Really charming pizzeria with great food, friendly staff and very reasonable prices. Definitely worth a visit.

Scrumptious and good atmosphere.

Just perfect, everything we were looking for. Fantastic pizza and amazing tiramisu. Great atmosphere, friendly ched/owner and assistant waiter (on Friday evening) a cozy comfortable place to eat and chat with friends. House wine was exactly what we wanted too. I loved it, the best eating experience I have had in ages.

We had pizza and antipasto as a takeaway. Really quick service and the food was incredible.

One of the most beautiful and delicately curated places to eat Italian dishes. Berto is not only a warm host and great cook, he is also a wood artist. The entire restaurant has been created with his hands. It's a museum. The dishes are exquisite, the pasta fresh, just right, and enjoyable with a good wine, beer or water. Safety pin. Of my trip, it was one of the most endearing moments. Thank you!

Thank you for a good evening. Food was very good. Pizza mafia was not as spicy as I thought it was going to be but still did not disappoint. The ice cream I had a funny aftertaste like if it had something in it to keep the ice cream smooth. Table was quite sticky but not a big deal It was very warm upstairs and very busy and was being bumped from behind by people walking past. I feel they should remove a couple of tables to create more space upstairs. Following our last review of the 14 October 2022 we simply had to return, the cost of B and B in the White Hart Inn well worth the effort. Afterall, Berto's is a BYO, as rare as hen's teeth in the UK! Reserve a table in the main street level area for its atmosphere and for watching the open kitchen. A busy evening for dining and collecting takeaways. A perfect thin based pizza with a crispy edge. Whilst the lasagna didn't meet expectations, the cost graciously cancelled. A modest £5 corkage makes for excellent value. A cosy, rustic and dare I say proper, Italian restaurant. 🇬🇧🇳🇿

My wife and I visited Berto’s for the first time. It was her birthday and a Friday evening. We booked for 6:30PM. Arriving 5 minutes early the warmth and atmosphere, including the greeting, was welcoming. There were 2-3 tables for four empty at the time, the kitchen smelled great and it was looking like a good choice for something a little special. Unfortunately, that was the high point. We were escorted down a flight of stairs into an empty and cold basement that lacked the ambiance that was so plentiful upstairs. No one else was seated in the basement. We sat next to the space heater that was on maximum, but was barely heating the immediate area much less the whole room which had as many as 36 seats. The waitress was pleasant and patient as we looked over the choices. We were both disappointed with the seating and asked if it was possible to move upstairs. Our server came back with a certain “no, all the tables upstairs are for four.” but we were assured there would be more people coming. OK. We ordered drinks, caprese salad to share, lasagne and a vegetarian pizza. After an appropriate amount of time the caprese arrived, but no fresh basil. There are 3 ingredients in a caprese salad – tomato, mozzarella and BASIL. When we asked about the basil our server went to the kitchen and came back with “we have run out.” OK. The tomato and cheese salad, drizzled with olive oil and balsamic vinegar, was good, but really how does an Italian restaurant run out of basil at 7PM on a Friday evening? Could we have been told there was no basil when we ordered? The lasagna and pizza were delivered soon after we finished the starter, good timing. We asked for some hot chilli flakes to sprinkle on the pizza, but there were none. Chilli oil was offered, but really it’s very different to pour oil on your pizza vs. a sprinkle of dry chilli flakes. In all honesty the lasagna and the pizza were good. But by 7:45 we were still alone and cold in the basement. Skipping pudding, we went upstairs to the place we’d hoped to dine, only to see the same empty table (possibly 2) we saw when we arrived. When paying, we were asked about the meal. I had to be honest - the atmosphere in the basement was terrible and although the food was good a meal out is more than the food. The owner was quick to offer to comp the food (yes, thank you) and take-away tiramisu (no, thank you), when he overheard our disappointment. But I am not sure how you can allow 2 people to eat in a cold empty basement when you have open seats upstairs – we were told the seats were booked but the people were late or no shows. In my view the experience shows a shocking lack of hospitality.

Delicious pizza and pasta served in a lovely unique boho environment.

I like Berto's. It has a charm that is a strange hybrid of rustic Italy and backwater Devon. It sits well in Moretonhampstead and helps this little town punch above its weight. The service is good, casual but good. But the food could be better. It lacks passion. But then again this is Moretonhampstead, where passion isn't always thick on the ground. I go back regularly but I sometimes wonder why. It is very popular and receives 5 star reviews most of the time. I really hope (and suspect) it will survive Domino's opening in Bovey Tracey.

Excellent local Italian, super food, attentive, friendly and prompt (but not rushed) service. Pasta was perfectly cooked, slightly al dente and the arriabiata sauce was nicely fiery without overpowering the tomato and garlic. The pizza had a good thin, crispy base with plenty of quality toppings and cheese and was good value. Drinks were very reasonable and desert was delicious. Overall the bill was excellent value, the ambience was relaxed and friendly. Booking a table is a good idea as it looks like a busy and well supported place.

This is a cracking pizzeria! The pizzas are superb - from my experience they’d genuinely rival pizzas in Italy. The staff are friendly, accommodating, witty, and helpful. The background music is excellent and the decor is charmingly eclectic. Six stars!

Lovely date night at Bertos this monday. Our waitress was amazing. Excellent service and helped to recommend me the meat feast pizza which was INCREDIBLE. Will be coming back when in Moretenhampstead (what a gem it is).

What a gem of a place! Felt like we were right back in Italy again. The service is perfect, friendly and attentive without being too much, the atmosphere was great, laid back and cosy, nothing pretentious or gimmicky. The food was beautiful, truly authentic, we asked for a few extras to the meals and to make a smaller pizza for our young daughter which was no problem. Ask about the specials, they live up to their name! Very reasonably priced too. This place is on our new favourite's list and we'd definitely make a detour to come again.

Went for an early dinner at 6pm. Place was buzzing with several family groups. We ordered a vegetable lasagne and a seafood salad. The lasagne was small and garlic bread turned out to be a plain pizza. The salad was very disappointing and comprised large chunks of chewy octopus on lettuce with not much else. I complained but got “I will tell the chef” reply. Curious because the chef was standing right behind him!

The best restaurant in town. Very good Italian specialties are served. The owners are very friendly nice and helpful. We can only recommend this wonderful pizzeria. A must in this very pleasant city.

We went there with our two children for dinner because some friends recommend us the restaurant, as soon we arrive the service was very slow and we order very late even if the restaurant was not busy ,after we order i saw the arabic woman chef cooking our pizza and talking on the phone in the same time which is not hygienic at all... and when the pizza arrived it was missing toppings and was over cooked and dry . The old italian chef was tasting the food with his hand without washing after ,and also was using one towel to clean his sweating and that towel it was left all over the kitchen which is dramatically unhygienic . - Guys did you ever think you are cooking under the supervision of the customers who can obviously follow you to see how you cook their food!? -In the toilet they have only one towel for all customers which is not hygienic at all , in My way back from toilet i realised is smell very strong marijuana , and this was confirmed to me later because the old italian chef which is probably the owner was making a marijuana cigarette right in the front of the desk probably thinking that no one can see him, but it was very easy to realize that he was doing marijuana because of the very strong smell, while we were at the table next to the desk. Obviously this thing made us to have issues about the food preparation and we decided to leave as soon as possible but again we asked the bill and the waiter was very slow as usual! Please think about our children coming in this restaurant what they could see... Looking online this restaurant is got lots of wonderful reviews and i don't understand how ! All these together disgusted us and we will definitely not return or recommend this place. Perhaps a report to the authorities could help them stop .

This is a real gem of a place to eat❤, really delicious Italian food in quirky, characterful surroundings, always buzzing with customers and so reasonably priced.

If you want to eat out in this part of Devon your choice is either pricey gastropub or (much rarer) slightly less pricey traditional pub fayre. Or this place, a small but freakishly good pizzeria transplanted from Naples. They were packed last Tuesday, mostly with Italians and with good reason, everything we had was excellent.

Living in Torquay we have noticed this wonderful little Italian restaurant when passing through. Unusually a BYO, we decided to make the best of it and stay over at the White Hart Inn. Beautiful plant display at the entrance whilst inside you will find a delightfully rustic dining room. Open kitchen for further entertainment. An excellent thin base pizza. My wife was a little disappointed with her lasagna and the lovely crew graciously reduced the price. Excellent wines purchased from The Bottle Shop opposite. Doggy friendly. Handy tip: reserve your table in the main street level room as this is more atmospheric than the basement. We shall return!🇬🇧🇳🇿

We visit Moretonhampstead at least twice a year and we've been visitors to Berto’s since they opened. Due to our small (grand)children we have a take away, and there are usually 9 pizzas on order. We've not had an issue yet… A. M.A.zing. Can’t thank them enough for such excellent pizzas and excellent service ❤️❤️❤️

Fantastic authentic pizza in a lovely environment. Best pizza I have eaten outside of Italy! Also do great spaghetti dishes and really nice dessert. Book - as always busy. Downstairs great with a big (6 or more) party. Upstairs great for small groups.

The Pizzas were excellent and I strongly recommend them as probably the best cooked food that Moretonhampstead has to offer. We had to wait for service, seated in the downstairs room, which was pleasant enough but somewhat airless. Another patron was coughing a lot and I wondered if this was my night to catch Covid! The best table downstairs is in the window and was reserved for a well known local customer. Consider takeaway!
