Nice to see a Hydes upon my trails anyway… and the next pub down is one too! (The Crown Inn) — the male toilets need sorting though

This was our favourite pub and is absolutely the best Pub in Cheadle, however the toilets absolutely stink! You can now smell the toilets while sitting in the bar area. Such a shame, the management really need to do something about this, otherwise they are going to lose loyal customers like ourselves

Been going to the James Watts for a few years now, like it but I think they must have a problem with the Mens toilet,the smell is very bad and it’s awful sitting at the table near them, even the men going in said it smelt, needs fixing

A nice and friendly pub with great staff and a great choice of drinks, whenever im down in Cheadle , always pop in for a pint.

We called in recently as a very mixed and varied group, all of us found The James Watts to be super friendly, with great bar staff and a fantastic Landlady in Mel, a really good, warm pub that's very inclusive and well worth a visit

A lovely place with great beer and atmosphere, Mel and the team are fantastic. Would highly recommend!

Absolutely love this pub. Great well kept ales and very friendly staff all wrapped in a pub that looks really good. Dog friendly is also a bonus with a bowl of water always on offer and treats on the bar.

Great little place for a drink in the afternoon, me and my wife loved it and would come again, bit warm in there if I'm being picky,but outdoor smoking area is great and the staff are really quick and professional.

Low score as building work is underway and the whole place is a bit dark and depressing. No food offering at the moment. That plus the fact that the two customers in the bar were constantly effing and jeffing did not make for a pleasant lunchtime pint for me and my wife. Beer was ok. We headed for Cheadle Hulme and had a much more agreeable time on Mellor Road.

Lovely centrally located bar in Cheadle with nice, covered courtyard out back. Good choice of real ales too.

Like the place, both staff and customers are friendly enough though I'm not a big fan of Hydes ales. The location is great in the centr of Cheadle with a bus stop more or less outside. Plenty of eateries in the area means the James Watt is ideal for meeting before going on elsewhere.

Remember this pub as The Star in the past. It's had a superb makeover and is a very attractive, comfortable and welcoming pub. An excellent range of Hydes ales. Good to see a pub that hosts regular live music nights. Named after a former Lord Mayor of Manchester who at one time owned the nearby historic Abney Hall that hosted Prince Albert, Benjamin Disraeli, William Gladstone and Agatha Christie during It's heyday.

Nice local pub range of Hyde's ales. Not too busy or noisy.

Stopped by ordered two lattes,one tea. Came to a very reasonable £9.30. Bar staff cheerful and attentive. Would probably make this one of my locals if I stayed in Cheadle.

Excellent service and great beer

Great selection of draught beers and ciders. Wide selection of spirits, friendly pubs. Dogs allowed. Even have dog treats on the bar, a nice touch.

A delightful local pub in Cheadle. A good crowd of people and an easy place to feel comfortable and relax with friends, family or indeed by yourself.

A very nice birthday meal for two families, really tasty, good value and excellent service from Alissa. Really enjoyable and good music.

Such a nice pub! I had a pint of the L.S Lowry beer. Bartender Callum was super fun to chat with. Very friendly and knowledgable. The atmosphere was cozy and their selection of drinks was excellent. Will be returning for sure.

Good place to go for a drink and great drink

Easily the best real ale pub in the area. ( but Wobbly Stamp micro bar beats it on regular range turnover.) Since pandemic they concentrate on the whole range of Hydes beers. (Hydes, Beer Studio, Provenance, Ralf and Alf.) Friendly pub refurbished to a very good standard. Lovely staff.

Not very inviting, land lady is positively miserable and doesn't seem to care if you go back or not...not good enough.

Called in for a couple of drinks on our way round Cheadle, nice place and relaxed atmosphere.

Rude staff, had a young girl working there following us around all night accusing us of all sorts, not what you want really :/ also it’s shockingly expensive, was charged around £10 for one double vodka 😡 devastated won’t be returning

I’ve been visiting this pub since the old Star days, and it’s reinvention as the JW, Liz the former landlady did an exquisite job of transforming it to a staple pub for the Cheadle community for many years. Unfortunately the new owners don’t have the same drive or passion to keep this reputation. They seem happy to keep the custom of the lower class of society in their establishment. Which is a shame when compared to how the former landlady had transformed the pub into THE central pub of Cheadle. Avoid at all costs if you want a nice social drink - you may accosted by an angry local who has the protection of the staff. Such a shame.

I was having a quiet drink with friends when two men came to stand at the bar, glaring at us and making comments to one another. We ignored this until it became awkward and intimidating and I said "What's up?" The situation then escalated and voices were raised. The bar staff claimed that we had "both said things", rather than deal with the troublemakers. The person on the bar referred to one of them by name - clearly a regular, being pandered to. When I asked the bartender what we had said/done wrong, he just walked away. Later, one of the men shouted "inbred c**ts" at us across the pub. Quite rich given that he looked like Gollum. Again, the approach was to share the blame with our table. One of them then walked past our table muttering insults under his breath. Someone at our table said 'What was that?' At this point, someone (I've since learned that it may have been the landlady) jumped up and approached my friend, claiming that HE had started the trouble and at the same time, being rather friendly with the troublemaker. It was clear just by looking at our demeanor vs theirs, who was out looking for trouble. Had it been people younger than ourselves, this would've been quite a threatening experience. The staff sided with a couple of bullies because they know them. They knew exactly what was going on, but chose to pretend otherwise. In the end, we left because we it was made pretty clear to us who they would rather have in the pub. The anger that the (presumed) landlady showed to us was baffling. If this is the vibe the new management are going for then I'd recommend swerving it and walking down the road to the White Hart.

Excellent staff and service. Friendly atmosphere. Good selection of gins, and found my favourite rum Old J spice. Will definitely be returning.

Staff are lovely, great atmosphere, no TV’s so you have to talk to people its a perfect little pub!!

Lovely pub, well decorated for Christmas and lovely log burner to keep us warm. Staff were very attentive and quick service.

I was sat replying to a message on my phone when a drink slid off the table onto me… clearly the table was on a slight tilt as this happened more than once. The woman behind the bar came over and said “well it hasn’t happened before so it must be you”. As if sitting there with a pint soaked into your jeans isn’t bad enough…. Good beer but rude staff.

Lovely clean pub, sat outside in a lovely relaxed seating area with heater above us, staff very friendly and helpful, used glasses were removed from the tables quickly and then the table wiped down plenty of different beers to try. Would recommend a visit.

Love this pub. Years ago it was a really quiet old man bar you wouldn't look twice at. Now it's one of the best places to drink in cheadle. Stylish and relaxing with great decor, lovely staff and a chilled vibe not to mention a great selection of gin. It's a brilliant bar to meet friends and catch up and not that I'm a smoker but I have to say the smoking area is one of the best I've seen! It looks really inviting and not like an afterthought like so many of them do.

I'm lucky to have a bar/pub as good this at the local.

Very nice pub good atmosphere let dog's in didn't give 5stars because you have to wear a face mask Whist moving around. But that's not the pub's fault it's the daft government rules.

Cracking pub a good selection of beers in the centre of Cheadle. Just what the village needs

We went into The James Watts today as we've been here a few times and know they have a great selection of cask ales. We have always had ok service here but I wouldnt say outstanding however today with the new covid rules it was simply awful. We were greeted at the door and asked for track and trace and asked to use sanitizer which we did. We were sent to a table with a laminated A4 paper which had a drinks menu on one side and the other side said something along the lines of Please serve me, the man who greeted us said he would be with us shortly and to use the sign when we wanted to order. We put the sign in good view of the man and waited as he was clearly busy however he served at least two other tables who arrived after us. As we got annoyed at waiting we decided to leave and he said as we left thanks I said we didn't even get served a drink he completely ignored me and walked away!! At least the Crown further up the road had great service and are following the covid guidance perfectly!!

My husband and I visited the James Watt last night & despite not normally posting reviews I felt the need on this occasion to do so. We were extremely impressed by the young man (I've forgotten his name & do apologise!) who heads the team. He made us feel extremely welcome and secure in the knowledge that he & all the staff do their utmost to ensure all customers are looked after and feel safe whilst enjoying the atmosphere of a great pub!! Well done to him & all the staff, people do notice and we will be back very soon all your efforts are appreciated 👍 👏 😉

This is by far, the best pub for miles in any direction, the Landlady Liz, runs an excellent pub and keeps a great cellar. I have recommended this pub to countless people since it reinvented itself from being The Star, which was a complete dive. When this pub opened after the relaunch, nobody could believe how beautiful the place was, stunning interior with a great choice of well kept, reasonably priced beer. The pub went from strength to strength until Covid........ on reopening, suitable and appropriate measures were put in place and rightly enforced by the excellent staff. No issues, same great Landlady, surroundings and warm welcome. So what’s changed?! The Millionaires on the board at Hyde’s have decided to increase the price of wines, spirits and Lager, the Moretti for example has gone up by 55p a pint taking it to £4.50 a pint. It’s gone from being one of the more reasonably priced pubs in the village to being one of the most expensive. It’s a lot quieter than it used to be, could this be why? Prices may have gone up because of Covid, but is that the fault of JW loyal customers? I liken the Hyde’s board to the Knights of the round table, taxing the poor in their price increase. Drop your prices, give the excellent Liz and her staff a helping hand and get this pub back at the top of the tree where it belongs.

Good selection of beers, wines and spirits, knowledgeable staff. Excellent service with a smile and a good attitude towards not just the customers, but each other. A little background music, no gaming machines or television. This pub is a haven for those who yearn for a good chat over an even better drink, be it beer, wine or spirits. It reminds me of the pubs of a different era, good beer and excellent service.

A very pleasant evening. The atmosphere was fine and the layout of the tables was carefully thought out.

We stopped at the James Watts as part of the Cheshire Real Ale trail and really liked it, so we got a bus from Stockport to pay it another visit. Very friendly welcome from the dark haired lady on the bar who was knowledgeable about the beers and helped with our choices. All the beers were well kept and there was a good range, supplemented by loads of additional cans and bottles. We decided a stomach lining snack was in order after a few drinks, so chose toasties which were freshly made (we know this as making one without cheese was no problem) and served with nicely dressed salad and a little bowl of tortilla chips. Had a chat with the other member of staff, a blond haired lady, who was equally friendly. Nice to see tables being wiped too. Shame we are 2 bus rides away from this excellent pub but we will definitely be back.
