Came across this gem of a pub after attending the Marmalade Festival. As previous people have noted it serves food for longer than any others in the area ( from 12md to 9pm) Very friendly and welcoming hosts. We had drinks (hubby recommends the Lowes Water beer) we shared starters (haggis fritters and garlic mushrooms) both were delicious. Star attraction had to be the steak and ale pie we both had, was so full of meat it overflowed, was the tastiest pie either of us has had. We would very much recommend this pub to others.

Absolute lifesavers! Me and my Boyfriend decided to walk 2 miles from Whitbarrow Village for food and drinks at 7pm. The food was great, and the staff were extremely welcoming. We planned to get a taxi back, but couldn’t find a service in the area. The landlord, and bar staff were concerned about us taking back, and were quick to offer us a lift back to our accommodation. Couldn’t be more happy with the food, and service and even enjoyed a game of pool. Great staff and we are in debt for that lift.

This was our first visit since the new landlord took over. The young man serving was very pleasant and friendly. The food took a while to come, but we all agreed it was very good. My only critisicm is the landlord took no interest at all to my suprise! He ignored all customers, including what seemed to be locals, and was far more interested in his phone, and watching TV,in fact he didn't speak at all, even when we left and said goodnight!

My daughter and I was looking for a cosy pub for lunch. The website didn’t tell us much but we decided to go anyway. Was greeted by a very friendly member of staff, we ordered our drinks and started looking at the menu. She immediately said she would put the drinks on a tab for us. The menu had some lovely sounding local dishes on. I opted for game pie from the specials list. It was delicious and served with carrot and swede mash, lovely crunchy sugar snap peas , mash potatoes and gravy.

We visited for the first time on Saturday evening after waiting many months for the pub to reopen and we were not disappointed. It was lovely to see that the pub was full of diners as well as drinkers in the bar and it had a lovely friendly and welcoming atmosphere. We were seated in the main restaurant and we all ordered one of the selection of pies on the menu, including one for the Vegan member of of our party (who was also offered Vegan gravy as an option 👌🏻) The food did not disappoint- the portions were generous and you could tell the pies were freshly made to order. Clear plates all round and we each had a dessert which were also delicious 😋 As new residents in the village we are so pleased to have such a good local pub on our doorstep and we shall definitely be recommending the Herdwick Inn to our friends and family when staying at our cottage.

We have been in twice for Sunday lunch and both times have been very satisfied with the quality and quantity of the meals. We both had Lamb dinners and they were cooked to perfection for us. its wonderful to have such a great pub in the village.

We were trying to find a pub near where we had walked and there are loads to choose from… This one swung it for us as they were dog friendly and when I called to ask, the gentleman who answered the phone was extremely friendly. The food is homemade and delicious, fairly priced and lots of choice. I had the ceasor salad and partner had the lasagne. Everything was clean. We didn’t wait too long for our food but long enough you know they aren’t just Wapping it in a microwave. A pub is a pub at the end of the day; it’s not fancy or modernly decorated just there to be a pit stop on our journey and we were nicely suprised at how lovely it was. Many thanks Hannah & Rob with their sausage dog.

My husband Brian & I called here today for lunch and although we had not booked we were given a very warm welcome indeed by first a lovely young lady at the bar and then from the new landlord and lady! The Herdwick Inn is spacious, very well appointed and is very well situated with great views tucked away in this cute village. We had a lovely lunch - steak pie & prawn salad both excellent in quality, portion and price - thanks to the Chef of the day Tiegan! The toilets are a delight - sadly in the UK this is one area of often poor standard - The Herdwick’s are immaculate and a credit to The Herdwick! Well done Tracy & Darren and here’s to a long and happy future at The Herdwick! We will be back🤗!!

The staff were lovely and enquired about our baby son as there was a baby living in the pub too. Sadly the food was a let down. My husband ordered lamb Henry and it was so tough and there was barely any meat on it. His starter was also sad looking but tasted nice. My sausage and mash was nice as was the accompanying veg. We both ordered crumble and custard which again presentation let it down and the crumble seemed savoury almost. We didn't complain as we were hungry and limited in options, plus our son was starting to get grouchy so we just paid and left. A bit more care on presentation and cooking of 'specials' would make this place good because as I stay staff were very attentive.

Very welcoming, fine beer and excellent (if overly generous) food, all of which is cooked to order - the new management team is doing a great job. We ate there several times during our stay in the area and were never disappointed - the welcome and genuine warmth of the landlord was much appreciated, and the prices were very reasonable. Well worth a visit.

We thought we would try the Herdwick with new management- we assumed it would be bought in food as in many pubs in Cumbria but the food was home made and very tasty

Very reasonably priced for above average pub food. Overly generous portions. Lots of locals eating so that shows to me that this pub is doing a good job.

Recently closed. May be getting refurbished. Check before making detour. Only pub in village but the Boot & Shoe in Greystoke is not far and a nice place to visit.

Beer was good, although there was only one on draught. Food arrived promptly. I had the burger which was over cooked and dry. I asked the waitress where the beef was from as there was no explanation on the menu. She asked one of the chefs who was off duty but sat in the pub, and he replied 'a cow'. I would have seen the funny side if he then went onto answer my question properly, but he just turned away and ignored me. She asked another chef and apparently they are homemade but they certainly didn't look/taste it. We had a far better meal the night before at The White Horse, just down the road at Scales and it was cheaper too.

We stayed here for one night on our way to the Cotswolds - the only downside was that we were only able to stay for one night! The dog friendly inn was just so quirky and full of charm! The rooms were ample, very clean and roomy. The food was excellent and service very quick considering that the inn was packed! Excellent dinner and breakfast menu. The service throughout our stay was top notch - definitely recommend!

We first visited here last October and returned on purpose next trip thanks to a great experience. We visited on the first night of our holiday and were met with a warm reception, great beer and food that matched our appetites after a day of hiking. We'll definitely be back year after year.

The first disappointment was the stares and awkwardness of locals who would not move to the side to let us pass to the restaurant, this behaviour carried on throughout the night when we went to the WCs.

My wife & I stayed here for four nights and such was the quality of the restaurant food, that after the first night we decided not to venture anywhere else for our meals.

Tried the deal on Steak night which is £25 for a choice of various steaks & chips plus a bottle of vino of choice (we chose Jack Rabbit California merlot, which was very nice). In fact everything was very nice and the staff friendly. We would have preferred to eat in the bar area though, as the dining area felt a bit detached, but fair enough, we hadn't booked in advance.

We dined in Bustro 1871 as part of a short break holiday at the Appleby Manor Hotel. What a lovely break this was. Our first after the Spring and Summer lockdown. The food was really good and the waiters attentive. Appleby Manor itself is a delightful hotel full of old world charm. We are returning there again for my wife's birthday in October. I shall again dine in Bistro 1871 as well as sampling the gourmet restaurant at the hotel on our second night.

Stayed here to break our journey from Central Scotland to the Peak District. Had a very pleasant chalet type room at the rear of the property with easy access. Enjoyed a drink and an evening meal in the bar with our wee dog. We both had the sirloin steak with was generous in proportion and quite tasty.Staff friendly as were the locals. Would definitely return.

Staff very welcoming into the pub. We sat in the lounge bar and had food and drink. Had the Sweet Potato Curry which was on the specials menu. Quick service and the food was really good and great portion size!
