The Haddock’s End in Cornwall, Isles of Scilly

I recently visited The Haddock’s End in Perranporth and had a great experience. The young lad serving was exceptionally polite, friendly, and made the visit even more enjoyable. He was welcoming, had a great attitude, and made sure everything was just right with my order. It’s always nice to see staff who genuinely care about good service. As for the food, it was excellent! The fish was crispy and fresh, the chips were just right, and the curry sauce was absolutely spot on—full of flavour! The shop's convenient location near the beach made it an ideal spot to enjoy a traditional seaside meal. I highly recommend The Haddock's End to anyone seeking quality fish and chips with excellent service.

Had the displeasure of ordering here twice now. The first time was a couple of weeks ago and I was served by the young blonde lad pretty late in the afternoon. He seemed absent of any emotions and a little stand offish. My girlfriend also picked up on the same sour energy. We thought he might of had a bad day and was disinterested and just wanted to get home. Unfortunately the curry sauce was decent so the missus suggested we go back again today hoping for better customer service... Again was served by the young lad with all the charisma of a breadstick. An unsalted unseasoned sesame free basic value breadstick... No please. No thankyou. No polite small talk. Not even a smile. Asked for my food in a carrier bag and even that seemed like too much trouble as he handed me the bag to fill myself with half my food still on the opposite side of the counter. He just seems completely rude and miserable and it ruins your day. I work hard all week to enjoy a weekend treat and spend my hard earned cash in establishments like this and I shouldn't be leaving feeling dismissed. He needs a new career or a training course in customer service. I get it I was a young lad once working in food retail at McDonald's and I didn't particularly want to be there but I always engaged with customers in a friendly manner and just tried to make the most of it. This guy has a job in a stunning location in a great part of the world he should be grateful to be so privileged. I won't be making the mistake of coming a 3rd time I'd rather put money in the pockets of businesses that don't make me feel like a burden. Customer service and atmosphere is terrible and the food is mid at best.

Having moved to the area six months ago, I’ve been disappointed by the quality of most fish and chip shops in Perranporth perhaps a winter issue? However, this takeaway was a very pleasant surprise! The fish was perfectly cooked, with crisp batter and flaky fish, and the chips were spot on. The curry sauce was absolutely delicious. While the staff seemed a little grumpy at first—possibly due to being understaffed during a busy period—the quality of the food more than made up for it. Easily one of the best fish and chip spots I’ve found here, and I’ll definitely be back!

Awful, worst chips I have ever tasted. The oil obviously not been changed in days. The staff were so rude. I am local but will never eat there again and will be spreading the word just how awful the food and service was

One of the worst fish and chip takeaways I've ever had - only had cod available from the fish options on the menu and the chips were soggy and oily. Won't be going back in a hurry.

Very over priced ! fish and chips for 2 with one very small gherkin was £24.fish was a good size but had a bad aftertaste, like the oil it was cooked in needs changing. Chips had same aftertaste.

Takeaway regular fish and chips for 2 today with curry sauce and mushy peas. The best fish and chips we’ve had in a longtime, cooked fresh from order. Excellent quality, big portion size, value for money and really friendly and pleasant server. You deserve the business, spot on, thank you 🙏🏻

Update 12/07/2024: I have visited this chippy twice since my glowing review and on both occasions I have been told that they are only serving cod. Accepted this on first occasion and it was fine but on the second decided to try elsewhere. If you are advertising a product then please sell it. Review 09/05/2024 The beautiful Cornish resort of Perranporth is not short of fish and chips shops but my wife and I chose Haddock's End, near the beach, for our lunchtime treat whilst on a day out in early March. We were not disappointed. My wife had haddock and chips whilst I had the plaice and chips. In both cases the fish and the chips were cooked to perfection with lovely batter. The fish was lovely and the portions were very generous. A modern, clean chippy with great customer service too. I'm sorry to all the competition but we will not be trying anywhere else on our future trips to Perranporth. Fantastic!! Thank you.

Best fish and chips I have had in a long time, portions were generous and fish was superb, excellent batter. You sometimes feel ripped off in holiday resorts, not here, next time I'm in Perranporth I will be coming here. PS not sure why the other chippies were closed, the place was packed with tourists..

Attended here today to grab some chips for dinner. The portion sizes were shocking. I asked if they done a large bag of chips (as it was for 4 of us) and was met with “no just the one size” but then seen the price of a cone advertised on the opposite wall. The “one size” is charged at £3.50 and the portion just about covers the size of the bottom of the tray. The gravy was very bland and watery and the chips tasted like they’d been cooked in week old oil. The customer service was also bad. The two young girls on the tills weren’t welcoming or polite. The young girl with red in her hair was particularly miserable and rude. Won’t be using again

Tried the haddocks end for the first time visiting Perranporth on a busy sunny Sunday but for some odd reason no other fish and chippy was open so it was super busy. Took a while to queue up but once ordered they didn't take too long to get the food out. Advantage of the busyness is how fresh the normal portion of fish and chips is. The fish tasted fresh and batter was crispy, the chips portion was on the smaller side but good enough. The curry sauce was very different from any other place, was very Indian inspired, made a pleasant change but was hotter than the others. Very nice I did enjoy it and prices is comparable to other places.

Best Fish and chips in Perranporth. Great portion sizes and tastes amazing. Location is perfect as it’s right near the beach and lots of benches to eat on.

Food is not bad but the service is so abrupt and grumpy I’ll be taking my business elsewhere next time. Asked for multiple things and was just met with a “NO”. Ridiculous.

Fair dos matt and staff , I fancied chinese mate said let's have fish and chips .. Reluctantly I said OK. Absolutely banging mate best I've had in a long time .. special mention for the curry sauce

Caught the queue here on a busy evening.. I'm sure they were meant to close shortly but the queue just kept growing..! I imagine thats testament to how good the food is. Priced fairly for the seaside. Waited a while, but that cannot be helped with the sheer volume of hungry mouths wanting feed. Had no stock of some favourites, likewise as above.

AWFUL CUSTOMER SERVICE! Ordered 5 take away meals and included in that order I specified "battered sausage and chips twice" which was verified by everyone around me. The person who served me was rude and displayed a couldn't care less attitude and clearly doesn't listen because I was served up 2 battered sausages in a tray with no chips. She proceeded to tell me that I was in the wrong and that's what I'd ordered despite everyone in the shop disagreeing! She then said oh well it doesn't matter we'll just sort it. That's right, It doesn't matter but own your mistakes and remember to treat your customers with respect! I was then charged for the 2 portions of chips that she'd forgotten to charge me for. Now, I'd had the chips in the end so I wasn't bothered but good customer service here would be to say that because of the error I won't charge you for the extra chips. Rude, poor customer service and the food was nothing special either.

I'm was really happy with the fish and chips, but the service let's the place down. No manners or welcoming ,manners dont cost a thing and if you can't smile or say thank you then you need to change your job, this made me annoyed when I left so I will not be returning.

Sorry didn't take a picture but I had cod and chips and it was the best I've ever had in my life and I'm 67, we moan about the price of food but tbh the size of the fish to the freshness and the fish went right to the ends of the batter unlike the expensive small portions for the same price, excellent, excellent, don't change what you do ill be back for more

A great spot for a quick lunch and right by the beach. The cod bites were crispy and flavorful, the chips were excellent, and the curry sauce was delicious! Possibly the best chippy in Perranporth!

Usually go Pickwicks but it was shut so thought we’d try these. Chips were dry and tasteless and the curry sauce was that salty we couldn’t eat it. Disappointed to say the least.

Absolutel shambles. DONT GO HERE. Wasted my money . Not a fish and chip shop. Can’t even cook chips. How easy does it get. Battered sausage tasted like fish. Just how hard is it. Serious people I review a lot of places this is definitely one of the worst.

we are regular customers here and have always raved about your fish and chips the size of the fish is great the taste beautiful definitely best in Cornwall unfortunately I'm not sure if it's because it's tourist season but we've had our usual 2 fish and 1 chips to share this evening and we're extremely disappointed! Much smaller fish for the same price and chips just covered the bottom of the tray and still the same price To say we were disappointed is an understatement having travelled over from St Austell Hopefully this was a one off!

Disgusting food with small portions. Perranporth is the worst place to get fish and chips

I had a child's porton of 3 cod bites and chips £5.65 and curry sauce at £2 the size was ok for a small child and the cod bites were crisp and tasty but very very greasy. The chips alone were easily a 8.5/9 out of 10 but the portion size was for a 3/5 Yr old at best and then it was an extra £2 for the curry sauce, the cod bites were adequate but they unfortunately didn't equate to the extra cost for curry sauce. Rather disappointing to be honest 😕.

Visited Cornwall a couple of weeks ago with my family and stopped off here for some lunch, the chips was rock hard and the young girl that served me had no manners what so ever. I asked for salt and she was rolling her eyes at me. A lady in front of me who was queuing even mentioned her attitude. Very rude and I won't be returning.

Used to be ok in here but not this time. I live in Perranporth just 3 mins away. Chips was cold Chips Very hard like eating rocks had to feed the seagulls with chips Total waste of money which seems to be going up and even smaller portions.. Shame really...

Very poor quality chips cold and hard inedible very skimpy portions price is very overpriced it would be cheaper and better value to go into Truro at least you could eat them I offered them to the seagull's but even they refused to eat them and that'll tell you what they think My advice is avoid and don't waste your time and money.

Such tasty, piping hot cod and chips and a huge portion at a good price. Will definitely go to haddock's end again.

Wouldn't ever come here again! Came at 6:30 got told they wouldn't cook me a burger even though they shut at 8. Not very disappointed as I regularly recommend people to you won't bother next time. The lad who served me didn't have much customer service either to be honest very blunt not very chatty. Very unhappy customer

We were looking for fish and chips in Perrenporth and this place had the best reviews but it couldn’t have been more disappointing - charged for 3 lots of chips but only got two, asked for no salt on chips but ended up with salt. Some chips crunchy and not cooked through, some soggy and greasy, and the pies were burnt on the top, the bottom AND in the middle. A complete waste of £20 and won’t be buying from here again.

Decent fish and chips but been coming for best part of a decade and they never have the large cod.

Lovely food and quick service. The fish and chips were really nice and the cod bites option for kids was great and only £5. Shame about the lack of manners from the kids working in there, on two separate occasions. My five year old has better manners. Looked at me as if I was the rude one when I mentioned it.

This place would not let me put my own salt and vinegar on my fish and chips 14/7/23 because of covid!… and yet none of the staff were wearing masks or gloves and were quite happy to handle my food and container, must be the last business in England to have covid restrictions, food was ok though!

Food and price is all great near enough tried everything my fav is haddock and chips with curry sauce yum would get 5 stars just would be better if delivery was an option I'm in truro and they don't have the best chip shops that deliver

This is by far the best fish and chips in Perranporth. We had to use pickwicks as it was bankholiday. It just made us realise how nice this place is, as the pickwicks fish and chips were some of the worst we had ever had.

Didn't seem overly happy to be serving last night. Ordered fish and chips, fish was so greasy it soaked through the layers of paper onto my jeans, chips and curry sauce were okay.

The food is nice enough and the price is good but the guy who takes the orders is a right miserable #@$%! Puts me off going there more

Quality fish and chips cooked to order nice flaky cod excellent chips not greasy by any means and of course being typically British eaten alfresco style on the beach front while blowing a gale.

The cod was excellent would like to try the haddock.

They certainly don't know how to cook fish here, the batter was that thick it was still soggy inside, couldn't even taste the salt and vinegar, the chips were great, curry sauce tasted scented overall the fish didn't warrant a price of £9-99. We've had better from here in the past but seems to have gone down in stars for us.

Pleasantly surprised by the size of the cod fillet, although fish and chip prices are going up all the time, and the prices here are not cheap, I did feel I was getting value for money

We went in while on holiday, my little boys choice for his birthday tea. The young lady that served us heard us talking about his birthday and got all the customers and staff to sing happy birthday to him. It made his day. He later dropped off some chocolate for her to reflect her kindness. Food was fabulous too!

A really lovely fish and chip shop, that has amazing portion sizes and huge cod. It’s a completely consistent, you never have to worry that you might get greasy chips or sub standard fish. They get busy though, so do expect a short queue. It’s worth the wait! There isn’t much more you can say!

Excellent fish and chips … best we have had in many years coming to Cornwall. Don’t waste you money on Rick Steins this place is head and shoulders better. Only criticism, son isn’t a fish lover so had a burger which was very disappointing. Had a mix up with orders and had to go back to be met with not the best reception from the staff when I stated that the burger looked pitiful to be told to go somewhere else as I was being rude. No I wasn’t I was stating fact. They quickly replaced my order and I’m all fairness totally redeemed themselves on customer service level when after I left the shop the lady came to chase me to give me that had been forgotten from the bag. Even after shaky ordering … fish and chips are the best and will definitely highly recommend and see you next year !!!

Some of the best fish and chips you can get!

First of all, the queue was huge. Now that said two things to me. First, it's worth the wait for a decent fish n chips. Second, the fish is going to be freshly cooked. I was right. Very very nice fish and chips, couldn't fault it. Definitely recommended!
