If you’re lucky enough to be be able to grab yourself a stay in the Gun Hill suite (or any other room!) in this lovely little North Norfolk pub, don’t miss out! The room offers the most picture perfect view down to Burnham Overy Staithe and the nautical comings and goings that make this special area so very magical. Although simply furnished, the room is spacious, warm and with the most comfortable bed offering a wonderful night’s sleep after days spent exploring the beautiful coastline. The pub staff are welcoming and super friendly ~ it is an incredibly relaxed place with a great atmosphere, 100% dog friendly and the food is fabulous with a choice of busy bar area or quieter restaurant to enjoy your meal in. And to really finish off your visit, they present you with a bag of proper Norfolk goodies when you depart ~ what’s not to love!! It can be difficult to find availability as they only have three rooms and these are almost always booked up quite a way in advance due, I’m sure, to the friendliness of welcome, superb position in a fabulous little spot of calming paradise on the Norfolk coast and level of service offered - I’ve stayed three times now and will return time and time again, just love it!

We stayed here in the past week for two nights on a bed and breakfast basis but also ate in the pub each night. We chose the Hero for its location close to the Marshes and beaches that we know so well and also because we have had lunch outside previously and enjoyed this. The service and friendliness of staff throughout our visit was impeccable. The food was outstanding, both breakfast and evening meal. The ingredients were top quality. We stayed in Cockleshell with our dog Sally and found the room to be very comfortable and my wife loved the toiletries that were provided. A very very enjoyable stay and we look forward to returning in the Autumn. Thankyou Team Hero- you know who you are!

Just had an absolutely wonderful February half term stay here. We knew it was a good pub in a great location, but have been blown away by the quality of food, drink and hospitality of the place. The staff clearly work extremely hard to make your stay as enjoyable as possible and deserve great credit for this. We will definitely return and next time I'm keeping my smoked haddock chowder to myself and not swapping it half way through for the Mrs's option (although hers was lovely too, to be fair).

We chose a two night stay in 'Cocklestrand' for our anniversary, as we wanted to stay somewhere without stairs. The room was very clean, quiet and comfortable, and we couldn't really fault it, everything that we needed was there, with the added bonus of a cafetiere and generous supply of lovely ground coffee - a far cry from little sachets of nescafe that some inns provide. Really nice shower, plenty of hot water, fluffy white towels, comfortable bed, etc., etc. Breakfast was really good, anything that you could want, and no problem having seconds of that really good coffee. All of the staff were friendly, polite, helpful and on it, and we came back one evening to find a bottle of wine and a card outside our room (we had mentioned in passing that we were celebrating our anniversary) which was a thoughtful surprise! Some reviewers have mentioned that the menu had limited scope, well, we would prefer quality over quantity, and all of the food we ordered was excellent. We would definitely stay here again, we were made to feel very welcome, thank you, Hero team!

Very disappointing, we live locally & been several times before. Bought a voucher as a birthday present for family. I ordered the fish finger sandwich with fries, imagining soft white fluffy fish in a light crispy batter. Sadly the fish was flat, dark & dry, seemed like a frozen tail end, awful & inedible, grim. We also ordered 2 burgers (which were ok) but the waiter gave the one we ordered without gherkin to the wrong person, specifically stating this is the one without gherkin (it wasn't). Waited half an hour for our order as waiting for a 20 minute pie to cook allegedly served with"triple" cooked chips. On arrival the chips were anemic & some were hard, barely cooked once let alone thrice! My sister in law left most of them. Next came the profiteroles "for chocolate lovers" (according to the waitress). Sadly they tasted stale, stodgy, dry & hardly any chocolate. We did inform the waitress of our issues, she thanked us for our feedback but no apolology or redress offered.

We'd really liked the Hero when we stayed nearby in March. Very disappointed this week. On the positive side - really well run, lovely staff, good beers and clearly popular. Food had really deteriorated. Greasy chips, thick floury batter on chips and UP vegi burgers- in a pub that has a tag of providing 'locally sourced, quality produce'! Not bad enough to send back to kitchen but very poor in comparison to 6 months ago. Perhaps bad timing but little vegi choice Vegan fish and chips or the UP burgers.

A great little find on our trip to Norfolk. The staff were very helpful and attentive, the menu was varied with specials including a whole plaice. Reasonably good value for money and definitely a "must visit again" place!

Sadly this ‘pub’ operates table service only, so it’s not really a pub is it? The once-lovely traditional bar now houses some outward-facing computer screen ‘tills’ for the staff and provides a surface for the empties to be stored on. Not a great look! When we were there, there was only one member of staff behind the bar preparing drinks for the entire pub and restaurant - what a crazy and frustrating system! All the human connectivity of going to the bar, checking out the beers, maybe having a chat with a stranger - gone. Perhaps this is the only way of operating that generates enough profit to satisfy the owners, but it makes for a very sterile experience. Also, the place is overrun with lockdown dogs and their inexperienced owners.

A little strange. A pub that operates as a restaurant. No bar service, order at the table and at times get frustrated by young waiters not really paying attention to guests. Food was excellent- lobster, what is there not to like. Chips amazing. Just frustrating once order has been made if you want another drink, a dragged out process and slow.

Let's keep this review short & to the point - the pub bar was closed on a weekday lunchtime (why?) so we were eventually seated in the restaurant area and waited and waited and waited... After 20 minutes we managed to order some drinks, and 20 minutes later they arrived. We were then told that at least three dishes on the restaurant menu were not available and that the triple-cooked chips had been replaced with "fries" (AKA oven chips). Will I be returning to The Hero to part with my hard earned cash?? Nope!

Do not go here if you want a relaxed Sunday lunch as you and The Hero are on different pages. Overall we were disappointed in our Sunday lunch. One had the roast lamb which was well done and very average. The other of us had the crab salad. Tiny amount of crab within a very small shell - frankly I would have been embarrassed to serve it. As others have said mostly brown meat and an undressed salad. Service was very rushed- demand for order in 2 minutes of being seated is the wrong side of the line. Weird and questionable response when a second round of drinks was ordered. Prices are on the high side of acceptable. On balance I would not return there are better options

This place calls itself a pub? Up to 20or 30 miniutes to get a pint. Closes without warning. If you are not there specifically for food, you are a second or third class citizens. A lovely pub in a great spot, but a disappointing meal. 'Local' crab was entirely brown meat with an undressed salad, tasteless portion of shredded cabbage in mayo and, oddly, chips. Staff all young lads, friendly but slow and hard to catch the eye of even though the place was half empty by the time we arrived. I had to ask twice for water and they didn't know the price of the specials. When I asked for some balsamic dressing to make the bland salad leaves taste of something the waiter said they didn't have any and brought malt vinegar. I mentioned the crab to one of them and might have been talking about the weather - nothing went in. This is a solid-looking, nicely-furnished dog-friendly place that suits parties of holidaying friends and is doing nicely on it - but personally I wouldn't return.

What a great pub. We stopped by chance to have lunch after a walk with our dogs. Firstly, the staff are lovely and it’s very dog friendly. We had fish and chips and the garlic and chive gnocchi, it was delicious and a very reasonable price for the quality and portion size. We loved it so much we made two further trips back for lunches during the week we were staying a couple of villages away. On those occasions we had the rarebit and burger, both were so lovely and tasty and again, reasonable price for a what you get. I look forward to going again when we next stay in the area.

We booked for a late lunch at 3pm on Easter Sunday. It was busy but great atmosphere, a sunny day so lots of people sitting outside. We were shown to our table promptly which was in a nice position by the window but it hadn’t been wiped down, with crumbs. The waitress who was not cheerful and just going through the motions, took some time to come to take our drinks and food order. The food took a long time to arrive. The pie of the day was very good but the fish (fish and chips) was greasy, the batter too thick and skin still on (yuk, thought this was a thing of the past). The puddings were nice enough. My daughter ordered another drink which never arrived. Overall it’s a fun buzzing place to go but the food and service were average on this occasion.

Would give 3 and a half stars if I could: we ate here twice and also called in for a couple of pints while staying in the village for a week - have visited several times before over the last 2 years and this week we felt it wasn’t quite as good as before. Very welcoming to the humans and the dog, we didn’t experience any of the staffing issues recently referred to. We’d booked for the Sunday evening and the manager rang to advise that all the roasts were finished , in case that was what we were after. Good customer service. Beers and ciders were good. Food orders came through without unnecessary delay. On the downside the “mains” menu was limited, the chowder no longer on but it was available as a special, a rather thin version with more potato than fish. The burger was unnecessarily large, double patty. Fish & chips perhaps a little overdone, jackfruit curry delicious (if you like these things!). I would happily be back but it would be nice to see a little more variety on the menu.

Oh dear. We have very fond memories of the Hero-special experiences coming out of lockdown outside being the best. Staff and food usually very good. Today we had problems as soon as we arrived, Not able to get table we had specifically asked for but not able to resolve matter with member of staff. Table ordinary and one meal cold. Asking for extras ie sauce took quite a while and second drink took nearly as long as our main course. The nadir was trying to getting a resolution when trying to pay-no acceptance of issues should have raised at time etc. Manager was called - quite aggressive and intimidating. I was accused of not being prepared to pay bill rather than asking for a reasonable reduction. We will not be back and will advise our Norfolk friends not to attend. Staff need to listen and not just justify their position - perhaps just say they are understaffed!!

We regularly visit the Hero-mostly for a pint but often for food too. It’s been some time since we’ve had a roast here and we booked a mid afternoon slot with our 2 kids and border terrier after a wet wintery walk on the beach. Absolutely delicious food-I had the vegetarian roast which was fantastic (a mushroom wellington type offering) and my husband had the beef. One of my daughters had the kids roast pork which was also received with rave reviews. I can honestly say that every component was wonderful-light and fluffy Yorkshire’s, thick and tasty gravy, crispy potatoes and a variation of well seasoned veg including my favourite cauliflower cheese. We enjoyed puddings too and were not disappointed with the massive bowl of sticky toffee pudding and a crunchy pear and blackberry crumble of just right proportions. Very generous platefuls of all courses. The staff (as is always the case) were attentive without being overbearing, and friendly to our scruffly little mutt too. And a really fair price for a very good meal. Won’t be so long until we return for a Sunday roast this time!

On arrival the staff were welcoming and showed us to our table in the bar area. The atmosphere was cozy with candle lit tables. The Hero seemed to be the spot for locals, as the staff seemed to know many guests by name and we felt very much at home and comfortable in the environment. Our waiter was very attentive, took our drink and food orders promptly and even found colouring pencils for our daughter. The food was incredible - we ordered topside of beef twice, and a children’s chicken roast dinner. This was incredibly good value for a budget hotel booking of two rooms two people at £30 each per night. Rooms were clean, comfortable and adequately furnished. But warm, it was not. On the night we stayed in early March, Hunstanton was as cold as the north of Scotland and there was no heating! I didn't feel like rousing the staff in the middle of the night so we stuck with it. The heating should have been on and we should have been told how to use it. Staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast cost extra (£13 each) but in these straightened times reasonably priced, and set us up for the day. I could have done with some soap or handwash in my room, but the courtesy tray was decently stocked and the free bottle of spring water a plus. Overall, there was room for some improvement, but generally I would rate Wash and Tope 'Very Good' and would certainly stay there again. It is also very well situated for everything in Sunny Hunny, parking was no problem and the bar was pleasant, although I didn't appreciate it closing at 9.30 on a Sunday evening!

Lovely place, amazing service and drinks. Food was pleasant however the fish platter for 2 was more suited for a larger sharing starter than a main course for 2, even with fries and garlic bread we were wanting a bit more. However the vibe and atmosphere was perfect and would recommend to others in the area!

Our accommodation was elsewhere and food not good so went here. This review is purely on food and bar services, we came here for meals, breakfast and evening meal. There were some builder in the indoor spaces doing some work but they were not disturbing us. Breakfast lady a little unsure of what her job is, i wanted to swap egg and bacon off 1 breakfast for extra slice of toast and a Rosti, NOPE NO SWAPS she was happy to leave them off my plate but then wanted to charge extras for toast and rosti, so I said forget it, just do 3 normal breakfast but put egg and bacon on a separate plate off one of breakfasts. Then next morning builders were again present around the indoor area and had to turn electric off briefly, before we arrived, then as we walked through door, same lady from yesterday morning was flapping and saying tills have gone down, she can't turn them on as she'll get into trouble, she kept repeating this to the builder blokes, who were telling her to just turn the switch back on and they would boot up, needless to say one of builders flicked the switch and tills rebooted up. Then she was waffling on about not my computer, I'm not allowed to switch them on. Honestly she was hard work. In the evenings Alan and Sarah were very attentive and a delight when we came for our evening meal for 3 nights. Food delicious and definitely worth shouting about. Bar prices reasonable too. Thank you
