The Hip Hop Chip Shop in Manchester

Updated 19th Feb 2025; I've been back whenever I can since my first visit but when I heard the sad closure news we had to get back before it was too late. Hotel booked, table booked, visit enjoyed. An excellent experience as always with my favourite Bklyn Masala the obvious choice, the amazing completely unique experience ticked all the same boxes it did the first time. So happy to make it one last time but so sad to see it so busy that people had to be turned away, if only things weren't so economically terrible right now. I wish the owners and all the staff the best and hope this is a pause rather than the end. ........... Original Review from 2019: I don't tend to throw around 5* reviews like many people do, I consider a 4* as a solid endorsement of a great meal, visit or service, so here I am giving 5 stars and, if I'm honest, I'd give 6 if I could. Background: I stumbled across The Hip Hop Chip Shop while wandering around Google Maps one day, I'm a local guide, general nerd, food fan etc and, let's face it, the name is great. I saw it, I clicked, I liked what I saw. The problem is I'm in Leeds, The Hip Hop Chip Shop isn't. So a plan was made and today, Sunday the 26th, we travelled over with the sole aim of lunch here. The risk paid off and then some. A warm welcome on arrival from incredibly friendly front of house staff and a really chilled out vibe from the unobtrusive chilled out music. We were seated quickly with menus at a table of our choice and then began the task of selecting from the extensive and varied menu. I went for one if the specials, the curry battered fish with massala chips, raita and mango chutney, a can of D&B and some battered pickles, my dining partner the chilli battered sausage with chips and curry sauce and some chilli onion rings. Wow! Everything was beyond expectations, firstly the service is fast, the portion sizes are incredibly generous and the taste... amazing. Those massala chips are a revelation, the curry fish something I should have had in my life years ago. Battered pickles, life changing. Everything else I tried couldn't be faulted. Every other dish leaving the kitchen also looked amazing. 10 hours later as I write this I'm still full, with food and fond memories, thank you, it was well worth the special trip over the hills.

Delicious vegetarian fish! Vegetarian options are a bit smaller than the classic ones, but generally cool. We recommend.

Vegan fish is ok but it's heavily overpriced for the portion size and they add service charge on top. Disappointed in the vegan sausages which were mushy inside - a meat alternative would be better. Disappointing for the price.

A nice twist on traditional fish and chips.

We ate delicious and very hearty fish and chips. The staff is very pleasant.

Not the best fish and chips by a long shot but it’s a cool venue and I like the concept - I’d also like to give the sandwiches a chance as they were unable to make anything with the corn rolls when we visited.

Picked up a takeaway. Food is amazing. Big portions. Shared a fish and chips.

Good location and a “different” setup. It was ok, but expensive for what it is. Definitely not in my top 5 chippies in the city but for a different experience it’s worth it. Overall I would go again with friends for the “experience” but if you are after good fish and chips there are defiantly better and cheaper in options in town. I’d recommend Tony’s if you are after a chippy.

Tried their food first time at Christmas market yesterday. It was yum, succulent fresh fish with onion gravy and twice cooked perfect chips. I was completely satisfied and the speed of service was remarkable! They were so fast and yet tasty. I'm coming back for more next weekend.

Delicious fish and chips in a cool place

Come here today I had to marsala fish and Bombay chips with curry sauce food was amazing and the service excellent I even left with a Bennie hat as a souvenir. Definitely will be coming again when I'm in Manchester

Coming from NYC I must say that I loved this place atmosphere, music and the vibe. My first time here and i loved the food and cool staff. Highly recommended.

It's good but not great. Everything is done well but nothing stood out. I had fish & chips, mushy pea fritters & curry sauce. I also thought it was a bit overpriced & there is a discretionary service charge which I didn't mind paying. Overall, I felt a bit underwhelmed given all the hype surrounding the place but good luck to an independent business which I always try to support.

Really looking forward to it; really disappointed. Got some takeaway chips and butties from here on a Saturday evening having recently moved nearby. Nice enough atmosphere, friendly staff and not very busy at all. The food however was a total let down. Having previously heard good things, the chips tasted exactly as though they'd been blanched the day before and left out at room temperature before cooking, and the bread on the sandwiches had quite clearly been replaced with oven bottom muffins from the co-op across the street. While the masala fish itself was fine, it's hardly worth the £12 outlay for something which so little effort had been put into. Good music, probably won't go back again nor recommend.

Been here a few times and it’s always been excellent. The dine-in experience is definitely better than what you’ll get at the food truck they occasionally do. Better portion size for your money.

I had my first fish & chips ever at this place and ever since, it has been the absolute reference for me whenever I try a new place.

Hip hop chip shop While in Ancoats, Manchester looking for something to eat, I came across this fish shop with beats and rhymes playing in the background. In an area of American pizza joints and Mediterranean tapas restaurants which didn’t take my fancy this place stood out. The Masala fish with its curry batter, and crispy, spiced, chunky chips, mango chutney and raita dips was banging. Washed down with a pint of Kronenbourg 1664 wheat beer. Honestly. Well worth it.

Je n'ai jamais mangé un aussi bon fish and chips de ma vie , le poisson cuit à la perfection,les frites délicieuses, la purée de petits pois un régal et la petite sauce tartare sublime, tout cela sans se ruiner !!!!! Bravo et merci encore pour ce moment suspendu.

I wondered how often you change the frying oil. The chips had drawn incredible oil, it was very tasteless. I couldn't be sure of the freshness of the fish as well. And it was sad that you used different types of fish. I wasn't sure which fish it was. I came with great expectations but it was a plate that definitely didn't deserve this price.

Vivir a 250 millas de distancia significaba que teníamos que esperar nuestro tiempo antes de poder visitar el HHCS. ¡Bueno, hoy, lo hicimos! ¿Valió la pena esperar? Primero, la ubicación. Casi podrías pasar por aquí y perdértelo, y por dentro está lleno de decoración y sonidos Hip hop, se ve realmente genial y muy adecuado. Acogedor y divertido. Nos sentamos afuera, nuestros cuatro pequeños y nosotros, y ordenamos. El increíble servicio proporcionado hecho es bienvenido y realmente valorado. Teníamos... El Brooklyn Masala fish and chips, el Meat Junkie, algunas patatas fritas cursis, y algunos jalapeños rebozados. Me recomendaron una nueva cerveza, así que tenía eso, y los niños tenían una variedad de refrescos. La comida llegó caliente y fresca minutos después, y como podéis ver en las fotos que la acompañan, se veía increíble. En resumen, todo era perfecto. La masa estaba crujiente y muy sabrosa, y no era nada grasosa, los jalapeños fritos eran una revelación, y la piel en trozos de patatas fritas eran los mejores de todos! Tuvimos una gran noche aquí, fuimos a cenar y tuvimos la ventaja adicional de ver la semifinal de la Eurocopa 2024 entre Inglaterra y los Países Bajos. No es un restaurante enorme, pero la comida era buena y también el ambiente. Buena comida y buena compañía ¿qué más se puede querer y tampoco demasiado caro.

Quirky fish and chips shop. The food was nice with very good curry sauce. There looked to be a good beer selection although didn’t try it out this time.

Came here on Saturday with my partner after he asked to “go for fish and chips”, and I’d heard so many good things about this place we had to give it a try. It lived up to every expectation and more so! Very kind, cool and wonderful staff. The food is exceptional and they have a great selection of worldwide beers and ciders as well as spirits/ cocktails. As well as the vibe being very relaxed and fun, if you’re into hip hop it’s great for any hip hop head wanting to hear a mixture of UK/ US and classic hip hop tunes whilst you scran. Shout out to the blonde guy who was serving us because he really went all out and even set up a table for us outside when we asked to sit in the sun and all the other tables were taken :) 6/5 stars! ⭐️

What a fabulous little chip shop, 1st time here and it ticked all boxes...had a medium fish/chip mushy peas and gravy and all cooked to perfection..could not fault it, excellent friendly staff..a treat from my son and he comes here often.

Nice little music-themed venue in the Northern Quarter. We arrived at 01:30 pm and had two portions of fish and chips (huge!!! and not greasy), a medium beer and a cider. Total 46 pounds. Very friendly staff (a constant in Manchester).

Very good service from the staff. The portion size is generous but I would say that the quality of food is average. We tried the normal fish & chips, curry batter fish & chilli battered onion rings.

They had a food truck at Carlton Club and it was quite busy but there was good management: an actual queue and those who have paid were given something to let them know that their order was ready. I ordered Medium Fish & Chips with mushy peas for £10. The fish and chips were fresh and weren't greasy. The batter on the fish and the chips themselves were seasoned well. I enjoyed my lunch under the lovely sun. Thank you!

Absolutely awesome place. Hip Hop junkies heaven. Full of Hip Hop memoribillia, great choice of beers/drinks and cant say enough how good the Fish N Chips are. Beautiful. Im from Bradford where Fish n Chips is award winning and it beat ours, my friend flew in from Texas and was blown away by the food. Cant wait to visit again and catch a DJ set or performance next time.

This place has it all. From the amazing service to the stunning food, the lady who served us was a dream everything was brought with a smile and nothing was too much trouble The deep fried caramel fredo with ice cream was amazing and such a nice touch. Love coming here can’t wait to come again

What a great place this is. As soon as I entered I was welcomed by staff. It’s actually a bar as well so the atmosphere added to the excitement of receiving my food. I had the masala fish and chips cheese and meat gravy… WOW everything was excellent. Probably the best chippy I’ve ever had. The fish was so meaty.

Can't believe I've never noticed this fish and chips restaurant before, and it's in the middle of Ancoats! Got to continue spreading the good words of this shop 👏 👏 👏 Ordered the Feastie Boys, Brooklyn Masala Butty, served with chunky skin-on chips. They absolutely outperformed and set the bar high in terms of what people expect from fish and chips restaurants. Genuinely find the food tasting fabulous, and the portion is BANG ON! They've done an impeccable job to do fish and chips properly! That's how joyful and positive energy can be passed on from food that is made the right way.

I’ve got fish and chips from this place twice now…and really hoped it would be better. But it’s very greasy and the chips have zero flavour to them. If you’re after a traditional fish and chips then there’s much better places. I’ll stick to Tony’s in ancoats

Lovely quirky place good choice for vegetarian and vegans food was lovely and hot. The lady that greeted us as we came in was welcoming and friendly lovely smile .myself and son enjoyed our food.it was lovely and clean.about 2 weeks ago it was nice area too

The vibes were excellent, but I just ate so much oil that if I so much as look at a candle, I will probably explode. Worth it.

This is a really unique place to have fish and chips! The staff are nice too! It's very cool with the music and decor, but the fish and chips isn't really great for the amount you pay. The chips were of various sizes so some were crispy and some weren't cooked properly and the fish portion was very small for £14. The fish was very oily and the batter wasnt great and oily too. I'd stick with a fish and chip chippy if you want amazing food, but come here if you want a different vibe and version!

Finally got to visit after following on insta since their market days. I was not disappointed! The Brklyn Masala Fish, a take on fish, chips and curry, was incredible. We visited with our one year old daughter and I was pleasantly surprised to find they had a high chair and kids menu. The staff were fab and I loved the atmosphere.

My favorite spot in the city centre, fish and chips are spot on, the decor is everything you expect from a place named the hip hop chip shop, there’s always dope music playing and the events held there are always good vibes!

Utterly amazing scran ….Fish n Chips and other funky stuff. Try it - you won’t regret it! Tasty food in a funky environment with some cool tunes and even DJ sessions. Oh, and the guys do amazing with to in the community too. A business with a social conscience and a heart as well as top food and amazing ambiences. What’s not to love? Enjoy … and thank me later!

I found this place around a year ago and never forgot it, I came back to this place after thinking of it for a year haha. Best fish and chips I’ve ever had, that’s a fact. Chill vibe, food is quick, staff are well presented and have nice outfits! Fish is amazing and the fried gerkins, absolutely divine. I will make an appearance again, as it’s well worth a visit. 10/10 for me, creative innovative and relevant, props to the person who created it, extremely well thought out the fish logo is a clever touch. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Love the food here. Usually have a Mrs Fat bottom sandwich but last night had the curry battered fish. I was not disappointed. Kids had the sausage wrapped in bacon. One of their favourites too. Friendly helpful staff and excellent service. We enjoy the 'chill vibes'. We don't live in Manchester, but I wish we did!

The place is small but easy to find, and to be honest a really good surprise! The fish and chips are really good. There is a DJ playing music in the site. The service is super friendly and even if you need recommendations for other activities after dinner, they will give you good tips to enjoy the city. The selection of beers is also good. We ate the traditional Fish and Chips and also the one with Halloumi and bot of them were really tasty.

Visited without a reservation on a Friday lunchtime. We received a warm welcome and was served quickly. Great choice or beers but wine options were very limited. We didn’t have to wait long for drinks or for the food. The food was delicious! It was all fresh, cooked well and tasted amazing. This is our third trip and we’ll be back again in the future for sure. A few people came in for takeaway whilst we were there, which I wasn’t aware they did before the visit, so that’s handy to know.

Great food, great staff and brilliant atmosphere. Not a traditional fish and chip shop (though the fish and chips are the best I've had in Manchester), it's much more than that; a mini gallery of hip hop memorabilia and they're punching well above their weight when it comes to the charitable community projects they support. Go support this unique independent gem of a restaurant.
