The Head of Steam in Liverpool

Went to The Head of Steam for the football and it was fantastic. Had a great selection of beers so went for some Belgians and some vault city cans. Lauren sorted food out for us and it was fantastic. Thanks to the whole team, will be coming back!

Rubbish selection of ciders, loads of beers available all around the large bar but no ciders except for bog standard rekordalig and Aspall. Please get a decent selection of craft ciders, off the top of my head I can think of Lilleys Cider, Snail Bank, Broadoak, Sea Cider, all of which are amazing and sell really well but are never available here. If you don't like beer or cocktails this place isn't for you. Ended up buying 2 beers one for me and one for my mate at a cost of over £16! Dearest place around. Also the music was far too loud I visited midweek and it was booming but the place was half empty and could hardly talk to my mates.

Had lovely lunch here today. Food portions of good size and value for money. Pool tables, sports on tv and decent bar and service.

Delicious cocktails, great staff and great view to people watch. Very much took advantage of the 2 offer on cocktails and recommend the Island Punch, Steamy Martini & Raspberry Ice Tea.

The party is over, managed to get one drink in at the bar by a familiar face. However, was totally ignored by the bar staff after I directly made a query about food. Literally all the white people that came to the bar whilst I was standing there were served with me looking like a lemon. I guess the local race riots have had an effect on the city. Update: 27/03/25 Totally ignored at the bar whilst a white couple who came in after me were served first. Blondie at the at the bar ‘well they came in first’. I replied, ‘I watched them walk in’ Blondie ‘Oh well’ shrugged her shoulder and turned away from me. Green book negative entry.

Great music and nice burger! Recommend the Korean burger, normal prices for city center :)

We had a lovely sister catch up today. Staff are super friendly very helpful and knowledgeable about beers on offer. Food was excellent (pizzas & fries) The only thing was a bottle of Sauvignon cost £29.95!! I mean that is more expensive than fab restaurants close by… Very shocked and disappointed, we had a good time and spent a fair amount of money on food and drinks and then ended with a £30 bottle of wine, that’s way too expensive for a pub atmosphere and feels like taking advantage of customers. Won’t be doing that again rather go to a restaurant and pay £24-25 mark up. Such a shame…..

Good beers, but the place is a bit discusting. No toilet paper, water on the toilet floor, sticky menues and counter. And this was at 2 pm.

One of my favourite pubs in Liverpool! The staff are super friendly and they have a huge choice of beers. Maisie behind the bar was super helpful on our last visit! She has a very good knowledge of the beers and gives good recommendations! We go here every time we visit Liverpool 🙌🏻

My son told me about this pub,it's a lovely spread out real ale pub,plenty choice of beers ,new ones always added,plenty of screens showing sport ,didn't try the food but it did look good,we will next time ,a lovely mixture of couples,families, groups ,bar staff kind & friendly and knowledgeable about the beers ,music was spot on

Perfect little pub. Had lunch here Monday afternoon, was a little quiet but it was early.....although the food and service were both perfect! The food was fresh, tasty and well presented. Fella and young lady behind the bar were both friendly and helpful. We will be back.

Jade and Sarah on the bar made the experience. The loveliest girls with all the time in the world for their customers. I would come back just to see them.

Had 2 different stouts, ok, not outstanding; but the prices were, 6.80 and 6.50, disgusting greed. Place looks nice until you see the tables, quite grubby. Asked price of a Guinness £6.50. Just down the road you can get a Guiness in Kells of Eden opposite Fusion for £3 a pint which shows just how this place is ripping you off!

Can't fault the bar, but like a lot of places , your beer is a bit more expensive, cheaper bars around, but you get what you pay for, lovely place to spend time in

On a bitterly cold December night my twin brother and I were pub and bar hopping around this part of the city when we decided to drop anchor at The Head Of Steam Pub, been here many times over the years, always had a good time and so it proved on our latest visit. This is a great looking pub, the interior is superb, its light and airy, an island style serving bar dominates the main room, superb decor and furnishings, cool wall art, big screens to enjoy the sport and plenty of seating options spread throughout this pub, its just a wonderful beer destination. On our latest visit here we had a bit of a beer festival between us, beer selection in here is phenomenal, we enjoyed craft beers,continental beers and ciders ,Beavertown Brewery ,Krusovice Brewery, Boss Yeastie Boys,Rekorderlig Brewery, Aspall Brewery were our selection, every beer and cider served in excellent condition by very knowledgeable staff who as an added bonus are genuinely pleased to see you in their pub,we had a great evening in here ,couldn't fault anything about our visit, can't wait to go again next time we're in Liverpool City Centre hopefully very soon. The Head Of Steam Pub is easy to locate along Hanover Street, a street and area teeming with pubs, bars, cafe's and restaurants and some very cool architecture. Opening hours are; Monday to Sunday, open from midday. A great beer destination, most definitely well worth checking out if you're in the area.

Loved this place great atmosphere

We booked a table for 5 on Sunday 22nd December so that we could watch the NFL. Staff were amazing, really helpful, put us at a good table and put the NFL on for us as soon as we asked. Food was really decent and as ever the ale selection was excellent. All in all we had a really good afternoon and evening!

We organised a big social event at the Head of Steam Liverpool and they were incredible throughout, cordoning off a section of the bar, allowing us to move heaps of tables, and keeping us supplied with a wide range of pizzas, and catered for a wide range of dietary requirements. The staff were particularly friendly and helpful throughout the night, particularly the bar manager. Would definitely recommend.

£12.30 for a pint and a half of Beavertown gamma ray. Even dick Turpin wore a mask. Funny that this beer didn’t have the price next to it on the board.

Staff funky but fun, great selection of local beers and ciders. Actually a needle in a haystack in Liverpool is never too busy but the games room in the back oh baby. £1 on card for pool and you’re set. Mario watching over u as u become only a winner. 1 wonky pool table and good luck finding a stick with an end but I’m loyal to this marvellous establishment. It’s like the uncle that’s been through rehab multiple times but still sleeps rough, got its flaws but love it all the same.

Loved my experience here! And so great that there’s so many vegan options. Maisie and Andy in particular were extremely lovely and helpful. Come here and you won’t regret it!

Called in today for a little drink after shopping it was busy but thats expected the staff were handling it great , with smiles on there faces , and a big shout out to jade who went out of her way to find a seat for us and also remember my drink from last visit she's a absolute pleasure

Visit late on Friday after seeing Paul Heaton at M&S arena Maisie greeted us with such a lovely smile and a friendly approach Freya also was cheerful and seemed happy in her work well done to them both keep up the fantastic work

Came here for a corporate event with members of a team, we didn’t expect much but Jade behind the bar helped us all out and was never far away when we wanted drinks or more food, Jade refused to take a tip which I think is very commendable in the current climate, what an asset to your team she is.

I'll be avoiding this pub in Liverpool city centre from now on. Despite being dog friendly, which is why we went there, I got fleeced by one of the bar staff when I paid in cash for a drink. I handed the girl £20 for a gin and tonic and only got back £2+ in change. When I queried it with her, she told me I only gave her a tenner, which is a total lie as I only had one twenty left as I had planned to use the rest to pay for parking. I was with friends I hadn't seen in ages so I didn't want to make a big fuss and get the manager involved but I wouldn't be surprised if she does it on a regular basis so I'll be avoiding this pub from now on as there are plenty in the city centre to choose from! #adiós

To say we were disappointed today in this pub is an understatement..We have always enjoyed our Christmas shopping day with a Breakfast here as a pit stop. Today the food was beyond poor! The so called Full English was a disgrace. One rubber egg..one cold sausage.. the smallest piece of fatty bacon..half a cold tomato and 3 tiny over cooked mushrooms and the worst was the jug of cold beans. Even the toast was thin, hard and tastless which we had to request butter for. The staff however were friendly and helpful.. even when we asked for milk for our coffee and the beans heating up again!! This was at a price of £8.99 which isn't horrendously expensive but for what you got was certainly not value for money. We will not be eating there ever again. Be warned ⚠️ Praise your bar staff but have a serious word with your chef.

It was a Saturday. Tables were not cleaned after guests for hours. Almost no staff to pour drinks and most cane across slow, lazy and grumpy. Waited at the bar approx 15-20 mins to get a drink with not many customers waiting. On a good note interior is ok, no need to book a table.

Mi compañero me trajo un cóctel de moda antigua y volvió con uno dije que debían ser las 2 , cuando volvió le dijeron que no podía tomar el segundo porque no pedía 2 . Cuando lo cuestioné, me dijeron que tenías que pedir dos o solo te dan uno. Así que pagamos 11 libras. 95 por uno. Nos fuimos no contentos en absoluto fuimos al salón 69 a pocas puertas de distancia ofreciendo un cóctel por £ 6. 95 o 2 por 10 libras, fue al bar pidió un cóctel y dijeron: ¿Quieres 2? ¿Por qué no pudieron hacer eso en The Head of Steam? Creo que fue vergonzoso. Así que por favor asegúrate de pedir 2 si vas a este pub. No volveremos

Good selection of beer. Unfortunately when we went on a Saturday afternoon there was only two members of staff serving and long waits for drinks.

Really comfy, good deals on cocktails, nice chilled vibe!

Came here for a few drinks and a bite to eat, had a fantastic time, great prices and decent food. The staff were superb and very welcoming and friendly, big shout out to jade who looked after us and made the best old fashioned cocktails, thanks jade.

Lovely Pub The cocktails are reasonable

Went in with my wife last Sunday and found a table that was not reserved so we could have a drink and watch the football. Halfway through our drink the barman or manager. Big guy with a beard. Came to our table and said he had a reservation for it and needed us to move. I told him that was ridiculous as no label was on it, but he said he could find us another table somewhere else. I dud get angry as his attitude and in fact some other customers nearby voiced their disgust at his attitude. We dud get up and leave and vowed never to return. If this is how they treat customers don’t go there.

We went into the venue for a drink and to watch the football. A lot of the tables were reserved but we found one that wasn’t. We bought some drinks and after half an hour and just before the match was to start one of the staff came over and said we would have to move as the table was reserved. We explained that there was no reservation form on the table but he said he knew but that he had just taken a reservation for it. We said but we have been sitting here for half an hour and that he should t have taken a booking when the table was already occupied. He said sorry but that he had and we would have to vacate the table. We argued but he was adamant. By then I said I wouldn’t stay anyway as everyone was looking at us and would never go back again. Other customers were saying it was disgraceful. So even if you find a table and are sitting on it the company will take a reservation for it and ask you to vacate it. I will definitely never go back.

Love the beers just can’t stand the whole place taken over by loud plebish football commentary on match days. Awful.

We went for a drink at the Head of Steam in Liverpool on Saturday. The atmosphere was good but the place was filthy. Tables stacked out with empty glasses and spilt drink all over the tables. I didn’t see any staff clearing tables/wiping so I presume they were short staffed. Do better Head of Steam. We left because of how dirty everywhere was and it was before 6pm.

We first visited in mid-July for a family gathering and were warmly greeted by the staff. The tables were clean, menus were already placed, and the cocktail and beer selection was exquisite. The bartender even made us a raspberry iced tea with a twist, which we all loved. Unfortunately, our most recent visit didn’t live up to the previous experience. When we sat in a booth, we noticed some food on the seating. We tried another booth, but it was filled with dirty plates, so we chose to stay in the first one. The table was sticky, and there were no menus, so we went to the bar to ask if our order could be taken at the table, as it had been on our last visit, and if the table could be wiped down. The bartender, a large man with a beard, ignored us initially, and when I said “excuse me,” he rudely replied that he would “sort it.” Adding to the disappointment was the poorly executed Christmas display at the entrance. It felt hastily put together and lacked any real holiday spirit—it seemed more like an afterthought than an inviting festive touch. when we reach the bar we were disappointed by the quality of the craft beers, as several tasted off, likely due to poor storage or tap maintenance. Worse yet, the bar area had a noticeable issue with beer flies, which further detracted from the experience. Having previously visited the Cardiff location, we noticed that the standards at this site were not the same. The staff appeared less organized and knowledgeable than on our last visit. While the arcade games in the back excited the children, the quality was disappointing. The walls displayed mainstream game characters, but the actual consoles featured inferior, likely Chinese, copies—misleading to say the least. The food also failed to meet expectations. Unfortunately, after this encounter, I won’t be returning. I would recommend saving your money and choosing a more family-friendly establishment.

Before starting a week's holiday in Albufeira my twin brother and I decided to jump the train down from Kirkby to Liverpool City Centre and visit some of the great pubs our city is justifiably famous for ,first pub we visited was The Head Of Steam ,been here before on many occasions, always had a good time and so it proved on our latest visit. This is a great looking pub ,interior is warm and inviting, an eye catching serving bar dominates the main room, cool decor and furnishings, great wall art and plenty of seating options spread throughout this pub, its just a really good pub to unwind in. We had a study of their very impressive beer range ,in the end we decided to try a Portuguese beer to get us in the mood to our upcoming holiday to Portugal and went for beers from Central De Cervejas Brewery ( Sagres beer ) these were served in excellent condition being iced cold and sparkling, we chilled out and soaked up the great vibe in this busy and popular pub while we sipped our beers. Beer was so good ,really tasty,a lager style beer, very easy to drink, a totally thirst quenching beer indeed. We really enjoyed our beers in here and the great vibe so much so that we ended up staying for another beer each before we moved on and although our visit was only fleeting as on every other visit to here we had a great time. The Head Of Steam is easy to locate along Hanover Street. Opening hours are; Monday to Sunday, open from midday. Well worth checking out if you're in the area.

Came here on the 31st of August, I had an old fashioned using bourbon, I enjoyed it so much that over a month later on my next visit to the city, I had to make the same pit stop, and of course have the same drink! As luck would have it I recognised the young lady behind the bar who had made the drink previously, needless to say it was just as amazing as the first! You’ve got a great member of staff there guys! She sure knows her stuff. Thank you again my dear x

We went in for a few beers, but got stung on the price of the first so we left. £7.90 a pint for a 5.4% Beavertown Gamma Ray which you can buy in Tesco. My fault for not asking the price in advance I guess but we were stunned

Real Ale. 1 star today. It's a real shame that this Head of Steam doesn't really have the footfall to look after their real ale anymore. It used to have a great selection, and it was looked after. Just left half a pint of a known stout I like.

It took exactly 43 min to get a pizza from payment to serving. Basically empty pub and it took 43min?! And ”pizza” was horrible. My guess is that they went to a local Tesco, got frozen pizza from there and microwaved it. Beer selection is good, just don’t eat here. Ever.

I've been coming here once a month for just under a year now and I like the place! My only issue is that the prices are quite steep compared to other places sadly.

Popped in a couple of days ago on my 1st trip to Liverpool for a quick drink. Ended up tripping over (my own fault) and injuring my toe, causing a lot of bleeding that wouldn't stop. The team, especially Michelle couldn't have been more helpful, administering first aid perfectly. She managed to dress my wound as well as possible and direct us to the nearest A&E where I was seen and patched up within an hour. Can't thank you enough, Michelle for doing everything you possibly could and to the gent who offered me a sugary drink in case I felt faint. 5 stars all the way!

Good options of pub games, solid food and great array of beers

Great pub, good pub food, wonderful music, smiling service!

We have come to Head of Steam regulary for years with no issues. It was our go to pub. However, it is now under new management and after a couple of visits we won't be returning again. We find the new manager quite abrasive as she told us off for ordering separately to the same table. The food and drink options have been cut down and have gone downhill as well. The service is much slower now too. Very very disappointed.

HOS Liverpool is one of my favourite places to go for a drink in Liverpool. The atmosphere is always friendly and lively and the choice of drinks are vast. I'm not usually inclined to order food but did this last weekend. Unfortunately, there was a bit minor issue which meant that I had to ask for the food to be replaced. Michelle to the rescue! Michelle promptly and professionally replaced my food quickly and without any awkward atmosphere. She continued to ensure that I was satisfied and maintained her professionalism through out and until I left. HOS, Michelle and your team in Liverpool are a credit to the HOS family

Wonderful pub. Great atmosphere for couples and families. Food is good especially the pizza and loaded fries. Very friendly staff that are always smiling. Pool tables in the back if you like. Would definitely recommend stopping by. Lots of beer on tap as well as wine and spirits.

Did the lunch deal £10.50 for meal and drink. Vegan options plenty, but the 'fried vegan chicken' was just strips of 'meat' not fried at all? My 'zeafood' tacos were good, but one piece of calamari and one piece of shrimp is a rip off!

It's fine but expensive as expected..two drinks for £14....the interior was nice though...lots of wood and bench type seating.

The beer selection is very good with over ten draft, craft beers, handpulls and even more variety in the fridge. The decor is starting to tire and the carpets are sticky.

The food here was just meh. I had the steak burger and my other half had the triple burger. It was too much food and just didn’t really taste like anything, and the chips were cold. Was however a great selection of beers and honestly would recommend it to drink in not eat in. Not a lot else to say.
