The Highwayman - Pub & Carvery in North Hertfordshire

We went here for my husbands 60th birthday meal. The service was great and the food was amazing. All staff were friendly and attentive. Kerry-Anne was excellent. Well done to everyone we will be returning.

Service was pleasant enough, but the food and drink were awful. Fish and chips was off the menu! beef and ale pie was over done, the pastry was almost burned; coffee machine was broken, so no coffee, and the tea was unbelievable weak... Don't think we'll go there again, and wouldn't recommend.

There is a barman Alfie. He has a great temperament and attitude. He always has time to have a chat. Great advert for the pub. Well done Alfie

Lovely place with a beautiful carvery, refreshing drinks and relaxing atmosphere

Been a few times,as normal nice carvery ,good price ,got there as opened so everything nice and fresh,meat and veg all cooked very well,especially roast potatoes ..gluten-free gravy also made.. Friendly service and beer/wine prices not to bad either … 3 size choices so any appetite taken care of… Also plenty of other meal choice’s available.. And for those coming from Stevenage or letchworth bus(55)stops right outside ,so handy if fancy a drink or don’t drive 🍺😎

Our first visit to The Highwayman Pub. And to be honest, my wife and I were pleasantly surprised. The bar staff were very talkative and smiling, after they explained how we pay and order our food. I was very impressed. The chef serving the the was very helpful and pleasant to talk to. I can only say the food was cooked and prepared to perfection. Thank you for a very pleasant evening.

Having a bad experience last time we visited, thought we'd give it another chance. However you never get a second chance to make a first impression. £7 carvery was reflected in the standard of the food, service was beyond poor and the place was like a farm yard. We won't be going back again, it's not about providing quality food it's about profit.

Visited mid week, crispiest potatoes we have had at a carvery. Will definitely be visiting again!

We arrived to the pub as a table of 14 and asked Alfie behind the bar if this was possible, Alfie was wonderful and set the table up at short notice and was very welcoming and positive and served us quickly even though he was the only one behind the bar and serving tables. The food was lovely and the drinks flowed! Was lovely to have a excellent experience with family we have not seen in a very long time. Thankyou especially to Alfie for making our experience a 10 out of 10. We will be returning very soon!

The manager/owner was very attentive. I myself am immunosuppressed and made sure that we were sat away from people and still took the time to come to our table and ask if we needed drinks and if we need anything. Will definitely be returning. Would definitely recommend.

I went for the first time today and tried the carvery, disappointed in the meat portions and selection of vegetables there was no basics like peas and carrots but you could have parsnips Brussels sprouts or red cabbage which I associate with christmas but loved the onion gravy.

The Highwayman has very much improved. Food was outstanding, the waiting stuff were cheerful and polite and the staff behind the bar were helpful and accommodating..

Food okay,but clearly the staff are unhappy and it's clear on they're faces.Again the food was okay,but the carvery guy looked like he had recently done a stint at HMP (Not that I disrespect that! No way) .. but this guy well,go see for yourself 😂

We have been going to The Highway Man for years! The food is excellent and the service is incredible. Both Owen and Peter provide a friendly and welcoming atmosphere!

Large family gathering, which was well catered for. But we're didn't taste the food at all and they didn't have enough staff, which was not their fault but it was very slow. 15 of us the first 4 had finished their meal before the last of us got our food.

The food was good, well done to the chef and his team, the carvery was fabulous. Sadly, the area where we were seated was horrendous! Carpets and chairs were disgusting! Carpets were sticky and filthy. Fabric seats were full of stains. Very off putting. The table was sticky but it might have been the cleaning spray that is used as it was the same after it was wiped down. On the upside, good parking, great staff and the food was good 😉

Decided to go for food mid week, booked table online forb7pm Decided to go early for some pre drinks, when ready for our meal found carvery had been cleared away and was only 6pm

This is a very long-deserved review. I've been coming to this pub for years with my family, including my 2 year old niece, and everytime without fail our experience is amazing. The staff truly make this place, they go above and beyond, by very accommodating even with awkward food requests, and being such fun characters with my niece (even when she's gone into hyper mode). 5 stars to the restaurant and 5 stars to each and every staff member. Thank-you!

Great menu. Something for everyone. Good family atmosphere too. I had the carvery and it was excellent and plenty hot choice of veg etc.

We booked on the day when we arrived the staff Alfie and Sam were lovely the vegetables were cooked to perfection

First visit since end of lockdown. Pleasantly surprised by cleanliness, service prompt and efficient. New menu varied. Food served hot and well cooked. Good value. Impressed and will come again.

Always good value but exceptionally so as took Grandchildren there and Kids Eat Free in the school holidays so 2 adults, 2 kids meals with adults drinks came to only £23.48

At the moment it’s not bad but management and staff could be changed at any time. Overall, it’s a nice place to go if everywhere else in Stevenage is full.

Food was very poor this time round. Asked for a side salad with food and all it was just lettuce leaves. That's not a side salad. Should have tomatoes, cucumber and onion.

Impromptu stop of for lunch. Ended up with oneof the best carvery dinners I have had locally for many years!

What a aboslute fabulous place . Very warm welcome from moment walking in , very friendly staff and and a great atmospher. The servers were amazing couldnt do enough for us. We had carvery which i was upset there was no beef ( i dont eat turkey ) the manager didnt leave me upset he offerd me different meat and left me very happy . The food was amazing cooked perfectly left with a very happy tummy. I would recomend this place in a heartbeat will go back again in a flash the whole team is a credit to the company !

Me and my partner went in for lunch today (8th July) and it was beautiful. Starters came out perfectly done and the garlic mushrooms were spot on! My partner ordered the stake - now normally they are hit and miss but today's was perfectly cooked to the medium rare and super tender bursting with flavour. Even tanks to Jack the chef was in order which our waiter passed the message on. The service from Victoria was spot on and each time we went up to the bar she could not be more helpful. The manager was cracking jokes and really helped make a wonderful lunch even better. Thank you!

Ate here Friday 28th June for a surprise birthday there was 9 of us 7 adults and 2 children kitchen finishes at 8pm but they were kind enough to keep the kitchen open for us till we had all ordered our meal ranging from scampi and chips , fish and chips ale pie with mash or chips mac and cheese breaded mushroom and haloumi fries lovely food well cooked and well presented and everyone cleared there plates service was great absolutely lovely manager nothing was to much for him even threw in a chocolate fudge cake for the birthday girl was able to use my blue light card so 15% off the bill as well what's not to like would defo eat here again great prices for food plenty to choose from on the menu great customer service all round

Food was amazing and very filling service was great although when we arrived the barman was also the man who was seating you and basically a one man band bless him but he did an amazing job! When clearing our tables they were great and understanding when one of the kids was still eating. Only downfall is they stuck all the big tables near each other but it wasnt too busy or loud so that was fine. I didnt have any small children in the group but its so sad they got rid of the kids play section as it was one of the reasons this was my favourite pub when i lived nearby which is why i come whenever i visit

We visited the Highwayman this afternoon. I regularly take my team to eat out and this place made us feel so welcoming. I spoke to the new chef, Steve and he was so polite and friendly. Danny the manager came to check on us and made sure we had everything we needed. A great improvement from the last manager. I shall be coming back with my colleagues more frequently. Superb place

Came here for Sunday dinner with the family, food was lovely and fresh and hot. The gammon was a firm favourite! Our waitress Chloe was lovely and made sure we had everything we needed.

Came for lunch with my parents. They love it here and go regularly. We all enjoyed, the Yorkshire puddings are huge and the meats tasted great. I had beef and gammon. Would recommend and return in the future. The prices are also great and the staff were friendly.

Visited again recently after a long time and can’t wait to visit again. The staff were all really friendly.. Our food was delicious so we are planning to visit again soon so we can try the carvery. Give it another try and hopefully you will enjoy it as much as we did.

Parsnips were very hard, pizza looked and tasted undercooked, yorkies were burned and so were the toasties, mash was good, coliflour cheese was really good, the meat was really good as well. The staff were very kind and the service was quick

Had the Texas jack burger . I was disappointed with the portion size ,the quality of the bun and the lack of bacon . My son had the pizza from the children's menu and it was a microwave pizza that was rock hard and had some weird salsa in it, he only had one bite .Would not recommend😕. On the pluss side ,the staff seem to have good customer service skills. Ps get some brioche buns add more chips and more onion rings 👌

Have visited here a couple times. It's a lovely pub in a countryside setting. Good food which is reasonably priced, friendly staff, in a nice relaxed atmosphere. A special thank you to Chole who served us, she was helpful, polite and made sure we had everything we needed. Will definitely return!

Popped in paid for carvery plus drinks price was good but the meat was very dry turkey didn't taste very good veg uncooked got home having a bad stomach ache not feeling to good

Food disappointing and returned one meal as it came with a rock hard naan and not of nice curry. Manager swapped very quickly though with no fuss. Our other meal so-so. Carvery meal looked OK but was put off by drying, curled-up veg that had been under the heat lamps too long. Bar service prompt and helpful but quite empty. Shame as it used to be a good value and buzzing place to go. State of decoration good. As plus it has its own pool and darts areas though.

Used to come here years ago but got bad. Heard it was under new management and now myself and mum are regulars. The carvery is delishous and for 7.99 at lunch is a bargain. We enjoy coming here for food now!

Popped into here for a quick bite, staff really polite and the food is good, Didn’t have a carvery this time as had one before, and it’s so good, plenty of it if you like big meals at a good price. Also if you have a blue light card you get 20% off.

Cheap, quick pub food, nothing to complain about, you get what you pay for every time. Carvery mid week is good and very well priced too.

First time visiting in a couple of years as things weren't great before but what a turn around. Great food, immaculately clean, quick service and really helpful staff. Will be back soon!

I wouldn’t normally leave a review but green king have let this place down ! The poor man who I believe is the manager has no control over the booking system in the building and on a Sunday we had been told that we could only have our table for 1 hour 15 minutes. This is hectic for staff to control ! The food was basic nothing to shout about , but you get what you pay for as it’s very cheap food! The glasses we were given to drink out of were so water stained we couldn’t seen through them ! There is no facility for check backs in place which is something that should be done ! Allergy’s were not asked at any point which again should be asked . Our table was sticky and not cleaned and overall the place looks very worn down !

This is a very welcoming place , the staff are very friendly and helpful, the food is always spot on and tasteful. The Sunday roast is the best in the area and great value for money.

Come in here for an all day breakfast and it was amazing, all staff were very kind and helpful.

Just back from a lovely lunch at The Highwayman. The staff were friendly and welcoming and the food was great as always and the prices are good. We all had the carvery. Never been disappointed when we have been here and today was no exception.

Had a nice carvery here with the family on a Saturday. Food was hot which is always good, veggies were fresh and plenty of choice. Service was good since changing hands. No complaints.

We went on Christmas day and what a pleasant experience we had. We arrived early and got seated straight away. We were waiting on the rest of the party to arrive and was told not to stress, we had loads of time. Starters came out and were lovely and the carvery Christmas dinner was lovely. Desserts were brought out and although was too stuffed to eat them, we nibbled and they were up to standard too. Whilst we said after last years issues we wouldn't go out again, we are so glad we did. The manager was so attentive and was looking after the whole restaurant without any fuss. The staff were happy and this showed with the service they had provided. Thank you for not ruining our day! Well done guys you did a great job.. :)
