The John Gilbert in Salford

Went for a Christmas meal , 4 of us. Mid afternoon, place was absolutely freezing, Entrance was blocked by workmen lifting paving stones and digging, had to use steps ,which was very difficult for my mother. Then we all wanted Turkey only to be told , they had run out. So had fish, which would have been excellent, if severe on hot plates, it was just warm, and seriously this was a shame as this could had been an excellent meal.

We had our Christmas dinner here this year for the first time and we will definitely be returning! Food was lovely and the service was great. Friendly staff and a warm atmosphere. Thank you!

Ended up coming down last minute with friends. I didn't know too much about the place, however thought I should give it a go, what a time I had. The new manager seems sound aswel, is right la. Ordered some food, to which I'll admit, I have been critical of other places in the past, however this was five star. Thank you, I shal be returning.

Always greeted with a lovely welcome from the staff, I book a table using the online website, which is easy to use, the surroundings are always nice and clean and Christmas Decorations are up, came for the quiz night which is great fun, the staff always think ahead and know your round of drinks so you can concentrate on the game, though we don’t always know the answers ha ha, just enjoy the evening as a whole. Staff always friendly and say goodbye too, only thing I can suggest is maybe has a designated driver free drink through the Christmas period available

We got looked after by Ste all night, really made our experience!

Gorgeous Small Plates agree portions. We had 5 … and all were delicious. Even asked for a doggy bag for the halloumi and sausages and staff were happy to accommodate. Service with a smile. 4 stars on food only because no decaf coffee (which was unusual for JG.) 👏

Relaxing and enjoyable catching up with friends and staff. Experience is always friendly and hospitable. The only negative is the cost of “Madri” which the most expensive in the area

Nice environment, lots of choices in beer, food ok: but limited menu

We came to watch the Man City v Liverpool game. I came with 2 friends. I have not been coming very often since I felt it had deteriorated a bit. However, I was pleasantly surprised. The staff were really courteous. Selection of drinks was excellent and the comfort and look of the place was a very pleasant surprise. I love the fact that it's a great place to watch a football game without it becoming or feeling like a sports bar and that meant the clientele were very different.

It was empty more staff than customers didn't stay long as we were freezing. Didn't bother to order food.

Really friendly staff and a good festive menu. We enjoyed 3 small plates and nachos between us and were pleased with the quantities on each plate.

We had my daughter in laws baby shower here... All though we were seperated in two rooms it was cornered off. And it was a really nice experience lovely atmosphere.. The hot buffet was one of the nicest buffets I've had... Staff lovely and helpful... Highly recommend really enjoyed it. Nice place to eat and drink

Terrible food cold and poor quality. Atmosphere was cold to eat in. Avoid at all costs save your hard earned money!!!

We were there for a wake. We had a buffet and it was very good. It could have done with salad or something green but it was not your run of the mill finger food

Went in the John Gilbert for dinner and chose the fish and chips advertised as Crispy Battered Atlantic Cod With Thick -Cut Chips at £16.45 . On receiving our meals we received what I would describe as a kids potion of a frozen fish ( which was obvious because both our fish were of the same size and shape which were both watery when cut into ) a table spoonful of mushy peas in a small pan and our thick cut chips Not . Would we go back to eat there again 💯 not a chance disgusting.

Visited on a Saturday afternoon and was greeted with a lovely, friendly welcome from a lady who I assume (I may be wrong) is the landlady. She took the time to chat with us and was super friendly. We took advantage of the £2 pints of Pravha on offer and had a fantastic afternoon! Lots of TV screens showing the England game also. Great place to watch the match! Will return.

I'm staying in the Novotel nearby for business, popped in for some dinner. Nice and simple menu, good atmosphere, friendly staff and the Iron Steak was delicious. Thanks!

Credit where credit is due 🥰 Not been here for many years …but wow I was very pleasantly surprised with the whole experience. We only went for a quick tea, not planned; but we absolutely loved the food and polite staff members. The main dish steak was absolutely perfect and more than reasonably priced. Compared to local restaurants and this place is well underrated. It’s not ram-packed liked it used to be years ago which is a crying shame I feel because it deserves to be. Maybe it’s not seen as trendy any more but we would definitely go back again. Next time planned :-) The staff were great; Polite and courteous. And again prices …. Nothing Is cheap these days but we got two mains and two sides for £44 which I feel is a great price considering we had two steak dishes.

We had a lovely meal with the family here at John Gilbert, whilst on our stay at the nearby Novotel. Great food, great service and good value for money, especially the steaks we had! Nothing was too much trouble for our server Paige.

Very quiet when we went (7pm on a Monday) but staff really nice, polite and attentive. Food delicious and came out quickly. Katsu burgers and kids fish and chips. 🤤

My parents went there for lunch at the start of last week so it might have been the back end of July and they told me that they were not happy with their food they told one of the workers that work there and they just didn't seem interested I feel like that's very bad customer service it's like they went there and they said to me in the food were very small portions prices have gone up but smaller portions and the food wasn't that good they went there because I recommended it so when they come back and told me how bad it was I was not happy maybe they had enough day maybe the worker was having a bad day but not happy with the service

We stopped in here on our way back from RHS Bridgewater gardens. Had a drink and some small plate tapas. Service was fast and friendly. The food was good and the pub was clean (although the menus were a bit tatty). It’s a pleasant, modern place and I’d visit again.

Visited here for the first time to try the pub and food. My mother had a gluten free meal and myself had food. My mother enjoyed hers but unfortunately later had come home and been violently sick with all the food, be wary to visit here for gluten free foods. Disappointed and expensive drinks for what it is

Cannot fault the John Gilbert. After speaking to Sarah we put all arrangments in place for mums funeral buffet. Her care and attention together with private area for our guests was just right. The food was excellent . The pub itself including toilets are spotless. Area outside to sit and enjoy . We have used this pub often as its central location for motorway access is great for our visiting family. Also visiting family from USA stay near by when in Manchester so we use the John Gilbert as our meet up place. This is just the right place and location for us.

Fantastic service, lovely food and well run family pub. I regularly visit with my two young children, the staff always go out of their way to make us welcome. We have attended the family fun days at Easter, Christmas and Halloween and the land lady always puts so much effort into putting activities on and fun things for the kids to enjoy!

My partner and I have just returned from an excellent visit to this pub. We were staying nearby and needed a meal that was not too heavy. We shared 5 small plates and a bottle of wine. It was all very good. The staff were great. It was just what we wanted.

Had a poor experience when going for lunch with my boyfriend today. Working in hospitality ourselves, we know that people can have bad days however, the blonde lady behind the bar had a bad attitude towards us from the get go. We took a seat after a lovely greeting from a lady with red hair (who we think is a manager) and chose our food. I went up to order and the blonde lady wouldn’t let me put a word in. I asked about having no mayo on the BLT and she said it was already mixed in which is fair enough. I tried to find something else I’d want off the menu as I told her I was quite a picky eater and she kept firing different dishes at me as if she were rushing me to make a decision (bare in mind there was no queue at the bar and the pub was quite quiet). I chose something off the menu and was given a dirty look and asked “are you sure you want that? It’s got sauce on it. If you’re picky get a kids burger.” I was very offended by her blunt, sarcastic comment and it made me feel very uncomfortable for the rest of the meal. I went back to the table and told my boyfriend of the situation and he noticed how rude she seemed to be towards me. Like I said, I know that some people have bad days and I wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt. However, I feel that her mannerisms were frankly very rude. Even if she had a bad day, she shouldn’t be taking it out on customers. I’m quite disappointed as I have always been a fan of the John Gilbert especially for drinks and the quiz but after this encounter I’m quite put off on going again.

John Gilbert is the best place I’ve for a very long time. Absolutely delicious and just what I need in the morning to fill me up for the day. Absolutely gorgeous and I’ll certainly come again!

It was alright. The lad behind the bar seemed seriously over run. Delivering meals and serving drinks.

Disappointing when you can’t order starter and main! Was told it will all come at the same time 🙄 cancelled the starters only ordered main ! Won’t be coming here again to eat ☝️

The sunday roast tasted like it was warmed up from the week before Couldn't cut through the beef or Yorkshire pudding even after we asked for a steak knife ,and it took at least 40 minutes to arrive, and there was hardly anybody in there 😖

Reserved a section for leaving drinks after my last day at work. Great communication and was smooth and easy to reserve a space! The pub was lovely and cosy and food amazing 🥰

This was my second time visiting this charming and historic pub and it was well worth it. The beer is varied and there is something for everyone with the hand pulled ales being especially good. We ordered a couple of the smaller plates to share one of which was the cod goujons .....wow! They were utterly superb and not to be missed. From looking at the other food delivered the standards here are very high and also consistent. A special word for the amazing and attentive staff who were working on Sat 24th Feb 2024, they were so very kind and friendly. The pub was busy but they were so efficient and so skilled at keeping on top of things - an absolute credit to Greene King and the pub. This is a beautiful place to go for a drink or a bite to eat and even has live sport on. There are so many little corners to find to feel cosy and even an events/function room tucked away. Even the toilets were absolutely spotless, this place is a true hidden gem and I can't wait to come back again. Don't just drive past, call in and see for yourselves.

I've not eaten here so cannot rate food but they sell peroni on draft and have live music most weekends. Staff are friendly and the pub is fantastic. Well worth a visit!

Came here for a Sunday roast this afternoon. Beef was so tender and soft, roast potatoes were crispy, fluffy and well seasoned. The best potato’s I’ve had in a restaurant. Very generous portions with lots of veg (normally restaurant roast are tiny portions). Staff were lovely and attentive, only thing is it was a little chilly as I’m assuming the heating wasn’t working. 9/10 for the roast!

Great Pub, Have been coming here for a long town and seen both good & bad landlords. Now the establishment is being run by an enthusiastic lovely lady . She has made changes for the better. It is warm & inviting place, good service, friendly staff. good food. We come as a couple, we bring family for meals. will be there again on Sunday... Keep up the good work.

The lovey lady now running this establishment has made such an impact. Its a pleasure to visit. we now pop in 3time a week. What a peaceful location for lunch with my disabled brother. The staff were pleasant and served good food to .

The place was cold heating not work properly, card machine not working properly had to go back to the bar and do my card again to find out it was because the machine was not fully charged. We order a dessert with our meal when the waitress came to take our plates a way we told her we had order and paid for dessert this was at 3-15 at 3 -45 still not received them by this time we had already been to the bar and asked about them in the end we asked for our money back . Sorry would not go again

Beautiful place. Beautiful food. Beautiful people. The service was lovely. Very helpful and polite. Although I didn't eat food I definitely had food envy. It all looked amazing. The facilities were beautiful and clean. They offer the hiring of rooms which was great to see. I will keep this place in mind for any special occasions. Ooo there is a one way drive /parking system so when arriving in the dark, go past the building and then turn right. Also there are lots of posh cars parked up so must be a nice place 😉...

No Atomphere. Freezing cold. Place is a cold hole. Do not visit. When it first opened, it was a jem. Green King have destroyed a decent pub. As they do with most of there pubs.

We came in last night (myself, partner and my daughter) for tea & a few drinks. The food was LOVELY! The drinks were nice too, especially my Halloween cocktail. The bar staff especially the older lady was so accommodating, so friendly and even made my daughter a Halloween ‘mocktail’, she was over the moon! Would definitely recommend for service and food.

Kitchen open till 9pm very chuffed as this is a pub. Not your usual pub grub either, waitress calls "pub tapas" ha! had the squid (bit of a small portion,) Karange chicken (yummy) and halloumi (HAD WATERMELON ON AND SOMEHOW WORKED!) pleased with our meals most definitely and will be returning to this beautiful gem.
