The Hope and Anchor in Northumberland

Booked a table for the Friday night and glad we did as was very busy. Great selection of food and it was great to watch the kitchen staff work from our seats at the rear of the restaurant. Food was excellent and plentiful. Service was also very good. On seeing the Fish & Chips coming out for other tables we decided to order a takeaway for the Saturday. Collected it right on time and both the fish and the chips were cooked to perfection. In face, one of the best suppers I have ever had. Won't hesitate to pop back in when in the area.

Staff were very pleasant and we were made to feel welcome. But the food was pretty average unfortunately, especially for the price charged. We ordered garlic bread then lasagne and ravioli. The garlic bread was OK but we’ve definitely frequently had better. The ravioli was also OK, not particularly tasty but OK. What put me off was the amount of uncooked veg thrown in with it - slices of almost raw red/green pepper and onions. Not really my idea of a ravioli. The lasagne seemed quite bland. Overall, this felt like someone trying to do Italian who doesn’t really know how to do Italian. At least not like the Italian people who own restaurants we’ve been to and who have cooked for us. There was nothing wrong, and the staff were lovely, but it was pricey and not especially tasty. Will try elsewhere next time.

Really recommendable. Friendly service, pleasant atmosphere and a nice menu to chose from. The ordered food came quickly and was delicious. We went there two days in a row and thoroughly enjoyed both evenings.

We ate here twice during our holiday as the food was so good and the service excellent. They are both dog friendly and people friendly, very efficient and accommodating. Would highly recommend.

The restraunt managed to seat us even though there was nine of us,,the staff were friendly, the food was lovely and reasonably priced could not fault it

Bonus was the happy hour that was on 4.00pm - 5.30pm, included Pizza and Pasta. Definitely recommend if you’re in the area.

Booked a table for a Saturday night dinner. The staff were friendly and accommodating, the food was great and the atmosphere and drinks were superb. Fully recommended.

Had a meal here one night while staying in Alnmouth, two adults and one child. Pub was busy, staff were struggling to keep up with food orders, serving tables, clearing etc but were clearly working very hard. Service was reasonable, not great. Food was pretty average, not bad, not brilliant. Portions were very large, quality not that great. Fish and chips not as good as we had elsewhere. Children's menu is very good, good selection and kids portions are enormous. Starter and main each for two adults, one kids meal and one round of drinks came to just under £80. You can get better for the same price.

We turned up as a walk in on the off chance they had a table and they managed to not only squeeze us in but also give us one of the loveliest family meals we have had while we were up in Alnmouth! On the first night we booked a table; it was steak night so we wanted to make sure we didn’t miss out. We’re a family of 4 and the children had the lasagna and arribiata penne pasta, which was made to order and my daughter could choose how spicy she wanted, which was perfect. A side portion of chips which were excellent, went down very well. My husband and I enjoyed the steak and sides option, served with a lovely cold bottle of South African Sauvignon Blanc, totalling £45. The steak was a really good size, but was every so slightly on the chewy side, however every mouthful had great flavour and considering that I can’t cook steak very well myself, that was what was important. The steak was served as we had requested: medium and well done. We had a table in the kitchen room and saw the chefs at work. They clearly work very hard and the wait for food was spot on. Everything was served nicely and by very efficient waiting staff. They were really busy, so managed exceptionally well. The bar was well stocked and the draft beer was delicious; which is what we had on our second night, when we walked in and managed to get the last table. Marcus, who was managing the tables and restaurant area was really efficient and despite being extremely busy, still made time to check on us and make sure we had everything we needed. Considering we were a walk-in, at no time were we waiting long, and when he’d seen we’d finished a drink, he asked if we’d like anything more, which when we did, it arrived quickly. He also made time to stop and chat to the children; he was very patient. Check the menu first, as they don’t seem to do a beef burger, however I was very tempted by the vegan burger. I had the bolognese and my daughter had vegan meatballs which were both really nice. My husband had the chicken in peppercorn sauce, which was cooked from scratch; very succulent and tasty. My son on the second visit chose the penne tomato pasta from the children’s menu. He’s 10 and it was a reasonable portion for him (perfect for slightly younger), but helped by a portion of delicious fries! It’s a really nice place to eat and you can tell they all work really hard.

Attentive staff. Quick service. Excellent food. Modern comfortable restaurant. Indoor pizza oven. Clean well laid out tables.

We recently visited Alnmouth for a week’s holiday. We are dinner here 4 times as it was so good. Really warm welcome, excellent food and good value. Super dog friendly. Would definitely return .

Lovely people, great service. Would recommend both the fish & Chips and the pizzas. Dog friendly and they were really helpful and fed us even though they were really busy.

A fabulous stay .Rooms were tastfully decorated , well appointed and very comfortable .We had a large walk in shower which was great after long walks( puffin room) All staff were excellent- friendly helpful and efficient offering excellent service across our three night stay .Breakfast was excellent with good choice .We tried full English and also Eggs Benedict with plenty of coffee and tea all very tasty and well presented. We ate in the restaurant on our first night -amazing fish and chips on Good Friday and booked again for our last night when we had delicious mussels and a sharing antipasta board .Menu had a very good choice and they also made pizzas in their own pizza oven.We have stayed in several places in Alnmouth but will make this our place of choice next time we visit . Well done to all staff for making our stay such a good one .

The front of the restaurant certainly doesn’t do it justice ! tastefully decorated and lovely ambience, the food was on another level, the Chicken Cacciatore is probably the best I have ever tasted ( I’ve tasted a lot ) my wife had the Picanho Steak which was also exceptional and with a reasonably priced good wine list we were more than pleased, just disappointed we found it on the last day of our stay in Alnmouth 🙄

The roast Sunday lunch was substantial: plenty of belly pork for me, lamb for her with nice roast potatoes and lots of turnip, mashed potatoes and an outstanding and large Yorkshire pudding. However the mixed green vegetables were exactly the same as a microwaveable portion that I had bought the day before from the co-op which was bit of a disappointment to realise that the chef was cheating. Service was efficient and friendly. It was a very quiet afternoon with only two other diners. It was dog friendly and a bowl of water was provided for our thirsty dog on request. The pint of Alnwick IPA was very nice. The one bit that really annoyed me was the almost £5 ‘service charge’ added to the bill. Don’t have a board outside advertising Sunday lunch for £16.95 then sneakily chuck a whopping charge on top. This insidious metropolitan practice which I thought we had got rid of in the 90’s really peezes me off. The tip would have been bigger. In conclusion , nice but nothing special.

Six of us had a very nice evening meal here. All had starters and mains. The steaks looked very good and the chips tasted great. I had the prawn Alla King, loads of flavour and a nice sauce. The food and the customer service were excellent, so much so that two couples booked for their overnight stay and steak night Wednesday. Would not hesitate to visit again.

This was our third trip to the Hope and Anchor using the Winter staycation deal. We arrived Wednesday lunchtime, and we parked our car up right outside. We received a warm welcome from the Bar Manager Marcus. Check-in was swift, We made a reservation for the evening meal, and Marcus offered to help us with our baggage as we had taken our dog with us. The hope and anchor are very dog friendly. Our dog Freddie was made to feel very welcome, He was able to dine with us in the restaurant too. We ate there both nights. We found the food to be excellent. The steak night deal on Wednesday was very good value for money and delicious. Our room was immaculate. We stayed in Lapwing. It was modern and spacious. The room was very warm, which was lovely, especially at this time of the year. The breakfast menu had a good choice of hot food to set you up for the day ahead. The Hope and Anchor is situated in a good location with street parking. Excellent base for local walks and, of course, the beautiful Alnmouth beach! The staff were amazing, so friendly and helpful. We are looking forward to our trip next year!

Lovely lunch. A return trip for the fish finger sandwiches. Huge portions and delicious. The staff are friendly and accommodating and service was quick. Would highly recommend.

Stayed at The Hope and Anchor for 2 nights from 10th November and we had the most incredible stay Marcus was the most attentive host and nothing was too much trouble he is such a fabulous guy with a fab sense of humour. Our room was ready early which was a bonus and the room was beautifully decorated, clean and well stocked with teas and coffee and plenty of towels too. We unpacked and came down to the bar to have food and picked from the afternoon specials menu which was delicious and a huge portion and I would highly recommended choosing from this menu great choice We ate in the restaurant one is dog friendly also and we both had steak which was cooked to perfection I also had the mussel started and they where delicious I had the house Sauvignon blanc which as a fab price and great quality Breakfast menu has a great choice also hubby had full English and I had eggs Benedict which was delicious there was also a choice of fresh juices and cereals the breakfast staff where very attentive and service was exceptional Saturday afternoon we came back from a lovely walk around Alnmouth and then took the bus into Alnwick we came back and had the soup which was served with 2 wedges of focaccia which was just what the doctor ordered in a fresh but chilly day. After visiting the serviceman club to watch the Newcastle match which is definitely worth a visit great prices and very comfy and great atmosphere we went back to The Hope and Anchor for our evening meal Hubby had fish and chips or maybe that should be whale and chips lol which he said was the best he had had and I had the curry with prawns which was stunning and I’m sure the Arribiata was to lol finished with the tiramisu Without doubt we will be back the hospitality we experienced was outstanding Thank you Marcus for making our stay an amazing one and Thank you Tracey it was so lovely to meet and chat with you and being so approachable you have a little gem in The Hope and Anchor Best Wishes Maurice and Allison

Went as a family of four. We only went as they said they did gluten free. They did gluten free but very badly. We came away very disappointed. Gf Pizza was tiny and undercooked and had to send back and blonde waitress was very frosty and rude. If the gluten free pizza is this tiny it needs a reduction in price. No atmosphere in there, they had twinkly lights which were nice but also had spotlights on above which cancelled them out, music on was too loud. Food extremely over priced. We were put on table in corner which was very hemmed in and no room to move. Toilet door lock broken and floor filthy. We paid over £90 and didn’t even get a friendly smile.

As usual, a really enjoyable experience, warm, friendly reception, good service and excellent food. We always eat here when visiting Alnmouth, our two Goldies are so well received, it is so dog friendly. The staff are to be commended for knowing the menu, Marcus in particular has gone the extra mile in accommodating some food intolerances- it is much appreciated😃. Looking forward to our next meal.

Lovely place that's dog friendly, staff are really nice, all 5 of us had the fish and chips with mushy peas and tartare sauce, the large fish (you can order a half if you want) was as fresh as a daisy and cooked to perfection in a light non greasy batter, the chips were plentiful and equally fresh, perfect mushy peas not reminiscent of school dinners and a perfectly balanced zingy/creamy tartare sauce. With a drink each the price was good for this day and age as a holiday treat, would definitely recommend and go again.

Lovely place! Lovely people. Clean rooms and comfy beds. The breakfast was delicious and made to order. If you decide to dine here in the evening, the food is excellent and you won’t be disappointed. We would definitely come again. Great location… few steps to a fabulous beach and a selection of pubs bars and eateries close by. A short drive to Alnwick for the castle and only an hour to Holy Island .

After being let down by another local restaurant, the very friendly staff managed to squeeze us in on what was already a busy night for them (Thank you for saving our night!). The staff, especially the gentleman, were amazing, so attentive and made us feel very relaxed. The food was beautiful, for a wide variety of dishes on the menu, and a selection ordered by our party, all were cooked to perfection. Thank you to all the staff! We would recommend to anyone to visit, especially if you want to go with your dog, as is so dog friendly!

So much looking forward to fish and chips in Alnmouth however the place was in darkness at 5pm . Nothing obvious stating they were closed so we decided to try the takeaway version on the website. Booking confirmed for collection at 6pm . Place still in darkness. £18 paid .Not happy 😡

A deservedly busy pub restaurant in the centre of Alnmouth. I had Pollo Milanese with crispy potato, rocket and parmesan salad, followed by a Chocolate Brownie. Both courses were excellent. Service was good, and the pub is extremely dog friendly - and very popular with dogs and their owners.

Stayed whilst en-route walking up the Northumberland Coast. The hotel looks newly renovated and the bar/restaurant area is spacious and modern. The bedroom was an inner one, so quiet and away from road noise. The bathroom was excellent with a lovely large walk-in shower. It was very warm and they'd supplied good fans to help keep you cool, which were welcomed! I would definitely recommend staying there. Thanks to all staff.

The good: A great location. Dog friendly as is most of Alnmouth. Hot breakfast is included and has a vegetarian option. Some of the staff nice (particularly the lady who checked us out). Tea and coffee in room and nice toiletries. The bad: Mainly, don’t expect to sleep in this room. The website says it “can get hot” (this is a massive understatement) and so they provide “air-con”….This was 2 old fans that were very noisy for very little breeze! I couldn’t hear the tv for them. Wifi didn’t work well in the room and toilet seat was also broken. Offered to scramble an egg for the dogs breakfast free of charge, which would have been a lovely gesture for a dog friendly hotel….Then charged me £5 for it at checkout because the manager wouldn’t give it away!!!

A lovely one night stay. Beautiful food for our evening meal. The steak was delicious. I've read that some people mentioned the service charge. There is but we would normally pay this for a tip anyway so wasn't a problem for us. Such a dog friendly place. We had a comfortable stay and a lovely breakfast. 😍 polite friendly staff.
