The Huntsman in Rugby

The front of house staff were very friendly and helpful but the chef wasn’t and in fact didn’t have a personality at all. He’s clearly not picked up on the friendly service that’s always been given to us by Adrian and some of the other chefs over the years. The beef was lovely but the roast potatoes were like bullets and inedible and the dinner wasn’t very warm. What a shame, as we’ve been dining here for years.

Worst carvery I’ve ever had . Family of ten , there was no space to move around , we was crammed in . Had to keep moving are chairs so people could go to the toilet. As for the food , cold and burnt . I wouldn’t recommend this place at all

Food excellent as always although would have liked more choice on starters and deserts. Staff lovely, helpful and friendly. Please please do something about the VERY sticky tables, I appreciate it’s the cleaning process reacting to the varnish but gives the customer an unpleasant experience.

Having recently moved back to the area after 20 years, we were amazed that the Huntsman was still going so thought we would take the family for lunch. Well talk about set in a time capsule! It was the same decor as it always has been so old fashioned. Although we went for the food, to me the decor/ambience is also very important. The tables have been varnished with a high gloss finish which feels very sticky literally our cutlery had to be pulled off the table to pick it up so that made it feel very dirty. The carpets have definitely seen better days. We spent over £200 I can certainly think of better places to eat with a more enjoyable atmosphere. The food was not bad but very reminiscent of a school dinner. We will not be returning!

Went here on Sunday with my parents and children and was thoroughly impressed. The decor is very traditional and transported me back to my favourite Sunday dinners at my Nans house. I had the prawn cocktail for starter and pavlova for dessert, both of which were delicious-fresh, homemade and flavoursome. The carvery itself was spectacular, the portion was huge and I even took my leftovers home. The staff were very pleasant and attentive. We will definitely be returning!

Old fashioned, dirty, food that looks like it’s come from a school canteen and to top it off rude staff… what more could I ask for. £35 for a carvery… I’ll stick to Toby carvery thanks.

Dirty restaurant and rude staff. I was spoken to by a blonde girl who seemed to be a supervisor- she was obnoxious and rude in tone. She was also seen to be bullying other members of staff through a rude tone and demanding and degrading comments. The food was poor with only two veg options and burnt roast potatoes. Felt incredibly rushed through the whole meal and overheard staff talking about how they needed to get us out fast- blonde girl kept saying she wanted to go home so get the customers out fast. Restaurant was dirty with sticky tables and grim carpet. Not a nice experience and this particular waitress/host lady was horrible in tone. Never coming back. Staff in general seemed to be lazy and very young- one girl however was fantastic- brown hair and glasses so a credit to the team very attentive! But apart from her had a bad time.

It was our first time visiting The Huntsman it was a lovely meal but we felt we were being rushed, we went for the later sitting and once we sat down our drinks order was taken then we were asked about starters but we hadn’t been given a menu as soon as the starters were finished we were told to go to the carvery then as soon as we were finished the main course we were asked for puddings we were given no time for a breather so I ended up taking it home.

Very disappointed with our experience here today. We had a 5 pm booking and although there was quite a few spare tables we were placed at a table that was squashed into a corner next to the disabled toilets and next to an extremely loud, large family that dominated the area around us making us quite uncomfortable. The starters were ok and the beef on the carvery very nice but the lack of choice in vegetables was very disappointing (carrots &cabbage being the only vegetables served). The Eton mess dessert was terrible consisting of a bowl of cream with one strawberry and one small meringue sat on top, not what I would call an Eton mess at all. All in all I would say not a very enjoyable experience and will definitely not be returning again

Valentine‘s dinner Saturday, the 10th of February. Meal was very very nice, but the service was not very good. Very poor !! and I have to ask for my change on top of the tables were very sticky.

Not been here for years but we were really looking forward to going for a Christmas family gathering, most of our party had to queue outside so our meal was held up. There was not enough bread rolls, our waiter said they had run out! The meat was beautiful but we were very disappointed with the lack of vegetables only cabbage and carrots. Desserts were lovely and nice choices. After our meal we like to stay for a chat & they came and opened the door to let in the cold air in to force us to leave. As we left there were big queues waiting to come in but when booking there was no mention of a time limit on our table. In all enjoyed it but definitely room for improvement & better customer service

Just been for our 3rd visit. We liked it before but tonight was even better. Great staff and service. Polite attentive and really made us feel welcome. Food was great as always and as meat lovers there was more than enough. It's definitely a place to visit time and time again.

The food here is amazing, what makes it so special is how passionate and proud the chef is. The meats are cooked low and slow so they fall apart when you eat them, and they are very generous with portions of meat - unlike most places. There is a small selection of veg, usually 2 options, but that’s plenty when you have so much meat. The chef will tell you all about the food and how it’s cooked, and will encourage you to go up for seconds if you’d like to - although we’ve never managed to do that! The food is delicious, you will leave the Huntsman absolutely stuffed :)

Food was good, but nothing to really write home about. The whole meal would have been much more enjoyable if the ‘supervisor’ hadn’t been so snotty and patronising. Unfortunately our meal out was ruined by us being treated like toddlers, and questioned on why we hadn’t finished our dinners. In addition, we were told any left overs were able to be taken home by another member of the team (Josh - who was lovely!), the supervisor came over to tell us we would need to pay £16.95 to take it home as we had been up to get seconds (as advised by other staff as it was the last sitting of the day) because this is what they charge for a takeaway roast. She even told us she felt like our ‘parent’. In the end she handed us a takeaway box and sarcastically said, ‘have it on me!’ Extremely awkward and uncomfortable meal after that point. When you’re spending nearly £200 on a roast for a table of 6, you don’t expect to be questioned on taking leftovers home. Surely they would not want to encourage waste. Baffling!! We won’t be returning.

The welcome and service was first class the carvery was old school perfection with the chef providing as much quality meat as you can eat, the veg was self service ( if you could fit it on your plate ) and delicious, and the sweets were to die for. Congratulations to the team for a fantastic evening

The food was amazing, the serving staff we very polite and helpful, the supervisor however was extremely rude and difficult. We were having a lovely evening until she interacted with the table, she was extremely rude and made us all feel very uncomfortable, we couldn’t get out of there quick enough. This ruined our whole experience and although the food was amazing we will not be returning.

Overpriced roast... 3 courses enforced (shocking), prawn cocktail starter had one prawn in it, desserts v bland, roasts don't even come with cauliflower cheese... get same/better with more choice and being allowed to choose how many courses (civilised experience) anywhere for much, much less... any decent place entices you to add course because they are tempting, not because they make more money... plus charged extra 5 quid for a Sunday dinner on a Sunday ... grim decor 40 years plus, no air or windows open so suffocating... the place screams greedy owners

Extraordinary food and service. Stay at least 12 hours without eat, to have "space" for all the food served.!! Good value for the money paid.

Although visiting due to having a voucher to use as gifted by a friend, visiting as a table of 6, we had heard good things about the huntsman before coming here. It's a deceivingly large place inside, with plenty of seating available. One caveat being that the restaurant is currently only open on Saturdays and Sundays, and does require pre-booking. We visited for it's renowned carvery and were not disappointed. All 6 of us had the 3 course meal, consisting of a varied selection of starters available, but the star of the show however was the main course. Upon finishing the starter, your table gets cleared, and led to the carvery area. A great selection of different meats (pork, beef and turkey), 3 different kinds of potatoes, vegetable options and all kinds of trimmings. The meat tenderness was out of this world, and all other parts of the dish were incredibly flavourful. Service was great throughout, and leading onto the final dessert course, pretty much all of us just about managed to complete it! A sign of a good meal. Would highly recommend to anyone in the area, or who happens to be passing by. If you've ever had another carvery and thought that was good, wait until you try this!

Came here again has the last time must have been over 10 years ago. So glad we did as food as good as I remember large portions and friendly staff this has to be one of the best carvery’s in the Uk well worth the drive to(2 hours)

Fabulous Carvery. Best around. Enough meat per plate to serve four.. Absolutely mouth watering tender meat. Friendly hospitality. We were served by Alana and Steph who looked after us very well. Also Lewis who greeted us was very welcoming and chatty on exit. A very friendly team. You wouldn’t be disappointed. May sound a little expensive but worth every penny.

Quite a quaint venue full of odd unexpected nooks and corners - very friendly and welcoming. The offer is a fixed price three course meal with carvery main; for a cost that is fair for three courses. Starters and desserts are quite varied so provide good choices. The choices we had were excellent. The carvery offers a range of meats liberally served although some carvery fans might find the vegetable offer a bit disappointing. A mix of peas and mushrooms seems rather odd. But overall a very pleasant time.

The Huntsman never lets you down. When I try to explain it to my workmates in Birmingham, they think the price is a lot for a carvery. I get that opinion it does cost more than chain carveries. That's the thing. This isn't a chsin carvery. It's a quality restaurant that happens to serve carvery food, and a great deal of pride is clearly taken in the preparation of the food. For (what at June 2023 was) 29.95 per head you get three courses of food. Which compares favourably to other quality restaurants in the area. In terms of sheer gluttony you're welcome to go back up for more carvery. Unlike any other carvery I have been to, seconds includes the meat, not just the veg. The portions are generous to begin with the meat served fully covering the surface of a large dinner plate. The meat options (gererally beef, turkey and either gammon or pork) are clearly of wonderful quality and slow roasted to an exceptional standard. The best restaurant Yorkshire puddings I've ever had, home-made sausages and crackling all compliment the meal perfectly. If many places were offering meat this good the veg might be something of an afterthought. Not here. The veg was all seasoned to perfection. On my visit there was mash, roast potatoes, carrots and cabbage. Every sauce you could wish for was available, although I had a bit of each meat I wanted horseradish for my beef - even that seemed homemade. Stuffing and a delicious gravy were of course on hand. We had my disabled Mum with our party and a member of staff queued in her place while my Dad directed what she'd have on her plate which was a much appreciated touch. The food is always incredible here, the staff are brilliant too. This visit was no exception. The Huntsman is a long-held family favourite amongst all generations of our family.

Haven’t been here for a few years, but after today we’ll be back very soon. Food was better than I remember, but the service made it for me. My son is in a large powered wheelchair, the staff were so accommodating, my son couldn’t fit under our table due to the positioning of the table legs, the table was changed with minimum fuss. My son was made to feel very welcome and all his needs were met with a smile, it’s so good to find a restaurant that is so welcoming to people in wheelchairs.

CHECK YOUR RECEIPT - overcharged £175 as added extra adults and charged the kids as adults. Booked a large group and we’re out across 2 tables - could have gave my large group a better spot. Completely unsocial setting. Food was huge disappointment - was told after that had to ask for vegetarian option. Veg was horrendous - only green veg was Brussels! No peas, green beans, broccoli, cabbage ect. Stephanie stepped in and saved us being overcharged. Disappointing, stressful and horrible experience. We won’t ever return.

Everything was delicious. The bread & butter at the start, the gammon, beef was so tender, the gravy, mash was perfect, sausages, stuffing was lovely texture, peas were tasty with bacon bits, carrots, crackling too. Pudding was yummy I had the peanut butter brownie!

Heard really good reviews. Made a booking, and was kept waiting over 1/2 hr. Nearly left, wish we had. Food did not seem fresh. Roast potatoes looked and tasted old. Chillie started was just mince in gravy. THe portions were very big!! But the quality very ppor. The beef was tastle and chewy and gammon salty. No-one checked to see if it was ok or if we needed anything. I had to call a waiter over for service for drinks. They returned with drinks promptly. Placed them on the table out of reach, without saying a work and didn't even check which drink was for who and place them to the appropriate person. Will never visit here again and would definately not recommend, I can't beleive you have such good reviews on the website, when food and service was poor and over priced. Had better at a Toby Inn for a fraction of the price!!

We have been so many times over the last 36 years and it has never failed to please.The covid crisis means that your plate has to be served up rather than you going to the carver, which does take something away from the experience and selection for me. However the food is as good as ever and the service excellent.

Fantastic The Huntsman is open for business (although limited with the Covid crisis). Took a friend there for a meal as I'd told him how fantastic it was. HE had to agree! As always good food, good staff and a great atmosphere. Head cook Nicky made sure everyone was well fed. `I didn't realise just how much I'd missed going. It's worth ringing on the off chance of a table being free and if there isn't one then there is always the take away option too. Well done.

Had a wonderful meal out with my daughter. Had the sunday roast. It was well organised and tables and seating well spaced out. Always visit here when I’m back in the village. The Huntsman has adapted brilliantly to the crisis and does superb roasts for take out. Safe and efficient system for pick up. They should put a statue of the great chef Adrian up in the village: he’s a Dunchurch legend! Greatest living Englishman!

Out of the blue we decided to try the legendary Huntsman in Dunchurch’s ‘takeaway’ carvery. Well we were a little reticent on how it would be served - would it be a pile of ‘mush’ in a polystyrene tray?! Suffice to say it was absolutely excellent and surprisingly not a pale imitation of their famous sit down carvery. It was extremely well packaged with separate trays for vegetables, gravy and meat and the the portion size was very generous. My wife actually proclaimed that it was the best ‘takeaway’ she had ever eaten and I probably would have to agree. Yes, £29.90 may seem pretty steep for a one course takeaway for two, but think of it this way; you would happily pay £15 per person for one course sitting in a pub probably eating pretty standard inferior fodder and then be obliged to buy a drink or two. So £29.90 for two excellent takeaway main courses of restaurant standard is actually really good value in my eyes and i would recommend anyone to order one immediately.

So we decided to have The Huntsman for dinner because everyone says it is absolutely the best food ever. It isn't. Whilst it was nice, there are problems. 1. The amount of meat you get in the full house was minimal. The ham was delicious, as was the turkey, but the beef was tasteless and the portion was tiny, and the sausage was nice but very small and a bit mushy. 2. The roast potatoes are school dinner roast potatoes. No crisp whatsoever. Not bad tasting, but not what you expect of a roast potato. And they weren't this way just because it was a takeaway, it's just the way they are cooked. 3. The stuffing was very wet and tastes just like paxo. Was it terrible..no, it was just really wet. 4. The carrots and peas were really good!5. I enjoyed the mash, husband thought it was meh.. 6. The gravy was ok, didn't stand out but it wasn't bad. 7. The bread sauce is amazing.8. The Yorkshire was underwhelming.All in all, we enjoyed it but it definitely isn't 5 stars, not even close. It is very expensive for what it is and there are other carveries for a fraction of the price that are just as good. Would we try it again, yes. On a cold day one day, but no time soon.

Just been to the huntsman for the carvery absolutely wonderful meal plenty of meat and veg was absolutely stuffed . Unfortunately due to corona virus they have been forced to close the restaurant but they will be opening as a takeaway so please support them to get through this difficult time

As always, The Huntsman did not disappoint. We were a table of 9 & we were looked after very well. Food was just as delicious as ever - best carvery & well worth the 30 minute drive from home to get there.

To say that we had a great meal at The Huntsman Carvery would be an understatement. We had been looking for a venue to celebrate a family birthday at short notice and decided to try The Huntsman as we knew it has a good reputation for its carvery and especially its meat.With a vegetarian in our group we wanted to ensure that they would be looked after as well as the carnivores.The meal was amazing and everybody in the group (19 years to 84 years old) thoroughly enjoyed their meals. A few of us ordered starters, which were delicious if not necessary due to the all you can eat carvery. There was a choice of turkey, beef and pork, all of which were beautifully cooked. The yorkshire puddings were perfect and there was a good selection of veg including mash potatoes and roasties cooked in beef fat and wonderfully crunchy. The meat gravy was also delicious. Our vegetarian was provided with their own veggie gravy and roasties and the yorkies were also veggie.Several of us made a return trip to the carvery to have a little more meat!!To be honest, the carvery meal was enough on it's own and I was glad I didn't have a starter and certainly had no room for a pudding. The puddings that were ordered were delicious and the cherry panacotta was a real star.The chef at the carvery took time to explain the background of each of the joints, how they were prepared and was also very generous with his portions.Overall we were very impressed with our evening and will definitely be going back again.

This carvery is second to none, absolutely superb roast meats and accompanying vegetables, unbelievable smooth mash potatoes and an abundance of excellent gravy. Put all this with a great selection of starters and desserts and what's not to like.The staff are always helpful polite and efficient.I wouldn't go anywhere else for a traditional carvery.

Had a family birthday meal here on Sunday although it was extremely busy the food was excellent & fresh meat & vegetables we’re coming out continually.We ate far too much so much so we couldn’t manage the dessert but it was no problem as they put them into containers for us to bring back home with us .Would highly recommend it if you love a roast dinner !

Visited for Sunday lunch. It would appear the restaurant offers a 2 seating arrangement 12 and 2.30. We were offered a cramped table for two that would have involved disturbing the table of 4 next to us to have got up and moved to enable us to be seated and then had to disturb them again to go to the carvery and then back. We moved to an alternative table. The table was dirty and I had to ask for the table to be cleaned. We ordered drinks these took over 10 minutes to arrive. The wine glasses were dirty and I had to wait for these to be changed. We had arrived early but at 2.30 the reception area was full of guests waiting to be seated and queuing outside the door. The door was open which made the restaurant cold. Then a few members of staff were trying to service a full restaurant of guests. The queue for the carvery was then huge and not managed. When seated I asked for another drink this took over 10 minutes to arrive. The food is amazing hot and top quality meats and veg with generous servings. You cannot fault the food however there is nothing enjoyable about the restaurant it was a stressful experience. Would not return or recommend totally due to poor management and service.

We've been coming here for ages. I've never been disappointed, and even when we have people in our party with allergies, they'll always make sure we're sorted out and can eat. Wonderful place, fantastic food, great staff. Can't suggest this place enough.

my partner and i visited here on 15 February and got the window seat, the food was fantastic and the fact you could go up for more meat if you wanted to was great.Fantastic value for money and will return again.Our server was cacci or kacci (couldn't remember how it was spelt), so i do apologise, but she was lovely, great service

This carvery ticks all the boxes. We had the 3 course carvery for 25.95 and thought it was good value. Superb hand carved meats. Gammon, Turkey and beef. Yorkshire puds, home made sausages and help yourself to veg. Friendly and fast service too

A great Christmas meal with friends. We pre-booked a three course meal at the Huntsman for lunchtime. The table was ready fir us on arrival and we received a very friendly greeting on arrival. The staff were friendly throughout our stay and were really helpful. Starters were served, warm crusty bread was available, and we went to the carvery for our main course. All the meats and vegetables were freshly prepared, hot and the food was delicious. The desserts were really hard to choose between as they all looked so good and great tasting. Would certainly return.

Me and my wife, Son and Daughter-in-law booked a table for Sunday Lunch this Feb. The carvery was pretty average in my opinion. Meat was plentiful and well cooked. the veg. however left a lot to be desired. Limited choice and MUSHROOMS in the PEAS!!!!!!! No carrots or Greens. I love mushrooms but do not think they belong in a SUNDAY LUNCH. We were seated at a very cramped table, close to the kitchen, and even closer to the table next to us. So much so I thought We were a party of six. The restaurant was extremely hot, possibly caused by being so close to the kitchen. The value was, in my opinion, not very good at all. I would rate it as value at £9.99 for the carvery but it was in fact £16.99. Service was adequate at best.

Very generous portions, good choice of vegetables, everything cooked to perfection, we all had a great time. We came here in 2018 for our office Xmas dinner as well and will very probably come again this year. Staff all very friendly and helpful.

Excellent food quality roast meats really mouthwatering lovely hot assorted vegetables starters and sweets also very good. Nice surrounding's friendly staff what more can you ask well worth a visit can highly recommend. Will come again well done to all.

We stopped by on our way to the St Cross Hospital. Purely by chance, we were in time for the first sitting of Sunday lunch. It was fabulous and great value for a three course meal. Friendly old-style service- and very helpful. When my son wanted something for pudding that wasn’t exactly on the menu, they were more than willing to create it for him! We had a child and an older person with us - something for everyone!

Good well-cooked carvery food. Nice selection of starters and puddings. Staff didn't seem to be particularly well-trained but were friendly and coped well. Good sized portions, especially for the main course. They were happy for us to take the puddings away to eat later.

the value for money is incredible, large servings. The meat is tender and faultless, my favourite place for a carvery.

An excellent meal as usual but spoilt by the terrible service on this occassion!
