Pizza was fired,absolute perfection ..this place is fantastic ..the freshest Pizza around...The Hop is the place to go ...

Me and my girlfriend (and a small group of friends) tried getting into The Hop for some casual drinks when we were immediately denied entry by the bouncer for having minor visible tattoos (although he had visible tattoos himself?). I cannot believe in this day and age that this would still be a problem, and I was completely shocked and disgusted at the decision. If you’re a progressive person, do not go here, you wont get in anyway 🤙

Wanted somewhere to eat before we did a ghost tour. Family recommended this place and it didn’t disappoint. We ordered pizzas, garlic bread and fries which was all delicious. Service was speedy. Very relaxed atmosphere in the pub, would recommend to anyone.

Modern bar set close to the centre of town which if you’re a lover of good quality keg and cask beers are definitely worth a visit. The staff are all really friendly and helpful and it’s very spacious inside. They serve some of the best pizzas we have ever tasted which are made in the separate kitchen area by Alex? We went for a drink every day we were in the town.

Fantastic atmosphere, attentive, friendly staff who made us feel very welcome, and made a fuss of our dog aswell. Pizzas were great, nice beer selection. Highly recommend

Missed opportunity to impress six new local customers- alienated them instead. Dirty table and 35 minute wait (that according to a manager 'was average' even on a quiet early Tuesday evening? Written order for 5 pizza's turned into 4 - something wrong with the administration - organisation.

The pizza was terrible. No flavour at all and expensive! Four of us went, we all ordered different pizzas and were all underwhelmed. I'm not sure if it was a one off but all four pizzas were extremely bland. Salt, pepper and garlic were definitely missing from the base. Such a shame as I do remember the pizza being really good but sadly, we were disappointed. On a positive note they had good live music. Will be sticking to entertainment and drinks next time!

We go every weekend for food and drinks. The Pizzas are amazing and so much choice. Lots of drink choices as well and the staff are great. Izzy is the best very welcoming and lovely ❤️

Really sorry to have to write this review as we we have been coming to hop for over eight years and had fantastic pizza almost every time until today when we had our regular pepperoni pizza and it was awful, greasy and terrible taste. Turns out the hop group have changed their pepperoni to a beef version, which beggars belief, and it was terrible and left a greasy pool of fat under the pizza. Please return to your usual pepperoni and make our pizza special again!!

Great spot on Fossgate, short 'hop' from The Shambles, nice pizza and absolutely excellent beer! Comfortable seating, friendly staff and good music.

£10.20 for a pint and a half of mediocre beer. The beer choice was disappointing unless you like alco-pops. I opted for the vanilla porter which was not great.

This is our third visit to The Hop in the past 2 years and yesterday, it was just ok. The pizza base isn’t as thick as it used to be and the menu has changed (they no longer have sweet potato fries and we’re pretty sure that there used to be nduja sausage on the carne pizza instead of Parma ham). We ordered the carne pizza, a cheesy garlic bread and some truffle fries. The pizza was nice, just nice. The garlic bread was the best part - really delicious but the fries were very disappointing. For £5 the fries were not very hot, barely tasted of truffle and had a lump of parmesan shavings on top (which we’re really hard to eat as they kept falling off the fries haha!). I don’t think we’ll be returning - a huge shame.

Disappointing beer selection. No smell of pizza, maybe they don’t serve on a Tuesday? Didn’t hang around after a swift half.

We came for a regular family pizza, we are regulars here, the pizza was completely different ( worse) than usual, firstly was the same size as a kids one but stretched more and served in a bigger plate,it didn't look like a stone baked pizza, was basically a crunchy " electric oven style" pizza.The taste was ok but not the pizza we had before, if this is what's like now, we will rather go to pizzahut. I recommend looking at how it's been kneeded and also cooked as honestly the one I cook in the home oven is closer to a stone baked pizza

Pizza was tasteless, bland, uninspiring and the base was like cardboard. Toppings were sparse and all in all, I have had better "supermarket offerings. Cutlery was dirty and zero atmosphere - a great shame really as this place used to serve superb pizza. Yes, I was hungry so it was eaten but we won't be back.

Went yesterday. 3 drinks & 3 pizzas. All good. I would go again. Friendly staff. Toilets upstairs. Everything clean. I would go again. Cost just over £40, can't remember exact price. Big pizza oven. You can see them cooking.

We were staying at a B&B in Poppleton just outside of York and our hosts knew I liked beer and my wife liked pizza. When we looked at the menu the man behind the bar advised us that they did a deal whereby with certain drinks you get a beer and a pizza for £12. The pizzas were fresh and the toppings were so tasty, it was certainly the best pizza that we have ever had. The base of the pizza and the crust were so crispy and tasty I will definitely be back when I next visit York.

Went in the bar as a friend had been in the night before, nice bar and plenty space inside, bar staff could be a bit more friendly as only slight let down

Popped in here mid week to be greeted by a mono-syllabic unhelpful barman. To be honest, we almost left but my partner had heard good things about the beer - which turned out to be very good.

We had a lovely lunch, were able to take advantage of the weekday lunchtime deal, drink and pizza for a tenner. Pizzas were great, very tasty and filling. We also had our dog with us, which was fine but you have to sit in the front bar area. Nice vibe, good music and friendly staff.

With our young daughter in tow, we wanted somewhere chilled out that wouldn't be sniffy about young children - queue Hop with its reality excellent pizza (that you can watch be made if you so desire, like a little one might) and good beer choice. Friendly staff, great service, chilled atmosphere. Highly recommended with or without children.

We spent a fortune here on a work do last night but worth every penny. The venue itself is spacious, yet intimate, and the staff were wonderful company. Fantastic range of beers and although we didn’t eat here the pizzas we saw going out looked incredible.

Absolutely disgusted! Night completely ruined by the doorman who was rude, ignorant and caused upset. Service was terrible and ruined an 18th birthday. Will not be recommending this place to anyone and certainly will NOT be returning!!!

We stumbled upon this one, what a find. Six visited, six pizza: Piccante x 2, Carne, Three Little Pigs, Four Cheeses and a Margarita. Stone fired, thin base and a ton of flavour. We will definitely be back here.

2 of us here mid afternoon today . Escape from the miserable weather and from 4 weeks in Lockdown. Plenty of comfortable seating . There was a £2.50 margarita pizza deal ( Tier2) but we went for a Hawaiian pizza to share . Served straight from the kitchen. Excellent . Lots of tasty topping . Best pizza in a long time . Really enjoyable . Staff were very chatty and attentive. Good standard of cleanliness everywhere and plenty of hand gel. I had gin and tonic but my partner had the real ales and always enjoys the choices here. We will be back and maybe try the halloumi chips as well next time .

Tranquilo y sin problemas para encontrar asiento, servicio atento y amable por parte de la chica de turno. Se sentó en la ventana del área del bar y observó el mundo pasar mientras disfrutaba de una pizza recién hecha. La conclusión, perfecta para una parada a la hora del almuerzo, volvería.

Me di cuenta de que este pub caminaba por la ciudad como mi socio era un cervecero, por lo que el nombre llamó su atención. Regresamos más tarde (un viernes por la noche) y nos las arreglamos para conseguir una mesa al lado de la cocina. Normalmente no soy fanático de estar sentado en la cocina, ¡pero fue agradable ver que se preparaban nuestras pizzas! El chef los compró y luego nos revisó unos 5 minutos más tarde, lo cual fue agradable. Las pizzas en sí estaban llenas de sabor y no demasiado pastosas, lo cual era perfecto.

Quick drink and pizza. Escaped the rain and managed to get a table inside. App very useful and quick service. Pizza very yummy but ordered Halloumi fries which said it had a sauce and no sauce appeared.

We stopped here for a few drinks on a Saturday. It would appear that the place serves pizza too. Unfortunately we only had time for drinks. Service was good and the bar was clean. It is worth stopping here when up and about in York.

This is one of our favorite bars in york.staff are really friendly an polite.table service at the mo of course but a great place to come.never had the pizzas here but they looked amazing.look forward to going back soon.

Called in on Tuesday originally for one drink but atmosphere was good, service great & drinks very good so one turned into two, had we not had a reservation elsewhere for dinner we would have tried the food here as the pizzas looked amazing, this area of York is a great find with some exceptional bars & restaurants & staff that deliver amazing customer service!

Who would expect such a good pizza in a pub in York? I did my homework before visiting and decided to check this place out, and it didn't disappoint. There are many options to choose from, and the ones I tried were great. The service was excellent and I really enjoed the atmosphere. They have great selection of local drought beer.

Cosy traditional pub at the front and pizzeria at the rear. The Hop has a huge choice of cask ales to sample and the pizzas are nice to. A very relaxed and chilled atmosphere. If you go in the day then it’s worth having a stroll down Fossgate as there’s lots of little restaurants on this street so you can get some ideas for dinner.

Being craft beer drinkers we decided to come here for a quick bite to eat before a show. Not a massive fan of 'micro pubs' calling themselves craft beer places then offer food, sports, music etc. This place is a large venue, comedy nights on and stone bakes pizzas. We came for the beer and ordered a blonde from Ossett Brewery which was nice though the first glass had a mark on the rim. Bartender was a little sharp I asked to swap it. Blue Moon also on tap alongside a few others. Decor was dimly lit and offered a nice atmosphere yet toilet was a little dirty. Staff seemed relaxed with them chatting at the bar whilst I waited to be served. Pizza arrived with meat on it, asked for it without, and again waitress got shirty when I sent it back. Waited a further 30 mins (in addition to the 30 already waited) for the replacement to arrive. Was nice when it did but I was very hungry at this point.

As a local in york I am constantly trying all new and old restaurants out. This one always draws me back. Best pizzas in town, such great customer service and a lovely chilled atmosphere. Took my 2 year old there for pizza last sunday and nothing was too much for the staff, especially chefs. Such an easy place to have a family lunch. Highly recommend!

Went for 3 pizzas, the bar maid wiped the already dirty table and was wiping crumbs on our knees. Then they refused to serve us. Disgusting. Why did you take our money for pizza. We had the so called manager and another waitress come over been rude. Ossett brewery you need to change your staff.

New year’s visit to York. Went out for a bite to eat this evening. Enjoyed a pint of Yorkshire Blonde ( light easy to drink ale) and a pepperoni pizza. Nice atmosphere -open space with wooden tables - prompt service - good food. The pizza base is light and crispy and pepperoni spicy with a rocket topping. Would recommend..

Have visited this pub several times and would normally award 5 stars for good beer and service. However.......visited just before xmas 2019 with a few friends for a leisurely pint. I ordered Excelsius which is usually spot on but it was cloudy (not hazy) and didn't taste right. A friend ordered the same but his was ok. It was apparent that the barrel had run out. I asked a member of the bar staff to change it for a different pint but she tasted a sample and assured me it was fine. I persisted and waited to see if the beer settled but my initial impression was right and there was no improvement. I asked again if it could be changed and pointed out the difference between my friends beer and my beer. The same barmaid (Izzy ?) said she knew the products and worked here and knew the beer was fine. She then went off to serve somebody else. I tried a different member of staff, this time a young lad who said he would replace my beer but would have to charge me for it !!(£4 a pint by the way).I asked to see the Manager at this point but 'Izzy' said she was the Assistant Manager and was in charge that night.I was dying for a pint at this point. So, at the end of my tether I decided I would take a photo of the beer and of the barmaid with a view to contacting the brewery. All of a sudden a gentleman came to speak with me who actually was in charge that evening. He immediately accepted that the beer had gone off and replaced it . Common sense prevails. This action turned a 1 star into a 2. I attempted to speak to the barmaid on leaving the pub in a conciliatory way and explain there were no hard feelings but she stormed off in a huff. I think she needs to consider if she is suitable for a customer facing role. She was rude and arrogant. Looking at other comments on here it doesn't seem to be a one off unfortunately. Several people witnessed these events and I'm sure it can't do The Hop or Ossett Brewery any good. Maybe some training required on product knowledge and dealing with the public ?

I needed to use the disabled facility whilst in there and it was absolutely farcical with the the Italian pizza guy accusing me of not being disabled and stated didn’t know where the key was. Eventually after nearly 10 minutes and going to ask the kitchen staff again they provided the key. Not all disabilities are visible, I was left totally humiliated by your pathetic staff members, and I will never visit again. Very disappointed and hurt.

Went in for drinks. Looks small outside put opens out into a big pub doing food/pizzas. We had lunch and although it took a long time to come was good value and nice food. The beers were all excellent and staff friendly and happy in their work. Give this one a try.

This place was a great find - they have a good selection of beers and ciders, and house a pizzeria too! We had food which was well priced for the centre of York, £9 for the majority of pizzas and £3 for chips. Well worth a visit!

The Pizza was fantastic! Authentic Italian dough and taste. Lovely pizza makers, friendly and the service was fast. The pub is very beautiful and the atmosphere was excellent.

The Hop is a great bar along Fossgate that we visited on our 5 days holiday to York.

Pagamos nuestra visita habitual al Hop el viernes. Este es nuestro lugar habitual para comer cuando llegamos a York para tomar unas cervezas y, como de costumbre, las pizzas estaban en pleno apogeo.

This place is great - it's by far the best pizza you'll find in the city, at a reasonable price, too. There is an excellent choice of beers, including several guest ales - you cannot go wrong.

Bar maid tried to scam me and failed. Ordered gin n tonic. Glass arrived full of ice with slice of lime. But no gin! I questioned barmaid and said no gin smell, no taste and only a little melted ice in the base of the glass. She insisted had put a shot in. When I suggested she taste it herself she refused and put a shot in. I have no doubt she did it on purpose and expected me to simply pour in the tonic and not notice. Scandalous

A range of social seating to suit your occasion in a spacious interior. The main reason for being here should be the pizza though with Great lunchtime deals too if you work close to the centre. I’d recommend the pepperoni. Enjoy!

The pizzas were fine but nothing special. The bar staff were moody, amateur and inefficient. The live music was very good and the only reason we stayed.

Had read good reviews about The Hop, and called in on a Monday evening. They do a fantastic deal on a Monday - two pizzas and either a bottle of wine or two pints for GBP19.99. Not a huge choice of pizzas, but enough. Pizzas were delicious and straight from a wood-fired pizza oven as the best ones do, and the vino was good too. I was not happy to have the pizzas served on disposable plates which appeared to be polystyrene. There is a sign that says they are compostable, but nevertheless that's a whole lot of waste.

As per our visits to York we had to pop in The Hop. We stopped for a quick fresca pizza for lunch which was beautiful as always. Later that day we popped in to see the live band which was fantastic. The staff as always are super welcoming, warm and friendly. The Hop will always remain one of our faves in York and we always highly recommend to family and friends as a must see venue

We were hoping for GF pizza. But absent that, we ordered a tasty meat and cheese board. The chef came out from the kitchen to talk about alternatives to the garlic bread that comes with the board.
