The Italian in High Peak

Begining experience was nice. Young lad took drink and food order. Wine and garlic bread with cheese arrived timely. Spinach and ricotta cannelloni was awful. Pasta was raw and I felt it had been microwaved. Partner had king prawn linguine, he found 2-3 long black hairs in his food. They took it away, returned a few mins later saying that had looked it over and would he like a new meal. Well yes, course. Same meal came back piping hot, My Partner cut one tail off a prawn before seeing the hairs, plate came back with one prawn missing a tail. Dish was tasty. Did leave hungry as couldn’t eat most of my cannelloni. Won’t be returning.

Yet another fantastic experience. The atmosphere, food, customer service all top class. We love this place and do so many of our friends and family. Knocks the socks off anywhere in Manchester. Always service with a smile, the young staff are just brilliant even when it can be so busy. If you haven’t been you must go. Whoever it is who posted the last review really needs to take a rest. Naming staff in such a way is also inappropriate. This place is brilliant keep up the good work 👌👌

In short, food were excellent. Service was appalling. No managerial or customer service skills. Poor dining experience on the whole. We won’t be returning and we do not recommend. Long review: I booked a table for 4 for my husband’s early 40th birthday as we had always enjoyed going to The Italian, especially for special occasions. The food had always been delicious and it had always been a lovely experience dining there. My husband, my parents and I went there this evening exactly for a special occasion. We booked a table for 7:45pm. Due to there being only 3, rather than 5 staff members serving, we had to wait an extra 55 minutes for our table to be ready. My parents arrived at 7:45pm. They were simply told that there would be a 10- to 15-minute wait. No apology was given. They were asked to order a drink while they waited. We arrived shortly after and we were also asked to order a drink. We weren’t offered anywhere to sit down because the place was so cramped. We stood awkwardly at the counter right in front of the front door. There was apparently an upstairs, but we were left standing there, as it would have been easier for the staff. We were told that with only 3 staff, it would simply have been impossible for them to run up and down and take care of everybody. So, standing in front of all the other diners it was. After a 25-minute wait, a table of 4 left. We assumed that we would have that table. However, there were another 4 people waiting for longer than we had. They stood up from the bar and took this table. We took their place at the bar because there were another couple of people who had joined us at the counter waiting for their reserved table to be ready. As we were sat at the bar and close to finishing our drinks, I suggested that we go somewhere else, but then thought that everywhere else in Glossop would have been full with it being a Friday night. Well, that was why we had booked a table at The Italian in the first place! The server, Jess (?), might have gathered that we wanted to leave; she gave us each a menu and asked us to order our food so that when the table would be ready, we would not have long to wait. Well, we had already waited for close to an hour by then. Shortly after my husband and I had ordered our 2nd drinks – a large house white and a large Zinfandel blush, Jess told us that “none of these will appear on your bill”. After that, Mum ordered a cocktail, which we would have happily paid for, as she did so after Jess said that our drinks would have been comped. We were sat at the table at 8:40pm. Our dishes arrived pretty promptly and they were, as we remembered, delicious. We ordered desserts and were ready to leave at 10pm. Abi came and cleared our dessert plates and I asked for the bill. We waited for over 15 minutes and Abi did not return with the bill. A lady from another table had to go up to the counter to ask for their bill (again) and the male server promptly tended to their table. We then asked him for the bill, as Abi, at that time, had already forgotten all about us! He brought the bill over and we checked the bill carefully. My husband and my large glasses of wine, and my Mum’s cocktail were all on the bill. I told everyone at the table that perhaps only the drinks ordered in the first round were comped, even though Jess said that none of our drinks would appear on the bill after my husband and I ordered our glasses of wine. The male server realized that we were wondering about the drinks, fully aware of the ridiculous length of time we wasted waiting for our table to be ready, he went and checked with Jess. He came back and confirmed that only the first round of drinks were comped, and asked if that would be OK. Frankly speaking, we were disappointed but we felt uneasy about quibbling, as the male staff had already gone and double-checked with Jess, who offered us the free drinks in the first place. So, even if it wasn’t really OK, we weren’t comfortable making a scene about it. All in all, the quality of food was excellent and all of our dishes were delicious. However, the service we received and the overall experience we had this evening was appalling. It’s not difficult to find somewhere with good food and good service. What we experienced this evening was stressful and it was such a letdown. We do understand that sometimes staff calls in sick at the last minute and restaurants are short-staffed. However, we thought it would have been courteous for the customers to be informed ahead of time when the wait would have been an extra hour instead of 10 minutes. In addition, being charged for drinks that we were told would be comped was like adding salt to the wound. The way the situation was dealt with left a great deal to be desired. If you don’t care about customer service or dining experience, the food is worth a visit. Otherwise, go elsewhere!

Ate here this evening for a friend's birthday, absolutely delicious. The staff were unobtrusive, but welcoming and helpful. Really good and will be returning. My steak was cooked to perfection and so good!

Tried the vegan menu and visited for the first time tonight. We were informed on arriving that our table would be a little late. The place was very busy, every chair was in use and the staff were all active. Despite being one of many customers we were still made to feel important. The vegan menu is good enough to want to visit again and to be honest my meal was good I would have it again. I went with the roasted aubergine dish and my wife had the vegan pizza. Both were spot on with portion size and quality. Staff aplogised for our small delay and we were given free drinks while waiting. I really felt like the customer service and quality of food were worth reviewing. We will be back for sure.

This restaurant is a hidden gem! It’s absolutely beautiful, we’ve been many times and never have i had a bad experience. The food is beautiful, the staff are absolutely lovely, bubbly and while attentive. The owners should be really proud of the restaurant and the atmosphere! Without doubt the best restaurant in glossop!

I like The Italian but my favourite Pizza the Calzone isn't on the menu and when I've asked you to make one in the past it was really poor. Otherwise the food we have had on every visit has been good.

We eat regularly in this restaurant but have only just got around to writing a review. This is in my opinion the nicest restaurant in the centre of Glossop. The food is very good and the staff are helpful , attentive and polite. The restaurant has a nice relaxed atmosphere too. It has an upstairs dining area as an overflow area but downstairs is the best place to eat if you can 🙂

Excellent food and service. 4 of us ate late Saturday afternoon, hard to choose between the cheaper set menu and the main menu, both delivered great food at a good price. Restaurant was quiet before the evening rush so it was a good time to eat.

The food is very good here and came within a reasonable time frame, particularly given how busy they were. The kitchen is clearly proficient. We were a large group and had placed our order in advance. The staff are young and very friendly. I offer the following suggestions, which are easy to implement and will dramatically improve the impression the customers receive: The veg should be served immediately before, or at the same time as the main course. No-one wants to watch as their sauce cools whilst awaiting an indeterminable time for potatoes and vegetables. It should be a simple matter to either bring the veg and the mains at the same time, or have the elected veg server arrive immediately prior to the main course being served. Cutlery for a given dish should be accounted for and laid out before the dish arrives. Whilst waiting for my spoon for my cheesecake to arrive I resorted to picking up a nearby knife, before a fellow diner handed me a fork, finally the spoons turned up en-masse. Two sets of cutlery were laid prior to service. Once the dessert requests are taken the very first job, after giving the order to the kitchen, should be to lay out the necessary cutlery and a further serviette. I would visit again. It's a good restaurant. The service just needs a little polish.

It was my daughters birthday meal, Ive never written a bad review ever, but im in total shock. This is possibly the smallest portion size ive ever been served! I even choose the most expensive portion size they had. Im a size 8 so Im not being greedy, absolutely ridiculous see the photo. I honestly left starving. The food was actually really tasty, but the amount they served was a complete joke.

Food was almost perfect only small point was the sauce served with black pudding, Mushroom and Fillet steak Rossini was the same The sauce certainly was not correct for the Fillet But the veg and desserts made up for it and excellent wine

My family has dined at The Italian about a dozen times in the past year or so and it never disappoints. It’s the one restaurant in Glossop that we keep going back to. I usually have the pepe chicken with roast potatoes and fresh veg. Or the fillet steak, which is equally tasty. Consistently high quality food served by hard-working, polite staff, no wonder it always looks busy!

Party of 4. Some pleased others not so. Sweets were a particular disappointment. Will try again though without guests and make different choices.

Very impressed! It was busy downstairs, so we were seated upstairs, which I preferred, as it was quieter and more spaced out. Staff were really friendly and accommodating (allowed us to change dark rum for spiced rum in a cocktail). The starter, main and dessert were all done to a high standard and tasted great. I'd definitely dine there again and have already been recommending it to friends and family!

Lovely to have another decent Italian restaurant in Glossop Good steaks

I thought that the service was brilliant, the staff were absolutely mint however I ordered 3 pizzas for my family and they turned up burnt which is such a shame as it’s such a lovely restaurant.

Had a lovely time at The Italian last night. Food was amazing, all four of us really enjoyed what we chose. The staff are so lovely and looked after us well. Went for my husbands birthday, they didn’t know but overheard us chatting and presented hubby with an ice cream sundae complete with candle sparkler and happy birthday tune playing. Such a lovely touch. Thank you, will be back soon!

So glad my son put me onto this place! Our table was booked for 7:30pm on Saturday evening, so we obviously expected it to be busy. Staff said we were being seated upstairs and asked if that was okay. In all fairness, it was quieter upstairs, with tables further apart, so that was already a bonus! We ordered cocktails while we chose starters and mains, and our servers were polite, friendly, and accommodating - offering a different rum in a cocktail, to replace one that we weren't keen on. Our food was spot on! Really tasty and of a decent portion size too. Even though we were starting to get pleasantly full, we couldn't resist dessert, as they sounded so tasty. Let's just say the proof was in the pudding! Highly recommended and we'll definitely be visiting again!

I wouldn't recommend for vegans and vegetarians, I'm afraid. The vegetarian pizza came with the vegetables that were basically raw. We paid much more due to a set menu without regard for the fact that we couldn't have a set meal as it wasn't created with vegetarians and vegans in mind. I understand that it may be busy on big holidays but this was not good enough.

Edit: a few years on and I just wanted to update from 4 to 5 stars. The staffing niggles have obviously been resolved and they’ve always given a constantly good experience in the dozen or so times that we’ve been back. We eat here regularly and the food is always really good 👍 Great food and staff are very friendly and accommodating. However we did find the service to be a little slow - if they can hire more staff, they'll be in a great place. I understand they're just getting started though, so I'm sure things will improve! 👍

03/03/23 - Although very busy the young waitresses fitted me and my girlfriend in. This is the first time I've been and can honestly say it was the best Italian food I've had at very reasonable prices. The staff were excellent and very friendly. Thoroughly recommend!!!! Chris Shaw

Great food, great atmosphere, great drinks and great staff.

Went today new years eve with my partner. The staff are all very friendly and welcoming. We had the garlic bread with cheese and meatballs for starters. Both were amazing and seasoned very well. For main i had the frisky fillet cooked medium rare and i can honestly say it was the beat steak i have ever eaten 11/10. Will definitely be coming back soon. Happy new year to all the staff.

A 100-mile round trip (voluntary designated 'taxi' for family and friends) Of the group, this was to be the first-time visit for two of them. We had booked a table for 19.15 and arrived with 5 minutes to spare. The place was full on both floors, and from what I am told, is like this most nights. We had to wait for quite a while due to some diners wanting to stay seated for a long time after their meals, which has a knock-on effect throughout the night. I'm saying this just to set the picture. During this time, it was plainly observed that the staff (both table and bar) were working flat out and yet remained extremely Professional and kept their attentiveness on the customer's order and needs. Hectic for them, but a joy to observe. It was also noticed that the tables did not have tablecloths. They would have been out of place, as the tables had a lovely marbled effect which merited showing off and not covered. After a short while, we were shown our table. Drinks: Coke ice and lemon, Vodka and ice, Peroni and Limoncello. Starter: Fishcakes Arancini Garlic Pizza Bread Calamari (Besides the calamari being the chunkiest I have had, there were 5-6 good-sized pieces and the 'batter' was lovely and firm - not crunchy as with some other restaurants. And whilst the others in the group enjoyed their starters, for this Calamari, I would come back again) Main: 2x Pollo Pepe with veg/chips (Done really nice, just the right amount of veg, for me. The peppercorn sauce was a tad thin, but that is a personal choice 2x Penne Salmon Clean plates were the order of the day and showed our satisfaction. Full praise to the floor and bar staff. Very efficient. And a big thank you to the Chef and kitchen staff for providing such a meal. The dining charge reflected the quality of the food as well as the service. The final bill was voluntarily adjusted, by the Management which was a very nice gesture and, unexpected as the wait for a table was not of their making. A return visit is most certainly 'on the cards'

Went here tonight for the 1st time. The food reallty tasty and great value for money. The staff were attentive without being in your face. Tha restaurant itself is really lovely and the atmosphere was great. It was very busy but the service was still very good. Will definitely be back.

Good traditional Italian cuisine. Perfect atmosphere for celebration meals. The staff were very efficient without pestering every 5 mins. I definitely will be returning in the very near future!

Fantastic meal Had the two course early bird menu. Garlic mushrooms for starters and lasagne for mains. The mushrooms were well seasoned and very tasty. Lasagne definitely the best I've had. Excellent service from all staff . We were celebrating a friend's birthday and she was given a complimentary ice-cream sundae with sparkler, a lovely thought. Great value for money i will return again soon.

Attended with visiting family who thank god ordered differently. To say this is the worst cannelloni I've ever had is an understatement. The meat was as dry as a bone, (what little there was). The pasta was virtually raw, and the whole think was swamped with chewy cheese. I've had better ready meal versions. I'm not fussy, and this is the first review I've ever placed, but it was so bad! The service was good, the place is nice enough, but to get a basic dish so badly wrong in an Italian restaurant is an insult to the great culinary traditions of Italy.

A joint starter of bruschetta- a simple dish but really well done- promising for what was to follow. We were not disappointed. Fish dishes perfectly cooked and great flavours, as were the meat dishes. The veg was , again , done well and a decent amount. This is a chef who knows their way. So to the but. The music was overloud and made conversation tricky at times. The service wasn’t great. It took a long long time between being delivered our drinks, and just taking our order. It took another very long time before the food arrived ( though in mitigation a busy night) and then a side order of veg missing. The young staff were willing and pleasant but need to be trained to be pro- active in checking their tables discretely. Trying to get attention wasn’t easy yet the staff were clustered around the bar area. Finally we heard someone complain the red wine was too warm, and indeed it was ( way over 20deg I reckon) and spoiled the wine. They need to find somewhere proper to store it.. Don’t get me wrong, this is a great neighbourhood restaurant - just could be even better.

We visit here relatively frequently and always have the most fantastic service and food. Can highly recommend. Whatever we order is always lovely. All the staff go out of their way to help and the drinks/cocktails are great. Great little place definitely worth a visit.

The best place to go for any celebration. The food and service are always amazing. If you want a relaxing no rushed evening which is what a lovely night out is all about this is the place to go. Food reasonable. But service diabolical. Only gmhad two courses, list the will to live to stat for a sweet. At least an ither 4 people walked out that I could see, without eating whatsoever. When I told the owner this was a special occasion and...

9 of us went for a special birthday meal. I have been to the Italian many times and found it excellent. This time the staff were very busy, it was difficult to get their attention. The food was OK but not up to the usual high standard. Maybe just a bad night for them.

absolutely beautiful. Honestly i love it here. The food, the people, the environment and the price! 10/10! If your stuck for somewhere to try, this will be your new favourite. I couldn’t recommend it anymore.

Found this little Italian in Glossop on the main road and even though it was late they managed to fit us in and we were so glad they did, the food was delicious and lots to choose from on the menu. The atmosphere was really nice as well. Will be coming back again next time I'm in the area

The Italian restored my faith in Cannelloni - I have had a number of mediocre ones in other restaurants lately but this was amazing. Other members of my party also enjoyed their food choices. It was a little quiet but it was a Tuesday night and people are cutting back. Enjoyable and reasonably priced.
