Stayed for a night, was a nice place. Only downside was the food. Expensive burger van food. Had a meal at a service station on the way home that was half the price and twice the quality.

I have never experienced such poor service ever! The woman literally shouted in my face for moving the dirty bowls. Other people in the pub were looking at us in shock it was unbelievable! Myself and more importantly my 10 and 11 year old children were really upset. We obviously left so can’t comment much on the food but the bowls left on the table were half full and didn’t look great so I can only assume the food is as bad as the service. I’m a 41 year old secondary school teacher and I have honestly never been made to feel so awful! I would advise no one's goes to this establishment ever!

After six days walking St Cuthbert’s Way, we arrived on the Holy Island and The Ship Inn. Our reception was the warmest and most enjoyable of our entire adventure. Paul was the perfect host. The breakfast was the best Full English Breakfast of our time in the Borderlands. We especially appreciated local cask ales such as Holy Island Blessed Bitter. Most memorable were Paul’s stories about the Holy Island and the Inn. Staying at the Ship Inn was the perfect way for us to celebrate our 62-mile pilgrimage. Give Paul our love when you show up.

Extremely unfriendly. We were a group of 8, but they refused to let us sit on a table of 8. The man behind the bar said there were too many of us, despite the bar being half empty. If the tables were reserved, they didn't make that clear. Perhaps the bar is not big enough for non whites folks.

Great little pub. Poor barman rushed off his feet, it was so busy. However this didn't affect the quality of the food, which was really good.

We spent the day on the Island and after a long walk and explore came across this gem of a pub. We sat outside as we were fortunate to have a nice sunny day. It is a wonderfully peaceful suntrap. The food was wonderful aswell. Had the scampi, which was perfect. Would definitely recommend.

I had the sheer misfortune of dining at The Ship Inn, and it was a catastrophe from start to finish. We arrived before 7 PM, only to be told the chef was “too busy” to serve anything but a miserable £5 bowl of chips, despite the place being completely empty. After some frustrating back-and-forth, we managed to get some samosas, though I wish we hadn’t bothered. The samosas priced at £10, were revolting—I’ve had better from the bargain bin at Tesco. As for the chips, they weren’t even recognisable as chips, just a poorly cut potato in four sad chunks. The service? Absolutely dreadful. The staff clearly couldn’t care less about the customers or the job. Not a smile, not a hint of hospitality—just sour faces that made you want to walk right out. This place is an utter disaster—don’t waste your time or money on this sinking ship.

The atmosphere of what should have been a welcoming pub was muted, the bar man was gruff not such a genial host, he was just short of rude with 3 customers whilst I was at the bar, telling one couple they can't move table until there food arrives and another that hot drinks were not available at lunchtime even with food he then moaned about those customers to me and another customer, so unprofessional, his attention was mostly on his Alexa machine trying to get it to play YMCA and got so annoyed with the unobtrusive black box when it failed to honour his command. I ordered food and drink for us both after finding out the soup of the day was Tomato, I was happy with that but it was not a favourite of my wife's some got her a ham salad sandwich and we were to share a bowl of chips. We noticed worryingly how the food was delivered to other tables, there was no finesse and on occasion the young girl came from the kitchen with food took a lap around the bar and returned the food back to the kitchen. My wife's sandwich arrived and the chips, I said to the girl that I'll wait for my soup she said nothing and never came back either to deliver soup or explain why I wasn't getting any. The food we had was very good and I have no complaints. Later I totted up my bill from the menu and realised that the soup had never been ordered in the first place. This is an established venue in a very vibrant location with much passing trade, I not sure that the staff realise that their personal touch is actually impersonal and will mean this reviewer will not return

We didn't stay but only had a bar meal, the location of the pub and interior is great, it's dog friendly in the bar or outside. We ordered large fish and chips, it's not a particularly cheap option and we expected good quality, it looked good on the plate but the batter wasn't nice and the fish was dry, bland and horrid, I suspect it was from frozen. The chips were actually potato wedges, sorry but I expect chips to be chips. The mushy peas were ok.

Pub it's self is full of character. Landlord ruff and ready but let's discuss the food. Looked beautiful but never had a peice of fish so sawdusty and it was very pricey for what it was too.

We did not stay at the Hotel but we did manage to book a table today for dinner. What a gem, staff were so helpful and made you feel really welcome. The food was outstanding, a great shame it's not my local I'd be in there every day. Fabulous atmosphere, peaceful and relaxing. Dog friendly 👍👍👍. An excellent all rounder.

We came here 5 years ago and had the best crab sandwich! Prejudiced with this memory, we returned last week. The crab sandwich was okay, if not a little bitter. The salad was dressed with an odd topping (perhaps raspberry flavour). The crisps were nice but for £16, I was hoping for chips. The kids sausages were as cheap as they come. The guy behind the bar was friendly.

I've just read the 2* review and feel that must have been an off day. We had an evening meal there on the night the Crown was closed as it was being used for the filming of 28 years on. As you can imagine the place was heaving as the pub tried to fit everyone in, even setting places at the bar. The staff were rushed but still had time to pass pleasantries. Food was good honest pub grub and came out promptly. I had the fish and chips which was truly large and lovely crispy batter. Well done the Ship.

The service is abysmal. The bar owner made sure every person who walked in knew that he was the only person in, he was serving/cooking/clearing tables/washing glasses and putting them away ect. It felt like he was looking for pity, I’m a bar owner myself and know how tiring and stressful the industry is, but either make the decision to stay closed or just serve drinks and not food. I see why no one else worked there, it was bad enough being a customer. There wasn’t one interaction that was polite, everyone was made to feel like a nuance. I hope to go the landlord washed his hands before cooking, as they were filthy. £4 for a coke is unheard of even in London. The only good thing is dogs can go into the pub and beer garden. The manner of the landlord was the talk of the whole island who had visited the pub the same day. Go to a coffee shop, stay clear of this pub unless you want your visit ruined.

Food is ok, and good beer, however the barman(owner?) Was very miserable, we did not feel welcome. 😞 reading the other reviews, it appears this is normal. Maybe the owner should sell up, and let someone else take on the gorgeous little pub.

This is probably the best value food on the island. We spent time looking for somewhere to eat during the afternoon on the island. We were staying on the island and didn’t fancy the offerings at the pubs or the hotel. The hatch is based in the grounds of a B&B just as you walk into the village. We had the hatch burgers with a portion of chips between us. The burgers were freshly made, cooked and very tasty. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The only negative is that the cutlery was rather crude…understandably it was wooden fork and knife. Quite tricky to cut anything with. So we just used our fingers. Maybe if we had asked they would have provided metal utensils. Very pleased that we chose to eat here.

We came across The Hatch as we were looking for somewhere for lunch. And we were really glad we found it. We chose the Porky Boy and Big Dog - both were full of flavour and really generous portions. Excellent service and plenty of seating in the garden. Will definitely visit again when we are next in the area as the whole menu looks delicious - on another level to your ordinary burgers and hot dogs!

Great place to visit so much to see and do. For those who love long walks, they will enjoy. The house has plenty of stairs, so be aware if mobility is an issue. I used my mobility scooter to get from the car park to the house and then to the visitor centre for some lunch with a wonder round the gift shop. With the cost of entry and food it can be expensive but the food is excellent quality. All the staff are welcoming, friendly, and ready to answer any questions.

My food was delivered cold and also had a requested sauce missing. This has never happened from Gormans before. Really disappointed

Great fish as i try not to eat chips I've only one criticism, the fish are cooked to order which i understand but they then just put them straight in a box, the grease that's left in the box makes the batter soggy and inedible. If given five minutes to drain they'd be even better. But still the best in the area.

Just had the worst ever Fish Chips and Mushy peas, and at almost £13-00 I wish I had gone to the burger place with the 'M' sign instead. The fish was mainly hardened batter, with 50% of it wafer thin and bland, no taste at all, the chips were pathetic anorexic attempts, threw nearly all away for the birds, then the mushy peas, firstly it was mainly just pea water, and the cartons are a joke, with a false bottom giving the appearance of a much larger portion of the pea juice, tasteless as well. A real poor experience overall, if I had the time I would have returned them, but was on a long drive, and at 7.30pm I was not prepared to drive back.
