We went here for our company Christmas lunch and had a little side room to ourselves. Not sure if that was a perk for us, or to protect the rest of the patrons 😂 We'd pre-ordered our food which all arrived promptly and was delicious. For such a busy time of year, the service was fine and we had a great time.

Sunday 15th at 5pm, We had a booking, we were excited to go to celebrate my wife birthday. Very disappointed at the service and how long it took our drinks to arrive, at the point of nearly going up the bar. We was forgotten about regarding our dinners they forgot our sides and did not offer us condiments. Cold dinner! When I wanted to pay I asked a man in a dark blue shirt he then looked me up and down then did not say anything to me just a young lads said he would help.

we had a family wake of 20 guests and the Highdown was outstanding. The Oak room looked beautiful and it's big, roaring fireplace gave a warm and cosy feel. There was plenty of seating and perfect space for us, the room not too large, just right. We went for buffet option B with sandwiches plus hot buffet food, the food was plentiful, beautifully presented and tasted absolutely delicious. It exceeded expectations. we liked that tea was available in the room to help ourselves to, although most guests were ordering drinks from the bar. During the reservations for the room, Richard and Lauren couldn't have been more helpful! They were kind and quickly replied to any questions that we had and did everything they could to accomodate us. The wake was for my Mum, who loved the Highdown hotel and tea rooms, and always enjoyed walking in the Highdown gardens and views from highdown hill. Thank you to the Highdown hotel and Staff you did my Mum proud. hope to return for a happier event soon. Huge thank you to all lovely staff there.

Just arrived for a one night stopover So having stayed her before it’s a lovely place But the last visit was marred by the fact that the pub had no bitter ale I wrote to complain at that time to be told that it was most unusual and that bitter wasn’t popular any more! 😱 So before we get to our room we decided to have a drink… Yes, you guessed it, the pub has no beer! (ale to be exact!) This time I’m told it’s too popular!!!! When I asked when is it coming on I was told next week!! I asked about bottled ale - they have none!! Then , thinking they understand my frustration, I suggested they popped across the road to Asda and buy some, they said they couldn’t. So , please draw your own conclusions from this experience

My family and I recently spent two nights & three days at the Highdown while visiting our family in East Preston. The Highdown hotel was welcoming, warm gorgeous open firer places clean and very happy for us to bring our family dog, a bowl, treats & a bed were supplied for him. Our room was very comfortable especially the bed, and very tastefully decorated. We met Serena while ordering breakfast she delivered pots of tea, four warm different breakfasts with a smile & friendliness. We booked an evening meal and included our family from East Preston. The menu was very varied and had something for everyone, the meals were good quality great value for money with a nice mix of flavours. The Highdown setting makes it an excellent short break away from home. The H family from Kent.

Second Visit hoping food had improved, sadly was even more disappointed. Pork, black pudding and apple burger was a sad affair... The burger looked and tasted of just pork and griddled to within an inch of it's life, extremely dry and burnt... In terms of black pudding and apple I can only assume each were simply waved over the plate as certainly weren't incorporated. One sad little piece of lettuce and a super thick chunk of tomato. As per previous visit disappointing. Was there on a business lunch and just couldn't be bothered complaining. First visit in several months, friendly staff and nice surroundings. Fish & chips was disappointing. Looked good but sadly 75% batter with an extremely small and thin piece of fish inside.. a shame 😞

Fortunately we had some vouchers to use otherwise it would have been very expensive. The menu for us is a bit too "ooh la la" and feel they need a better selection of British favourites. I was hoping for nacho starters or something but crab seemed to pop up on the menu. £31.95 for a steak us crazy money and to automatically charge for water isn't right either. My fish and chips was nice however and my wifes burger too, but improve the menu choice and it felt like some fresher lighter decor is needed too as a bit dark

Perfect. Food arrived quickly but breakfast bagel was missing an egg which we were told would come. It didn’t. Crumpets didn’t have any butter or jam as listed in the menu. We had to ask for it and when it arrived the crumpets had gone cold. When we left we had to ask repeatedly for the bill which took a long time to arrive which we were told was due to the manager applying a discount for the missing butter Jam ans egg. Although manager did give us a discount due to the poor experience I would not be coming back.

The wife and I, plus a Staffie stayed here for four days and we all had a great time. It is extremely dog friendly with thoughtful facilities and additional touches, located in a dog walking paradise right outside the door is a real bonus. There are three elements to the Highdown, the pub, hotel, plus a tea room. All are dog friendly and it is hard to fault any. Parking is not a problem either but obviously I can't speak for other times of the year. A slightly bigger room would have been useful and is my only thought. All was nice and warm with log fires all day. We thought the hotel stay was good value. The breakfasts and evening meals we had were consistently excellent. Real ale and decent wine nicely topped everything off. The pictures speak for themselves, and we found the service friendly and attentive. It does appear to have more of a pub emphasis over the hotel side but this wasn't an issue. One of the very few places that we would be more than happy to return to. And we did some 15 months later. We had another great vacation but in all honesty it wasn't as good as the first. There were a few relatively minor issues but they were noticeable. The room was a bit warm so we decided to use the fan provided, until we realised how dusty it was. Coincidentally so was the extract fan in the bathroom. Breakfast wasn't great. We ordered exactly the same on three mornings and received three different versions. The sausages aren't nice, we never had a runny fried egg, they ran out of tomato, yoghurt, and jam for the toast. The self service buffet bar was also very poor by any measure, again the picture speaks for itself. A lot more attention to detail is required. The service wasn't great either but conversely everyone there was very friendly and more than helpful.

We started our visit by going to the tearooms. However, even though we arrived at a quiet time, we received no service at all. So, we decided to go to the main pub/restaurant, hoping for better service. We sat next to the staff service area near the bar, but the staff were chatting and ignoring us, so we had to ask for a menu. After we made our selection, we had to prompt them again to take our order. We ordered two fish pies and a rhubarb sponge dessert. After waiting for a while, our food arrived, but it was stone cold. The staff noticed and asked if everything was okay. We told them it wasn't, and they took the food back to the kitchen. They warned us that it would take some time to prepare our food again. After waiting for a long time, our food arrived, this time piping hot. However, the food was dry, with no sauce. My friend's fish pie had liquor, which made it taste better, but it was still mediocre. The only good thing about the meal was the rhubarb dessert, which was delicious. We paid £70 for one soda and lime, two meals, one starter, and two coffees, which wasn't good value considering the poor service and mediocre food. Overall, we won't be returning.

The only disappointment for us was the 'doggy dinners'. We'd gone there with the family and as Benji, our Cockapoo is family, he went too. We ordered him a roast chicken dinner but, i suppose naively, thought he'd be getting some offcuts of meat, potato's etc from the kitchen but that's not what he got! It was all dried biscuits and not as the doggy menu led us to believe it would be. Needless to say we spent £5 on some dried, boring bowl of biscuits which he didn't eat and was thrown away. So, the moral of the story is if your dog enjoys biscuits then fine but if he's a bit more selective then this will not work. Our meal was very good albeit delayed somewhat but the restaurant is set in lovely surroundings and enjoyable

The Highdown Restaurant (which is owned by the Brunning and Price chain) occupies a small but attractive country house which was built in 1820 out of local Sussex flint on the southern slope of Highdown Hill, a conical outlier of the South Downs which rises to a height of 250 feet above the flat farmland of the Coastal Plain, just off the main A259 dual carriageway outside the village of Angmering. Highdown Hill is a very popular place for families to exercise their dogs and children as it has a large, free car park. It's also adjacent to the beautiful Highdown Gardens, created and lovingly tended for sixty years by retired Big Game hunter Sir Frederick Stern, which are now maintained by Worthing Borough Council and cost nothing to enter. So after working up an appetite walking in the fresh air on top of Highdown Hill, or exploring the lovely sheltered Gardens, where better to take the wife, children and dog for a bite to eat than in the main downstairs bar of the romantically-situated Highdown Restaurant? As an occasional visitor to Highdown Gardens I'd often enjoyed Afternoon Tea in what was the former Stables, but for some unknown reason until the Easter weekend of 2024 had never eaten a full meal in the adjacent restaurant, As it was the evening of Good Friday fish was the obvious choice for the Main Course. Accordingly I ordered the Parsnip and Apple Soup (GBP 7.25) followed by Roasted Halibut Steak on a Bed of Seasonal Vegetables with Braised Celeriac and Tempura Clams (GBP 22.95), followed by a Rhubarb, Orange and Stem Ginger sponge with Custard (GBP 7:95) for Afters. A 125ml glass of bone-dry, crystal-clear Picpoul de Pinet white wine from the excellent and reasonably-priced Drinks List (GBP 5.70) set the Roast Halibut off to sheer perfection and made me wish that I'd gone for a 250ml glass instead! The team of smartly-dressed young waiters and waitresses provided prompt and professional service even though the restaurant was busy at this time whilst the food itself was cooked to perfection. The portion sizes could possibly have been larger at these price points but that's just a minor quibble and not a deal breaker. Although I'm not a dog owner it was good to see our well-behaved, four-legged friends being made welcome at this establishment.

We visited the Highdown for a family lunch over the Easter weekend. The food is great - once it arrives. The front of house staff are not proactive and very forgetful. Our main courses took over an hour to arrive (after we’d chased them twice), and they forgot the sides, which were then brought after the plates were cleared. Same for the puddings - really slow. We also had to remind the waiter to bring some water 3 times, and then had to ask someone else. It’s a shame because the food is great, and if the staff were better trained this would be a really great restaurant.

I had the pate to start, admittedly this didn't claim to be home made on the menu, however I also did not expect this to be sliced from a larger pack from a supermarket. I recognise the pate as from a supermarket as its the one I buy myself. My partner and I both had the beef burger, which didn't seem to be seasoned. I couldn't eat mine, it was a real shame. Lovely roast dinner here with all the trimmings. Mother’s Fish and chips went down well. Definitely worth the higher price as it was one of the best roasts I’ve had. Bloody Lovely!

Lovely feel to the place. I have an allergy and the chefs did what they could to accommodate. I feel like the waitress could had more knowledge hence 4 stars but food was great. We didn't stay so don't know about the rooms

Some of us had Brie for starters and halibut for the main course. The main dish did not come with any sides, so we had to pay extra for them, but the portion size was generous. Unfortunately, our first choice for starters was already sold out, which was slightly disappointing, given that it was only 7:30 pm when we ordered. Overall, the food was good and comforting, making it a great place to dine with family.

We stayed at this beautiful hotel last Saturday, what a gem, the room was amazing , staff super friendly. Our evening meal on the Saturday was Devine. The waitress was telling me all about the hotel and Titanic wood used on the library. The only reason I am giving a 4 as the breakfast let it down. Waited 30 mins. Avocado to wet and made bread soggy..my bacon broke in half it was so burnt no flavour.. My partner said everything was over cooked . That their was no tate. Shame as we were really looking forward to an amazing breakfast. I probably would have asked for it to be the cooked but we were so hungry and in a rush to pack. The croissants were amazing..the overall ambience and decor was beautiful..we will return and hopefully this is just a one off. But wanted to feedback our disappointment. That school boy error shouldn't have happened. even a waitress could have refused to take it out it was so obvious burnt.

Stayed for a three night mini break and had a lovely time. Excellent value for money and the breakfasts were wonderful. Although the staff were all young they really looked after us. Would highly recommend this hotel to anyone.

A birthday treat we stayed for three nights and the only tiny issue was my poached eggs at breakfast one morning were not runny, a very small problem in the scheme of things. We paid £115 a night and found the room was spacious and comfortable, the bathroom stunning with toiletries, great towels, even a non slip mat for the shower if preferred. The breakfast was well executed, cereals, fruit & yogurt, juice followed by a wealth of full breakfast choices, the scrambled eggs and smoked salmon was delicious. On our final morning my request for just toast, not actually on the menu was served without complaint and a generous serving. We had an evening meal on night one, the trout and pea risotto was so yummy I could have licked the plate and the lite bite of chicken pate on the nibbles menu was accompanied by a carrot and apricot chutney that complimented it perfectly. If the chef wants to send me the recipe....... The staff were welcoming, helpful but relaxed, well done!

The only reason I marked down the food and service was because we waited over 30 minutes for the dessert and I had to remind waitress . When it did arrive it had obviously been standing somewhere for a while as there was a thick solid skin on the custard both in the bowl and jug . It was a shame as it had otherwise been a lively meal

Visited the bar one evening. Beautiful building and furnishings, and not too busy for weekend (because of location I suppose - can't walk it in the dark). Staff very polite and friendly. Will definitely be back.

The food was great, service a little slow but not too bad. Dog friendly, which was a nice surprise too. The pace itself is very nice inside, comfortable, and roomy. I wasn't a guest. We went for lunch and would definitely return.

Fantastic Sunday Roast! After walking the dog on Highdown hill we had a table booked at THe Highdown for Sunday lunch, very welcoming staff, attentive service, and what a great lunch! Beautifully cooked beef and chicken, amazing veg selection, with crunch and superb flavour, a fluffy, crispy Yorkshire pudding. Someone in the kitchen certainly knows what they are doing, and we appreciated that, so much so we also managed a desert each, wonderful flavours on those too. Decent wine list and some delicious wine too. Left so full we skipped dinner last night. Overall a fantastic experience, we will definitely be returning.

I have been recommending the Highdown to friends and family for the last couple of years but have never written a review! The staff are always so accommodating for my family. We are a family who is vegan and gluten-free, staff always look after us all so well and are so proactive with doing allergy checks. I have been lucky enough to stay at the Highdown a few times and it was each time has been amazing, so quiet and peaceful. Breakfast is great too! Make sure to book in advance because their rooms get booked quickly!

The Highdown is a charming looking period hotel on its own extensive grounds. It is a pub and afternoon tea room along with hotel rooms. The rooms are excellent with a very spacious bathroom with walk-in rainfall shower along with a large traditional bathtub. Food was very good, all freshly made from a good selection of traditional pub style classic menu. Nice selection of ales and beers and extensive garden seating for outdoor drinks or food. Breakfast was also very good with an excellent full English option as well as a selection of breakfast pastries and cereals. Not the cheapest experience but you really do get what you pay for and I will be returning again.

What a wonderful find. Hubby and I took our little Rolo for an overnight stay and dinner for my birthday. First visit for us and first stay for all 3 of us in a dog friendly hotel. We couldn't have asked for more! On check in we met Richard who welcomed us and made friends with Rolo, before showing us to our lovely room. We were thrilled with the facilities of the room, lovely bathroom with roll top bath and walk in shower. We had a coffee machine, bath robes as well as a treat box for Rolo, with dog treats and a toy. We had dinner in the restaurant and the staff were all very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. The food was very well presented and tasted good. We were amazed at the dog menu too and our Rolo was made to feel welcome and he relaxed next to our table. We enjoyed the rest of the evening sipping wine by the open fire and it was very relaxing with Rolo sat next to us. All in all we had a brilliant stay and can't wait to return. Richard and all the staff made us feel so welcome and anyone would think we were regulars by the time we left! Thank you for the memorable experience 😊

The whole experience of the afternoon and evening was first class, and my wife's funeral is now the stuff of legend in the minds of my family and friends who attended. I have had so many emails and messages today about the way the wake was conducted that I haven't been able to answer them all yet. However I wanted to send a message of thanks to you all at the Highdown as soon as possible. I will see you again soon!

Each time we come here the food has been amazing and has never disappointed us. We came here earlier this evening and considering the waiter was manning the floor on his own, he did such a good job and is such an asset to the restaurant. The wait for food is never long and is always so delicious! We will return here time and time again.😊
