staff and always a good atmosphere..... for some reason they have lost all the good staff.....place looks grubby.....toilets used to be spotless but are now dirty.....!! Please bring old staff back!!

Myself and two friends went there back last week and ordered a few drinks and food. The barman/waiter which served me went by the name of Ryan (Of what I can remember) the service provided by that member of staff was amazing. I can't eat anything with gluteal, so I requested to see the gluteal free menu, to which he got the menu and individually went through every item for me, and gave me a breakdown of the ingredients used. This was very kind of him, and the extra care and effort really did make a difference. I don't normally write reviews, but I needed to this time. Will definitely be changing my weekly habits and making the John Wallace my new place to eat. Susan xx

Don't usually review Wetherspoon pubs (all of which are great for real ale and great value), but this one deserves a mention due to it's veggie sausages and mash being far better than in England. the addition of cheese, leeks and herbs makes a massive difference. Otherwise, good service, great range of beers, one of the better Wetherspoons for food.

This is with out doubt the best Spoons in Newport took my daughter on 17th November two mixed grills cooked to perfection and served within ten minutes of order Pub was very busy so we did have to wait to have table cleared when food arrived but thats acceptable as it was busy

The John Wallace Linton is located right in the centre of Newport, close to the Railway Station and across the street from the late night clubs (this is the reason why many people are choosing the pub as a "warm-up" before going to club). The prices are ok, the service quite fast and there are a lot of drinks and foods from where you can choose.

We usually visit on a Saturday early evening when it's packed with people. The atmosphere is always noisy and good natured, service is great and both food and drink are standard quality at excellent value. It's a city centre Wetherspoons...you know its going to be packed, cheap and cheerful. This place is true to type but with fantastic service included and the added benefit of being close to the station and always screening live sport which adds to the atmosphere.

There last night and had the surf and turf. The steak was ordered rare and was very close and the quality of the meat was great. Would recommend

Amazing visit.Kyleijh, Sean and Joshua were an amazing teamthe kindness the service the care and even after care which is somewhat rare in this time and day.I noticed that there was a problem.at the bar with a very rude client. however Kyleijh felt with this with such professionalism.Its not an easy place to work in Newport as everyone knows however to see the staff show such care and pride in there work was something else.Thank you John Wallace Linton Newport Team.PS The food was hot and came quick

I have heard that this Witherspoons has a reputation for good steaks and I was working o the construction of the new shopping mallso a chance to try out. What followed was that I would go there on Steak night every Tuesday the food was that good. For about £6.50 I got a Steak Dinner and a pint. The price could have been double and still be value. I did pay extra for the larger 14oz steak one night and still it was less than £9 however I found more taste in the 8oz smaller steaks. I tried as a comparison a few other Witherspoons since on a Tuesday and none match up to the Newport experience, not even when its one of the other Witherspoon pubs in Newport. So a big thanks Newport the efforts are appreciated .

Me and a group of friend went here for breakfast last Sunday. Food was with us within 10 minutes of ordering however they did mess up our order, but will give them credit as they rectified the issues straight away. Food was lovely and was inexpensive.. Will be going again.

Went for a breakfast and was pleasantly supprised. I had a small breakfast and my daughter a large. Mine came with a latte my daughters a apple juice. I ordered a large apple juice and the girl advised my that it would be £2.00 dearer than a medium size. She did not have to do that. The meal came to less than £8.00. We did not have to wait long for it to come and enjoyed the breakfast when it arrived. For what we paid it was very good.

Just popped in for a capuccino. Can't speak highly enough about the bar staff. The lady in front of me had a massive order and the guy serving her was lovely and apologised for keeping me waiting. The other bar tender Sean was also lovely. He knew I'd been waiting a while and gave me the capuccino free. Between the two of them they'd managed to keep me smiling through the wait, Well done :) I'm going to stay for another coffee and probably something to eat now too!

Only dislike is it gets crowded but that's because it has so many good points like good reasonably priced food from bar snacks to real restaurant style eating, right down to just a cup of tea and everything in between.

Very good meal had the brunch cracking value and good service and food served within ten minutes . Wife enjoyed the salmon

Situated near Newport railway station,extremely handy for travellers,this restaurant,is verypopular,and provides very good service and food.It is always half-full at midday,and latercan be quite packed.The Monday speciality is Mexican style servings up to 11.30pm,andvery tasty they can be too.A "Quesadilla" is a real platefull,my partner had"Salmon salad",with drinks,which only came to £12.58,--thanks to Wetherspoon pricing.I will be callingthere again when shopping in town.

Don't normally have this kind of standard of food when at wether spoons, but what a cracking burger! Freshly cooked for a change and I cannot fault it! - brilliant. Will definitely be eating here again, cheers chef!

Spent a few lunch times here while in the city on business. Cheap drinks in the usual weatherspoons style. Staff not bad if a bit aloof compared to the queens around the corner. Biggest drawback again the local clientele which is not the establishments fault but even so make it a less popular watering hole.

The most rocking place in Newport at 2o'clock on a Tuesday afternoon! Fact! There must be an oap special on or some other secret because it's as full as a pub on game day

We went their for our dinner with a drink. The services was fantastic of excellent staff are friendly and polite. The sweet chilli egg noodles was fantastic and spot on.

My first visit for several years, on a Saturday night, early evening. The place was full of mostly done-up older people in Newport-Style Glad Rags looking for a cheap but entertaining night out. Drinks were cheap but service was slow-ish due to the numbers waiting to be served. Staff were friendly.I was intrigued by the group on the next table.
