The Herd Steak Restaurant in Bath and North East Somerset

Had another lovely meal here. Food was stunning, staff very friendly, nothing too much trouble. We come to Bath once or twice a year and would never eat anywhere else. Can't wait to go back!

Went with my boyfriend for lunch and had probably the best steak we have ever had! We had the share platter, the steak and onion rings were amazing. Will definitely be visiting again with family. The staff were extremely friend.

From the moment we arrived we felt welcomed and valued. The atmosphere is cosy and intimate and the decor considered and in keeping with the feel of the place. The steaks we had were superlative, the best we’ve ever had and, although by no means cheap, we felt excellent value. Sides were all delicious as well. Service was impeccable, Karl was friendly and attentive and extremely gracious in his hosting. He even had an extremely pleasant singing voice, carrying a rendition of Happy Birthday off very pleasingly. The only flaw with the place is that it’s almost 3 hours away from home. If they can fix that then it’d be perfect.

We enjoyed a first class meal in pleasant surroundings. Karl gave us very good service and we liked the touches of a sense of humour involved! I would highly recommend eating here.

We were in Trowbridge and wanted to try the Herd so rang, and got Karl, to try and get a booking for Friday evening, the best that he could offer , as they were fully booked, was an hour and a half slot at 7.15 . I agreed to this but then having put the phone down, we had a thought and rang Karl back and asked if we could book for lunchtime. Karl couldn’t have been more helpful and the booking was done ! We arrived at 1200 on Friday and were greeted by Karl and given the choice of seat , we took the window seat for the light ! As it was lunch and we intended to have steak , it was decided after guidance from Karl to share the starter , which was pate and then ordered our rib eye steaks . Mrs K had a glass of cava, and was very pleased with her choice, while we waited. The steaks arrived were perfectly cooked and we had them accompanied by garlic mushrooms, creamed spinach and rosemary and garlic baby potatoes, the ensemble was exquisite from the first to last mouthful. We had a glass of red , Merlot for Mrs K and a Cabernet Sauvignon for me. Then having let it all settle we were tempted by Karl to indulge in a dessert , Mrs K had the sticky toffee pudding and I had the vanilla rice pudding with Brûlée top and dates that was delicious. We finished off the meal with a wobbly coffee with Tia Maria and it was an amazing end to our lunch time adventure. We will be going back very soon , Karl could not have been more helpful and was an absolute star.

Sadly they only have one but the business has a very good potential to become bigger with such a tasty steak. I believe they should expand to the North West. We love this steak and hope they keep it as it is.

Excellent food let down by extortionate price of drinks. Have tap water. They charged £9 for a bottle of £1.99 Aldi German lager.

This is a friendly restaurant with a nice atmosphere, we went for a birthday lunch, 9 adults. The steaks were great and competitively priced. I would have appreciated bigger portions of the sides as it would have been easier to share them for a large group and kept the total cost down a little.

We had a wonderful visit to The Herd! The food was delicious & the portions were perfect. The steak was excellent & the pesto gnocchi was a great option for those who aren’t keen on steak. I’d also recommend getting sides to share as the chips were fantastic as well. The staff were friendly & helpful, especially Karl. This restaurant is worth the visit for a special occasion or nice meal while traveling! Be sure to make a reservation so you are guaranteed to be able to dine here.

2nd time back and it just gets better, loved every moment from the minute we walked in. Can’t really describe the food it’s that good we will definitely come back

Excellent food, nicely prepared, good service and well priced

Visited this establishment by mistake thinking I had booked a table so no wonder the staff member was unable to find my booking but helpfully provided a table. The food ordered was reasonable however the access to the restaurant is down several flights of narrow stairs and the restaurant itself is cramped dark and furnished like a roadside caffe. Plates provided were cold a very basic requirement and pet hate of mine. Would not recommend this restaurant

Visited on the 10th - my partner had a Porterhouse and I had the rib eye both were excellently cocked and tasted superb. Perhaps I had imbibed a little too much alcohol due to the food and atmosphere but the place is spot on if you are looking for a quality steak fix

Entering from Argyle Street, you follow a twisting hallway down several flights of stairs (all well signposted) and enter the restaurant to wonderful aromas of fresh food sourced locally and cooked to order - no pre-prepared foods here! Lilly & I had reserved a table as part of our wedding anniversary celebrations, the owners greeted us wishing us happy anniversary and provided us with a glass of champagne to celebrate with them. The menus is fantastic, with unique options such as Pepper Rings and sauteed Sweet Potato, with occasional specials added - on our visit an incredibly tasty Scallops dish with pea puree and ham. The service was very personal, without being rushed on intrusive and we had plenty of time to relish the excellent food and drinks. Steaks were cooked perfectly to our individual requirements and the quality of the beef was superb! The Herd has replaced our previous "best steak restaurant" (Glasgow - still worth a visit) and we look forward to our next return to Bath to enjoy the quality, friendly atmosphere and value for money offered by The Herd!

Where do we start, my wife and I booked in advance as it was highly recommended. How right we were, from the beautifully quirky walk from the entrance to a wonderful restaurant in a magnificent low beamed cellar just started an amazing evening. The reception from the staff was so good, firnedly, welcoming and put you totally at ease and a lovely range of drinks. Then the food, wow...just wow, we ordered the sharing platter, medium rare, amazing double cooked chips, onion rings, sauces and a salad. The steaks rib,sirloin and fillet were cooked immaculately, medium rare melt in the mouth and clearly fine local highest quality. The bill was ridiculous, for the quality, the ambience and the friendly service and atmosphere of other diners I'd have paid double. 3 If you're in Bath and enjoy beautiful top quality food, service, and a genuinely unique ye olde venue, go to the Herd. Thanks to all the staff, Karl was our primary server, top man, thanks again we will return when we are back in Bath. Danny and Vicki. 06/04/24.

I'm going to preface by saying I eat out a lot. A hell of a lot. As in it would be easier to list how many times a week I don't eat out. The atmosphere is good, the service is great, the waiter was amazing and witty and funny and knowledgeable. The wine was good. The truffle chips great. The salads good. Was it the best steak I have ever had? No. But it is certainly up there. Good grub and worth a visit.

Nice, but the type of place to charge extra for chips, and service charge. There are nicer places that don't.

Found this place by chance when walking down by the river and what a little gem it was! We got the sharing platter and the food was amazing some of the best steak we have had would defo recommend!!

The best steak in town! If you come by the main street, you'll see it has a standing banner and you have to go to the lower ground. If one portion is too big for you, I recommend taking the share platter.

Excellent. Steak was perfect! Mushrooms were so good and the starter was on point. The decor was funky with a great atmosphere, we entered via Argyle Street that made it an experience (corridors & stairs). The staff were really friendly and recommended a lovely ale. Really worth a visit! Highly recommended.

Amazing food always cooked on point, service welcoming and amazing knowledge

Fantastic meal to kick off our 30th Wedding Anniversary celebrations. We had the grilled king prawns to start and the Legendary Sharing Platter for main. Steak was cooked to perfection. Great ambiance, and we were looked after by Karl and the team who were very friendly and attentive.

I had the Herb Bruschetta followed by the Ribeye with the Spinach, Gorgonzola & Walnut Salad. All the dishes were delicious. I asked for my steak to be cooked rare and my dining companion wanted medium. Both steaks were cooked to perfection (which doesn’t always happen elsewhere). Would definitely go back to The Herd again….

A buzzing, small boutique restaurant specialising in steak. And delicious it was. We had the sharing board of fillet, ribeye and sirloin...with a red wine reduction and blue cheese sauce...onion rings and delicious fries. With a side of garlic mushrooms and seasonal vegetables. The food, and service was incredible and attentive and a special experience with genuine attentiveness in a romantic but busy basement setting. Atreat for a special occasion Top marks

Well...my grand mother was Argentinian and I must have been a lion in a previous life. I love meat! Still... It is my taste and we all have our own taste, try it and judge it by yours. I've tried some of the best meat restaurants in the cities I've visited but Miami, Hamburg and Lisbon are the places where I repeat my visits, I could name all the restaurants I've visited and have a good memory about the enjoyment of great meat. I looked at 3 different lists regarding the best meat restaurants of Bath and The Herd was in all 3. My taste must be very different from the people that contributed to these rankings. My wife had the fillet and I had the porterhouse. She he's more forgiving than I am so I took her "good but I've had better" as a negative comment. Let me put my comment this way, if you expect a porterhouse with decent thickness, order a t-bone, the one I've seen was taller A "slim" porterhouse does not allow it to be cooked rare, you will get a medium one. Slim porterhouses should not exist, be called something else or they should show the clients the cuts before... I would have chosen something else. Again just my taste. No photos but I could post some of the best porterhouse and other cuts I've had, they would certainly look better letting taste to the ones who tried it...

Absolutely fantastic! An impromptu supper on a Sunday night and I'll definitely be back. Karl was absolutely brilliant, recommended a perfect wine to go with our meal and generally just a wonderful chap. We were so surprised to see it slammed on a Sunday eve which goes to show how highly it's regarded and with GREAT reason. The food is sublime, expertly cooked. Don't recommend vegetarians as it does what it says on the tin. That said brilliant veggies on offer, mushrooms and spinach cannot be beaten!! Anyone with mobility issues be warned, lots of steps down to the venue and loos on another floor. Cannot more highly recommend, I'll be back! (Sammy and Carl)

Nice restaurant down lots of stairs into a light, bright basement. quirky and interesting. The steaks are top class, tender and full of flavour. Excellent cooking, we will be back soon!

Booked a table for lunch at the Herd as we were craving steak. Expectations met. We launched straight into the sharing platter for £65 at the time of this review. 8oz ribeye, 8oz sirloin and 4oz fillet - all cooked to medium rare. Tender and flavourful. My personal favourite was the fillet! Each cut was cooked to the right doneness. It comes with twice cooked chips and onion rings but we ordered extra. The creamed spinach and seasonal veg because I like to balance my meal more. Turns out it was too many sides for the two of us. I think they do allow substitutions but we were greedy. The only criticism I have would be that the sauces are a little runny. The restaurant wasn’t busy at Saturday lunchtime. I can envision it being a popular dinner option. Our waiter served us well. All in all it was £40pp which is a good price. Added to my steak restaurant list!

Great food and service, highly recommended

One of the best rib eye steaks I have ever had. I had it medium and just melted in your mouth. Taste was first class and accompaniments of mushrooms, onion rings and double cooked chips were all cooked perfectly. It wasn’t that busy when we were there admittedly but the service was very attentive and food was cooked and served quickly. Will definitely be looking to go back again.

Josh and Leah were very attentive and took care of our needs. We were a table of 5 and despite food being abit delayed, it was all worth it. However, it would have been nice if there was some garnish as it was abit empty.

Several visits now and on each occasion everything was great. From initial greeting to service and of course the food has been excellent.

If you don't enjoy it, it's your own fault. T-bone steak here is as good as anywhere on the continent. The serving staff are professional and knowledgable. I was embarrassed by the table beside us with ridiculous demands and complaints. This is as good as it gets. If you're hoping for better, good luck.

We were in Bath visiting the Christmas markets and I had once eaten at The Herd before after watching the rugby nearby. We walked past several Steak restaurants to get to The Herd, through the rain and were so delighted we did! The food is great, really nice atmosphere and one of the best meals we’ve had this year. Food was great and service was also attentive thanks Josh an enjoyable experience. Such a disappointment that the team did not read my special request that was discussed and noted when I booked the table. It was my son’s 21st and it was noted on my booking to bring dessert with a birthday theme with sparklers. Unfortunately no one read the booking notes so attention to detail could really be improved. After all you are only 21 once. If you want to wow customers a little more, attention to customer experience would enhance your fab food and table service.

Had the 3 steak sharing platter, all 3 steak were cooked perfectly. Definitely would go back.

Amazing dinner. The best we had in our 3 weeks trip in UK. Warm and cozy ambiance with soft lounge music. Karl was diligent with our orden and kind in all the moment. My fiance and I will come back to have another meal before we leave Bath.

This is bar far the best steak I have had in England. The steak was tender and juicy and full of flavor and the service was wonderful.

If you want to choose a very stylish restaurant I think this is a good choice! But I don't think the style is worth the money. My dining experience was poor. The level of the steak is what any steakhouse can produce, and some of the thick beef even tastes of ox blood, so I ate truffle fries for almost an hour. During this hour, there was a blonde waitress in the restaurant who would ask people loudly and smiling about their dining experience, like how you feel about the food…(if she wasn't so loud, we might not have noticed), but she didn't ask us, and even handed us the bill with a straight face when we asked for it, which made me feel very disrespected. At the checkout, a waiter asked for our opinion, and when I told him I was not satisfied, he simply apologized. Anyway, I don't think this is a restaurant worth going to on a lovely evening. The people here are cold even colder than the weather tonight!

We had the T-bone steak, 2 sides and a starter for two people and it was the perfect amount of food! The merlot was a fair price and a really good wine. Josh was lovely, thank you for a nice meal!

We visited Bath for our Anniversary and decided on the Herd as it had good reviews. I ordered a medium 10 Oz Rib Eye with extra marbling, £27.95 without any trimmings so expected it to be great. My wife ordered a sirloin. Mine came out black and about the size of a quarter pound burger without the bun. I cut into it, already disappointed and sure enough completely overdone. Burnt is the only description I can use so I sent it back. My wife carried on as hers wasn’t very warm to start with. I cook a steak how I like it 3 mins each side so after 22 minutes my wife had long since finished (and yes I did time it) I gave up and said we were leaving, at which point they said it was ready but we had our coats on and we’re stood by the till. Anyway we left £62.33 lighter in the pocket and very disappointed. They could have done the right thing and not charged us but no, That was after I disputed the £25.95 bottle of wine, 2/3rds of which was left so they halved that as a gesture, still £62.33! Shameful quality and no real intention to do anything other than relieve us of money. They could have come over at any point and said it won’t be long or similar. Top end price, bottom end steak and service, disgraceful.

I have never been to the Herd before, I went for the first time today and honestly, it was absolutely delicious! Would suggest it to anyone. Lovely experience.

Please be aware on quantity of steps to get inside . Once inside, atmosphere n food brilliant. Could not fault service but only given 4 as we were not advised on specials. Example, scallops. However we were shown an alternative route out of this fantastic find.

Karl is a fantastic host! He was helpful and engaging. We watched him work the room with efficient elegance, he made our visit all the more enjoyable. The food was fantastic, steaks were cooked to perfection. The starter sharing board is highly recommended. He remembered that it was my teenager’s and my husband’s birthday and wished them both a happy birthday. Thank you Karl for making our day. Thank you for speaking Cantonese to us. Hope if we come to bath again that Karl will be there to greet us.

Overall a good restaurant. The meat is good but not amazing.

My daughter and I were looking for somewhere to eat, and stumbled onto this resturant. What a touch, we had to wait 30 mintues, as we hadnt booked, but they really looked after us. We had the combo, Fillit, ribeye, and Sirlion. All were cooked to perfection, couldnt tell you much about the double fried chips and my daughter finished them off. Its nice to see pictures of what actually gets served, I salute you. Good luck guys, you have a lovely little resturant. My only comment would be nice to have some bone marrow and perhaps spinach on the menu, my preferances.

Very last minute cancellation and we were able to get a table. Hadn’t done much research but I’ve always loved a good steak house. I was absolutely blown away with the quality of food and the service. My family and I will definitely be going the next time we visit bath!

Exceptional restaurant, food, ambiance, staff, in fact absolutely everything is outstanding. I had ribeye hubbie had fillet steaks and in all honesty have never tasted steak like them before so flavoursome and tender just wow. The crème brûlée and rice pudding with ginger ice cream is a must just devine beyond words. A must to anyone looking for an outstanding steak restaurant in Bath, will most certainly be revisiting and highly recommend booking

Fantastic fillet steak and blue cheese sauce, one of the best steak houses in the area. Staff very accommodating, good intervals between serving courses so you don't feel rushed and can enjoy the evening. Evening on street parking available nearby, around a 5-10 minute walk. A couple of good pubs in the area if you fancy a pre dinner drink.
