The Hare at Roxwell in Chelmsford

I needed to find a suitable venue for my husband’s wake and I am so glad that I chose The Hare. They offer a very competitively priced buffet and allowed us to use a lovely part of the restaurant which overlooks the garden and has beautiful views of the Essex countryside. The staff were very attentive and the food delicious, the vegetarians were well catered for and everyone commented on how good the quality and variety of the food was. I cannot thank the management and the wonderful staff on duty enough as they made sure we could celebrate my husband’s life in the best possible way. They made a very difficult time that little bit easier and I cannot thank them enough.

We used to love visiting the Hare on a regular basis but every time we have been lately the staff get less and less! Never in my life have I seen such a busy restaurant / pub with just two members of staff working on a Friday night 🤯 shocked is an understatement! Clearly poorly managed. Credit to the two girls working tonight you didn’t stop! I felt awful asking for another round of drinks, management need to address this and address it fast as I along with the rest of my party tonight won’t be coming back until it is. Such a shame as the food and 2 staff members they had working were lovely.

Have been visiting this pub several times a year for a lot of years & loved the menu choices, the food quality, the small plates, the ambience, the staff & the location. Our most recent visit was a big disappointment. The menu has been changed considerably; there are no longer any delicious cakes & desserts in the cabinet, the menu choices are not very appealing & the experience was nowhere near as good as when it was a Pie & Pint establishment. Still found the staff very good & friendly but the pub has lost that special quality. Unfortunately we will not be back.

Arranged a meeting of F-Type owners at the Hare. We've met here a few times now and return as the staff are always welcoming and helpful. Food is top-notch and very reasonably priced. No hesitation in recommending the Hare whatsoever.

Visited this premise last Sunday with family. Before ordering I was reassured by our waiter that theroast beef was cooked medium and was a tender joint. Huge disappointment.. arrived very well done to the point of incineration , tough and dry. The roast potatoes were quite obviously from frozen, pretty tasteless and anemic. I did not make a fuss as I was with elderly local residents who often frequent the pub.

I haven’t been here in 2 years and it’s like a different pub. A gorgeous experience with great food and service. Mother’s Day is a tough day for pubs and this was great thanks to Maisey who kept us topped up with drinks and offered a friendly and warm service. Can’t recommend enough! Thanks

I have been a big supporter of the Hare for a number of years probably using it 4/5 times a year. We went in December and put the slow service down to the fact it was busy. Food was mediocre but it is pub food, saying that past experiences have been very tasty. Went this week and will not be rushing back. Service was unbearably slow. I suggest taking a snack with you whilst you wait. It was not busy whatsoever but took over a period of 2 hours to serve 2 starters and 3 mains. To add insult to injury I was given the wrong burger. Shame as it was our go to pub diner

Very simply fixed. Seems little energy to do so.... We love the furniture, and the views. It's the food that's letting it down. And the understaffing. Quite frankly the chefs version of "seasonal vegetables" felt like a message to tell us to leave. Simply awful. Limp, dead, overcooked. Wellington made with wrong pastry and tough beyond belief to cut through it. You've got such potential but if owners going to simply sit on a rather large bum and do nothing but drink... No one is going to make it boom. I think you don't care since you've got footfall. People want you to boom, your staff are amazing. Your food offering is average at best.

We love The Hare, or should I say we used to. Since the change of owners a few years ago we have sadly experienced the decline of this once fine ‘go to’ restaurant. The menu has shrunk drastically and now all you are offered is a standard, basic, microwaved ‘pub grub’ option. On our visit we were told there were no burgers available of any description. The cod and chips we ordered was cremated. The scampi and chips would’ve embarrassed the worst of a chippy at Skegness. They had run out of tartare source and the vinegar was limited on request. Such a sad state of affairs. It is no surprise there was only one other table occupied. We love the setting, hence our continued patronage, but unless the owners restore the experience back to where it was, we will regrettably not be returning. If they want to let the restaurant die then they are going about it the right way. NB. Credit to the waitress, who did her best.

Food tasted like Iceland Frozen food, very small dishes, no atmosphere, one of the waitresses decide to clean cutlery at the bar area, making a dreadful noise as throwing cutlery back into holders. Shame, this used to be a great place to go, but now awful.
