I was looking for somewhere local for my wife and I to visit and have a couple of drinks. By total luck, my research found this wonderful pub. It, along with the village it is in are the absolute quintessential country setting we dream of finding. There is an excellent selection of wines, beers and spirits to choose from. After making our choices, we could not ignore the great range of home cooked food on offer. We chose the cheeseboard to share and then a couple of deserts. The selection of cheese was not just out of the fridge and portions very generous. The wonderfully fresh and trimmed celery sticks along with ample bread and excellent biscuits made this a sumptuous feast which we both enjoyed. The apple and blueberry crumble along with the sticky toffee pudding were both a total delight. We will be back very soon to sample more of the great food on offer here. If you are looking for that chocolate box representation of a great English village pub with thatched roof and olde world interior, then pay the Half Moon a visit.

We were a party of four and our friends had booked a table for dinner. When they booked the member of staff had the courtesy and professionalism to advise that there would be a large party of diners and that it would be best if we could dine early evening rather than a 7.30pm slot. The table was booked for 6.45pm. On arrival we were greeted by friendly staff and shown to our table. The menu is on a large chalkboard in the bar. We opted for the stuffed chicken x 2, and 2 x suet puddings. Delicious, wonderful favours and well presented. We managed a sticky toffee pudding, chocolate brownie and a scoop of stem ginger ice cream. Again couldn't fault these. Coffees were not great though and we did mention this to the staff, but I've still given a 5 star rating because everything else was perfect at this very quaint, cosy, traditional pub. Hoping to return again soon.

The food was good especially the blackberry and apple crumble, although it was slightly expensive. I had the house red to go with my meal. Service was as good as it should be, however the table was badly positioned. We were a party of ten and not everybody could leave the table unless one or two people moved first. My conclusion this was an ok experience but there are several others I would choose first.

Cracking looking thatched pub, oak beamed, low ceilinged, nooks and crannies. Suggest you insist your booked table is not crammed next to the bar where loud 'gobshite' locals hold court. Could not hear ourselves think, let alone chat to each other. Asked to move table, advised none available. I apologised saying that their allocation for us was not appropriate and we would have to cancel our booking. We were then offered a table in the sparsely populated quiet restaurant area. Sunday roast was good, just a thoughtless poor start due to trying to squeeze in one more cover without a consideration to the ambience and dining experience for their customers.

The carpark is not over large but we found a spare with ease, once inside the bar was happily full yet we were greeted by the bar staff, we had booked a table, which was checked and we where shown ot the table. our drinks arrived quickly with out menus, we placed our food order, most tables were in use so we had expected a delay but the food arrived in good time, and it was nicely cooked, the chef rely knows how to cook a good Tee Bone. Good at the table service with a smile.

Recommended to us, we got lost coming from Sudbury as we missed the turning for 'The Belchamps' but once we got back on track found ourselves in a very lovely little village, where the pub was situated just across from the green. Didn't seem to be anything else here, no shops etc but a very nice place none the less. Very attractive pub and very traditional inside - lots of locals round the bar which was lovely to see as even after Covid lockdown this seems something unique these days. The food was very good, we both went for the Chicken stuffed with brie. The only reason we haven't given 5/5 is that the service wasn't great - when we arrived we stood around and eventually had to ask if it was OK to just sit anywhere, once seated we were served quite efficiently but it was a bit lackluster. Our drinks order was wrong and the food took 25 minutes, even thought there were only 2 other tables occupied in the place. In saying that - the food was worth the wait and all the serving staff were very young - so can be forgiven for the service not matching the food. We probably will go back and would not discourage anybody giving it a go.

Lovely English pub. Lovely location. Excellent simple pub food, done really well. Good beer, served well. Friendly staff. The rib-beef with the steak was so tender it almost melted. Everything homemade. This is an example of a traditional pub that should deserves to do well. Seems popular. Really liked this pub. I will become a semi-regular here.

We haven't been here since the first lockdown. But it definitely didn't disappoint – Sunday roast fantastic as usual and while I didn't have a dessert others went for the Crumble which is apparently delicious! The great thing about The Half Moon has always been the atmosphere – its offers a great place to eat with a genuine ‘locals’ feel – that was still there when we visited – locals sitting around the bar, who are always friendly and interested about you food etc (if you want to talk – they don't hassle you!). So glad we went back – made us feel life was actually getting back to normal! I have only one tiny alert here – my mum at 88 has mobility problems and the fact that the menu is all on wall blackboards meant we had to help her to walk to read them – in saying that we were quite close so it was only a little walk, so just make sure if a member of your group is not very steady on their feet or their eyesight isn't the greatest – book a table near the boards!

Visited the Half Moon recently with my husband on our wedding anniversary. Firstly I had to return a glass of wine but that was quickly sorted and then my starter arrived. Well, what should have been crispy whitebait um wasn't. It should have been called floppy whitebait. Not enough coating and bit disappointing. However our main course when it arrived was absolutely lovely. We both had Confit duck. Served just how duck should be. Slightly pink with gorgeous crispy skin. My husband then had a very nice crumble. So all in all a good evening.

20 plus visits over 3+ Years , Service ranges from Ok to awful , but food quality is excellent . But come on guys change the menu it has been the same for as far back as `i can remember , small wonder you have it perfected. Guess my main two gripes are the lack of a proper menu, no excuse for this , not right that guests have to walk over to blackboards to read the cast in stone menu , usually with other guests eating or drinking below the boards it is an uncomfortable situation for all concerned that could be avoided. we have pictures on our phone that we tend to share with our dining guests. Finally the ambience , this venue could be fantastic inside and better organised , decorated and furnished that it is, it has much more potential space is restricted and although no doubt a listed building an extension /conservatory or something similar would surely be a commercial success if the parking was properly organised. Frustrating that this venue is not fulfilling its potential. Oh and more care need to be taken over the employment of waitress staff, smiling is often overlooked.

For main course I had minted lamb pie, my husband had lasagne, friends had belly pork and the tagine respectively; all meals were piping hot and delicious. Three of us had different ice-creams for dessert and our friend had sticky toffee pudding with ice cream saying it was very light and not heavy as most are apt to be. Our friend had arranged for us to attend the pub for Sunday lunch as a treat. On arrival we were shown a table and we requested a high chair as we had our 17 month grandson with us. The high chair was slightly wobbly but we didnt take any notice. We arrived at 1.45 and no one came to take our order until at least 2.15. Our grandson got unsettled so we took him for a walk into the garden area. This area was not suitable for children there was no barrier between carpark and area and an open fence to the field behind. I returned as our food was ordered, when again we waited for some time eventually grandad was just taking our grandson into the garden when the food arrived. Once we had finished eating we waited and waited for someone to take our dessert order. In the end as the pub was virtually empty and no one was sitting at tables eating l alllowed my grandson to get down for the table and walk around. I hasten to add the only people in the pub at this point were sat at the bar talking to the owner. When it got to about 3.20 my partner went to ask about seeing a dessert menu, the owner brought the menu and just left it at the table and walked away. He eventually came back and we ordered dessert The owner then came over to us and said that we needed to sit our grandson down as there was food being moved about and he would be in the way. As l have said there was no one else at this point in there eating. The lady who works in there had quite happily been chatting to my grandson while he had walked around.

This is the 3rd year in a row that we've had a family lunch here on New Year's Eve. The Half Moon NEVER disappoints. Good selection of starters & mains - including for vegetarians - & very attentive staff. Reasonably priced, too. We never feel rushed, it's lovely to just chat over our yummy food! Highly recommend for a family gathering (we were table of 6) or couples. For formal meal or a lighter lunch.

We live locally in Pentlow. Moved in a year ago and found the Half Moon not long after we moved in. Eat there regularly. Food and service is just great. We had our wedding there in August, my birthday with a group consisting of family and friends in October and can only say that it is as good as it gets!

The Half Moon is a small unpretentious thatched property with several well spaced tables so conversation is easy. We were a family party of four adults. Couldn’t fault anything. The black pudding Scotch egg is superb, the steak & kidney pudding a delight, the fore rib of beef tasty and rare and the chocolate brownie supreme. All served promptly and efficiently. A little gem to which we will return.

Was looking for somewhere different to go to and came across this little gem! Table for four after some drinks at the bar. Nobody rushed us. Recommendations asked for and given. Not one complaint on any of the three courses or the wine. Superb all round. Will be going again soon even though we like to explore others!

Passing through the area on the way home after a day out and found The Half Moon on TripAdvisor. So glad that we made a slight detour to eat here. Arrived before evening service had begun so ordered drinks at the bar from the very friendly bar lady and chatted to 2 equally friendly locals for a while. This place is a proper old English country pub with loads of character and charm, the sort of place you wish every village still had. There is plenty of variety of meals on the extensive menu and not just the usual 'pub classics' that you see everywhere these days - something for everyone. The service was very prompt and friendly and the quality and presentation was excellent. It's a fair way out of our home area but we would make the extra effort to visit here again. Most enjoyable and we recommend it to others.

We live close to this establishment and visit regularly. The food is excellent and the pub is a proper old English pub. The last few times we have visited, the service has been appalling. There has been insufficient staff and the staff on duty seem to carry out numerous roles, rather than concentrating on serving at tables. We were there for over two hours for a two course meal recently and found the wait rather tiresome. The pub and the food are good but I fear that custom will be lost if the service remains poor.

Very olde world country pub with thatched roof and looking over the village green. Good sized car park at the rear. Delicious food enjoyed with friends today. A smile from the girl behind the bar at some point during our visit would have been appreciated.

My wife and I was staying locally so booked a table, what a great country old fashion pub low beams, thatched roof. Small bar but such a huge selection of cask beers and larger. We has an amazing table in the window overlooking the village green. Service was first class no rush or nothing too much, I had a lovely black pudding scotch egg no a combination I would normally go for but was so tasty. Main courses were first class again we did not feel rushed a good selection of puddings all very tasty. Coffee to finish. Summarising the whole experience would be pitched as outstanding food and service. We couldn't recommend this place enough, we will be going back soon worth the journey

My husband and I were looking for somewhere different to take some friends who were visiting us for Sunday lunch. We found this by accident searching on the web and booked a table for four. We were not disappointed, the welcome was warm, the wine chilled and the lunch superb. Highly recommend for a generous Sunday lunch at a very competitive price. Loved it and will return.

This is a quaint little country pub that I hadn't been to for years (at least 15!) and we took my parents there based on the reviews. Wow, I have paid twice what we did for a meal half as good and been happy to do so. I had the fish and chips, my god, better than I can ever remember, perfectly cooked, crispy chips, nice side salad and my parents had the steak (both) and it's the best steak they have had for a long time. The staff were very friendly and prompt, but they weren't interested in clearing us off so they could get another table in, we stayed, had some more drinks, nice coffee and a wonderful evening for it. Desserts were spot on, full of flavour, sweet and yet just the right amount. The decor is a little dated, but it keeps that country pub charm and frankly, if after the food you are bothered by the decor, you don't deserve to enjoy such a great pub! Well done, we will be back.

I went in to purchase a cheese & tomato toastie. I observed a staff member using the same tongs and same chopping board for a bacon roll and cheese toastie. Therefore I walked right out and won't be returning. This is really basic food hygiene knowledge. Hate to think what other hygiene rules they don't follow.

We met up with a lovely friend for lunch. We had tomato and basil for starter. I had a flat iron. Our friend had the burger, and my had prawn & salmon pasta. All arrived together, presented beautifully. Service was spot on. Definitely return. Reasonably priced.

On 28th August I went to The Railway pub in Witham with some friends, there 7 of us. We were looked after by the staff there. We all had lunch, the meals were excellent & reasonably priced too. We all thoroughly enjoyed our afternoon at this lovely old pub. We hope to return there again in the future!

Walked in... waited for around 4 mins. Someone was scrubbing something out back. Had a table of people sat in the corner vaping. So walked out.

I turned up in this shady little corner of hell desperate for some cheap food, after paying I realised the mess, the guy working must have killed a pigeon and stuck it on a pizza, I can only guess that's what he did because that's what the pizza tasted like. Would not recommend ruining your appetite here.
