My partner and I had a wonderful evening here. Friendly, helpful, pro-active staff. More than happy to accommodate and help with allergens. Would highly recommend ! Food delicious and lots of good options.

The cheese soufflé was light, yet the molten cheddar sauce packed a rich, savoury punch. Naturally, the pie, paired with beans and my requested chips instead of mash, hit the spot and was wonderfully comforting. The chalk stream trout, with its crisp skin and tender layers, melted at the touch of a fork, served with a creamy sauce and a medley of mashed potato and kale. The sauce was so good, it begged for bread (which was kindly added on the house). But the star of the evening was the pork ribeye from the specials, served with rich gravy and, unexpectedly, charred cabbage – an absolute delight. For dessert, the pistachio soufflé was a light, airy finish – satisfying but still leaving enough room for the next course!

Outstanding - We were a group of 10 with 4 kids. We were looked after brilliantly - service was excellent. Food very good and had two bottles of lovely red. Highly recommend.

Looks great but a real shame about all the plastic flowers. Shouldn't have to ask for your pint to be topped up. Real ale was good.

A beautiful place to eat and drink, lots of choice on the menu. If you're lucky there may be a parking spot on the street outside in the evening. Definitely recommend.

Love this restaurant, we always enjoy our lunch here! Today the service was brilliant, Rhea was excellent, nothing was too much trouble for her 😊 and she went out of her way to serve us! Highly recommend!

Very popular quiz night on a Wednesday

Excellent food and service. Reservations are recommended as it's rightly very popular. The fish soup and various Souffles are our favourite dishes.

What a find ! If I had known about this place I would definitely have come sooner ! The atmosphere is friendly. The decor is superb and cosy with stylish comfort. The food was divine 😋 pistachio souffle o.m.g ! Fresh trout, melty steak it goes on. The service however was the absolute best that I have experienced in a very long time. Hats off to The lovely team you made our visit extra special. I can't wait to return soon 🙏😁✨️

A lovely Sunday lunch, beautiful venue. Lovely staff. Would just prefer slightly bigger portions with our puds! The chocolate torte was yum but on the smaller side for us choccy lovers! However, having said that, as we had mains, our desserts were only £3 each, which was great value. Also the roasties could have been a bit darker in colour and crisper. But we will definitely come again to try more.

Lovely place food really good and very reasonable, dog friendly and one of the barmen spoiled our little french bulldog have the dressed crab!

Our waitress was a little over zealous with us and didn't give us much space. I ordered the crab and it was incredibly salty. I think this place is overpriced.

We went back to the Highwayman on Saturday afternoon having been there before a few months ago, it was my brother in law’s birthday celebration. The food was fairly decent and the service was also fair. We had two gluten intolerant children with us and things were very confusing with that and made the children really uncomfortable as the staff genuinely didn't understand the severity of them consuming gluten, that side of things was very lacklustre. When it came to the bill, having already paid a fairly large deposit we were quite horrified to get a bill of circa £600, once we went through the bill we noticed we had been overcharged £213 for 6 bottles of Prosecco we hadn't had, very strange and quite alarming. When we questioned the bill and the bottles of Prosecco there was absolutely no apology and it was all treated like a big joke , I forgot to mention the first time we came here they overcharged us to the tune of £150 but liked the place and wanted to give it a second go. Very disappointing and extremely annoying as we were meeting friends for drinks and messing around with the bill made us so late and our friends left. We decided today because of the attitude of the staff and the bad experience we wouldn't go back to the Highwayman. Extremely expensive for what it is and overcharging a table of 11 twice is very sloppy and unprofessional and underhand.

This stunning venue was Rosie and Josh's wedding reception in October. Filled with beautiful autumnal colours it didn't disappoint. The staff were amazing and very accommodating. The food was insane !!! The chef created a wonderful vegan meal for me. I would definitely go back with hubby in tow. In the meantime I look forward to any future couples marrying at this lovely venue.

Outstanding experience, at the Highwayman for lunch today, the food surpassed expectations and was fantastic, atmosphere and decor was delightful, and what really made it a great experience was the amazing service from Rhea, she was so professional, charming and helpful. Happy to have found this gem, will be bringing friends next time to show them!

After a very muddy and wet hike around Ashridge woods my wife and I managed to find a gem of a restaurant. Although we could of done with a shower and a change of clothes, we were fortunate enough to get a table. If you want good British food at reasonable prices this is the place. Fish soup starters, lamb and pork for mains and souffle for dessert (see menu for full details), the food and accompanying drinks were very good. Our only quibble, coffee liquor was not the best. But happy enough to give 5 stars 🌟 .

Today we just didn’t fancy cooking, so as we were driving through Berkhamsted we just parked up and picked the first pub we passed. OMG what a gem!!! The staff are amazing and helpful the food is to die for. And I am speechless with the desserts. We were so impressed we booked there and then to come back!!!

We visited on Valentines evening when it was really busy. However every aspect of our dinner was amazing. We really couldn't fault anything! Front of house greeted us and we were quickly seated. Our waitress was brilliant - every attentive. The food was of really top rank London restuarant quality. Drinks great too. Love the decor and atmosphere. Not bad value either - you'd pay twice as much in London.

Service was a little slow but it was a busy Saturday night and the food was incredible. It far exceeds “gastro pub” food. Can’t wait to return.

Dropped in Sunday after a decent fog walk with a group of friends. For a big place gives off a very warm and cosy vibe. A lot of people agree, very busy, if going for food absolutely must book. Good beer and wine selection, didn't have food but looks good. See photo.

I could wax lyrical about this place, or simply say -- you've got to try the food and enjoy the service. Simply stunning Chateaubriand, perfectly cooked, and sublime gorgeous flavour. This place was busy, two days until Christmas, yet the staff were calm, efficient, and phenomenal. Restaurant food, cooked well, served with a smile, in a friendly atmosphere.

Highly recommended. Great food, friendly service, reasonably priced. Very busy so book ahead for a table. Quite noisy.

Dined here for our annual Christmas family get together. It was overall a very nice experience. Food very nice and service was great. Only downside for us was fighting our way through the barking dogs in the bar area to get to our table. Thankful the restaurant is dog free. Parking is available behind the pub and in the multi storey car park.

Went for 'Set Menu' as a late lunch at 2pm and it was very nice. Friendly servers, nice buzz in the restaurant, and food very tasty indeed ~ not a heap, like cheaper eateries might do, and well presented on good quality plates. The napkins are proper cloth ones, and the wine my wife chose was delicious ! Thoroughly recommend the excellent value of the Set Menu. Nov 2023 : The lure of a FREE glass of Prosecco (as a marketting Birthday treat) was taken up and we weren't disappointed again. Still gorgeous food from "A la Carte" menu, and the wine was very decent too. Deserts were beautiful and complemented the main course. Servers were very attentive and extremely pleasant, with helpful guidance too. Will definitely be back !

After a re-visit when I shared my view of poor service, it has seem it was that single event. Service was good and helpfull. Food was good, and atmosphere pleasant. Am glad we took on a re-visit. Things to improve more space for dogs.

We are regulars at the pub, and it’s always 5⭐️ every visit 🥰 We also held our wedding reception here in September and I cannot fault one single thing. The entire team were amazing from start to finish and made our entire day seemless, beautiful all while serving 80+ guests with big smiles and love! Every single guest was blown away by the food & service. Can’t recommend this place enough. It will now always have a special place in our hearts 🥹🫶🏻

I was on a narrowboat holiday with friends and had the good fortune to visit this classy brasserie. We had a fantastic evening, service and ambience were first class. Food was amazing and the duck leg on bean cassoulet with chorizo was out of this world. I would highly recommend visiting and am sorry that I live too far away to be unable to make this a regular habitat.

Lovely ambiance and drinks, however the value for money of the vegetarian dish I ordered left a lot to be desired 😩 The harissa aubergine main sounded delicious on the menu, but alas what I received upon ordering, I can only describe as a gut punch of disappointment for a £15 main… a measly half of a singular aubergine, with five lonely 3cm x 3cm x 3cm cubes of butternut squash arranged in a wide circumference around the aubergine 🍆 This could of easily been a small starter if the garnishes were arranged in a tighter formation, yet somehow it was decided that this petite serving, if laid out across the plate, was deemed acceptable as a substantial £15 main. Everything else was delicious , so it is really only this dish which put a downer on my meal. Please up the vegetarian food. Just because it is a plant based meal, it doesn’t have to be diet food.

The quality of the service right from the front of house to our servers was excellent. Our food was great tasting and hot. One of our party pointed out that there could be more choice but the seven different meals that came to the table all looked lovely and my steak this time was fantastic. Will go back just for the service. We'll done and thanks for looking after our birthday boy.

One of the most delicious meals out we've had in a while. Every course excellent but the beef short rib and the lamb roulade really were stand out!! Really flavourful and perfectly cooked meat.

A lovely clean restaurant. From outside it doesn't look the biggest but once inside it opens up into a large dining area. Staff were friendly and prompt with service. The food was very good, great to look at and even better to eat. All in all a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon had by all. Would recommend a visit.

What a great experience! We have had many good pub roast dinners in the last 8 years in the UK - this one ranks as the best. All 5 of us had roast beef and all 5 of us demolished our food! An absolutely brilliant cut of beef, done beautifully pink with all the trimmings! 😋 We had a beer and bottle of Pinot Noir which was equally delicious!🍷 The service didn’t match the quality of the food but that didn’t detract from an amazing lunch! I would highlight recommend this brassiere/pub for a Sunday lunch!

We’ve eaten here several times and are always very happy with the quality and choice of food. The cheese soufflé , braised short beef ribs and pistachio soufflé with chocolate ice cream were all excellent. It’s relaxed and comfortable and our two (well behaved!) dogs are always welcome too.

Delicious and well presented food combined with friendly service and nice atmosphere. We stopped here based on past reviews whilst headed back to the train from a day out walk and were rewarded. All of us enjoyed our meals and left smiling and sated. I would certainly return when in the area.

A stunning restaurant situated in the heart of the town. The decor is absolutely stunning. Our waiter was a beautifully charming man who made our lunch really enjoyable. The food was delicious & overall a really nice place.

Had lunch here when visiting from London. Very friendly staff and lovely brasserie area. 2 of us had the sea bream and our daughter had a vegan tagine- all delicious. The waitress was very helpful with suggestions regarding the vegan options.

wow, never been disappointed with a meal here. Also do really nice cocktails so make sure you don't drive here. Not the cheapest of places but you do get the value in the quality of food you have.

Love this restaurant in Berkhamsted. Food was delicious, atmosphere good and staff pleasant and attentive. Good choice from the menu, there were 3 adults in our party, all chose different mains and all were well cooked. Our granddaughter ate from the children's three course menu and finished it all. Definitely recommend.

A great choice of restaurant for us. 10 people ranging from 82 to 10 and we all had excellent food, service and drink. Wine a little pricey but it is Berko.

Visited last night with my husband for dinner. We sat in the bar area for a cocktail first, which had a lovely atmosphere, buzzy and friendly. Service was swift behind the bar which lots of staff. Then headed downstairs for dinner when our table was ready. Highly recommend booking in advance as it was a full house. Really nice setting for dinner, service was great and food delicious. Everything came out in a timely manner despite it being so busy. See pictures attached. We had a lovely bottle of wine, 3 courses and a cheese board. My only gripe was that was portions are on the small side and my husband wasn't full. Starters were exceptionally small for the price. Highly recommend for dinner and or drinks.
