I’ve been a few times and will no doubt return a few times. Ever changing menu, some which are fantastic, others OK. OK wine list, with a mostly French and Italian selection. Markup is fairly reasonable. Service is always great. If you book far enough in advance, you’ll get the table for two otherwise you’ll probably end up sharing a table with someone never felt intrusive. Probably the best option you’re going to find in the area and more reasonable than their London restaurants.

Authentic Italian (no giant pepper grinders here). A far cry from the gingham tablecloths and parmesan graters that form the chattels of typical British town ristorante's, Emilia is a delightfully simple yet elegant Osteria that showcases local produce through Italian cooking. On a maturing summer's evening, we entered into Emilia's welcoming "cucina abitabile." Ageing furniture leads the eye to reassuringly clean kitchen steel nested behind a bar (reserved for "mangiare al banco") and a stark exposed plaster wall that emulates the Italian style throughout. We were seated promptly on a large shared table where conversation and privacy was protected by low lighting and the atmospheric (but not intrusive) hubub of fuzzy fellow diners also enjoying the experience. A glance at the menu made clear I would be grateful for the charming waiter's navigation through some of the less familiar Italian cookery terms that formed a pared back offering of 14 or 15 plates, ranging from antipasti to richer dishes. Sharing is the way here, and with guidance, we were able to curate a palette that would satisfy us both. Chunks of bread and freshly sliced coppa opened for the stars of the show; a pickled fennel mint and chilli salad, a clam saffron and tomato brodo, and a courgette caponata with ricotta and almond. The caponata was especially remarkable in showcasing Emilia's commitment to flavour , a revelation - a simple dish elevated to something truly gobslobbering. Each plate was a reminder that the skill in making simple ingredients sing should never be underestimated. The fresh dishes are prepared in an open kitchen with the chef's expertise on display, and our own dietary adjustments were met flexibly, easily, and without fuss. The wine list is as you would expect of a true osteria, extensive and expensive, but the food quality deserves to be matched, so you can justify the investment into a finer vinello. Emilia's charm is irresistible, enjoyed, and recommended by locals, tourists, and the staff of neighbouring eateries alike. A place, not far from our home that we will return to, not only to be satiated but transported.

Fully merits it's Michelin write-up. Yes, there are a lot of counter seats which can be a bit uncomfortable but here, it's all about the food. It was essentially all excellent - small menu, sharing plates..especially enjoyed the Clams and the mutton ravioli - but the total star was the "offal of the day" - braised pigs ear. Suspend your disbelief - it was amazing cooking. Great food (and very interactive - you're in the kitchen) supported by a short but high quality wine list as well as very professional and friendly service. Fantastic and worth a detour.

I'm very sorry to say that our lunch was super expensive, the wine was very poor and our lunch portions were tiny, more like a side order or starter. There was only one pasta option, no pizza and no salad or veggies on offer as a side order. Service and music were very good, the waitress (owner/manager?) was very helpful and efficient. Sorry to say that, for us, it wasn't a great experience. I'm half Italian and have travelled extensively, but I didn't feel that it was authentically Italian. Sorry, but true.

This is a great little restaurant in Ashburton. The setting is rustic and be aware the seating is counter top or communal tables with only one table for two, when you book however you are given the choice, subject of course to availability, do book though as it gets busy and is a small place. The menu is limited but we had no problem with choice and the food is excellent. Courses come out when they are ready and be prepared to share as the menu is best enjoyed together. The chefs are very talented and we had some wonderful dishes, especially the 'fennel & crab' and the 'offal of the day' - pigs liver on our visit. It is not cheap, expect to pay £50 per head with a glass of wine & coffee but it is well worth it.

On being shown the menu we were advised to share the starter dishes as well as the mains . Thought strange as Emilia is listed as a restaurant. However when our ordered starters of pickled mushrooms and cuppa arrived we realised needed to order bread to balance the dishes. Eating theses on their own some what challenging. The mains arrived with same advice and again portion size seemed somewhat meagre but the mutton ragu pasta was excellent for its depth of flavour however my offal of the day ox kidneys with borlotti beans was a very small portion i.e. side plate size with the ox kidneys over cooked and the borlotti beans just under , on the edge of being crunchy. But all power to any restaurant who promote nose to tail eating in this country , we need many more of them . Howe ever the portion size of the dishes and the ethos of sharing tend to lend itself to a tapas bar rather than an Italian bistro. Had a glass of the rosso wine which was basic “plonk” and at £7 a small glass grossly overpriced . I also noticed he adjacent table had ordered a bottle of wine which, when arrived , placed on the table already opened not good practice but seems to be prevalent in this country. All in all one can see the effort and skill sets being applied but not sure if it has found its niche market yet. However to have achieved a bib gourmand listing is an accolade in itself.

The first, and amongst the most important things to say about Emilia, is that it is incredibly wheelchair accessible. This may seem like a strange way to begin a restaurant review, but amidst a sea of cute bistros and quirky cafés - each with several steps out front and not enough space inside to maneuver a full belly, let alone a wheelchair - it was incredibly refreshing to experience a restaurant that offers both wonderful food and perfect physical access, without compromise on either. It is a final nail in the coffin of the long-since disproven notion that aesthetic charm and accessibility are mutually exclusive. To speak of the food for a moment, Emilia offers sharing-style Italian dishes at a standard that is uncommonly found in Devon, with a menu that (according to the excellent and knowledgeable serving staff) rotates weekly. The starters (we had pickled fennel, green chilli + mint; Castelbelbo + sweet pickled rhubarb; mortadella Toscana) were superbly prepared and comprised of clearly excellent quality ingredients. I adored the main course (Lasagnette, duck + guanciale ragu) - a dish beautifully executed and (wilfully) charmingly rustic in its presentation. With dessert, the bill came to around £50 a head, including service, which seems reasonable for what's offered. I'd also like to make a note of the atmosphere, which was lively but without making the common mistake of music so loud that conversation is impossible. The only minor constructive comment I'd have on this front is that the lights were a little too low to read the menus comfortably, which may be problematic for those with less-than-perfect vision– however I have no doubt that accommodations (menus with larger text, etc) have been made/are easily possible. Everything about the meal - and Emilia as an establishment - was sublime. I was absolutely delighted to have discovered it and I am very much looking forward to my next visit in the (near) future!

We were 20 minutes late for our sitting as our sat nav took us completely the wrong way however the staff were so accommodating and understanding when I explained to them. From the moment we walked in the restaurant it felt like we were in a little cosy Italian restaurant in Sardinia. It really did make you feel you were on holiday. The food was exquisite, with nice sharer dishes which were extremely tasty and presented well. The wine we ordered was lovely also. The portions were well sized so that if you had 4 or 5 sharer plates that you didn’t feel overwhelmed. The waitresses were great in explaining the menu and very attentive. Watching the chefs work away in a homely kitchen was nice touch as well. Overall 5 star and we will return. A great setting for a romantic dinner.

As has been written elsewhere, Emilia was set up by a pair of London restaurateurs who had made the well travelled escape to Devon. Choosing Ashburton was an inspired decision. Inspired and slightly brave but it seems to have paid off. Full on a Wednesday night in October and full quite often if you look at the reservation site. It's a small venue with around 20 covers, open kitchen and relaxed decor. The food is freshly prepared before your eyes from a menu that changes regularly and includes dishes such as "offal of the day"... much better than it may sound. It's Italian so there are always a couple of pasta options and an imaginative selection of meat and fish from a seasonal menu that isn't overly long - always a good sign. The idea is that you order a number of sharing platters. Quality of food and ingredients is very high and flavour matching is superb. The chef on the night we visited trained at Adode and Gidleigh under Mr Caines, so you know that you're in for a good experience. There should be a little more choice for vegetarians and pescatarians. Service is efficient and professional. There seemed to be more wines available than appear of the wine list (I didn't ask but there is a cellar selection option), however, the wines on the list are of a very high standard. Just what we need more of in Devon - restaurants like Emilia. The owners deserve credit for what they have done. In truth, I wavered between awarding 4 or 5 stars (so probably deserves 4.5) but given that we need more restaurants like this to arrive and thrive in Devon I'm happy to round up, rather than down.

A very friendly and warm welcome and a charming restaurant too. I appreciate a number of reviews mention the seating and have to concur it is somewhat basic and not the comfiest. However, it does enhance the genuine ambience. Yes, a limited menu, but extremely authentic fare. Excellent bread and olive oil. Very good quality and nicely cooked pasta and a superb slow cooked beef Ragu. Also a perfectly cooked lambs liver dish. A really good, well made ricotta, lemon and pistachio tart and a superb raisin ice cream. They offer a nice selection of wines (not all Italian) at what I consider acceptable prices for something a little different. One Tip: Especially if you do not like a bar stool. Choose the table for two or four, The stools do limit your enjoyment of the venue (backs to everyone) and it's very difficult not to slouch and not good for your digestion.

This living-room-sized restaurant with its thoroughly professional but warm atmosphere (literally on the night we went, a very warm and muggy evening) is a gem. The kitchen is on display, tiny and remarkably calm, creating what we found to be delicious, flavoursome dishes. Sensitive adaptations were made to accommodate one of us being vegetarian, and as that vegetarian there were some undefinably delicious flavours. Considering the quality and freshness of the cooking, the food was well priced and we had a good meal without coming away stuffed. The wine wasn't cheap but was far more interesting than the usual generic fare. Somebody has thought about this and is doing it well, was the overall impression. If I didn't live a couple of hundred miles away I would go as often as I could find an excuse!

I have had great Italian food in dozens of locations (such as London, Italy and Switzerland). This restaurant is in the top 3 of all the Italian places I have visited. I am reluctant to review it because it is so good and I don't want it to become impossible to obtain a booking. It is by far the most impressive cooking in Dartmoor and one of the best restaurants in Devon.

Best restaurant I've been to for a long time. Exceptionally friendly staff and the food is really in a league of its own. Not cheap but not overpriced and definitely worth every penny.

Incredible meal and the loveliest staff. Big shout out to the chef and staff there. Every dish was incredible and we had a wonderful evening, probably the most relaxed kitchen atmosphere I've ever seen. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone, one of the best meals I've had in the UK.

Three of us visited for lunch today and WOW what a lunch. We started with bread and oil, pickled peaches with Gorgonzola and excellent Coppa, All perfectly matched flavours. Followed by veal, pork and lardo with tagliatelle, again great flavours. Followed by plum and bay ice cream and a nectarine, raspberry and almond tart with mascarpone cream which were amazing. What a find, thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Not really quite sure what Emilia's is.. the food is Italian but the way of serving "sharing plates) was far more Spanish. The food is served in the order on the menu which again, far more Spanish than Italian. I don't really like being told...

Just a fantastic evening, lovely balance of well selected Italian food cooked in front of us. Chef was open to talk us through what he was doing in his open kitchen. Clearly a hit with the locals as booking isn't easy. We sat on bar...

What can we say about Emilia?? It was fantastic. We went with a group of 5, and shared all the courses between us. They were simply amazing. Each one was better than the last! The offal of the week was pigs liver and never have I had this cooked so beautifully. The pollack with nectarine was light and flavourful, the ray wing the same. If I'm ever back in Ashburton I will absolutely be booking another table. This is a place everyone should try!

My husband and I had such a lovely evening at Emilia. Food was so good - beautiful ingredients treated with the utmost respect. A little slice of Italy in Devon. Lovely service, we felt really looked after. If I lived locally I’d come all the time - a real gem.

Enjoyed our 3rd visit on Sunday evening and always worth the travel from home in Torquay and stay overnight in the White Hart. This is a truly wonderful rustic and cosy family Italian restaurant. A simple menu of perfect thin base pizza and pasta dishes. Busy and atmospheric with an open kitchen for your further entertainment. We were initially attracted by the arresting bright red facade and beautiful display of potted green plants on the pavement. Very reasonable prices especially enhanced as this restaurant, despite being licensed, is also a BYO. Happy days! Another rather lovely and rare feature is that Berto's is doggy friendly. Everyone is happy. TripAdvisor Torbayaotearoa 🇬🇧 🇳🇿

We were attracted by the good ratings that we read. Unfortunately I could rate our experience no better than average. It was a cold day, there was no fire and it felt cold in the pub. The seats were old and uncomfortable. The Ciabattas were burnt in places and there was no sauce with the meatballs. The salad was very limited. Very disappointing considering we had gone out of our way to visit.
