An amazingly good meal . Everything just beautiful . Go , go , go ! Unfortunately , we couldn't stay as the bedrooms were fully booked , but I hope we can come back another time . We loved the meal , the wine pairing and the staff . One of the best meals we have had.

The Hare’ at Scawton is an old pub totally refurbished and brought up to date by it’s owners, Paul and Liz. No expense has been spared and the work has been carried out in a caring and sympathetic way…….making the most of the environment and the original building. Our room was spacious, beautifully decorated and the bathroom just wonderful. Walk-in shower, large roll-top bath and everything you need. The ‘tasting menu’ was 7 courses, each one unique and frankly the attention to details was probably one of the best I have experienced. It’s not so much an excellent meal…….more like a top class culinery experience. So that’s a friendly welcome at the door, amazing bedroom, fantastic service and the best food imaginable. Not a bad recommendation!

Wonderful stay in the waters room and then dinner in the restaurant. Liz was amazing really looked after us from the minute we arrived to the minute we left. The room was fabulous and very chic loved the deco and the bed was so comfortable. Surrounded by birds in the garden it was so quiet and felt perfect for a quiet night away. The food was stunning and the cocktails were very tasty. Breakfast was lovely and not over whelming and the coffee was lovely. Will defo be back.

A wonderful evening at The Hare. It felt special from the first moment, with Liz a wonderful hostess. The ambience is relaxed yet special, a lot of attention to detail but not fussy at all. The tasting menu and wine flights were superb, interesting and subtle flavours, paired beautifully with the wines. A really special place to go. Definitely highly recommended.

Beautiful hotel, attentive customer service and the most beautiful and delicious food. We visited for my partners birthday in April. Liz (front of service) and her husband, Paul (chef) hold the key to making a stay at The Hare the most wonderful and relaxing time possible and go out of their way to make you feel like the most important guests at this small, unique and most picturesque hotel and restaurant. The rooms are very tastefully decorated with all the home comforts you would expect, including a delicious chocolate brownie ready for your arrival. The bar area is very cosy, with a beautiful fire to sit and sip delicious wine in. The restaurant is well set out with just 5 tables, making the dining experience truly exceptional. The tasting menu takes around 2.5-3 hours and is an experience second to none. After eating at many Michelin Star restaurants, the food here is nothing short of the best we have ever had. The standout dishes (although this could have been all of them) were Beef 1 (steak tartar) and the monkfish. The desert elements were simply beautiful! The cocktails are fabulous and very reasonably priced as are the vast selection of wines. Breakfast was amazing and very different, served in a sharing tray and containing so many delicious flavours. Would we go again? In a flash! Thank you to Liz, Paul and their fabulous waitress - we will return 💕

My wife and myself stayed overnight for a special celebration in the Denison room which was very well presented and very comfortable. We had pre drinks in the small intimate bar area, Liz was friendly, attentive and very informative with regard to the tasting menu nothing was too much trouble for her. The seven courses were presented like works of art and absolutely delicious. A truly exceptional evening. Breakfast was excellent, hearty and again presented in a rather unique manner. Liz and Paul are obviously very passionate about their food, accommodation and are to be congratulated. Would certainly recommend and will be returning.

My husband and I visited recently with another couple- they had been before so we came on their recommendation. It didn’t disappoint- we loved everything about it. Our room was immaculately clean, warm and welcoming, we were offered the chance to order drinks to be brought to us by Liz, who was an attentive host throughout. Good choice of pre-dinner drinks taken in front of the fire. The dinner cooked by Paul was superb and the accompanying wine flight had interesting wines which matched perfectly. There were only 10 covers so the service was attentive but never intrusive. We left after a delicious breakfast which was thoughtfully presented plotting our return.

The little place is an absolute gem! The welcome from the outset was warm and friendly. There are only a few tables, so it feels very exclusive and the customer service, very personal. The food is utterly delicious, and the wine-pairings are well thought out, and work perfectly with each course. The owners are both very knowledgeable, and extremely hardworking. Every detail is considered and appropriate. The bedroom was a cosy, an inviting space, with a stunning bathroom, and huge roll top bath. Drinks were brought to the room at our request. We will definitely return; as already missing the roast chicken butter!

We stayed for 1 night on Saturday for my birthday in the Waters room and had the tasting menu. Now I have to say all the food and drinks were amazing, one of the best tasting menus we have had, and the breakfast was lovely a little of everything like a small tasting platter. The owner Liz was very friendly. The room for us was very nicely done but a little small, dark and cramped and it was quite drafty but it is an old building.

About 15 years ago, we visited a little known hidden gem called The Black Swan at Oldstead, & I posted a review saying that it was every bit as good as much better known restaurants in the area. Quite a lot has happened to Tommy since then! Last night’s trip to The Hare evoked exactly the same emotions. As self-professed ‘foodies’, it’s incredible that Liz & Paul’s amazing tasting menu experience has eluded our ‘radar’ until now. I won’t add a long-winded review … just read any of the others, marvel at their consistency, & trust me that everything they say is bang on the mark. We loved the whole evening, couldn’t fault any of the dishes, & will definitely be back!

We saw a hare ( and then a barn owl ) before we checked in - a good omen. Everything was perfect from start to finish. The food was incredible - both in quality and presentation - the care and attention to detail from Paul and Liz was exceptional. Went to the Hare last night and had to review while the experience was fresh in my mind. In fairness, it will be a long time before I forget the food we ate. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel so welcome by Liz. We had lovely cocktails and were then shown to our table. The restaurant is tiny, only 5 tables for 2 so it feels very intimate. The meals are all served with approx 5 minutes between them so you are all eating the same things at the same time. The food was sublime! From the three small starters to the two puddings the food was exceptional. For me the tomato dish was the best, who knew that 3 cherry tomatoes in a tomato tea could pack such a punch. All you could hear was murmurs of appreciation from the room. My husband had the wine accompaniment and each wine was fully explained by Liz as to why she’d chosen it and decided how to serve it. My husbands favourite course was the lamb. The two puddings were amazing, the milk course with honey was incredible and the final course, a chocolate mousse with locally foraged hazelnuts was just incredible. A perfect end to a perfect meal. Each course was beautiful, each element was on the plate because it was needed to compliment the flavours, not just to look pretty. You can stay at the restaurant but need to book a long time in advance. If, as we were, you are staying locally make sure you book a taxi well in advance. They are few and far between. We were extremely fortunate that our hotel host transported us there and back which allowed us to relax and enjoy ourself. Why this place doesn’t have a Michelin star is beyond me - come on Michelin committee do the right thing and award a star to a small perfectly formed team. Highly recommend and will definitely be returning in the not too distant future.

We had an absolutely fantastic time at your restaurant and we both enjoyed the whole experience. We wanted to commend the exceptional service provided by Liz, not only friendly and welcoming but also displayed a great deal of knowledge and passion when describing each course. We must say that the food was absolutely outstanding. Each dish we tried was bursting with flavors and the presentation was wonderous which made the dining experience a feast for the eyes as well. The attention to detail in every aspect of the meal truly showcased the culinary expertise of the chef. Breakfast was just as beautifully presented, and quality just as exceptional. Plenty of variety including hot and cold choices. We stayed in one of the garden rooms named Leveret, it was cosy, comfortable and suited our needs perfectly. A nice touch in the bathroom was the roll top bath, walk in shower and under floor heating.

This was a really memorable experience, in a good way. Parking was easy just in front of the inn. It was built by the monks of Rievaulx abbey in the 12c to store their beer. It does look French. Elizabeth is a very attentive host and obviously proud of what they have created here. The tasting menu started at 7pm and was a lovely discovery of taste over several hours crafted by the Chef Paul. Every course was delicious and served at a nice pace. We did really like it and the restaurant is comfortable and not stuffy. We had wine at £30 per bottle and it was good. Our room was nice with a very comfortable bed. One tiny niggle, the bath lotion was on the wall at the end of the roll top bath so couldn't be reached. Breakfast was superb. We had a lovely walk near Rievaulx Abbey and a pint at the Star at Harome, all in the sunshine. Takes some beating.

Our evening and night at the Hare was absolutely wonderful. We stayed in Leveret and Waters rooms, which were beautifully renovated with large bathrooms and very comfortable beds. The rooms are a short walk from the restaurant, which is small but beautifully appointed with plenty of room at each table. Amber and Liz were delightful hosts, leaving Paul in the kitchen to work his magic. The tasting menu (8 courses) was fabulous. Starting with snacks through various fish and meat taste sensations and finishing with three sweet courses- all awesome! We decided against the wine pairing but enjoyed four excellent wines, which complemented the food perfectly. Congratulations to Paul and Liz for creating an unbelievable experience. Whenever I write a review, I take a range of factors into account relative to the cost, reputation, expectations and type of establishment. As such, ratings are accordingly subjective. After an aborted attempt to dine here for a birthday dinner a year ago, the owner Liz was exceptionally helpful in rearranging our experience. Thank you!Scawton is a hamlet atop the Hambleton Hills near Thirsk, and from the outside The Hare has the appearance of being the former village pub. The stonework of the exterior bathed in the evening sun gave a warm and welcoming introduction, but nothing compared to that awaiting inside.Liz is part of a tiny team running The Hare, which guarantees a level of service so personal that others could barely compete with. We were greeted like old friends and given a brief chat about the history and layout before being shown to our table. In these days of COVID-19, dining out is perhaps more of a gamble with one's safety than usual. I have to say The Hare's precautions allayed any trepidations immediately. I won't go into detail here, but please rest assured your safety and enjoyment are paramount.Opting for the taster menu is a fantastic way of placing yourself in the hands of the chef, allowing you to become acquainted with their talents and interests in a way like no other. Indeed, inclusion in the Michelin Guide is in large part dependent on the chef's culinary personality, so it would be remiss to refuse the opportunity for exploration. The following four hours took us on a wonderfully imaginative cultural journey. Each dish was served with care and a short verbal prolusion. We've been fortunate to dine in a number of Michelin star restaurants across Europe, where this descriptive ritual can be as intricate as the flavours and textures themselves. The Hare gives a less fussy narration, wholly in keeping with the gentle intimacy of the ambience. The accompanying wines each complimented their gastronomic fellow-travellers in a (literally!) intoxicating duet. Giving oneself over to someone else's oenological ideas is another act of trust, and one well worth the investment of confidence. The entire evening was an absolute delight. Dinner for two, plus wine recommendations and lavish additional drinks came to £360, placing The Hare firmly in the bracket of being a "Very Special Occasion" venue for us. It is, however, a restaurant we would definitely wish to revisit when means permit!

Really pleased that Liz and the team have re-opened and now have rooms available. Friends who accompanied us got the available room whilst we stayed locally. room looked superb and tastefully appointed. All COVID precautions were excellent, possibly a bit much, but better safe than sorry and didn't detract from the evening meal at all.The tasting menu with wine pairing was absolutely superb, local produce wherever possible, wines were excellent and Liz is really great at front of house and very informative on the food and wine. The Hare will hopefully continue to attract great awards and thrive in these challenging times.

We were lucky enough to be able to dine & stay at the Hare for the first night of operation as a "Restaurant with rooms". Having visited each year since Liz & Paul took ownership we were confident their Covid 19 procedures (as with everything they do!) would be well thought through, leaving us able to relax & enjoy our visit. Our expectations on that point were met & exceeded! As usual they have tried to think of everything & strike a balance to retain a fine dining experience whilst working within the restrictions they have to follow to keep both themselves & visitors safe. Our room for the night was light & airy with original features retained for character, king size bed very comfortable, stunning large bathroom equipped with feature bath, walk in shower, luxurious toiletries & soft fluffy towels to emerge to. The hard hats supplied for the limited headroom areas was an amusing touch to make us smile. Knowing the time & effort Liz & Paul have spent over the last few years sympathetically marrying the character & features of the building whilst updating with modern features we were not surprised by the quality of the workmanship & finish throughout. The dining experience, whilst obviously different due to C19 procedures, was still as always an amazing experience. From the start to finish of the tasting menu each dish looked, smelt & tasted amazing. Wine pairings as ever were a perfect match to each course. We thought our individual wooden cutlery boxes were a lovely thought and as usual Liz had even sequenced the required items for each course by layering it in the folded napkin! Having dined at Michelin starred restaurants the experience at the Hare is on a par with these because of the thought, love & effort that Liz & Paul put into everything. We have no hesitation in recommending the Hare to anyone who enjoys fine dining & hope that the business flourishes in these uncertain times.

Since the onset of the C-Virus, we've been counting down the days to The Hare reopening, and allowing us to dine with them again.Liz, Paul & the team deserve to succeed in their quest for excellence in all aspects of food, service and hospitality.OK, I may be a little biased, as we are visiting them for the 6th time - - - - but I urge everyone to support them when a special occasion calls.

We visited for my wife's birthday last week. When we originally booked the table , Liz was exceptionally helpful with suggested accommodation or options locally. It was a cold evening and we were welcomed to a seating area with wood burning stove which was ideal.Liz was a superb host, very attentive and accomplished at her sommelier, maitre d' roles. We went for the wine pairing which was excellent, very well explained and showed a good compliment to the dishes we ate.The food in itself was superb, all courses were fantastic. Well presented, cooked appropriately and flavours outstanding. The three plus hours we were there passed amazingly quickly, and there were no long delays, just perfect timing. Thanks again. Lovely evening. Will definitely return.

There are apparently three award-winning restaurants in North Yorkshire. This is well-deservedly one of them and in my experience certainly better than another. Each course packed with mouthwatering flavours. We left without feeling the need for more food. There was a good and interesting wine list with very competitive prices. The service was very friendly and attentive without being over-attentive. This small restaurant has lots of atmosphere, including log fires and low beams. If like me you are very tall, mind your head, but savour what will be a memorable and excellent evening out. Thanks Liz. We'll be returning soon...

What can I say but 'perfection'. From the moment you arrive and are greeted in the lounge area in front of a roaring fire by Liz it's like a journey through a culinary wonderland. Firstly drinks and amuse b'ouche which were delectable. Then you are escorted to your table which is not cramped as only 7 tables are available each evening to experience this foodies heaven. Depending on which tasting menu you have decided on you then spend the next 3 to 4 hours eating the most delicious food accompanied by descriptions and explanations from Liz as well as plenty of fun and friendly chatter (unless you want to be left alone to eat in which case your wishes are catered for as is everything else). I don;t really want to go into detail and ruin the surprise of the dishes and hope the photos do them justice, but, just to say the tastes and flavours and contrasts were stunning. If a michelin star isn't forthcoming I don't know why as I have eaten in many restaurants and this ranks alongside the best of them. One final mention is to try the pairing drinks - perfectly paired and sometimes surprising, but, never dull this was the best pairing combination my wife had ever had. All I can say is 'BRAVO'

Had a fantastic meal at this restaurant at the top of sutton bank on a cold and foggy evening. The interior by contrast was beutifully warm with bright stone walls and lovely furnishings. The meal was superb and the wine pairing excellent, The service provided by Liz, the chefs wife, was outstanding. We had a look around the 2 bedrooms which are in the process of being renovated, the bathrooms were finished and were very high end. Will look forward to them being ready for our next visit

This restaurant just keeps getting better. The owner operators have spent a lot of time and money on the interior and exterior and it has become a real class experience. The food is just superb and we continue to be amazed that this restaurant has not been awarded a Michelin star. In the same area we have the Star at Harome and The Black Swan at Oldstead and these are very good restaurants. The food at the Hare is even better.

Well what a find. Yorkshire has delivered again on the culinary front. We took our son there as the start to his wedding celebrations. The Hare Inn is a gastronomic delight. The food, service and ambiance are simply superb. We had the 10 course tasting menu and were taken on a journey of deliciousness of Michelin Star quality from the amuse bouche to the after dinner chocolates.Glorious tastes of duck, venison, mackerel, bass, blackberry, chocolate, milk and honey to a one scrumptious, beautifully presented and paired perfectly with wines clearly carefully researched.Front of house, Liz, was the owner of the Inn, husband is the chef.Liz was charming, knowledgeable and unobtrusive or as chatty as you wanted. With only seven tables in the restaurant you get a feeling of being a guest in someone’s home. The tables are nicely spread out, chairs very comfortable and the furnishings and decor homely and welcoming.Even though we live in London we will be making a return visit, The Hare Inn is simply a destination restaurant.

From the moment I made the booking I knew The Hare was going to be something special and we were not disappointed. We were greeted on arrival by Liz who was warm, friendly and welcoming. The ambience of the restaurant with its roaring fire was delightful. Liz explained the tasting menu and promptly brought us our pre dinner drinks. What became evident throughout the evening was the attention to detail on every level - everything from the homemade fruit ice cubes in my gin to the presentation of the table lay out, the serving of the food, the knowledge of food they were serving - was just perfect in every way. I could go on and on...… It truly blow us away that we have this standard of restaurant on our doorstep. The staff were exceptionally warm, friendly and clearly passionate about their food, explaining each course of the taster menu as it arrived. And onto the food itself... We have eaten in restaurants all over the world and we can honestly and truly say this is one of finest and most enjoyable meals we have ever had. The combination of flavours and presentation was second to none and everything was perfectly seasoned (which is quite rare to find these days!) You could see the work and passion that had gone into every single element of all the dishes. I appreciate that the £200 bill is not your regular night out, but was it worth it - you bet it was! 5 Stars - I would give it 10 stars and we will definately be going again - Thank you Liz, Paul and your team for a truly wonderful and enjoyable experience.

We have eaten in many Michelin restaurants over the years and the meal we had here on a quiet Thursday evening was certainly up there. From the "snacks" in front of a proper fire in the bar to the 3 fabulous desserts, each course was beautifully presented and balanced. Many times we had had a favourite dish that stood above the rest however I would be hard pressed to single out one course here as the whole evening was a delight. The actual dining room was quite beautiful, relaxing and a joy to sit in while eating superb food and enjoying good wine. Liz hosted the whole evening and was friendly helpful and knowledgeable, which added to our enjoymentWe look forward to the bedrooms being finished soon and will return.

We were so glad to have visited the hare for our anniversary this September. It was certainly well worth the drive up from Sheffield. A spacious dining room, with just 6 tables, allows the front of house team to make everyone feel welcome. There is a set tasting menu, with an optional wine flight. Each course was packed with wonderful colour, flavours and texture and you certainly will not leave hungry. We ate the lot and its up there with the best we have ever eaten.

A delight. Each course was imaginatively created and carefully constructed from local, even home-grown ingredients. The wine list was limited, a selection of well made, unpretentious wines and the Chablis we had complemented the food well. Service was attentive but unobtrusive. Thank you.

There are not enough superlatives to describe the tasting menu on offer. Each course was not only a work of art on the plate, but absolutely delicious. Liz, front of house, was knowledgable, not only of the food but wine as well and was attentive without being intrusive - a balance that is not easy to achieve. Looking forward to the guest accommodation being finished which will complete the experience. Highlights of the menu has to be the duck and hoisin and the chocolate salted caramel and hazelnut dessert although the honey bubbles were also stunning! Will be returning in future for other celebrations.

We had an outstanding 8-course taster menu. Everything was beautifully presented with surprises of oak smoke under a lid, foam bubbles of honey and tiny edible flowers/ leaves to decorate. An exquisite experience. We had a warm welcome from Liz who attended us throughout and made us feel very special. It was especially good for my wife to enjoy virtually same menu but Gluten Free without feeling she was missing out.

Be aware there is no mobile phone signal. The Cross Keys is a small village pub which provides accommodation, with the pleasantly decorated rooms in a separate building. Fresh milk was provided on arrival for a much needed cup of tea. Food is served in the pub every night which is good news for those walking the Yorkshire Wolds Way.After a good night’s sleep and breakfast, I collected my pack-up lunch and left Thixendale having been made welcome by Steve and Mary throughout my stay. It was great value too.

A canine cuddle cafe is the sort of place one would expect to find in the trendier parts of London which is why it was such a surprise to come across this little gem in Malton. That said, Malton has been awarded the title 'dog friendliest town in the UK.' We just love this cafe where several different breeds of happy dogs (which all belong to the cafe owner) are available for endless cuddles. The cuddles are accompanied by a variety of teas, coffees and home baking. Thalia, the owner, informed us that the venue and a selection of doggies can be hired for children's parties. Apparently an alcohol licence can be obtained for grown up parties. A visit to Malton would not be complete without a visit to Mixmups. We highly recommend. Thank you for a wonderful afternoon.

As part of that 'tasting menu' trend, if that's what you're after, you won't be disappointed. A lovely dining room, with semi-open kitchen and very attentive and knowledgeable staff. Crockery and artwork come from local creators, and adds to that 'local food producer' ethos. A destination eatery for grownups!
