The Horse in Teignbridge

What a gem of a pub- we were visiting Moretonhampstead and needed some lunch and happened on The Horse. The lovely landlady was quick and efficient with our drinks - beer for the boys and coffee for me, and then with our food order. We only had an hour's parking, but our stone baked pizzas and omelette arrived super quickly and were absolutely delicious. Clean and comfy loos too! Would definitely recommend - wish we lived closer.

Glorious location, Good food and beverages

We do not eat a lot of pizza but have to say the pizza here is excellent. We all (X4) had a different choice and everyone was more than impressed. The premises are well presented and lovely and clean and the staff are helpful and friendly. If you are visiting Dartmoor and fancy a pizza you should really give this place a go.

Sensational ! Perfect food, atmosphere and service. Wide variety of options for all tastes and expenses. Nice, quiet and great place to have dinner or relax in the pub.

As The Horse had put on a brilliant birthday party meal (25 people, sat down) for me, late last year, I chose the venue again for this buffet style event for a much larger party. Marlene and the staff were excellent in every respect, from the planning a liitle over two weeks beforehand, to when we arrived mid-afternoon, to when the last of us left, late in the evening. Nothing was too much trouble, food/drink superbly set out, helpful advice given regarding amount/composition of food/drink, wonderful and efficient manner of the staff, quality of the food and presentation........overall, a faultless display of catering for a large number of people over a lengthy period of time and at a reasonable price. As a couple, all the way through to larger groups, I have dined here and brought friends for drinks here, and would thoroughly recommend The Horse as a 'destination' to visit if you are anywhere in this part of Devon or to come to if you live here. The food is second to none and the staff's helpfulness is unmatched. Five stars all round!

I had the meatball 'bada bing' calzonne. It was fine, but didn't quite live up to the hype of "...the best pizza this side of Rome". Portions were generous, and the food was nicely presented. Perfectly reasonable dinner, but I have had better. Service was perfectly pleasant, just not the fastest, given the place wasn't full.

We had gone to The Horse for a friends birthday, we were a large group but were given a single table in one of the numerous rooms. The evening went really well with excellent food, we had started with a large shared plate of cut meats and cheese and I followed this by the mussels and chips. All the food was excellent. The pub is very good and can be recommended for large and small groups.

We’re local people and eat regularly at The Horse but I’ve never written a review. Last week we had dinner with some elderly friends who were visiting and the evening was just perfect. The food (from pizza to steak) was top notch, the service warm and welcoming and they dealt brilliantly with our coeliac friend. Oh… and the desserts were really delicious! We’re very lucky to have this on our doorstep.

I have been hiking/walking all over the Dartmoor area, trying many pizzas as I go, and was disappointed every time until today. I had a cheese-less mushroom pizza, and as a Chicagoan that tries pizza everywhere I go, I can honestly say this was one of the best I’ve ever eaten anywhere. The crust was handmade, cracker-thin in the middle, flaky and bubbly at the edge. Sauce was thin and sweet and mildly flavored, total perfection. Was worth the 10 mile walk to get here and I’d do it again happily any day, sad to be leaving tomorrow and can’t come back for another one before I go!

A restaurant we would love to somehow bring to our home town. It would rival some of our big city Italian restaurants. Excellent menu, excellent presentation, excellent meals.

so good we went back twice in our week long stay. This feels like still a pub for locals to congregate at the bar as well as plenty of dining space for, well diners. We ordered both times a salad as a main and shared a pizza, both evenings the pizza was absolutely mouth watering and the salads were fresh and innovative and super tasty. I didn't see a Negroni but asked for one both nights and was blessed with very well made cocktails both evenings. We just loved it here - great mix of local chat and happy people eating lovely food. Shout out to the pub dog - Finlay? - we wanted to take him home with us. Thank you and hope we can return.

We had such a great evening ...relaxed , lovely food , friendly and helpful staff . A proper local pub , no piped music , just the gentle hum of quiet conversation . Please don't change your USP ....it is a complete joy to find somewhere so authentic and consistently excellent. Well done !

The best pizza ever! The bases are fantastic and the topping selections delicious and varied. All of the produce used here is also of excellent quality. A great little find. My only criticism would be that the ambience in the restaurant area at the back is a little lacking. But thoroughly recommend

One of the best pizzas I've ever had, one of the worst desserts. Lovely environment, Eastern pizza was lovely on a light, crisp base. Ice cream was a bit of an insult and not cheap.

Enjoyed a fantastic “Don” Pizza and my wife’s Moule Frite were stunning! A pub in a quiet Devon village on a wet Saturday night that’s absolutely heaving when the surrounding restaurants are virtually empty says everything about The Horse.

When you walk in, it appears to be a pub. Then you sit at the table and begin reading the menu, only to discover that they mostly serve pizza. The waiter was adequate, pleasant but untrained. In general, the service is slow and inattentive. The kitchen is just around the corner, and you can hear the cooks conversing and whistling. The pizza is then delivered. At first glance, it appears to be a good pizza romana, which is typically thin and crunchy. Unfortunately, the pizzaiolo's cooking skills are also very poor. The pizza has been overcooked, with some tomato and mozzarella clearly burnt. The side quickly becomes dry and hard. The concept is sound, but the execution falls short. It is not recommended for Italians or pizza experts.

Top shelf in all respects. Full stop.

Recommended and featured in the Alastair Sawday pub guide and Trencherman's for food including signature pizzas. A doggy friendly locals' pub. Log burner and comfy. Lofty dining room at the back. Courtyard garden. Well kept real ales on pump. Just the gent's is worth a visit, for the antique urinal, saved apparently from the Adelphi Hotel in Liverpool. 🇬🇧🇳🇿

Cracking beer, nice staff and decided last minute to eat. The steak pasta was amazing so I’m coming back tomorrow. It’s quite big inside so I think they can accommodate more people but that hasn’t diluted the quality. I’ve seen the pizzas fly past too and they look really good

Moreton Hampstead has a few decent places to eat considering it's a small place. This is one of the best if you like good Pizza and pasta. It would have been nice with more choice on the pasta side only no regrets as what they had was very good.

The Horse is usually brilliant, but now it's just another pub with tinny muzak and ruined by a sports screen in the bar. The beer wasn't very good either. What a great shame.

We cannot recommend this place enough! The staff were amazing! As we arrived at the place we realised that we had a puncture in our car. We needed to phone the recovery service and we didn’t have our phones available to phone. They offered their phones, they even offered to take us back to the hotel. Amazing hospitality from everyone!!! And on top the food was AMAZING!!!we have never tried these pizzas. We come from London where you have a great variety of foods available but this was superb!!!

The food was very lovely but it was a shame to hear the female chef swearing and speaking rudely to the waitress.

We had pizza and sirloin steak, both were very good. Our Waitress could have been a little happier (perhaps she was new) but the waiter and manageress were friendly.

The food served here is top notch and I would recommend the chicken meatball pasta dish over the pizza (which I also tried on another occasion). The other dishes aside from the promoted pizza are excellent in flavour. Unsure why pizza is promoted so much on the menu when Berto’s next door is better for pizza. Mix of friendly and not so friendly staff. Go for the other stuff on the menu, it really is fantastic!
