The Horns Inn, Slitting Mill in Cannock Chase

I visited this pub a couple of Sundays ago, the service was quite slow and they seemed to take for ever to take our first drinks order, we ended up going to the bar in the end ourselves. Another long wait for our food order to be taken, but when the food arrived it was all forgotten about. The Sunday roast was to die for, by far the best Sunday roast I've had in a while.

Went on Friday for an early birthday meal with family. Superb service The food was absolutely amazing. Could tell everything was freshly cooked and prepared x

So disappointed. Food is good but service is worst I’ve experienced and the shouty moaning image created on special media makes you feel like you’re not good enough to visit. I won’t be able to answer the inevitable reply but trust me, this place makes you feel like a flump for expecting drinks order to be taken within the first hour of sitting at an uncleared table that you booked two weeks in advance. I miss the Horns that we moved to area for.

Went here last week. Food is flavourless, stodgy but is piled up high. Assume most of the food is frozen / reheated with little freshly cooked. Similar to wetherspoons standard in my opinion but more expensive. Gordon Ramsey would not be happy. And waitress had a bit of an attitude. Wouldn't go again.

I’m putting a review on here purely based on their service, or lack of it. I’ve tried to book this place on multiple occasions and it takes way too long for them to confirm a booking. Needs to be better

A lovely Bar/restaurant situated in the beautiful forest of Cannock Chase. The servers are all very friendly, the food was excellent and there was a really good atmosphere. Will definitely return.

The manager was really rude, this was a while ago but has bothered me ever since. I asked the waiter if I could get my pizza extra crispy as i can’t eat stringy cheese due to a phobia I’ve had since I was little. The manager piped up from the table next to us and just said, “you’ll get it how it comes mate” . I was only young at the time and this had really upset me, I try to avoid eating here due to this

Went for the first time today. The Sunday roast beef dinner was absolutely lovely. The meat was delicious and the Yorkshire pudding was so light. The veg was cooked to perfection. Then we had dessert. OMG!! Absolutely perfect. Well worth the money. Definitely would recommend and definitely going back. 5+++++ xxx

Great food and very friendly staff

Me and the hound popped in on our 8 mile hike for a much needed half way pit stop. Lovely pint of Wainwright's or 2 later and we were both rested for the trip back. The service was prompt and professional and we were both made to feel welcome. Lovely.

Booked to eat on a Saturday evening, had mixed feeling as I have read some bad reviews but we were pleasantly surprised as the food was delicious. I had a Rump Steak and the wife a lasagne both came out looking and tasting great. The steak probably tasted better than I have had anywhere else in years. The staff were very friendly, polite and attentive. The price was very reasonable also. I would recommend this place and will be going again.

Arrived for lunch on a Thursday; staff were very friendly and the food was amazing. I honestly had the best ham, egg, and chips ever! Everything freshly cooked and piping hot; 2 eggs perfectly fried; a mountain of garden peas; chips cooked to perfection with no sign of grease; and ham which was so thick and of the highest quality. Honestly, try it, you won't be disappointed.

This was my me and my wife's first visit here. We first went for a walk to the slitting mill waterfalls well worth a visit 👍. Then on to the horns. My wife had the fish and chips it looked and tasted exceptional. I had the hanging kebab with fries and garlic nan absolutely stunning my wife then finished off with a oreo cheesecake 👌. Service first class we will be back 10/10

Super pub amazing food at a good price. Allowed us to overnight in our campervan and they are dog friendly. Would recommend.

Under staffed but friendly. 3 meals ordered Slow cooked belly pork was a tasteless cremated strip, plate swimming in grease from sauce , duophoise potatoes which had a hard burnt top. Fillet steak ordered meduim came out cooked meduim to well and looked more like a sirloin , sent back and fresh steak given Informed chef cooks different and next time to order rare to meduim!! Chicken skewers no problems and very tastie. For money paid for meals would not recommend and won't be going back

Staff were superb, the owner was lovely and the food was outstanding. The combo was huge and the delicious could have fed 2 people. Pie was also brilliant

Lovely afternoon with great food ! Booked a table for 2pm, arrived slightly early but was welcomed and shown to our table. Given plenty of time to choose from the menu and was not disappointed with its our food. Nice amount of time between courses didn’t feel rushed at all and a nice chilled atmosphere. Really enjoyed all of our food, we had starters and mains and think it was around 1 hour 40 for the whole time we were there. Cannot fault the food or service and will definitely return!

Called in for a drink, nice atmosphere

Absolutely terrible we ordered food and we waited over 50 minutes for our food but I ordered food and told them I got allergies and they told me I could have some of what I put my order in then 20 minutes later I was told that everything I ordered was cooked in things I couldn't have, then when we refused to pay we were told by the manager that the food was on the pass but we still had to have it and take it away and the manager made us pay for the food even though we never ate it, the manager said that everything was cooked from fresh but the lasagne was reheated and not once did anybody apologise to us and the manager was very rude, sarcastic and intimating and very unprofessional for her position as a manager, she had absolutely disgusting behaviour towards us and we are very disgusted by her behaviour and how they treated us and infront of a child absolutely disgusting she should be ashamed of herself for the way she treats customers, so never going back and won't ever be paying those prices absolutely disgraceful and to be so bad mannered in front of a child no child should have to hear what the manager said to us.

Don't bother going on a 'hot' day - we arrived at half 6 to be told kitchen is closing and will only do pizza to then order at 6.50 to be told kitchen is closed because of the tremendous heat! Missed out on 4 families walking out and not eating. Avoid for disappointment.

Lovely location and pub .... But stopped serving food at 3pm, which was a tad disappointing after a travel .

We stayed in our our Campervan on the 27/07/2024 in there car park through park for night. Nikki the host and her team were amazing. So kind and generous. Above the bar it says come as customers and leave as friends and that is so true. The food was amazing. Rump steak was just like eating butter. They must have an amazing chef. Attention to detail amazing. Thanks for letting us stay

Stopped off for an end of ride pint on the Ducati, great beer, reasonably priced, great relaxed vibe about the place, right in the forest as it is. Love it.

Disgusting food we ate it because we was starving , we waited 90 mins for the food to come and I bought most of it home for my dogs ,expensive food but rubbish used to go pub quite often but never again

Just had our first meal here and wow.Why didn't we find out about this place before. The food and service was 1st class.We were a party of 4 and each course of food was fantastic and we were all commenting on the quality and quantity of the food.. With the feel and location of a country pub with a lovely atmosphere and friendly staff this is a place we will be going back too,again and again.5 stars and thank you for providing us with a memorable visit.

A lovely country pub. Warm, welcoming, rustic and cozy. Plenty of seating inside and out. Main meal...1 adult peperoni pizza and a kids cheese burger and chips. Desert...(childs) chocolate brownie with ice cream. 3 pints of larger, 1 pint shandy, 3 orange J20. Really good portions and value for money. Furry friends were welcome too.

Went last week for lunch and the staff were amazing and food great. Decided to go back tonight for a meal with family and the service was awful. It took 45mins for the starters to come, another 30mins for mains and 20 more for dessert by which time the entire pub was almost empty and we just wanted to leave. Nobody checked once that the food was ok and we had an overcooked prawn starter that no chef should have sent out. Rest of food was ok but the service ruined the meal overall and it wasn't cheap. Shame as I'd go back for lunch possibly but never an evening meal again. No staff to even complain to, the bar lads just wanted to finish and go home by the time we finished due to being so slow!!

Recently visited here with my family of 6, including two toddlers, and both the service and food were outstanding. All the staff that served us were very polite and couldn’t do enough. The food was beautiful - the best roast dinner we’ve had in a local pub. Will definitely visiting here again.

Very lucky to have The Horns in walking distance of our home. We love it here. Dawn, Nikki and all of the team are lovely and are amazing hosts. The food we cannot fault, the drinks selection is vast and the location is beautiful. There really isn’t anything not to love (especially the banter) Keep up the good work. We've found our new favourite place to eat....cannot fault the food at all, excellent portions, high quality food, cooked to perfection. Sunday lunch is the best I've had. Recommended to family and they all agreed with us. Lovely friendly staff and nice atmosphere. What more could you ask for.

Was hopeful for this place, as the reviews and food looked good. However we arrived,were acknowledged, but proceeded to wait at the bar for 15 minutes and still hadn't been served. We decided to leave when the lady at the bar started serving others who had come after us. It wasn't particularly busy either.

We absolutely love The Horns Inn Slitting Mill. Food is always excellent, staff very friendly and helpful. We always go and celebrate special occasions at the horns because we know they will look after us. Thank You to all who work there 👍👍

After our first visit which was a fantastic experience we decided to book to celebrate a family members birthday. The roast pork was fantastic very tender, can’t fault the dinner and the trimmings. Would help if sauces came out before the dinner arrived had ate half of it before the apple sauce arrived. Disappointing that two of the dessert options had run out and it was only early afternoon, shouldn’t be happening especially if they are popular desserts that early on. It was very busy so service was slow which didn’t bother us we were having a lovely family get to get together until we were told very rudely at 2:45pm that we needed to be off the table by 3pm which the manner it was delivered was uncalled for particularly as we were on time for our booking it was out of our control. It took 55 minutes from the time we arrived for our meals to arrive because they were busy, which we had no problem with but we can only go as fast as the people serving and was still waiting for our dessert order to be taken at 2:40pm did not appreciate the eye roll when pointing this out…however the manager and server did apologise.

Fab Sunday lunch, definitely coming back!

Used to have good food, but very disappointed with tonight's meal, gammon way too salty could not eat at all. FURTHER COMMENT TO PUB OWNER'S REPLY: I dined yesterday 26/06 for a birthday meal, I did complain and was told gammon is salt meat, same attitude as your comment, i know it is salty meat, but it is way beyond normal salty, my daughter's gammon is the same she could not stand it either, it is unfair to me paid meals which we could not eat!1 star is for gammon, new profile did not mean I did not dine at yours! Attached the screen shot of payment, maybe you can refund me the cost for "my made-up visit"?? Popped in after a bike ride on chase Told they were closed but website states open until 11pm?? Only wanted a drink and chill for an hour but bar man was quite rude and said the pub closed at 7pm on website. I said it states otherwise online but still he sniggered and stated “I don’t think so luv!!” Won’t be back as attitude was not good even though good reviews made us visit.

We have pre ordered meals due to number of people attending but a couple of us had their starters missed, so that was an additional 15 minute wait. Some of us found the meals bland e.g the salmon and swordfish and literally everything had spice/chilly. However the portion sizes were huge. We initially booked a dog friendly area which was confirmed but later we were told it was double booked, as a result our dogs couldn't attend . Parking is a nightmare, when you first go in it's really tight, should be a one way system as it can be accessed from another route.

Fabulous customer service and great food. The portion sizes are more than generous. Decor is lovely. Will return 👌

Excellent place for a leisurely lunch

I've got into the habit of not deciding on how much I like a place until the 2nd visit or more. This review I am leaving as I sit at the table with a full belly for the 2nd time and I cant not express how Inlove this place. I can honestly say it's some of the best food I have had. Great tasting food, brilliant portion size and the staff are amazing. Even my very picky child loves it here. Can't wait to come back again

Can't rank food, only stayed for a drink. All staff were friendly and welcoming. Revisited the following week, staff were same , food was fantastic, portions are really good, and from conversation we had with another diner they too were very impressed.

The food was fabulous. We couldn't eat it all so took some away with us and had it the next day

Pretty good pub and eatery. We booked 2 days ahead for Sunday lunch 1pm, a busy time; other places in the area were full. My wife and I both had the vegetarian butternut and beetroot wellington which was good. Our 2 companions had scampi and chips, and were pretty satisfied, but said the chips were slightly undercooked. The car park did not quite fill up although the place was busy.

UPDATE went on sunday at 3pm for sunday lunch food was amazing dinner was beautiful but pepperoni pizza was so hot kids couldnt eat it. Service wasn't the best but didn't spoil lunch. Popped in on Saturday after daughters football and was amazed. Food smelt amazing staff were really pleasant and helpful. Lady manager was really nice and helpful so we booked for Sunday lunch this week can't wait to eat there. Credit to staff don't get this many places now lovely cosy decor pet friendly reasonably priced nice menu good range of drinks

We found this great restaurant accidentally whilst doing the heritage trail walk. Luckily, we got a table despite it being Easter Sunday and not having booked. Staff are absolutely lovely. Only criticism would be there is a lot of hot/spicy food on the menu. I had a vegetarian dish and personally found it had way too much chilli in it, and I couldn't eat it. Having a fantastic shared dessert made up for it!

Had two pizzas between 4 of us realy fully stacked could not have wished for better service and piping hot food well done. I could fully recommend it.

Went today for food, it took 25mins to be seated then a further 35mins to recieve food, beef was under cooked and pink, the dinner was missing items of food that should have been on plate, as I left a bad review on there fb page and they asked me to remove it, I responded to them adding to my review and they have now blocked me and removed my review, shocking a business can remove bad reviews makes you wonder if they have done it before, they should take criticism and try to rectify it not hide it away, shocked they can do this as it doesn't give a true transparency of a business

9 people out of 10 in our party got sickness & diarrhoea!! Went for a wedding, the manager was rude. When one of the bridesmaids politley complained about her food she threatened to make her leave the pub. The service was horrible, food was cold and borerline inedible!! They served in a random way and not a table at a time. The bride and groom were last to get their meals. Awful place. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND!

Upon arrival the car park was a little chaotic as they've changed the separate in/out entrances to just one narrow entrance going in/out. The pub is located on quite a sharp bend within this lovely little hamlet so that makes it a little tricky getting in/out, especially at busy times. Inside the pub itself there was a lovely atmosphere and we found our reserved table. We were a group of 10 and had pre-ordered although there was still quite a bit of confusion when confirming the orders. The food orders did get a little mixed but were sorted quickly. I've dropped a couple of stars for this and also because most of the food served was at best luke warm. Nobody ordered any dessert due to issues with mains.

Pleasant and charming cosy country pub serving great food all day and evening , Sunday roast here is bar far one of the best I’ve had of the many places I have been. A great friendly pub/restaurant that you will want to visit time and time again.

Midweek meal prices are excellent for amount of food. Drinks on the other hand are way to high - 175mm Red £6.70 - Birra Moretti £5 pint. Our bill for for meals £80 (approx) Drinks £65 Inc: 5 Wines+++5 Beers . . . Overall a nice experience, staff were attentive but £75 a couple with tip is a little extravagant on a school night

The food wasn't too shelf, but good, far better than most. But the staff and atmosphere were the best I had experienced in a long time. A Proper British pub

Stopped at The Horns for lunch mid week, following a walk on Cannock Chase with a group of friends. Most of us had the halibut off the "specials" and all agreed it was one of the best and most memorable meals - the beer was good too! Well done and thanks.

Popped in whilst in the area. Great beer and atmosphere. Food was... mediocre. The Lasagne was overly herby, like they went mad with the Herbs de Provence. The pie was a little bland, with weak thin gravy. Pizza was amazing!! Will still come back when in the area.

Says this place is dog friendly. We went in with our dog. We were told that there was an area where dogs could go which was fine. We sat down next to the dog water bowl in an area that had a dog in. We were told we couldn’t sit there as it wasn’t the dog area. Couldn’t be bothered to argue as we were also informed they had stopped doing food, 3 o’clock on a Sunday. Pretty un dog friendly if you ask me. We won’t be returning.

Chose The Horns for a family funeral buffet. Approx 50 people in attendance. Many people commented on the food quality, some saying it was the best buffet they had ever tasted. There was a wide variety of freshly prepared hot and cold food with plenty for everyone. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming. We would highly recommend and think many of the guests will be returning. With thanks from the, Floyd and Allen families.

I came here with my wife and daughter for some food and a few drinks. The food was delicious, I really enjoyed it so will definitely be coming again soon! The staff were all nice and friendly and the place itself tidy and clean.

Went here for lunch. What a change in 2 years. After waiting a while for the food, which is normally a good sign especially when there were not many diners, the meals arrived. A fish finger sandwich which was in the wrong bread, this was spotted by the waitress and replaced immediately. So not too bad. Next was the burger, the bacon was so crispy and chewy it had to be removed from the burger. The patties were burnt and indelible. Eventually the waitress came back and asked if everything was OK with the meal and I said that the burger was inedible and seeing that my partner had finished her sandwich I did not want a replacement. I was then asked what did I want to do, strange as I would have thought that it was obvious, I asked if it could be taken off the bill. This was done. Overall a severe disappointment compared to a couple of years ago. Will not be returning.

Lovely staff & food but the ale is some of the best kept beer I've tasted in a while. Certainly gets my vote and future custom!! 👌🏼
