The Highwayman in Dacorum

After a very muddy and wet hike around Ashridge woods my wife and I managed to find a gem of a restaurant. Although we could of done with a shower and a change of clothes, we were fortunate enough to get a table. If you want good British food at reasonable prices this is the place. Fish soup starters, lamb and pork for mains and souffle for dessert (see menu for full details), the food and accompanying drinks were very good. Our only quibble, coffee liquor was not the best. But happy enough to give 5 stars 🌟 .

Today we just didn’t fancy cooking, so as we were driving through Berkhamsted we just parked up and picked the first pub we passed. OMG what a gem!!! The staff are amazing and helpful the food is to die for. And I am speechless with the desserts. We were so impressed we booked there and then to come back!!!

Excellent Sunday lunch in a very pleasant atmosphere

We visited on Valentines evening when it was really busy. However every aspect of our dinner was amazing. We really couldn't fault anything! Front of house greeted us and we were quickly seated. Our waitress was brilliant - every attentive. The food was of really top rank London restuarant quality. Drinks great too. Love the decor and atmosphere. Not bad value either - you'd pay twice as much in London.

Service was a little slow but it was a busy Saturday night and the food was incredible. It far exceeds “gastro pub” food. Can’t wait to return.

We enjoyed a fantastic meal here with family. Everything was excellent. I particularly enjoyed the cheese souffle. Wine also fabulous.

Dropped in Sunday after a decent fog walk with a group of friends. For a big place gives off a very warm and cosy vibe. A lot of people agree, very busy, if going for food absolutely must book. Good beer and wine selection, didn't have food but looks good. See photo.

I could wax lyrical about this place, or simply say -- you've got to try the food and enjoy the service. Simply stunning Chateaubriand, perfectly cooked, and sublime gorgeous flavour. This place was busy, two days until Christmas, yet the staff were calm, efficient, and phenomenal. Restaurant food, cooked well, served with a smile, in a friendly atmosphere.

Highly recommended. Great food, friendly service, reasonably priced. Very busy so book ahead for a table. Quite noisy.

Dined here for our annual Christmas family get together. It was overall a very nice experience. Food very nice and service was great. Only downside for us was fighting our way through the barking dogs in the bar area to get to our table. Thankful the restaurant is dog free. Parking is available behind the pub and in the multi storey car park.

Went for 'Set Menu' as a late lunch at 2pm and it was very nice. Friendly servers, nice buzz in the restaurant, and food very tasty indeed ~ not a heap, like cheaper eateries might do, and well presented on good quality plates. The napkins are proper cloth ones, and the wine my wife chose was delicious ! Thoroughly recommend the excellent value of the Set Menu. Nov 2023 : The lure of a FREE glass of Prosecco (as a marketting Birthday treat) was taken up and we weren't disappointed again. Still gorgeous food from "A la Carte" menu, and the wine was very decent too. Deserts were beautiful and complemented the main course. Servers were very attentive and extremely pleasant, with helpful guidance too. Will definitely be back !

After a re-visit when I shared my view of poor service, it has seem it was that single event. Service was good and helpfull. Food was good, and atmosphere pleasant. Am glad we took on a re-visit. Things to improve more space for dogs.

We are regulars at the pub, and it’s always 5⭐️ every visit 🥰 We also held our wedding reception here in September and I cannot fault one single thing. The entire team were amazing from start to finish and made our entire day seemless, beautiful all while serving 80+ guests with big smiles and love! Every single guest was blown away by the food & service. Can’t recommend this place enough. It will now always have a special place in our hearts 🥹🫶🏻

I was on a narrowboat holiday with friends and had the good fortune to visit this classy brasserie. We had a fantastic evening, service and ambience were first class. Food was amazing and the duck leg on bean cassoulet with chorizo was out of this world. I would highly recommend visiting and am sorry that I live too far away to be unable to make this a regular habitat.

Lovely ambiance and drinks, however the value for money of the vegetarian dish I ordered left a lot to be desired 😩 The harissa aubergine main sounded delicious on the menu, but alas what I received upon ordering, I can only describe as a gut punch of disappointment for a £15 main… a measly half of a singular aubergine, with five lonely 3cm x 3cm x 3cm cubes of butternut squash arranged in a wide circumference around the aubergine 🍆 This could of easily been a small starter if the garnishes were arranged in a tighter formation, yet somehow it was decided that this petite serving, if laid out across the plate, was deemed acceptable as a substantial £15 main. Everything else was delicious , so it is really only this dish which put a downer on my meal. Please up the vegetarian food. Just because it is a plant based meal, it doesn’t have to be diet food.

The quality of the service right from the front of house to our servers was excellent. Our food was great tasting and hot. One of our party pointed out that there could be more choice but the seven different meals that came to the table all looked lovely and my steak this time was fantastic. Will go back just for the service. We'll done and thanks for looking after our birthday boy.

One of the most delicious meals out we've had in a while. Every course excellent but the beef short rib and the lamb roulade really were stand out!! Really flavourful and perfectly cooked meat.

Really lovely pub, staff very friendly. Nice, relaxed atmosphere. Dog friendly in the bar area. I had a bar snack which was yummy and the food menu looked incredible.

A lovely clean restaurant. From outside it doesn't look the biggest but once inside it opens up into a large dining area. Staff were friendly and prompt with service. The food was very good, great to look at and even better to eat. All in all a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon had by all. Would recommend a visit.

What a great experience! We have had many good pub roast dinners in the last 8 years in the UK - this one ranks as the best. All 5 of us had roast beef and all 5 of us demolished our food! An absolutely brilliant cut of beef, done beautifully pink with all the trimmings! 😋 We had a beer and bottle of Pinot Noir which was equally delicious!🍷 The service didn’t match the quality of the food but that didn’t detract from an amazing lunch! I would highlight recommend this brassiere/pub for a Sunday lunch!

We’ve eaten here several times and are always very happy with the quality and choice of food. The cheese soufflé , braised short beef ribs and pistachio soufflé with chocolate ice cream were all excellent. It’s relaxed and comfortable and our two (well behaved!) dogs are always welcome too.

Lovely decour, friendly and helpful staff and brilliant food choices for vegans/vegetarians. Also the puddings and cocktails are lush :) good value and reasonably priced! would definitely recommend for a dinner out in berko :)

Only popped in for a pint and the pub quiz. The pub quiz was hard, so bring plenty of knowledge with you! Nice atmosphere and will come back for food and a proper night out. So far so good

Delicious and well presented food combined with friendly service and nice atmosphere. We stopped here based on past reviews whilst headed back to the train from a day out walk and were rewarded. All of us enjoyed our meals and left smiling and sated. I would certainly return when in the area.

A stunning restaurant situated in the heart of the town. The decor is absolutely stunning. Our waiter was a beautifully charming man who made our lunch really enjoyable. The food was delicious & overall a really nice place.

Had lunch here when visiting from London. Very friendly staff and lovely brasserie area. 2 of us had the sea bream and our daughter had a vegan tagine- all delicious. The waitress was very helpful with suggestions regarding the vegan options.

wow, never been disappointed with a meal here. Also do really nice cocktails so make sure you don't drive here. Not the cheapest of places but you do get the value in the quality of food you have.

Love this restaurant in Berkhamsted. Food was delicious, atmosphere good and staff pleasant and attentive. Good choice from the menu, there were 3 adults in our party, all chose different mains and all were well cooked. Our granddaughter ate from the children's three course menu and finished it all. Definitely recommend.

A great choice of restaurant for us. 10 people ranging from 82 to 10 and we all had excellent food, service and drink. Wine a little pricey but it is Berko.

Visited last night with my husband for dinner. We sat in the bar area for a cocktail first, which had a lovely atmosphere, buzzy and friendly. Service was swift behind the bar which lots of staff. Then headed downstairs for dinner when our table was ready. Highly recommend booking in advance as it was a full house. Really nice setting for dinner, service was great and food delicious. Everything came out in a timely manner despite it being so busy. See pictures attached. We had a lovely bottle of wine, 3 courses and a cheese board. My only gripe was that was portions are on the small side and my husband wasn't full. Starters were exceptionally small for the price. Highly recommend for dinner and or drinks.

I have eaten at the Highwayman numerous times and have frequently experienced good food and good service. Three of us had lunch there today. Whilst the food my colleagues had ordered was good the sausage baguette I ordered had the smallest chipolata I have ever seen - split in two, it didn’t even fill half the baguette. Very disappointing and poor value.

All the trappings of a classic low key pub, perfect for relaxing by the fire after a jaunt in the countryside, but with a really incredible menu. Definitely a cut above with the food but no froofy nonsense. Can't wait to go back.

Part of the Brasserie Blanc chain with a similar menu. The restaurant is lively at the weekends and can be noisy with groups so possibly not an ideal setting for a quiet couples dining experience but certainly great for family and group dining. Couples might prefer weekdays. Nice food from a reassuringly small French themed menu and prepared on site to a high standard. Great classics on offer such as Cheese Soufle, Mediterranean Fish soup and even Escargot! For the less adventurous there's a lovely Beef Burger on offer which is one of my favourites. Look out for the voucher deals too!

Great food and great service. The Sunday roast beef was superb, the appetizers and the desserts magnificent. Truly a well run restaurant worth visiting regularly.

Had a lovely meal of duck a few weeks ago, so decided to book a Sunday roast …. 22/1 big disappointment! The beef was lovely and tender, Yorkshire: fine, gravy: fine, however, thereafter, the roasties were tasteless, and looked like they were partially cooked the day before and then deep fried to crisp up on the day. The vegetables, although cooked well, were so few we felt let down, and left still hungry. With a price of £19 for a roast, ( I would happily pay this if deserved) you might consider a Toby Carvery for real roasties and unlimited vegetables and a more reasonable price of £12

Food was above average but service was great. It is good place to go with your date or office meeting.

Visited on Monday 2nd January ..Very nice staff as regards the food very small portion no side veggies not a cheap meal not sure I would return .My husband had the cod very small portion and one small potato cut up worth the money

Consistently good food, great service and vibe

Great unassuming high street pub that is deceptively large and opens into a lovely restaurant. Have casual drinks upstairs or wander down for dinner. It’s a standard Marco Pierre White chain menu offering but the food is always really well cooked, the service is good and the atmosphere is also really comfortable and welcoming. Nice setting, good drinks and always a good time spent here.

Popped in for a drink yesterday - staff ignored us for 10 mins then served someone else that walked in behind us.

Really glad we made it- definitely enjoyable evening. We didn’t book the table- just walked in (Thursday night), but it was busy. The bar area is so cosy and lovely. We were hosted by Sam ( hope I remember it correctly) - really friendly and welcoming girl. Other guys were really friendly and helpful. Service is good and we got enough attention. Food was delicious: really recommend cheese soufflé and beef. Duck confit was also nice. Saw other dishes and they looked delicious on the plates.

We didn't eat we just went in for a drink. We were offered a table to that was reserved but not until later so the staff were super helpful
