Just cycled there with the dog. Wanted to sit outside with food but told we could only eat food on the decking, but dogs not allowed on the decking. So basically, we were excluded from eating. Ended up having a bag of crisps. Just finishing off drinks when a waitress brought food to the next table. When I questioned this in the bar they couldn't give me a reason. In a nutshell, if you've got a dog don't go there. We certainly won't go back.

My son decided to take me out for lunch. Always apprehensive as he knows I have high standards. The menu had some amazing choices on offer. I believe it was the new Autumn menu. My son had Truffle Mac & Cheese. I tasted some. I would normally avoid a pub mac&cheese but this was flavoursome and piping hot. I had the Arabian steak which was cooked to perfection, slightly pink. My son ordered the fish and chips. The fish was very fleshy and tasty and was the size of a small whale. I had the Hop Pole burger. The beef mince was quality and a great addition of pancetta and bacon chutney. I always ask for a bottle of tap water in a restaurant and pleasantly surprised this came in a carafe with ice and lemon and the water glasses arrived with ice and lemon as well. A great touch. The staff couldn’t have been more attentive. Big shout out to Adam for his attentive and smiling service. My friend and I go out for lunch’s often so are well versed in good and not so good service and food. Before leaving I messaged my friend insisting we come here as soon as possible. Would highly recommend this place. Yes there may be a small wait for the food but if you want food, unprocessed, cooked order and piping hot with quality ingredients then a small wait is worth it! Top quality chef! Sadly it won’t let me add photos which show how amazing the food looks.

I had lunch here with my Wife, I had a meatball baguette in which I found a hard, sharp piece of orange plastic which looked like the corner of a lid. Luckily I bit down on it before swallowing and was able to remove it from my mouth. I asked to speak to the chef who didn’t want to know and left it to the young lady in front of house to deal with. She told me she would raise it with her boss which I hope has happened. I hate to think of the damage it would have caused had I swallowed it. Safe to say we won’t be eating hear again.

I went to this pub yesterday, and I must say it is lovely and in a beautiful location. We bought wine and went outside, I wanted to order food so grabbbed a couple of menus. My friend and I were sat on a table next to the canal, and the staff member said food isn’t served to those tables, only on the terrace just outside the doors. This was a shame as I had just driven 3-hours from London. We liked where we were sitting, so I decided I wasn’t going to move just to eat. I was a little upset to then see food being served to a table just along from us about half an hour later - that is double standards. I returned to London without eating : ( Also unsure as to what was in the middle cubicle in the female toilets?

We went as a family of nine which included one child under four and two under one year of age. Albeit we were asked relatively quickly for our food order, nothing had appeared from the kitchen after one hour and thirty minutes, at which point we left. We asked three times if the child’s meal could, at least, be brought to the table without success. Staff seemed really inexperienced. As we left the manageress pointed out that the menu stated the wait could be up to forty-five minutes for food to arrive but didn’t seem to comprehend we had waited twice that long. Such a shame as the surroundings are lovely.

Well what a night we had at the Hop Pole last night!!! I booked three weeks ago for our family of 11. This week I emailed, at their request a list of meals. So our meals would be ready when we arrived. We arrived at 6.30 by 7.30 No Meal...We were then told ONE HOUR after arriving that the 1 Meal of fish and chips was not available. I asked to speak to the manager and was told by a very young nervous waitress "I suppose I'm the manager". After numerous complaints about the abysmal service our meal arrived ONE HOUR AND THIRTY MINUTES LATE. .The whole experience for what was a very special family celebration was an absolute disappointment. WE WILL NEVER RETURN TO THIS PLACE AGAIN. I finally asked for the name and email address of the real manager but this was refused. Staff are untrained no social interaction with guests and are quite rude. Had I read the reviews others have placed I know we would gave gone somewhere else. So I hope if you are reading this honest review you will think again about where you eat......

I am appalled by my recent experience at The Hop Pole. On Easter Saturday, the first warm sunny day of the year, I walked with seven others along the canal for a drink (or five!) at The Hop Pole. Our plan was to sit outside and have a few drinks and enjoy the weather. The pub itself is very nicely furnished inside and out. Unfortunately, I suffer from lower back pain (herniated disk) and neck pain (fused disks), which can become unbearable when I sit on hard surfaces for long, and the benches were all hard wood. So, on the way back from the ladies, I spoke to a member of staff. I explained that I was in a great deal of pain (in fact, I used the word agony, which was not an exaggeration) and asked if they possibly had an outdoor cushion I could use. She said no, sorry we don't. This, by the way, is often the case. Returning to my table, I was informed that, in fact, the shed, which was ten feet away from our table, was full of outdoor cushions. You could see them stacked up through the window! I returned inside the pub and asked to speak to the manager. Guess what? It was the same woman. When I asked her why she had been untruthful about the cushions, she told me in a defiant way that those cushions were 'musty', so she didn't think I would want one (remember, I used the word agony). I then told her I was sitting outside as part of a party of eight people who were planning to spend the afternoon sitting by the canal drinking, but now we would be finding somewhere else to enjoy the sunshine. That was when her whole demeanour changed. She apologised and said, "Of course I can get me a cushion." Too little, too late!

Disappointing visit to this pub. Food was ok (Hence 3 not 2 out of 5 ) Main problems were Chef left the building before we finished our order at 9.00 pm so couldnt get the sticky toffee pudding ! A lot of young staff that didnt know what they were doing, serving wrong dishes with incorrect sides etc leaving us to re-shuffle at the table. Toped off when the bill came with an £18.00 service charge. Restaurant filled with smoke at one point causing breathing difficulties for one of our party ( no explanation) they have 2 log burners and wasnt sure if they were 100% safe ! was asked if everything was ok at the end and I said no. The member of staff just went quite and continued with the payment as wasnt confident enough to ask what were the issues. Owner was walking around opening doors to eleviate the smoke and causing a draft. The conclusion was that no one was in charge as staff seemed lost and unmanaged. Asked one for the bill and she said im off home and just walked passed us with a mouth full of food. We actually said good bye to the chef on his way out as he knew he had left us before we finished our meal. This made us think that no one really cared !! which I dont blame them as they are only kids and if the boss doesn't care then why should they. He was sitting having a glass of wine just next to our table so must have been aware we were disappointed with the evening. £200 for 4 of us was expensive for this level of service. It was Saturday night and the pub felt quite ( Half empty ) we passed a few places on the way up and they were heaving which tells you something about this place. I would avoid in future as their are many lovely eateries in Retford. Also befware of the smoky fires as this could make you very ill if your next to them !! Mike

I had to put a 1 star for the three categories so that I could register a review. Looked up whether this establishment was dog friendly as we were attending a canine event a few miles up the road earlier in the day. Was delighted that it stated that it was and on our journey home impelled in the car park with our 3 brilliantly behaved dogs whilst the wife went inside to see if there was a place in the bar to eat as we were starving. On asking about food and availability to sit with the dogs the person clearing tables said that they were dog friendly but not on a Sunday. Not what it said on your site hop pole. In other words we are dog friendly when we are not so busy and your money comes in handy but get stuffed if we are busy. A warning to the ever increasing amount of travelling dog owners out there.

Very disappointed with our Sunday lunch. The service was diabolical... Thought our friends had booked a table but they hadn't. Asked the young girl who "greeted" us have you got a table for four to be met with a blunt 'no' asked when will the next table be free and was told ' no idea I don't know how long people take to eat' asked could you give me a rough idea as we're happy to have a drink and wait. The table was established for 45 minutes, and we're all happy with that. Waited at the bar to be served and had to ask the girls chatting & playing on their phones if they'd mind serving us. We sat outside in the lovely beer garden overlooking the canal once we got a drink. By the way The Bacardi wasn't poured to the top of the measure thingy. I think it was poor training rather than a deliberate short measure They actually called us to our table 30 minutes later yaay. Asked what the seasonal veg was to be told 'no idea, I'll go and find out' ... peas, carrots, green beans & cauliflower cheese (very seasonal) I asked could I have more veg and no cauliflower cheese please as I don't like it. I actually got he same amount of veg as everyone else 🤷 Beautiful meat but I don't think the plate of food was worth £18.95. Once finished we weren't asked if we'd like anymore drinks or a pudding even though a member of staff looked at our empty table on numerous occasions especially when she was at the side of us with a handful of forks sorting out her hair with both hands!! Poor service and badly trained staff are letting this place down. We won't be rushing back

Firstly, beautiful steak & ale pie, £16 a pop, but very very nice. Not too broad a range on menu, but cannot fault pie on pea purée with chips and gravy. Staff attentive, but not overly so. ************************************* EDIT - Be aware that a 10% service charge is added to your food and drinks bill in an underhand way. They tell you the cost, they take your card or cash and issue a receipt. We weren’t aware of the cost of our drinks so didn’t question the total £44 and change. Later driving home and working out the costs I thought the bill a little high. Checked the bill and there was the 10% service charge. Not mentioned at any time, it may be in the small print on the menu, but to me, underhand. We won’t be visiting again. D&D Bennett

UPDATE Sept. 2023 - Sunday Menu £18.95 for a Sunday lunch - top end prices. "Stand by, watch your front !.". Or .. "Cabin crew to seats, doors to automatic, here we go ! ".. Fairly busy inside - roughly 80% capacity. Outside areas empty due to weather. Bar staff too busy on personal mobile phones behind the pumps, & other bar staff behind the bar, drinking their own drinks in their own cups, requiring customers standing waiting at the bar for service to literally ask if they could serve them. Very bad . Those drinks & mobiles should be taken out of view or wait until the bar is empty of customers wanting service. - Not a good look or impression. (It's like they don't care). Spirit measures jigger NOT being filled to the brim correctly, leading to customers being sold short measures. Could just be poor training or unprofessional behaviour by the bar staff rather than purposeful serving of short measures tho'. Waitress holding approximately 7 clean forks in her hand whilst fixing her hair band with both hands, whilst setting the table is probably also NOT a food Hygiene recommend. Just put the cutlery down until you've finished your personal grooming I'd suggest. Taking orders - waitress asked what the seasonal veg was?, to answer , " I don't know, its seasonal". Staff should know the menu. During the meal not a single enquiry as to satisfaction with the food. Not too much of a problem there. Just etiquette, I guess. (Or lack of concern over this fact ?) Post meal ,no enquiry regarding additional drinks or dessert menu. - leading to the 4 of us not bothering to order additional drinks or desserts - another £ 40-45 sale gone amiss. (Perhaps grub pubs don't need the business these days?) - it's not as though pubs are constantly struggling/ going out of business these days tho' is it .. ' Oh, wait,.. my bad !' 😂 If it were my business,I'd be upset at the lack of awareness displayed & the sloppy habits that seem to be creeping in amongst the uncaring waiting-on staff- as a customer I'm displeased when paying these prices, as the food itself is quite good. The 'waiting on staff' let the whole side down here. After about 15 minutes waiting for someone to approach the table we accosted a passing member of staff, asked for the bill, paid , & left. Staff - some staff are identified by smart uniform tops ,others in normal clothes(albeit dark) give the impression that another customer is addressing you, so this can be annoying. Consistency/ uniformity is key here, I feel. Food itself was well cooked, well presented & good quality. Portions were reasonable at this price level. Kitchen team being let down by 'front of house'.

The pub is beautiful, very tastefully decorated with an excellent outdoor seating area. The menu however is extremely limited with hardly any choice for main meals which was very disappointing, especially when there are no specials in addition. Although the chips were homemade, they did not taste fresh, being very pale and chewy like they had been blanched for a few days. The staff were also not very attentive. It was a real shame as the pub and setting is stunning but the food offering left is feeling very under whelmed.

We visited The Hop Pole for the first time for a family wedding, great atmosphere, staff were amazing, very pleasant and helpful, live music, food we had was good but not amazing for a wedding, could do with a bit more parking but overall great experience 😀

The food was lovely. Had rustic bread and butter to share, a pasta bowl and pie of the day. The spinach tortellini was so tasty.

Can't speak highly enough of the venue, the staff, the catering and the wonderful setting. Staff couldn't have done more to make it a day to remember.....and they looked after the guests who have Coeliac Disease requiring a gluten free diet with real care and knowledge about it. Wonderful day.

Went to a wedding and it was brilliant. The venue is beautiful, the food was great and the staff were lovely. Wish it was closer to home. Well done to the whole team, it was really busy and we could all see how hard you were working in the ridiculously hot weather!

It was busy for a Thurs evening, good job we booked!, party of 6, service and food wax excellent. Not been before, more pricy than normal pub food but the service, standard of food and beautiful surrounding were worth it. Looking forward to another visit.

Best Sunday roast we’ve ever had. Was camping locally and found this place online, luckily booked a table as they were turning people away. Lovely pub by the canal, the food was perfectly cooked and the cauli cheese was 10/10. Desserts stunning as well. Would deffo return if we are in the area again in future. Many thanks

Pleasantly surprised! One look at the menu yielded little of appeal and an expectation of maximum price for a minimum portion. However, after ordering our food arrived promptly, looked appetizing, tasted good with decent portion sizes. Although I was a little disappointed with the chips which came several minutes after my main course, 'fresh out of the fryer' but hard and chewy nonetheless. The decor and ambiance are lovely and I think in part that's why my chicken breast and chips cost 18 quid. The wife was happy with her prawn and chorizo linguine for £17 which is all that matters. Can't fault the staff who were excellent.

We booked in for Sunday lunch after the recommendation of a friend. It did not disappoint. The staff were lovely and attentive and the food was amazing. The cauliflower cheese is the best I’ve ever tasted. My only criticism is, please either serve food canal side or let dogs on the deck. You lost custom yesterday. I will be going again🥰🥰

Rang booked table for two. Asked if they had veggie menu. Yes they said. Arrived. Sat down given menus. Then nothing. No service. After 15 minutes we got our own drinks at bar. Ordered food. One veggie option. After 45 mins food arrived. Hot dish...Cold! Complained to manager. She took cold meal off bill. Next table also said "rubbish service" which it was. Nice decor but menu and staff rubbish. Won't be going back till they get organised

Excellent main meal, side/starter that we had with the platter main course was both expensive and not very impressive in either taste or portion. Good service, 5 minute check done to confirm we were happy with the the meal.

Amazing setting, let down by the poor service and average (highly priced) food..... Visiting the area with friends and stumbled across this beautiful pub restaurant. Hopeful of good food and attentive service..... Delivered neither. Such a shame as lots of potential.

Had a lovely walk around the Idle valley nature reserve. Decided to go for a pub lunch afterwards. Not being local did a google search and this pub looked a good bet. It turned out it was. Canal side setting with amazing covered outdoor seating areas. Good food and drink. Helpful pleasant staff. It was sunny which for this year was a bonus! Well worth a visit.

Lovely pub on the canal, lots of outside seating with new garden furniture. We visited for Sunday lunch at 5 pm, booked a table. The food was fabulous, we all had the roast Turkey. Huge portion, fresh seasonal vegetables perfectly cooked. Extra gravy in an individual jug on the side. Chef came to see if we enjoyed our meal which was a lovely touch. Excellent service with a smile and really super atmosphere. It was the best meal we had during our stay in Retford.
