This was our first time at The Highdown for lunch with our Mum which is a rare occurrence as she suffers with anxiety. The restaurant was reasonably busy and we were shown to our table in the main restaurant. We were greeted by our lovely waitress Sandy who took our order. My Mum had several questions for Sandy who answered them all with professionalism, huge patience and a lovely calm attitude. The food arrived and was delicious. Sandy kept checking back on us throughout and absolutely nothing was too much trouble. The whole experience was delightful, the food, the setting and definitely made perfect by the excellent, kind service received from Sandy. Thank You so much, we will return for sure.

We’d been recommended Highdown by a friend and they raved about how great the food was. We thought, let’s try it out. The food and ambience was exceptional. This was complimented by Sandra who tended to us throughout the evening. All in all, a beautiful birthday supper. Thank you Highdown for our inaugural visit and we will be back. 🙏🏻❤️🥳

Our daughters took us for Mothering Sunday but we went on the Saturday. It was fully booked. Lovely room with nice deco and atmosphere. The staff were exceptional. Very friendly and obliging nothing too much trouble. The food was fantastic. It must rate as one of the best ever. Huge portions. We and most others took their cakes home in a box. Very generous with drinks. Coffee/tea mix and match. Had a really nice bar area. Catered for all ages and numbers. Allowed the two miniature dachshunds in who behaved perfectly, you would not have known they were there. A very pleasant afternoon and will repeat.

We started our visit by going to the tearooms. However, even though we arrived at a quiet time, we received no service at all. So, we decided to go to the main pub/restaurant, hoping for better service. We sat next to the staff service area near the bar, but the staff were chatting and ignoring us, so we had to ask for a menu. After we made our selection, we had to prompt them again to take our order. We ordered two fish pies and a rhubarb sponge dessert. After waiting for a while, our food arrived, but it was stone cold. The staff noticed and asked if everything was okay. We told them it wasn't, and they took the food back to the kitchen. They warned us that it would take some time to prepare our food again. After waiting for a long time, our food arrived, this time piping hot. However, the food was dry, with no sauce. My friend's fish pie had liquor, which made it taste better, but it was still mediocre. The only good thing about the meal was the rhubarb dessert, which was delicious. We paid £70 for one soda and lime, two meals, one starter, and two coffees, which wasn't good value considering the poor service and mediocre food. Overall, we won't be returning.

A visit on a Saturday lunchtime with my son for his birthday. Food was good but oh dear the service leaves a lot to be desired. Very long waits for food to arrive. We had wrong orders offered to us on at least three occasions. Staff ruining around like headless chickens. No direction at all.A number of parties were booked in and really staff could not cope which was a shame as food itself and the surroundings was good.

I had the Pecorino, truffle and potato hash brown, wild mushrooms, spinach, poached eggs, hollandaise followed by Sticky toffee pudding and ice cream. It was really good, could not fault it. Service was good in the restaurant but bar service was non existent. Shame as everything else was great

The only disappointment for us was the 'doggy dinners'. We'd gone there with the family and as Benji, our Cockapoo is family, he went too. We ordered him a roast chicken dinner but, i suppose naively, thought he'd be getting some offcuts of meat, potato's etc from the kitchen but that's not what he got! It was all dried biscuits and not as the doggy menu led us to believe it would be. Needless to say we spent £5 on some dried, boring bowl of biscuits which he didn't eat and was thrown away. So, the moral of the story is if your dog enjoys biscuits then fine but if he's a bit more selective then this will not work. Our meal was very good albeit delayed somewhat but the restaurant is set in lovely surroundings and enjoyable

The Highdown Restaurant (which is owned by the Brunning and Price chain) occupies a small but attractive country house which was built in 1820 out of local Sussex flint on the southern slope of Highdown Hill, a conical outlier of the South Downs which rises to a height of 250 feet above the flat farmland of the Coastal Plain, just off the main A259 dual carriageway outside the village of Angmering. Highdown Hill is a very popular place for families to exercise their dogs and children as it has a large, free car park. It's also adjacent to the beautiful Highdown Gardens, created and lovingly tended for sixty years by retired Big Game hunter Sir Frederick Stern, which are now maintained by Worthing Borough Council and cost nothing to enter. So after working up an appetite walking in the fresh air on top of Highdown Hill, or exploring the lovely sheltered Gardens, where better to take the wife, children and dog for a bite to eat than in the main downstairs bar of the romantically-situated Highdown Restaurant? As an occasional visitor to Highdown Gardens I'd often enjoyed Afternoon Tea in what was the former Stables, but for some unknown reason until the Easter weekend of 2024 had never eaten a full meal in the adjacent restaurant, As it was the evening of Good Friday fish was the obvious choice for the Main Course. Accordingly I ordered the Parsnip and Apple Soup (GBP 7.25) followed by Roasted Halibut Steak on a Bed of Seasonal Vegetables with Braised Celeriac and Tempura Clams (GBP 22.95), followed by a Rhubarb, Orange and Stem Ginger sponge with Custard (GBP 7:95) for Afters. A 125ml glass of bone-dry, crystal-clear Picpoul de Pinet white wine from the excellent and reasonably-priced Drinks List (GBP 5.70) set the Roast Halibut off to sheer perfection and made me wish that I'd gone for a 250ml glass instead! The team of smartly-dressed young waiters and waitresses provided prompt and professional service even though the restaurant was busy at this time whilst the food itself was cooked to perfection. The portion sizes could possibly have been larger at these price points but that's just a minor quibble and not a deal breaker. Although I'm not a dog owner it was good to see our well-behaved, four-legged friends being made welcome at this establishment.

We returned for Sunday lunch after staying the night before my wife had an operation locally, which meant she couldn't fully enjoy our first visit. Despite the long 89-mile drive (for lunch) from Poole to The HighDown, we were really pleased with everything. We had booked a table inside, but the sunny weather made us ask for a table outside when we got there. The staff were very helpful and moved us outside, where we had an amazing meal, probably the best Sunday lunch we've ever eaten. We'll certainly go back for another meal.

The worst dining experience I’ve ever had. The service was poor, 3 out of 4 of us felt their food was unappetising, of inferior quality ingredients & poorly cooked. Despite there being only a few other diners our mains took 50 mins to arrive. We were told it was because they were catering for a party upstairs. We expressed our dissatisfaction with our experience & a starter & side dish we’re taken off the bill but it didn’t compensate from our disappointing experience & I left hungry & quite frankly appalled by the lack of care. “Thanks for your feedback” were their parting words. We were given some vouchers for a discount for a future visit, but there definitely won’t be any future visits.

We visited the Highdown for a family lunch over the Easter weekend. The food is great - once it arrives. The front of house staff are not proactive and very forgetful. Our main courses took over an hour to arrive (after we’d chased them twice), and they forgot the sides, which were then brought after the plates were cleared. Same for the puddings - really slow. We also had to remind the waiter to bring some water 3 times, and then had to ask someone else. It’s a shame because the food is great, and if the staff were better trained this would be a really great restaurant.

The staff were lovely and the place itself is really nice/characterful. The problem is the food. I had the pate to start, admittedly this didn't claim to be home made on the menu, however I also did not expect this to be sliced from a larger pack from a supermarket. I recognise the pate as from a supermarket as its the one I buy myself. My partner and I both had the beef burger, which didn't seem to be seasoned. I couldn't eat mine, it was a real shame. Thankfully the chips were really nice. The staff were all friendly and welcoming, just the quality of the food really let the place down

Some of us had Brie for starters and halibut for the main course. The main dish did not come with any sides, so we had to pay extra for them, but the portion size was generous. Unfortunately, our first choice for starters was already sold out, which was slightly disappointing, given that it was only 7:30 pm when we ordered. Overall, the food was good and comforting, making it a great place to dine with family.

We stayed at this beautiful hotel last Saturday, what a gem, the room was amazing , staff super friendly. Our evening meal on the Saturday was Devine. The waitress was telling me all about the hotel and Titanic wood used on the library. The only reason I am giving a 4 as the breakfast let it down. Waited 30 mins. Avocado to wet and made bread soggy..my bacon broke in half it was so burnt no flavour.. My partner said everything was over cooked . That their was no tate. Shame as we were really looking forward to an amazing breakfast. I probably would have asked for it to be the cooked but we were so hungry and in a rush to pack. The croissants were amazing..the overall ambience and decor was beautiful..we will return and hopefully this is just a one off. But wanted to feedback our disappointment. That school boy error shouldn't have happened. even a waitress could have refused to take it out it was so obvious burnt.

A birthday treat we stayed for three nights and the only tiny issue was my poached eggs at breakfast one morning were not runny, a very small problem in the scheme of things. We paid £115 a night and found the room was spacious and comfortable, the bathroom stunning with toiletries, great towels, even a non slip mat for the shower if preferred. The breakfast was well executed, cereals, fruit & yogurt, juice followed by a wealth of full breakfast choices, the scrambled eggs and smoked salmon was delicious. On our final morning my request for just toast, not actually on the menu was served without complaint and a generous serving. We had an evening meal on night one, the trout and pea risotto was so yummy I could have licked the plate and the lite bite of chicken pate on the nibbles menu was accompanied by a carrot and apricot chutney that complimented it perfectly. If the chef wants to send me the recipe....... The staff were welcoming, helpful but relaxed, well done!

Fantastic Sunday Roast! After walking the dog on Highdown hill we had a table booked at THe Highdown for Sunday lunch, very welcoming staff, attentive service, and what a great lunch! Beautifully cooked beef and chicken, amazing veg selection, with crunch and superb flavour, a fluffy, crispy Yorkshire pudding. Someone in the kitchen certainly knows what they are doing, and we appreciated that, so much so we also managed a desert each, wonderful flavours on those too. Decent wine list and some delicious wine too. Left so full we skipped dinner last night. Overall a fantastic experience, we will definitely be returning.

What a wonderful find. Hubby and I took our little Rolo for an overnight stay and dinner for my birthday. First visit for us and first stay for all 3 of us in a dog friendly hotel. We couldn't have asked for more! On check in we met Richard who welcomed us and made friends with Rolo, before showing us to our lovely room. We were thrilled with the facilities of the room, lovely bathroom with roll top bath and walk in shower. We had a coffee machine, bath robes as well as a treat box for Rolo, with dog treats and a toy. We had dinner in the restaurant and the staff were all very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. The food was very well presented and tasted good. We were amazed at the dog menu too and our Rolo was made to feel welcome and he relaxed next to our table. We enjoyed the rest of the evening sipping wine by the open fire and it was very relaxing with Rolo sat next to us. All in all we had a brilliant stay and can't wait to return. My first time here with my mum and grandma for a lovely lunch. I was amazed at the location and impressed by the exterior. It was nice to see the hotel and tea rooms which were also open/available which I'm sure I will visit next year. The inside was even more impressive and the staff were all very friendly and welcoming. We had a lovely inside table in the corner which was perfect for my elderly grandma and I really enjoyed the decor throughout the pub. The service was set at the highest standard from the moment we sat down, and nothing was too much to ask of any of the lovely staff. The added Christmas crackers on the table also were a lovely touch. The ladies toilets which were upstairs were also very clean and very grand. Their is also a disabled toilet which is accessible on the ground floor which was ideal for my elderly grandma. We shared a starter and each had a main which were all superb. Some of the best food I've had in a long time. Will highly recommend the buttermilk chicken burger! I was very happy with the selection on the menu and the speed of the food and drinks. It’s a lovely location for a roast on a Sunday, but you are definitely paying for the location. It was extremely over priced for what it was. Also I understand Sundays are busy, but service was also very slow, even being right next to the busy bar area. Multiple orders made from my table that were not processed by the waitress, which ended up in an overly long lunch, as we spent most of time waiting for things to come to the table that hadn’t even been ordered through by the waitress. My husband and I recently stayed at this hotel after attending a party. It’s tucked away from the main road next to some beautiful gardens. The staff were all amazingly helpful and seemed genuinely passionate about their hotel and restaurant. We were told the kitchen shut at around 9/9.30pm, however if we wanted any food after our afternoon party, we could phone ahead, if it was getting nearer 9pm and they would have it ready for our arrival. The room was comfortable and well equipped. The only thing we can honest say was missing was a nice robe to put on, after showering. The restaurant had a great selection of gluten free options, which was a treat for me being celiac. The food was great quality and good value for money. They are also dog friendly. So we will definitely be back to stay again with our lovely well behaved dog and hopefully get more chance to look around and do some of the lovely walks near by. This used to be a good choice of place for lunch, but, sadly, it's gone right off! Today, they could not find my booking, although I had confirmed it by e-mail when requested to do so. They did fit us in, but added insult to injury when they cancelled the reservation an hour later!! I only wanted a light lunch, so ordered a starter - seared mackerel with beetroot chutney, sour creme fraiche and basil. This consisted almost entirely of basil, with a tiny piece of mackerel and a small amount of beetroot chutney. At £11.95, this is outrageous! Luckily, my wife had ordered two sides - a mac-and-cheese and a cabbage - both much larger than my starter!! So she shared. And recently, we have twice had the experience of waiting an hour for food to arrive. I doubt if we'll be back in a hurry!

We went to the restaurant for our wedding anniversary and the food was all so incredible. The lamb shoulder fell apart, the quiche was bright and refreshing, the toffee apple pavlova and apple sorbet was presented beautifully and the zing of the sorbet combined well with the biscuit and meringue. Enjoyed every mouthful. We'll be coming back as soon as we can.

Came here for Sunday lunch with visiting friends. So great to find somewhere doing alternative to roasts. We all had different choices but all were superb from pigeon for starters one had roast and the rest of us fish dishes. Apparently the rhubarb and ginger pudding was second to none. I’m in a wheelchair but no trouble and they accommodated me well. Also lovely young lady called Sinead served us. So friendly and efficient. Not cheap but we are prepared for that if food is served nicely and lots of choices. Well done all the team. The place was packed so another good sign.

Arrived at the hotel was greeted by a gentleman called Callum who was professional and extremely helpful. Taking our case to our room and showing us around. All staff were very polite and couldn't do enough for us.

A strange, magical place, one takes a left turn and drives up a hill and lands in an island of peace and quiet. Set beautifully, the hotel itself is a hidden gem. The Check in was wonderful, the room itself spacious and thoughtfully outfitted and the bath - simply glorious!!!!! Dinner was outstanding in their restaurant, the staff very polite and just great. The only drawback was the extensive gin list- over 100 different gins to choose from 😊😊😊😊..mine was very tasty. Breakfast was also excellent...all in all, a place to be recommended to anyone travelling near Worthing

My Experience at The Highdown Restaurant, The restaurant & staff were great & the food was really nice especially the lamb & vegetables that were cooked to prefection, apart from the roast potatoes. We were in the private room upstairs which was nice for a birthday meal but, the staff were struggling to provide a good service due to customer numbers & minimal staff. The service was really slow for an example, it took about 15mins to get the salt & pepper to the table, & we didn't get asked if we wanted drinks. My overall experience was good but the basics needed looking at, to provide good customer service & care. Thanks

Staff make this place very special , Serina and Alex made you feel important and special , there mannerism and personality were exceptional. As was all the staff at breakfast and evening meal . The little cafe which look after the travellers It is set in a beautiful part of Surrey with the South Downs on the doorstep. Close to Worthing and Littlehampton which are lovely to explore. It is an absolutely fab little gem . We will go back again and again .thankyou.

We went for the afternoon tea and it was absolutely incredible. There were 4 sandwiches, a sausage roll, a quiche, a scone with cream and jam, plus 3 sweet treats each to go with unlimited tea. Everything was delicious and so well presented. They also accommodated for a seafood aversion with a separate set of sandwiches. The service was brilliant too, the staff are all really lovely and polite. Plus the garden area was perfectly set up for outside dining in most weather and so created a lovely ambience. I would definitely recommend and this is fast becoming one of my favourite venues.

Excellent as ever. Wide choice of menu. Warm enough to sit in garden and served by delightful waitress. We come to walk the adjacent gardens and then round off our visit with a meal in The Highdown.

Visited The Highdown with my mum, for Saturday lunch. Beautiful setting, lovely building and friendly staff. We sat inside, with our two dogs. This is a very dog friendly place, with treats and a doggie menu! The service was efficient and the food was absolutely divine. Great flavours, very well cooked and decent size portions. It’s not cheap, but it’s worth the money. Highly recommend. Will be returning.

My wife and I had Sunday lunch at The Highdown restaurant today. From the moment we arrived the staff were polite, attentive and very helpful. My wife had the vegan roast and I had the roast belly pork, we also had desserts. The food was superb very well presented and a delight to eat. Whilst we were there the manager Richard showed me around the various rooms as we wanted to book somewhere for a birthday lunch. Needless to say I would recommend this place to anyone. Some have said it’s expensive, we both disagree as the prices are similar to our local pub in Findon.

A beautiful location with the most beautiful gardens that we can all walk around in for free. If walking around in beautiful gardens is not your thing then the manor house Which accompanies these gardens Is also very lovely. And the food is absolutely lovely every time I've been there. A wonderful place to spend the day.

Have eaten at The Highdowm many times but never before for Sunday Lunch. Always great food & service. The Sunday Lunch menu has under heading of Sunday Roasts the following tasty sounding options: Sunday roasts Campbell Brothers roast beef (served pink), with Yorkshire pudding (832 kcal) (gfa) 22.95 Roast half chicken, sage and apple stuffing, pig in blanket (1286 kcal) (gf) 21.95 Mixed roast beef and porchetta, Yorkshire pudding, stuffing, apple sauce (1503 kcal) (gfa) 22.95 Roast porchetta, ( slow roasted belly), sage and apple stuffing, apple sauce (705 kcal) (gf) 18.95 Roast shoulder of lamb, red wine gravy, duck fat roast potatoes (1051 kcal) (gf) 25.95 Butternut squash, wild mushroom and lentil wellington roast potatoes, summer vegetables, gravy (813 kcal) (vg) 15.95 Two of us ordered the lamb, fully expecting lovely slices of lamb carved off a shoulder joint and with a generous slavering of mint sauce. Not what arrived! We were served slow- cooked lamb shanks! On the bone of course. Have to say the meat was superbly cooked, so tender it fell off the bone but it wasn’t roast lamb! One of our party very annoyed, as had Lamb Shank actually been advertised, they would have definitely ordered it! We did query the description and the delightful waitress checked with the kitchen but returned saying they assured her that it was indeed roast shoulder of lamb. Once over the physiological shock of not getting what we expected, did enjoy what was proffered as a roast but won’t make the same mistake again. Despite how busy they were on such a lovely hot September Sunday, the service was prompt & courteous as always.

Customers appear to be an inconvenience. I've been here a fair few times but yesterday was my last. Service is woeful and coffee warm at best. Customers seem to get in the way of their conversation at
