Cleanliness isn't one of the positives, sticky floors and an odour of urine in the air. Furniture appears very worn and rough. The staff were not very enthusiastic, borderline rude. I would not recommend this place.

Went here of an evening since I wanted a drink. Immediately set eyes on a rough looking character, who had been taking something, since his eyes were as big as saucers. Bar staff looked on as if nothing was happening! Man started to become angry and aggressive at me for no apparent reason! Insulted me because, “He didn’t like the way I looked.” Terrible experience and I was terrified. Bar staff overheard everything, but were just as obnoxious! I will never put myself in that position again, where I was GROSSLY violated by a coke-head, whilst comments were laughed at by the horrible bar staff, I HAVE to give one star, but I really wouldn’t choose to give that! One word - OBNOXIOUS!

We had a fabulous few hours at nearby Parc Pentallta and whilst there we got talking to a local lady, who enthusiastically promoted the local area. This was our first visit to this part of Wales, so we asked her for recommendations on somewhere to eat Sunday lunch. The lady suggested the Harp Inn in Hengoed so we googled the telephone number to check availability and luckily the pub had space for us. Our first impressions of the traditional family friendly pub was that it was the hub of the community (TVs to stream live sports, a dart board & live music) with down to earth staff. We received an outstanding welcome and the pub was tastefully decorated. The pub was very busy (popular) and was spotlessly clean. My partner and I decided to order 3 courses and we ordered just the main for our young son (he would struggle to eat 3 courses). I ordered garlic mushrooms for starters, the chicken and stuffing roast dinner for my main and cheese cake for dessert. My partner selected the fish cake for his starters, the beef dinner for his main and apple crumble with custard for dessert. Our son had the chicken dinner for his main, but tasted both our starters and desserts. The roast dinners were amazing, served with a great variety of vegetables, roast potatoes, a Yorkshire pudding, homemade gravy and a selection of sauces. The food was fabulous and incredible value for money. We will definitely return again, because there was a fantastic menu including vegetarian and children meals, as well as steaks, burgers, mixed grills, curries and so on.

Went for Sunday lunch with the in laws. The bar was very noisy with a lot of shouting and swearing as a football match was on the TV. It was noisy in the restaurant, as the noise came straight through. Service was a bit amateurish, as we were asked what we wanted even though we had not had a menu. Food was just ok, but peas were like little cannonballs, and the cabbage had a tinny taste. The yorkies were good though. We finished the main, and waited at least 20 mins for pudding choice, but decided to leave instead without pudding. Went to pay, only to find the place doesn't accept cards! Not acceptable in this day and age, as we don't usually carry that much cash to pay for a meal for 6! I'll choose somewhere else next time.

Tried three times to have a meal at the Harp made a lot of excuses the first two times so phone on the third attempt to confirm they would be serving food in the evening .Turned up they asked how many people were coming I said 4 then they said a staff member phoned in sick so they wouldn't be serving food . Think they would have opened the restaurant if there was more of us won't be back.

Trip Advisor reports said this was not a place to judge by the frontage. How true that proved. Even before we both got in, the friendly local clientele were helping us and showing us the way to the restaurant. We passed through a friendly pub and the restaurant door into a whole new ambience, tastefully and playfully designed with 30s continental posters and much more. Sunday roast dinner so set main menu. Others mentioned later. Starters so good hard to choose. Spicy, tasty Goujon chicken with chili dip for one, Home-made veg soup for the other. Both piping hot just as the roast was. High score on preparation of local veg for main menu. Meat perfect. As much hot gravy as anyone could want. Staff a model to the nation. Even got to talk with owner's mum. The team have shown that efficiency, professionalism and conversation really can come together. And top-class value for modest prices. Strong attention to allergy needs though they counsel pre-notice of when coming. Dinner is mainly a weekend service at the moment with selected days for lunches. But they're working on it. It looks like one of the shining lights for socialising in the area and we truly wish it well. Anywhere near it? Don't miss it. We journeyed half an hour to get there and didn't regret a moment. Oh forgot to mention what we had no room for: the home-baked cakes, bake-on-the-spot stuff, astounding 16oz grill, etc etc. Top marks.

we had heard that the sunday lunch was good so we thought we give it a go. staff friendly enough, restaurant was nice but felt bit cold there was no smell of anything cooking which I always say is a bad sign and usually mean's everything is microwaved. Ordered one beef and one mixed meat lunch waited a bit considering there were only 5 people before us when it came what a big disappointment. I had one and half small slices of meat cut wafer thin, think most of the veg was frozen the roast pot were frozen one's and the gravy was like water no taste to the dinner at all. whoever said the sunday lunch is good must be easily pleased. sorry to be so negative but wont be coming back and would not recommend it to any of our friends.

After lengthy bad publicity through the years, went for Sunday lunch. It was amazing, steaming hot plates crammed with home cooked meat and fresh local vegetables with gravy. Came with choice of 3 meats; turkey, pork or beef or for another pound, could have all three. Ordered drinks and not long after came the dinners. Very clean, excellent service and proper linen napkins. This is truly amazing and past experiences must be truly forgotten as this is really brilliant and will return. We had all meats and each cost 8 pounds each, so bargain.

Six of us went for an evening meal. It was the best steak ever. Superb. In fact, everyone really enjoyed the food and we had really good service. Give it a try, you won't be disappointed. They also have bands playing which is very entertaining.

My boyfriend and I booked to eat here for Sunday Roast having read such good reviews about it but I must be honest it was good but not great.Cons: The gravy was very runny and quite tasteless. My mashed potato was very cold. The beef was quite dry. There were limited desserts available. Pros: We we seated very quickly and were able to chose where we would be most comfortable. The staff were very friendly and worked very hard to ensure customers had all they needed. The pork was beautiful! The cheesecake was lovely (maybe a little more cream would have been nice as the cheesecake was quite thick) Overall we had a pleasant experience. The staff were brilliant and couldn't do enough to help. The portion size was fantastic and good value for money. I just felt the food was a little tasteless. I would return here but not for a Sunday roast.

The Harp is within walking distance for us and six of us went today for Sunday lunch. The service was excellent and very friendly. The food was very good and excellent value for money. Carling was the only lager available which was disappointing as it's not the lager of choice for our group. We bought a bottle of Kumala white wine because the only wine available by the glass was Jack Rabbit, which is not very nice. I wish pubs would stop stocking it as it's awful. In fact, we probably would have stayed longer and spent more money if the lager and wine was of a better quality. We will however return to try the evening menu because it looked superb.

The Sunday lunch is excellent value for money....plenty of meat and veg and cooked to perfection at very reasonable prices. Friendly service too. The only down side is the choice of white wine, which needs improvement as not all of us locals drink cheap Jack Rabbit wine and a better selection would be appreciated. Was a nice relaxing evening and we had the place to ourselves! The pub area is separate from the restaurant and was a real local pub. The food was great, nothing special but large portions and tasty! The only thing that really let it down was the lack of Ale. Every pub/restaurant needs an Ale.Would definately recommend if ever in the area!

Ok, it's all about the pub & the meal but the landlord was a gem, couldn't have been more helpful, polite above & beyond the call of duty.Visited on a discount voucher & happy that i visited with my vegetarian son. Not only was there a sufficiently decent choice but 'mine host' said 'you name it sir & we'll try to cook it', couldn't have been more person centred or obliging.I had the chicken pie with chips for main, lots of peas on the plate but they were sweet & delicious. Starter was welsh rarebit (essentially cheese on toast to the uninitiated), delicious. Son had prawn cocktail & enjoyed that too although there was, he said, a little too much paprika? He had veggie burger for main. To me it was a fishy thing in a bap but he enjoyed it. Desssert, i had creme brulee, very nice & my son had profiteroles a plenty & polished off the lot. Decent beer was Cwrw Haf from the Tomos Watkin brewery in Swansea i think? Comfortable, very clean roomy eatery. Quirky with a South African gent running to a Welsh themed menu in parts with rarebit & cawl i think i recall? Yes, would vist again. Menu was fairly basic but what we had was very tasty. Price wise around £45 for the 2 of us (if you don't count the voucher) but that was starter, main & dessert with 5 drinks between us so not bad at all. Some parking outside off the road for about 5 cars.

I don't know if they have a new chef or if they were on holiday but this was so different to the delicious food we've had before that I couldn't believe the difference. It was all frozen: chips, onion rings, burger. Family couldn't even eat it, terrible. Used to proper cooked meals there like home cooked fresh, felt burger used to be made there not like the flat plastic thing I was given tonight. Didn't mind paying prices for what it was but not for this meal. Not going back.
