I’ve been visiting this pub since the old Star days, and it’s reinvention as the JW, Liz the former landlady did an exquisite job of transforming it to a staple pub for the Cheadle community for many years. Unfortunately the new owners don’t have the same drive or passion to keep this reputation. They seem happy to keep the custom of the lower class of society in their establishment. Which is a shame when compared to how the former landlady had transformed the pub into THE central pub of Cheadle. Avoid at all costs if you want a nice social drink - you may accosted by an angry local who has the protection of the staff. Such a shame.

I was having a quiet drink with friends when two men came to stand at the bar, glaring at us and making comments to one another. We ignored this until it became awkward and intimidating and I said "What's up?" The situation then escalated and voices were raised. The bar staff claimed that we had "both said things", rather than deal with the troublemakers. The person on the bar referred to one of them by name - clearly a regular, being pandered to. When I asked the bartender what we had said/done wrong, he just walked away. Later, one of the men shouted "inbred c**ts" at us across the pub. Quite rich given that he looked like Gollum. Again, the approach was to share the blame with our table. One of them then walked past our table muttering insults under his breath. Someone at our table said 'What was that?' At this point, someone (I've since learned that it may have been the landlady) jumped up and approached my friend, claiming that HE had started the trouble and at the same time, being rather friendly with the troublemaker. It was clear just by looking at our demeanor vs theirs, who was out looking for trouble. Had it been people younger than ourselves, this would've been quite a threatening experience. The staff sided with a couple of bullies because they know them. They knew exactly what was going on, but chose to pretend otherwise. In the end, we left because we it was made pretty clear to us who they would rather have in the pub. The anger that the (presumed) landlady showed to us was baffling. If this is the vibe the new management are going for then I'd recommend swerving it and walking down the road to the White Hart.

I was sat replying to a message on my phone when a drink slid off the table onto me… clearly the table was on a slight tilt as this happened more than once. The woman behind the bar came over and said “well it hasn’t happened before so it must be you”. As if sitting there with a pint soaked into your jeans isn’t bad enough…. Good beer but rude staff.

We went into The James Watts today as we've been here a few times and know they have a great selection of cask ales. We have always had ok service here but I wouldnt say outstanding however today with the new covid rules it was simply awful. We were greeted at the door and asked for track and trace and asked to use sanitizer which we did. We were sent to a table with a laminated A4 paper which had a drinks menu on one side and the other side said something along the lines of Please serve me, the man who greeted us said he would be with us shortly and to use the sign when we wanted to order. We put the sign in good view of the man and waited as he was clearly busy however he served at least two other tables who arrived after us. As we got annoyed at waiting we decided to leave and he said as we left thanks I said we didn't even get served a drink he completely ignored me and walked away!! At least the Crown further up the road had great service and are following the covid guidance perfectly!!

This is by far, the best pub for miles in any direction, the Landlady Liz, runs an excellent pub and keeps a great cellar. I have recommended this pub to countless people since it reinvented itself from being The Star, which was a complete dive. When this pub opened after the relaunch, nobody could believe how beautiful the place was, stunning interior with a great choice of well kept, reasonably priced beer. The pub went from strength to strength until Covid........ on reopening, suitable and appropriate measures were put in place and rightly enforced by the excellent staff. No issues, same great Landlady, surroundings and warm welcome. So what’s changed?! The Millionaires on the board at Hyde’s have decided to increase the price of wines, spirits and Lager, the Moretti for example has gone up by 55p a pint taking it to £4.50 a pint. It’s gone from being one of the more reasonably priced pubs in the village to being one of the most expensive. It’s a lot quieter than it used to be, could this be why? Prices may have gone up because of Covid, but is that the fault of JW loyal customers? I liken the Hyde’s board to the Knights of the round table, taxing the poor in their price increase. Drop your prices, give the excellent Liz and her staff a helping hand and get this pub back at the top of the tree where it belongs.

We stopped at the James Watts as part of the Cheshire Real Ale trail and really liked it, so we got a bus from Stockport to pay it another visit. Very friendly welcome from the dark haired lady on the bar who was knowledgeable about the beers and helped with our choices. All the beers were well kept and there was a good range, supplemented by loads of additional cans and bottles. We decided a stomach lining snack was in order after a few drinks, so chose toasties which were freshly made (we know this as making one without cheese was no problem) and served with nicely dressed salad and a little bowl of tortilla chips. Had a chat with the other member of staff, a blond haired lady, who was equally friendly. Nice to see tables being wiped too. Shame we are 2 bus rides away from this excellent pub but we will definitely be back.

After living in Cheadle for 27 years, I'm pleased to say there is now a pub in the village that rivals anywhere else for great beer and friendly hospitality. The improvements from the transformation of the former Star Pub have been sustained by the Landlady et al staff, well done. However, when its hot there is no air movement in the pub, making it uncomfortable. The theme continues with the hand driers in the toilets, hardly any puff, so bring your absorbent jeans because that's what you'll dry your hands on. C'mon Hydes dig deep, this Pub and the great staff are packing the place out, so please fit some decent air con units, then I can stay in the James Watt longer !

I was just taking a wander round Cheadle and opted for a pint in this pub. I can't recall what it was called previously but hadn't been in here under it's current configuration. There was a good selection of six real ales and four draught lagers as well as well stocked chillers with bottled beers and ciders.Warm service and had a pleasant chat with another bloke about beer and 60/70's music as we were both of that era!The beer was excellent, a Wadworths American IPA. The pub was clean and airy no issues at all. I didn't look into availability of food as it was too early for me to eat. I'd certainly return here for a pint though.

I ran past this pub earlier this evening and thought i must try this whilst i'm here! The beer quality was fantastic. I was allowed to sample the beer and decided on a wandsworth Ale which was perfect. The gentleman that served me knew his beers and i ended up with a very decent ale. There appeared to be a band setting up for later so will have to come back and see what that looks like.

We live locally to this pub and go regularly on a Friday evening as it has a lovely atmosphere. Unfortunately this evening we were rudely turned away at the door and advised that they don’t allow people wearing tracksuits to enter. The barmaid said that no matter how nice or expensive the tracksuit bottoms partner was wearing were, it was a rule. Clearly we were both well dressed, on our way to dinner at a local restaurant but they seem to have recently introduced this ridiculous rule and we had to leave. We go there most weeks and are usually one of the more smartly dressed couples, even when wearing jeans (which don’t seem to be an issue) however they don’t seem to have grasped that fashion has moved on and are willing to lose custom over a very old fashioned view. I could understand it if this were an upmarket restaurant or if we looked remotely like trouble makers but introducing blanket ban rules like this seems very illogical. We didn’t argue with the girl who advised us, feeling very embarrassed about being shown out just as we’d arrived and we certainly won’t be going back to explain our point of view. We’re sad about it but the Royal Oak has just re-opened nearby and has a very similar atmosphere so we’ll take our custom and seemingly offensive fashion sense elsewhere.

I live in America now but I am from Cheadle. It’s been a while since I have been back to the village. This is a great (relatively new) addition to the high street. Went in solo before meeting a friend on the off chance I might get a good pint and I wasn’t disappointed. Choice of four on cask and a world of beers behind the bar. Literally. Barmaid was super friendly, atmosphere was relaxed, decor was fresh, seating well placed and the pints were tasty. They even have board games to play whilst you sup your pint. I’m told the food is pretty good too. I’ll be heading back in here when I’m back in Cheadle. Cheers James Watt.

This newly opened pub hosts plenty of real ale from the pump and bottles, as well as a good wine list. It replaces a pub that was well past it's sell-by and with its complete makeover, it is now a pleasant venue for a quiet drink away from the TVs of the other local pubs. They do serve snack type food as well if you're peckish and the staff are friendly and helpful; the only reason that I haven't given five stars is that it currently only has one till so this can cause a slight delay. I assume another will be fitted to remedy this soon as it hasn't been open long.
