We live in the village and wandered in on a Friday night at 7.45pm for food. A few tables taken, but didn’t see anyone actually eating. Lots of free tables. We asked for a table for dinner for 3 people and were told that they couldn’t take anymore walk-ins. Not sure what the chef was doing if they couldn’t serve 3 people on a Friday night. Went to the Sheaf for a drink and peanuts.

So disappointed. Expensive and we knew we were getting smallest room, which was still expensive for the conditionand size. Shower runs hot and cold. Beds comfortable and pillows nice. Wasn't expecting to come down for breakfast to find it locked up. Had to track the chef down, to find out he was the only person who had bothered to turn up. Admitted breakfast should have started at 08:30. Got us into the bar for us to find water coming through the ceiling and a pool of water on the floor. Chef went to call someone and did everything he could (which sadly didn't involve a cup of coffee). Let us know that there would be someone arriving in 15 minutes. No "Wet floor" warning sign out for the ever increasing leak. We were here for 2 nights. One couple had to leave without breakfast as they had a wedding to get to, hair appointment etc. Total mess. Rooms are full and people ready to start their day, but not able to do so. 1 hour late General Manager turned up. Still no Wet Floor sign.

I would have eaten there but we are vegetarians and to see a whole glass fronted fridge with meat in the main bar for all to see was just too much. Yes its good to show and even sell local produce but not in a prominent position and vegans and vegetarians would be put off as we were so we didn’t stay

Maybe I was unlucky as my friends did enjoy their meat meals. Starter was good. Vegetarian risotto was tasteless with scant feta and tomato. Overpriced for a vegetarian meal and lack of choice. Brownie wasn’t up to scratch.

We arrived on a Wednesday lunchtime, without a booking. We had intended to have some food and to book a table for a large family gathering in March. There was only one person serving. The place was about 1/3 full. We were asked very gruffly what we wanted and told equally gruffly that ‘no booking, no food’ Whilst I completely understand that it might not have been possible to serve us, the rudeness of the man was appalling. One of the most unfriendly greetings I’ve come across. A polite’ I’m so sorry, if you’ve not booked we won’t be able to offer food, but maybe you’d like something to drink’ would have been so much better. Needless to say, we did not book for the family (there would have been 15 of us) There are numerous places in the locality where we can be assured of a less frosty greeting.

So we ate and stayed here visiting some friends who live in the area, have been a few times before and whilst it's a pleasant experience it seems to be getting a little expensive, bad points was that it was very cold and they didn't put the heating on all evening although there was an open fire but we couldn't get near it, no TV license either so no World Cup football, shower in room was above the bath and hard to keep water off the floor and the wonky room was quite quirky, food was all ok, we all had 3 courses and it was all pleasant, squid, scallops, pig cheeks, beef bourguignon, cheese boards etc the best part of the evening was the service, the young lady was amazing and couldn't do enough all evening and the two gents were busy and attentive, as mentioned it was a pleasant stay all round.

Several months ago, I stayed overnight when on a business trip to Hampshire. I tend not to stay in corporate hotels, preffering to stay in nice pubs with rooms. I was not disappointed. This weekend I choose to stay again, this time with my wife for the weekend to explore the local area and have dinner with friends who live locally. What a treat !!. We had dinner bed and breakfast on Friday and Saturday. Lovely welcoming, attentive staff. Nothing was too much trouble. The room was very clean, comfortable and warm. The food was absolutely delicious. I travel extensively in the UK. This is the first time I have ever written a review!! But felt compelled to do so. Great pub. Great team.

I went for a drink at my local and met my friend Matt, the leaseholder who told me he had a chicken pie coming and I needed to share it as he’d had a complaint which he couldn’t believe to be true. The delicious-looking pie turned up, superb pastry, lovely big chunks of chicken and plenty of filling. I asked Matt what the complaint had been and he told me that it was that the gravy was too thin. The gravy looked fine but I tried the pie and frankly, everything about it was exceptional, especially the gravy!!! The gravy was a proper chicken-rich reduction, not the normal corn-flour rubbish one so often is forced to eat. Some people are ungrateful and rude and seem to go out just in order to complain. This was excellent quality food.

We rented a cottage in Cranborne and family and friends came to visit. I decide to book a table for 10, however I was concerned that this establishment would not be able to cope. How right I was! First, we were advised the private dining room would cost 25 pounds, even though we had not requested the room. The the manager stated, OK you don't have to pay. Our order was: 2 T-bone steaks (medium), 3 burgers, one with no bun, a ceasar salad, 1 fish n chips, 1 chicken pie and 2 childrens meals. I decided to purchase a 58 pound bottle of Pinot. Out of stock! Chose another, out of stock. After several attempts, I chose the house wine. One steak was very, very well done and the other undecooked. Although the brioche buns were black, they were burnt! The cesaer salad consisted of a coulpe of leaves and a vast amount of croutons topped with battered chicken pieces. My friend remarked, " Well, I chose the chicken pie as you can't ruin that!" I complained about our meals and stated that the "chef" was out of his depth and lacked the skills to present edible meals to a large group; in that my steak was cooked in advance and kept warm and the other steak was served undercooked to ensure all served together. The response was, " the chef has never received complaints."

The food was very average, average at best and poor in the context of value. There was a large amount of white fat around the pork chops, which wasn't rendered down, they looked vile. The Turbot, or lack of it (I sent it back) was just poor. Mains were expensive before adding on the sides at £4 each and not really enough to share either. Those are high end prices in an average pub, where I would seriously contest the skills and credibility of the Chef. I would expect most people could cook the food better at home and serve it hot too. The potatoes and veg were cold, the veg wasn't much warmer after being re-heated. If you want spend this sort of money there are far better alternatives. Overpriced and under delivered. We won't be going back.

ABSOLUTELY AWFUL FOOD We have frequented this establishment on numerous occassions over several years and had always rated the place very highly, as they had consistently provided exceptionally prepared locally sourced food all be it at slightly higher than average prices. But it was always well worth paying a bit extra for the high standards and experience that they used to acheive. So when we returned for the first time this year we were not put off by the highly priced menu but decided to skip the starters and went straight in for the main course. After a wait of about 40 mins our meals eventually arrived. I had requested my steak medium rare and when it arrived it was barely warm on the outside and was cold inside, also it had been cut into stripes and spread out across the plate probably to appear as `Massive`as quoted on the menu. The chicken also arrived barely hot on the outside and was only tepid inside and proved difficult to separate from the bone. Once cutting deeper in the chicken was still pink on the bone showing it had not been cooked through correctly. We really should have complained but we were well into our meals befor we really noticed and made comments. .Prices were, Steak = £24.00 Chicken = £18.00 and both came without any potatoes or veggies, a side of Chips was £4.00 EXTRA for a very small ramekin consisting of 8 or 10 small chips !We are truely sorry to have lost another quality eatery in our area...WE WILL NOT BE GOING BACK .

When we spoke to someone , think it was the manager , she apologised but said ‘ oh that’s the kitchen’ as if this had happened before but clearly the problem hasn’t been addressed. Our meal was just ok, steak appeared to be cooked well but was tough to chew . The crab was presented with a lovely edible flower but no bread . I was hugely disappointed at the end of the meal to find there was no cheese offered on the menu, as we don’t usually have sweet desserts ,we asked and were told there was no chance of any cheese, despite there being a much celebrated four cheese pizza being offered. Hey ho ...sadly we went without .Our breakfast the next morning was promising , we both had eggs Benedict which was overcooked and bullet like. Service at both meals was very friendly though.Overall we were quite disappointed in our one night stay and wouldn’t recommend.

The food may have been nice this time after a previous terrible experience but I will never eat here again due the absolutely terrible service and rude staff.

Stayed 4 nights. Great location for Bournemouth,Poole and Swanage (within an hours drive) Room was superb and clean and is dog friendly, supplement charged for the dog which is fair enough. Dog friendly pub and food is excellent. Staff are very good and friendly. Breakfast menu is good and if you take your dog they get breakfast too. Off road parking is available and a garden is there to use. Overall a great stay, great staff, great food and dog friendly.

Starters were lovely and so were the sides. The main part of the meal however was full of fat which hadn't been cooked properly. At £52 for a piece of meat for 2 people (sides charged separately) you would expect the meat to be cooked properly. Feedback was given to the shift manager, who obviously has no management or people skills and she brought the Chef out (I use the term Chef loosely) to speak to us, he was obnoxious and had even less communication skills than the manager. The waitress who served us was the only person who made the effort to communicate effectively with us.They obviously didn't like the feedback and after spending £276 on a meal for 6 people (2 of whom had a very basic pizza) we were refused a final drink while we waited for our taxi and asked to leave so we had a 30 minute wait outside, with 2 children, for our taxi.If it's fine dining you're after this is not the place for you. Average food, greatly overpriced with below average staff who sat at a table in the corner sniggering like school kids.

Our first problem occurred when trying to find the inn - during COVID it has changed its name to Fleur De Lys but this was not on Booking.com or any of their in house literature. Slightly confusing. We checked in and booked for dinner. Nobody, customers or staff seemed to take any notice of the Covid guidance including the one way system which was pointless really because the exit door was locked when we checked out!!! Also there was no soap in the Gents. We had our meal outside - the squid was so over cooked it was inedible but the pizza was okay. Going back to our room it was so hot that the small fan provided was inadequate so I made the mistake of asking in the bar whether we could have another only to be told “Only 1 fan per room is allowed “ - when questioned this I was told the same thing and it was obvious that there was not to be any discussion! Having spent sleepless night we were woken by and angle grinder and a kango right beneath our room at 7.45am.The chair in our room was broken and the fan was covered in dust - didn’t notice this until the morning and to think that had been blowing over us all night.Breakfast was a joke - waited 20minutes before anyone took any notice of us. Eventually we ordered coffee and orange juice only to be told they had run out of the latter - for goodness sake, there is a shop 1 minute away. My husbands Full Breakfast was inedible and my scrambled eggs not much better. When it came to checking out we had been charged for the room which we had already paid for and the Eat Out to Help Out discount had not be applied for which we received a barley audible “Sorry “ and when raising the above issues there was a total lack of indifference and interest. When packing our car we spoke to another couple of people who also had had a lot of problems. It was such a shame as this was our first stay away since lockdown and what should have been a lovely quiet relaxing break away turned out to be the complete opposite..

The welcome was pleasant. Steep stairs to room, which was quite large. Designer toiletries were in the bathroom (could be purchased from bar in pub). The bed was comfortable and linen was clean. Only let down were the chairs in the room and the wardrobe. One chair was sagging on the seat where the webbing had given way meaning the seat sagged in the middle. The other chair in the room was the small bucket type, compact but usable. The wardrobe was a different matter, very old fashioned large wooden wardrobe with a door that the hinges squeaked loudly when opened. Unable to use it if partner was asleep. Suggestion for owner - get rid of wardrobe and put something else in place. get rid of both chairs and put a small sofa at the end of the bed and a stool under the desk. Room is plenty big enough to fit the sofa, would be more comfortable for guests. Also, a slightly larger television would be beneficial. However, when it comes to eating at the inn you cannot complain about any of it. Well cooked and presented with delicious flavour.

Hotel review as we didnt stay long enough for the food. We booked this Inn for three nights to celebrate our Golden wedding anniversary and visit friends nearby. These friends had been for a meal and said it was brilliant, so we booked. When I booked we had the choice of 'cosy' superior or luxury. Chose luxury for the occasion because we stay in good quality hotels and rooms. On arrival we were shown to our room by the lady who was running the bar. The room was freezing - although we were expected no one had turned on the radiators. The luxury room had one large bed with two basic bedside tables, an elderly wardrobe and a chair and a small, two drawer table with small mirror. It was dark as well as cold as bulbs missing in the ceiling lights. IMPORTANT no mobile phone reception there and no phones in bedrooms so there is no way to call out in emergency and no staff member stay in the inn overnight - so we are on our own in emergency with no way of calling for help. (Phonebox in village)! The room we were given was above the kitchen and there noise from the kitchen extractor and a smell of stale fat in the room (previously mentioned on Tripadvisor) The kettle - which we needed to clean - was in the wardrobe with coffee and tea - no biscuits - on a tray with legs, but one leg broken. There was no table area to place the tray so it had to stand on the floor. We had only book a few days before to pay at the inn - but the money for the three nights was taken from our account.

The Inn at Cranborne was transformed five years ago by owners Hall and Woodhouse, but the food and service did not live up to the quality of the building. We tried a few times and stopped going. A few months ago a new management team moved in. We heard good reports and last night four of us booked dinner there. A warm welcome, good service and a really excellent meal. My salt and pepper squid with harissa yoghurt was unusual and good. Two of us ate cod, beautifully cooked and served with a slight gratin on a bed of spinach with potato cakes. Good portions. Really good food. Well done and great to have a good local restaurant at last.

Very pleasant repeat visit - we have stayed twice before - in this pretty inn on the edge of Cranborne Chase. Well appointed room very good food and generally excellent ambience. Not that we have a dog, but very accommodating for those travelling/visiting with one.

Why have this on your menu its production is banned in this country. Ducks and geese force fed so their livers get bigger. Awful to have this on the menu and that is in basic terms

Stayed here last night to celebrate a friends birthday who lives in the village and we had a meal for 7 of us with breakfast in the morning. When we got here there was a power cut but staff dealt with it professionally keeping us up to date and finally when the power came on we had a 3 course meal which was lovely, squid for starters, steak for main and cheese board, all delicious, the room upstairs was spacious, if i had to be slightly critical I didn’t like the two single mattresses together for the bed or the shower attachment but apart from that all was good. Breakfast in the morning was also delightful with cooked local sourced food and great coffee and juice.

The four of us arrived at 6.30 pm as booked. Drinks were ordered and delivered ok. Then a large group of folk came in, and received immediate attention. We waited over an hour to order our meals, in the meantime, the large group ordered and were served their meals . I complained to the owner, who apologized , but said that the group had pre ordered their meals! Our order then arrived very promptly , but two hours after our arrival. The venue was noisy, and conversation very difficult. Won't be going on a Saturday evening again..big mistake. But the food was excellent to be honest.
