Booked table for Mothering Sunday. Staff are welcoming, friendly and exceptional service. Food was Sunday lunch, totally as hoped for. Fresh veg cooked well. The restaurant and location are beautiful. Will return again.

Totally FANTASTIC food!!! What a lovely place, very friendly all round. We went on a Saturday evening with no prebooking we were seated almost immediately! Having not been before I had no idea on the size of the portions...... if like me you don't eat so much I can tell you DO NOT order a starter as well as a main!! We ordered a sharing starter; which when it arrived I wondered who else would be joining us 🤣 very impressively big portion for 2 people. And we perfectly cooked..... meat sharing platter..... ribs, mushrooms, chicken poppers, and spring rolls. The meat fell off the ribs 😋 I had ribs, chicken, chips, slaw and salad for main and no word of a lie there was enough there to feed 3 people; fantastic value for money!! I managed to try every element of the meal, which was prepared to perfection!! My companion had steak and ale pie with chips, carrots and peas. He said it was delicious! And again there was a very descent amount of food there! Needless to say; we didn't order dessert and had to take a doggy box! The atmosphere was adorable!! Lots of couples and 4's enjoying the food, place and company! The ladies toilet was beautiful!! Done out in wood it look gorgeous. Very clean and well stocked with all the necessaries. So that's all the good stuff, there were just a few minor niggles on the bad...... the lady waiting us didn't seem in the best of moods and when taking the menus away, instead of asking for them she reached across the table to grab them which was right between the 2 of us. There was a fair wait for the food to arrive. While we were eating our server didn't ask at all if everything was OK or if we needed anything else.

Stopped in on the off chance and had a amazing roast turkey dinner. I must say I loved the fact that the vegetables were separate as someone who's not a fan of veg this was a nice change. Definitely going back

A lovely local pub, with great food and atmosphere with roaring fire. We ate here for a birthday celebration, and enjoyed a few starters plus the beef pie, mix grill and fish pies. All fresh and flavoursome. Recommend booking ahead as it can get busy.

The Heron is thoroughly recommended. Fantastic food. Generous portions. Lovely atmosphere. We came last Sunday for our second visit. Our first visit was on a Saturday and so the full menu was available that day. We were thrilled that our Cockapoo puppy could also be accommodated inside. It is obviously very popular, because it was tricky to find parking this time. There is a muddy overflow car park (I think it belongs to The Heron anyway) across the road, if no spaces at all are available in the main car park. Once you've eaten here, you will understand why the car park gets busy. Sunday is a set menu but the food was absolutely beautiful. Most of us had roasts but one in our party had the fish and chips and he was amazed to see two huge pieces of fish and he said that the batter was the best he had tasted. Everything was cooked to perfection and the portions are very generous. We stumbled on The Heron initially (Google reviews helped) as it is roughly half way between three families but the 100+ mile round trip for us is definitely worth it. We were sat in the bar area and given how busy the restaurant must have been based on the car park, if was actually lovely and quiet in the bar area and so we could have a conversation and easily hear one another. So many customers who arrived or left via the bar area were obviously repeat customers, which says it all really. I thoroughly recommend The Heron to anyone reading this. We are already looking forward to returning here again in 2025.

Expected workmanlike pub grub, but I had the sizzling steak in black bean sauce with chips and it was excellent (and very reasonably priced). We will be back!

Best pub roast and dog friendly

Went for Sunday lunch. Even though there were 10 of us it was great, excellent food and service, cannot fault anything and everyone thoroughly enjoyed it. Will definitely be back.

Very attentive staff and good quality food at a reasonable price. Has 3 electrical points for travelling mobile homes in car park at a reasonable night charge. 2 rooms for B and B available and nice extension to original pub giving a very nice embience. Well done to the new owners and my family will be dining there again. Had my Sister in Laws 70th birthday there today and had a wonderful time with help from the staff .... Once again..thank you. The Heron is a lovely pub, always a welcoming place to go, food is always lovely with plenty of choice. We sat outside in the sun and had a lovely afternoon, I would recommend the Heron as it's a lovely bar and restaurant.

Vegetables let it down peas carrots cabbage cheap veg and had to pay extra for small portion of cauliflower cheese and think they was frozen parsnips the rest was very tasty and reasonably priced except the shiraz at 7.50 a glass staff excellent

Have been twice the first time ,we booked a table to find when we arrived our table was taken. Never mind got a table and food and service very good.Second time arrived in plenty of time for our booked table in the bar. Only to find that we had a table in the restaurant, when we pointed out that our table was in the bar, we were told to take it up with the manager, who guess what was not there on a very busy Friday night. The young people behind the bar and serving looked like rabbits in headlights.

Been a few times. Would keep going.

The Heron is a pleasant little riverside gastro type pub in a semi-rural spot. It has a cozy beer garden with a decked area with a river view. Lots of seating options out and in. Dog friendly. We did not eat on this occasion but the roasts looked very good. Plenty of food options available. I would go again.

What a great little pub! We happened upon this place in search of somewhere to get a bite to eat. The staff were so friendly, even welcoming to the dog and the food was delicious. What a lovely meal we had at The Heron, great location and dog friendly. We had a sizzling sirloin steak platter, very tasty and tender. Chips were good, I'm not a fan of chips but would order these again. Service was friendly and quick. Definitely recommend and will return again. 😁

Very nice place to eat, good food and portion sizes. Did have to wait a little bit on the dessert unfortunately.....

Had a family get together here today and I can honestly say that the food service and atmosphere did not fail us in anyway. My intention was a main Sunday dinner and a dessert but my oh my there was no way I could have eaten anything after my roast. Meat was cooked to perfection the veg was fresh and the Yorkshire pudding was huge. Hubster had fish n chips, again huge fish and very tasty fluffy chips. Others enjoyed their meals too and like me were absolutely stuffed with no room for dessert.

Far too much BBQ sauce on ribs. Frozen chips and cheap quality peas served with pie, disappointing meals. Did not bother to complain, just our personal opinion.

Great lunch stop, lovely decor, food great!

Went here with a large party pre booking and pre ordering to give the kitchen a decent chance at getting everything right. Well, they tried. Upon arrival, we went to the front bar for some drinks, and I’d say the staff in a Wetherspoons had more of an idea what they were doing than the young people behind the bar. Easily a 10-15 minute wait for drinks, two pints, an amaretto and a couple of orange juices. A disappointing opening experience. Moving onto the table, they had tried to be as accommodating as possible, obviously a table of 18 isn’t the easiest to fit in, so they did their best and we were grateful. The room was cold, no staff were available to turn the heaters on, so we managed to do it ourselves. With the table booked for 7:30, everyone in attendance by 7:15, it would be my expectation that food would arrive by 8:00 latest. 8:30 and eventually the first food came out. There was an issue with a steak, which was rectified quickly and politely with the waiting staff. UNTIL, the owner came over and very publicly and very loudly began criticising, and making out it was everyone on the tables fault the steak wasn’t right, and not hers. She then stormed off in a huff never to be seen again. Sadly, she was overheard by multiple guests of the party being very rude and disrespectful to other patrons about the table, which is anything but expected. Another member of the table walked past the kitchen to go to the toilet and heard the manager on a rampage at the waiting staff and kitchen staff, reducing one of them to tears. I’d suggest this isn’t the first time the owner has performed a stunt like this and it wouldn’t surprise me if she’d do it again. My steak was asked for medium, so my expectation would be that it comes out with some dripping. The toughness of the steak was the same texture as a flip flop, however I didn’t complain until after I’d eaten it as I’d driven over 4 hours for this celebratory meal and was hungry. When I did complain I was assured the owner would come and see me, she was never to be seen. The dessert, I had a crème brûlée, and I think the top of the brûlée had the texture of a double glazed window, I took it off to avoid scratching the inside of my mouth, although the rest of the dessert was good. Overall, the experience was very poor. The waiting staff did the best they could, and were very friendly. Special credit to the owners daughter, who did everything she could for the table, and came and apologised for the owners actions on her behalf, as she was simply too proud to. You won’t see me put another penny behind the bar, and if you’re looking for a good meal in the area of The Heron, try The Angel in Watlington instead.

Booked a table for 6 on a Saturday lunchtime. We were greeted warmly and shown to our table with lots of natural light as requested. Good choice of real ale kicked off a very pleasant lunch. The servers were helpful, courteous and attentive. The food was of good quality and the special sizzling dish looked lovely. I had the double pork cutlet. We all had starters but to be honest that part of the menu could do with a bit of a lift as not the most exciting. Two of our group ordered the meat platter to share. Looked good but not sure I would have wanted potato wedges on my starter. It would have made a good main course for one though. The decor was lovely and the room bright and airy. In the area and looking for somewhere to eat? Would highly recommend. Child and dog friendly though I think all children have to be kept on a lead (or was that the dogs) 😁

Lovely food, great portions for Sunday lunch. Good value for money. The restaurant is bigger than expected. The front bar area is cosy and well decorated. This is what you call a destination restaurant. The vegetarian roast was very good. Staff were friendly and attentive

Great friendly pub with awesome home cooked food. The only downside is how far it is from where I live, but really worth the hours drive each way. It is a very special place, a bit of a rarity nowadays.

This is consistently my favourite pub around King's Lynn/Downham for roasts or any food. Today we can for a roast, were served promptly and the food was delicious! I consistently return and recommend this to any one.

Family gathering, 5 adults 4 children & 2 dogs. Entrance is not very clear from the car park a bit confusing. Lovely outside seating area beside the river & dog friendly inside and out. Range of food ordered from sea bass, steaks & steak pie, and they were all very well presented & very tasty. Good value for money, dog friendly seating inside and service was quick .

Booked a table for four to have Sunday roast ( after doing a buggy ride at watatunga wildlife reserve nearby ) we were seated and served quickly by Abi , the food was good quality and the quantity was just right , the decor is lovely and the restaurant clean and fresh , plenty of tables inside and out and fenced off from the river except the gateway to the jetty , would recommend this pub and will visit again when in the area 👍👍👍

One of the best pub food you can have in Norfolk. Very deliciously made, good ingredients used. Service was good. On a lovely sunny day, would be a joy to sit in the garden, inside is ok but a bit cramped. Clean overall, no nasty pub smell at all.

Went to the Heron Saturday night for a birthday meal. On holiday so first visit here great choice food was excellent and service and staff very good. Would highly recommend.

The Heron, alongside the River Great Ouse, is a delightful pub/restaurant. Although it retains the character of a much older establishment, it has been tastefully renovated making it welcoming and comfortable. The menu has many tempting starters, mains and deserts, and from the illustrations, the chef certainly understands the importance of presentation. As we were not looking for a full meal, my wife and I skipped the starters and went for fish and chips. Two portions available, my wife chose the smaller whilst I selected the larger. Service was warm and friendly and there was nothing wrong with the presentation or the proportions - just as well I enjoy fish! Definitely a place that we will go out of our way for lunch or dinner at sometime in the future. This time with the intention of exploring more of the menu.
