Service was somewhat lacking this morning, the waiter serving was not overly welcoming and disgruntled when we ordered milk alternatives for hot drinks (seemed like it was too much effort to push a few extra buttons on his tablet 🙄). Food and general atmosphere was nice.

Wow what a fantastic afternoon! We hired the function room upstairs for a baby shower of about 20 women. the room itself was stunning, very clean. The music system was easy to connect to via Bluetooth. The lovely toilets next door to the room. Food was superb, everything was warm. We had menu B for catering and included tea coffee which was brilliant. So much of it too! Plenty of food left over that they allowed us to take home easily. Everything was just easy. Wow the service, cannot be faulted. A huge thank you in particular to the kitchen staff, Richard as manager and especially Holly as our waitress. She was very efficient, friendly, calm and couldn’t do enough for us! No problem with the various drink orders , again everything was correct and easy. Holly went above and beyond. Thank you! Have already recommended the Highdown to other friends. Thanks all and see you again soon! Emma

This is my 3rd visit after finding this gem. A beautiful pub/restaurant. Staff are always friendly and welcoming. We arrived for dinner and the meal was stunning. Attentive service and we ended our visit with coffee by the cosy fire and ended up chatting to Richard the manager who kept the fire roaring for us. It really makes a difference to your visit when you meet people who are passionate about giving people a memorable experience. I will definitely be coming back to stay in the hotel next time and enjoy a longer stay here !!

Fabulous service from Katie at the bar. We forgot to book so had a couple of drinks to see if anything came available. We were just about to head home when Katie spotted us by the fire and said she’d just cleaned a table for us. She was so thoughtful and look after our every need throughout our meal. It was super busy and she was rushed off her feet, so we had to give her a special mention. Our food was cooked to perfection as usual, so hats off to the kitchen staff and Chefs too. Thank you all for a great evening.

Stayed here overnight for work and I can honestly say this is one of the best hotels we’ve stayed in for work. The food is outstanding. We had the Sunday roast for dinner and it was delicious. The beef was cooked perfectly and the potatoes were on point. I very rarely finish a meal but I could’ve eaten it twice, it was that good. The breakfast was just as good. It’s not often you get a hotel where the dinner and breakfast are both good. But this hotel has got it. Our room (8) was also fab. So very comfortable. Had a great nights sleep - bathroom was excellent. Great bath tub and good pressure in the shower. The staff are superb. Polite, attentive and very friendly. Lots of smiles all round. Well done to all who work at The Highdown. We will definitely be returning.

My very first visit to Highdown today for a lovely lunch treat with my wonderful neighbours. I am newish to Worthing and so I had no idea what to expect. The drive up to the house was so lovely, it is such an impressive house and it was so interesting to read the full history which was available on arrival. The bar was really buzzy and we received a lovely warm welcome from the young man behind the bar. Phillip showed us to our table and looked after us and and he immediately made us feel unrushed and relaxed, the team were super friendly and helpful with that genuine desire to make sure we had a good time all round. Our lunch & drinks were served in a timely fashion and our mains of fish pie, chicken & ham pie and a chicken breast dish were faultless, beautifully presented and delicious. It was a case of cleared plates all round. I had a mini waffle dessert with honeycomb ice cream served with a coffee which was the perfect size for a lunchtime treat and one of our table had an Irish coffee. There was a warm ambience to the whole place and I cannot wait to return to try the afternoon tea which looked divine. Thank you to everyone at Highdown, we will be back ✅

We've been a few times now for drinks/lunch/dinner as my mother in law lives up the road. We have always had a fabulous experience and happy to say our first hotel stay on the weekend did not disappoint! We had a very friendly and jovial welcome...sorry didn't catch his name but he was a hoot and gave us a much needed laugh after a long day! All of your team on Saturday evening and Sunday morning were friendly, engaging and helpful which is consistent with our previous experiences. The food was great and our room was absolutely lovely. My only (very small) gripe is that each time we come I somehow manage to order a drink you've run out of...Chapel Down, ingredients for an espresso martini, Jura whisky....but the team are always quick to suggest something else! Think this will become our new home away from home when visiting family nearby....thank you!

***The more stunning the location, the worse the service.*** I will do my best to make this review balanced and fair. The restaurant wasn’t overly busy, there were lots of empty tables in the restaurant. So, we have visited 3 Brunning & Price restaurants; The Fox Revived, The Bolney Stage & here, The Highdown. We had promising expectations, based upon our previous experiences at the previous 2 places I have mentioned. I have to say, The Highdown location, venue and accommodation is beautiful. Such a hidden beauty, and we decided to stay the night with our dogs. The service in the restaurant; We entered the restaurant and informed a staff member, “Hello, we have a reservation booked for 6:45pm”, he looked at me blank and confused, and continued with, “Sorry, I thought that was going to go somewhere” he then got his tablet screen and asked for my name. We was taken to our table. - A very awkward and confusing initial encounter/ welcome. The waiter came over, we ordered our wine and it was served within good time. We then waited a fair amount of time to order the starters/mains. Eventually we was asked what we would like and we ordered. Please know, I am not a fussy customer, but there was just no care or attentiveness to the service what so ever. If anything I felt like a slight inconvenience for being there. The food was DELICIOUS, it was served quickly and there was nothing negative to say as far as the food was concerned. AT NO POINT was we asked how our meals were, or if we was enjoying the food. In my experience at other Brunning and Price restaurants this is common practice. The plates were removed, (without asking if we had enjoyed our meal) and desert menus were placed on our table without a single word, without even asking if we actually wanted dessert. We flagged the waiter down to ask for the bill. We was prompted with a machine and asked if we would like to leave a tip, (I did not feel a tip was appropriate for the service we had received so I politely declined) We paid the bill, and left to return to our room. as I stated at the top of this review - it seems to be a common theme, the more stunning the location, the service seems compromised. Almost as if it isn’t necessary. Such a shame. We had such high hopes for this beautiful, secluded, unique restaurant. Will we return? - Not in a hurry. REVIEW UPDATE: At breakfast the next morning (which was delicious) we was approached by the general manager Jon, and wanted to address the review I had written. After we had finished eating Jon showed me around the stunning building some more and wanted to discuss my points raised. He was so attentive and at no point defensive. I really felt my points raised had been listened to, and Jon has offered us a voucher and invited us back to the restaurant to dine again. My dogs even got a little box of treats. I feel that this has been dealt with very well, and I am looking forward to giving The Highdown restaurant the second chance that hopefully it deserves.

Sunday lunch - good meal for 3. Unfortunately the crispy beef salad was presented without toasted cashew nuts, as described. This is the 2nd occasion this happened. We were then presented with a small bowl of "untoasted" cashews. Disappointing. Also, as before, on several previous occasions, drinks ordered at the table took an unacceptable delay, it is quicker by far to order and collect ones own drinks. Sadly these two small points detract greatly from the dining experience. These could and should (as advised on our last visit) be easily resolved.

Beautiful venue but the food is way over priced. Ok quality but could do with a little more finesse. I had the fish pie and it was somewhat lacking, poorly finished, kind of felt like it was fresh out of the microwave and missed the grill to finish. It was our first visit to the Highdown and it is a lovely building and really interesting inside with great rooms full of character. Sadly the meal and service were a real let down. We had just a main course, followed by coffees and just one pudding but the whole service took nearly three hours despite chasing up the delivery of both. The waitress even argued with us as to how long we had been waiting for coffees. Yes, there were several large groups in for lunch but the service was extremely slow. As for the food, we ordered 2 burritos and these were detailed on the menu as containing cauliflower, chick peas and spinach but one had no cauliflower and the other had one small piece and also there was no sign of any spinach in either. The main ingredient was rice which was not even mentioned as an ingredient. Almost inedible. Another in the group had the Wellington and the roast potatoes were clearly reheated and the dish had the gravy already added. Please deliver the gravy in a jug so that the customer can add it. Lastly the crumble was tasty but the portion size was tiny and cost over £8. Very poor value. Overall a lovely setting but the service and food were very disappointing. The manager did take the drinks off the bill but we will not be returning.

we had a family wake of 20 guests and the Highdown was outstanding. The Oak room looked beautiful and it's big, roaring fireplace gave a warm and cosy feel. There was plenty of seating and perfect space for us, the room not too large, just right. We went for buffet option B with sandwiches plus hot buffet food, the food was plentiful, beautifully presented and tasted absolutely delicious. It exceeded expectations. we liked that tea was available in the room to help ourselves to, although most guests were ordering drinks from the bar. During the reservations for the room, Richard and Lauren couldn't have been more helpful! They were kind and quickly replied to any questions that we had and did everything they could to accomodate us. Booked a table for 6 at a time suggested by the restaurant on a Saturday night. Had to ask for drinks order to be taken, waitress came back, no Harvey’s, asked for alternative but staff had no appreciation of what was on offer. Food orders then had to be changed twice as supplies had run out, we had booked, as I am sure had everybody else, should not happen. However, the food we had was good, staff all seemed like students, not a Saturday night to recommend.

Just arrived for a one night stopover So having stayed her before it’s a lovely place But the last visit was marred by the fact that the pub had no bitter ale I wrote to complain at that time to be told that it was most unusual and that bitter wasn’t popular any more! 😱 So before we get to our room we decided to have a drink… Yes, you guessed it, the pub has no beer! (ale to be exact!) This time I’m told it’s too popular!!!! When I asked when is it coming on I was told next week!! I asked about bottled ale - they have none!! Then , thinking they understand my frustration, I suggested they popped across the road to Asda and buy some, they said they couldn’t. So , please draw your own conclusions from this experience

Second Visit hoping food had improved, sadly was even more disappointed. Pork, black pudding and apple burger was a sad affair... The burger looked and tasted of just pork and griddled to within an inch of it's life, extremely dry and burnt... In terms of black pudding and apple I can only assume each were simply waved over the plate as certainly weren't incorporated. One sad little piece of lettuce and a super thick chunk of tomato. As per previous visit disappointing. Was there on a business lunch and just couldn't be bothered complaining. First visit in several months, friendly staff and nice surroundings. Fish & chips was disappointing. Looked good but sadly 75% batter with an extremely small and thin piece of fish inside.. a shame 😞

Fortunately we had some vouchers to use otherwise it would have been very expensive. The menu for us is a bit too "ooh la la" and feel they need a better selection of British favourites. I was hoping for nacho starters or something but crab seemed to pop up on the menu. £31.95 for a steak us crazy money and to automatically charge for water isn't right either. My fish and chips was nice however and my wifes burger too, but improve the menu choice and it felt like some fresher lighter decor is needed too as a bit dark

We had to ask for it and when it arrived the crumpets had gone cold. When we left we had to ask repeatedly for the bill which took a long time to arrive which we were told was due to the manager applying a discount for the missing butter Jam ans egg. The wife and I, plus a Staffie stayed here for four days and we all had a great time. It is extremely dog friendly with thoughtful facilities and additional touches, located in a dog walking paradise right outside the door is a real bonus. There are three elements to the Highdown, the pub, hotel, plus a tea room. All are dog friendly and it is hard to fault any. Parking is not a problem either but obviously I can't speak for other times of the year. A slightly bigger room would have been useful and is my only thought. All was nice and warm with log fires all day. We thought the hotel stay was good value. The breakfasts and evening meals we had were consistently excellent. Real ale and decent wine nicely topped everything off. The pictures speak for themselves, and we found the service friendly and attentive. It does appear to have more of a pub emphasis over the hotel side but this wasn't an issue. One of the very few places that we would be more than happy to return to. And we did some 15 months later. We had another great vacation but in all honesty it wasn't as good as the first. There were a few relatively minor issues but they were noticeable. The room was a bit warm so we decided to use the fan provided, until we realised how dusty it was. Coincidentally so was the extract fan in the bathroom. Breakfast wasn't great. We ordered exactly the same on three mornings and received three different versions. The sausages aren't nice, we never had a runny fried egg, they ran out of tomato, yoghurt, and jam for the toast. The self service buffet bar was also very poor by any measure, again the picture speaks for itself. A lot more attention to detail is required. The service wasn't great either but conversely everyone there was very friendly and more than helpful.

Nice little countryside pub! Slow service if the weather is nice but overall a great option for a lovely walk and then a drink or meal at the pub!

We had a fantastic meal on bank holiday Monday. We ended up staying two & half hours and not, at any point, did we feel we ought to leave. The food was wonderful and the staff were very friendly & knowledge. My boyfriend is gluten free and our waitress knew exactly what he could & couldn't order.

I have not tested the hotel. But the restaurant is of quality and is in a warm and friendly place. Try eating in a pub in the wealthy English countryside.

An absolute gem of a hotel that not only will I return to again but I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Every staff member we encountered was fantastic - particularly our greeter at Reception and our amazing dinner / breakfast hostess. It was our first anniversary and we not only had a lovely gift in our room but all the staff we encountered remembered and wished us a happy anniversary. Clean, well kept, comfortable rooms and a restaurant with truly one of the nicest meals we’ve had in a while plus a great breakfast - all for a really reasonable rate 10/10 would recommend

This was our first time at The Highdown for lunch with our Mum which is a rare occurrence as she suffers with anxiety. The restaurant was reasonably busy and we were shown to our table in the main restaurant. We were greeted by our lovely waitress Sandy who took our order. My Mum had several questions for Sandy who answered them all with professionalism, huge patience and a lovely calm attitude. The food arrived and was delicious. Sandy kept checking back on us throughout and absolutely nothing was too much trouble. The whole experience was delightful, the food, the setting and definitely made perfect by the excellent, kind service received from Sandy. Thank You so much, we will return for sure.

We’d been recommended Highdown by a friend and they raved about how great the food was. We thought, let’s try it out. The food and ambience was exceptional. This was complimented by Sandra who tended to us throughout the evening. All in all, a beautiful birthday supper. Thank you Highdown for our inaugural visit and we will be back. 🙏🏻❤️🥳

We started our visit by going to the tearooms. However, even though we arrived at a quiet time, we received no service at all. So, we decided to go to the main pub/restaurant, hoping for better service. We sat next to the staff service area near the bar, but the staff were chatting and ignoring us, so we had to ask for a menu. After we made our selection, we had to prompt them again to take our order. We ordered two fish pies and a rhubarb sponge dessert. After waiting for a while, our food arrived, but it was stone cold. The staff noticed and asked if everything was okay. We told them it wasn't, and they took the food back to the kitchen. They warned us that it would take some time to prepare our food again. After waiting for a long time, our food arrived, this time piping hot. However, the food was dry, with no sauce. My friend's fish pie had liquor, which made it taste better, but it was still mediocre. The only good thing about the meal was the rhubarb dessert, which was delicious. We paid £70 for one soda and lime, two meals, one starter, and two coffees, which wasn't good value considering the poor service and mediocre food. Overall, we won't be returning.

Our daughters took us for Mothering Sunday but we went on the Saturday. It was fully booked. Lovely room with nice deco and atmosphere. The staff were exceptional. Very friendly and obliging nothing too much trouble. The food was fantastic. It must rate as one of the best ever. Huge portions. We and most others took their cakes home in a box. Very generous with drinks. Coffee/tea mix and match. Had a really nice bar area. Catered for all ages and numbers. Allowed the two miniature dachshunds in who behaved perfectly, you would not have known they were there. A very pleasant afternoon and will repeat.

A visit on a Saturday lunchtime with my son for his birthday. Food was good but oh dear the service leaves a lot to be desired. Very long waits for food to arrive. We had wrong orders offered to us on at least three occasions. Staff ruining around like headless chickens. No direction at all.A number of parties were booked in and really staff could not cope which was a shame as food itself and the surroundings was good.

I had the Pecorino, truffle and potato hash brown, wild mushrooms, spinach, poached eggs, hollandaise followed by Sticky toffee pudding and ice cream. It was really good, could not fault it. Service was good in the restaurant but bar service was non existent. Shame as everything else was great

The only disappointment for us was the 'doggy dinners'. We'd gone there with the family and as Benji, our Cockapoo is family, he went too. We ordered him a roast chicken dinner but, i suppose naively, thought he'd be getting some offcuts of meat, potato's etc from the kitchen but that's not what he got! It was all dried biscuits and not as the doggy menu led us to believe it would be. Needless to say we spent £5 on some dried, boring bowl of biscuits which he didn't eat and was thrown away. So, the moral of the story is if your dog enjoys biscuits then fine but if he's a bit more selective then this will not work. Our meal was very good albeit delayed somewhat but the restaurant is set in lovely surroundings and enjoyable

We returned for Sunday lunch after staying the night before my wife had an operation locally, which meant she couldn't fully enjoy our first visit. Despite the long 89-mile drive (for lunch) from Poole to The HighDown, we were really pleased with everything. We had booked a table inside, but the sunny weather made us ask for a table outside when we got there. The staff were very helpful and moved us outside, where we had an amazing meal, probably the best Sunday lunch we've ever eaten. We'll certainly go back for another meal.

The Highdown Restaurant (which is owned by the Brunning and Price chain) occupies a small but attractive country house which was built in 1820 out of local Sussex flint on the southern slope of Highdown Hill, a conical outlier of the South Downs which rises to a height of 250 feet above the flat farmland of the Coastal Plain, just off the main A259 dual carriageway outside the village of Angmering. Highdown Hill is a very popular place for families to exercise their dogs and children as it has a large, free car park. It's also adjacent to the beautiful Highdown Gardens, created and lovingly tended for sixty years by retired Big Game hunter Sir Frederick Stern, which are now maintained by Worthing Borough Council and cost nothing to enter. So after working up an appetite walking in the fresh air on top of Highdown Hill, or exploring the lovely sheltered Gardens, where better to take the wife, children and dog for a bite to eat than in the main downstairs bar of the romantically-situated Highdown Restaurant? As an occasional visitor to Highdown Gardens I'd often enjoyed Afternoon Tea in what was the former Stables, but for some unknown reason until the Easter weekend of 2024 had never eaten a full meal in the adjacent restaurant, As it was the evening of Good Friday fish was the obvious choice for the Main Course. Accordingly I ordered the Parsnip and Apple Soup (GBP 7.25) followed by Roasted Halibut Steak on a Bed of Seasonal Vegetables with Braised Celeriac and Tempura Clams (GBP 22.95), followed by a Rhubarb, Orange and Stem Ginger sponge with Custard (GBP 7:95) for Afters. A 125ml glass of bone-dry, crystal-clear Picpoul de Pinet white wine from the excellent and reasonably-priced Drinks List (GBP 5.70) set the Roast Halibut off to sheer perfection and made me wish that I'd gone for a 250ml glass instead! The team of smartly-dressed young waiters and waitresses provided prompt and professional service even though the restaurant was busy at this time whilst the food itself was cooked to perfection. The portion sizes could possibly have been larger at these price points but that's just a minor quibble and not a deal breaker. Although I'm not a dog owner it was good to see our well-behaved, four-legged friends being made welcome at this establishment.

The worst dining experience I’ve ever had. The service was poor, 3 out of 4 of us felt their food was unappetising, of inferior quality ingredients & poorly cooked. Despite there being only a few other diners our mains took 50 mins to arrive. We were told it was because they were catering for a party upstairs. We expressed our dissatisfaction with our experience & a starter & side dish we’re taken off the bill but it didn’t compensate from our disappointing experience & I left hungry & quite frankly appalled by the lack of care. “Thanks for your feedback” were their parting words. We were given some vouchers for a discount for a future visit, but there definitely won’t be any future visits.

I am sorry as I hate to post bad reviews, but this takeaway was awful. The ribs were tender but sat in a salty ‘gravy’ that had no Chinese taste to it at all. The prawn balls were mainly uncooked batter! The duck in plum sauce was a weird deep fried battered duck breast with a separate thin and vaguely tasting plum sauce. The rice was bland. The noodles greasy… although the beef within it was surprisingly tender ?!? The roast chicken Chinese style was a chicken breast with a tiny amount of bean sprouts in another bland gravy/sauce. I am afraid that I would not order from there again
