The Galley Cafe in Newry and Mourne

Food was alright, wouldn't be worth the hype. Prices very good. Staff among the most ignorant and abrupt I've ever came across, serious lack of training there. Wouldn't be good working with tourists

Had dinner here this evening. I had baked cod and then lemon meringue pie and ice cream for dessert George had chicken and bacon with cheese and apple and black berry crumble. Lovely meal.

Very nice food however thought a little pricey also unfortunately we were not offered kids menu apparently you are required to ask for it . Plus note yes food was delicious & staff so lovely

I had the chicken strip meal in here and ive to say the food was absolutely brillant my better half had loaded fries and they where awesome to would definitely try again

More than impressed with The Galley. There’s a reason why the chippy is always so busy, the food is exquisite. We sat in for the first time, with a cost of £70 for 4&1 toddler, full belly’s all round and everyone extremely happy. It’s much bigger inside than it looks outside. Photos pictures were the pulled pork burger & the stacked sandwich!

This review is for the takeaway part of the restaurant. We had visited years ago and remembered it being above average but this time, we were underwhelmed. The chips were dry and undercooked. Not what it used to be. Also, I've included photos of the current menu as the ones they have posted on Facebook are a couple years out of date.

Food is amazing… is what I would say if I ever got to eat it. Twice I’ve gone to use my voucher, for the takeaway to be closed early. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice.., you know the rest :(

We went to The Galley chip shop this evening. We ordered a 6oz double decker cheeseburger with onions and red sauce a sausage bap with onions and red sauce and a 4oz double decker burger with red sauce. We placed our order at 17:17, at 18:00 we still had no food so I went to the till and asked what was going on and I was told there were a lot of app orders and our food wouldn't be too much longer. In the meantime there were several people who ordered after us and got their orders within 10 minutes of ordering!! We finally got our food at 18:10 nearly an hour after ordering!! When we finally did get our food our burgers were cold and like rubber and were completely drowned in red sauce

I live 56 miles from it and still drive to get a fish.. hands down the best iv ever had

Stopped on Sunday and ordered a Scampi and lg chip and a large Cod supper and what I got wasn't brilliant at all. The Fresh Cod was nice but surrounded by a tasteless and unseasoned batter, which was a bit of a disappointment having heard so many rave reviews on this offering and seeing so many awards in the takeaway on display. The Scampi looked like it was the remaining batter remnants that float in the fryers in most chippies. And if it had of been tasty I wouldn't have passed much remarks but I wouldn't be rushing back to be honest. One positive is that the chip portion sizes were huge.

Managed to pop in at a good time and get a table straight away. Service staff were really friendly and the food was delicious. Wish I had of kept room for dessert cos they looked great! Would go back again.

Tables for a start were not overly clean, there was a strange smell in the place. But heard good reports so stayed to try the food... The young girl who showed us to the table looked like she would rather be elsewhere! Food... Well I got lasagne and chips. Chips were good no complaints, but the lasagne was oily and laces with what I could only describe as cheap cheddar cheese that looked like it had been microwaved! It was mostly cheese, giving it an oily overpowering taste! Lasagne should not taste like this... Was hardly any meat either. Salad would have been nice apart from the dressing.. This should be stated! As not everyone likes dressing. The garlic bread again was oily like someone just covered it with garlic butter and hoped for the best! My partners burger was good according to him and he enjoyed his chips but I thought the garlic chips looked far from appetising. Not everyone can eat greasy, oily food..deffo not worth the money. Highly overpriced for what they serve.

We were out for a drive and decided to stop at the Galley, we should have kept driving. We got a fish supper, sausage supper and a tub of curry sauce. The chips weren't great but improved when dipped in the curry. The biggest let down was the fish, it had soggy thick batter, I ate a few bites then gave up as it was so greasy. Won't be back.

Called yesterday for late lunch and as usual we were not disappointed. The service and cleanliness of the restaurant was first class. Food was also beautiful and can’t wait to call again.

V busy… lovely atmosphere…extensive menu… delicious food. Couldn’t complain about anything. Will certainly be back and recommend to friends.

I have been going here for years and always recommend the food but today has put me off ask for chicken burger with no mayo went to eat it covered in mayo chips half raw an black very disappointed sorry but getting a bad meal when I come from dromore to get food

Went here for a takeaway and was very disappointed. We ordered 2 haddock suppers and asked for one to be Gluten free. When we got back to our holiday home and opened the food it wasn’t even marked which one was gluten free which meant I couldn’t eat the fish without taking the batter off so it was just plain fish with no flavour. It wouldn’t have been hard to mark gf on the right one. Extremely careless. There was no salt and vinegar on the chips so they were also bland and also quite dry. The portions are huge so if it was edible you would definitely get moneys worth although one portion of chips is more than enough for 2 people but unfortunately it was mostly wasted as it just wasn’t good.

We went here for my sons birthday meal, the 7 of us enjoyed our meal the honey chilli beef and rice was lovely as was the fish and chips. The only thing I thought service was slow and after bringing our food to us, no member of staff came over to ask was everything ok or did we want anything else. Food is lovely but expensive.

Although I have enjoyed my previous visits to the carryout I was quite disappointed in my visit today, after a lovely day up the mourns we decided to have fish and chips at the galley afterwards, I felt a bit disappointed in the small portion and the price of 14.95 for a fish supper which we eat outside at the picnic tables, definitely over priced !!

Just out of the gallery unbelievable so good had the prawns and sour bread . To die for will be back again soon .

Heard so much about this place as have recently moved to the area from new work colleagues, did not disappoint and will surely be back many times as I settle in the Kilkeel area 😉

We had a take out and the fish & chips, brilliant. Haddock was white and tasty also batter was cooked to perfection. We had breaded scampi as well which was good. You must try the curry sauce on your chips they go together like preorder peas in a pod. I have eaten in the galley always lunch time which is great, you may have to wait for a table but well worth it. Try a wee treat scone raspberry and white chocolate you will want to go back for more. Girls are always friendly and serve with a smile.

Consistent and well priced. Always pop past for a quick bite, either sit in or takeaway. One of the best in Co.Down in my opinion. Crab meat and fish both top drawer. Chips always fresh and tasty. Blows almost every chip shop in Bangor out of the water. Highly recommended if in the area

We had booked in a party of 53 members of an over 55s club in for lunch today . Meal was terrific,staff very attentive and efficient .we will definitely use it again and would highly recommend to anyone. Thanks to Mark and the staff for all their help

This was our 1st time ordering a takeaway, large q but good service.

We came here last week! Toilets were dirty and messy though. Regardless, the fish and chips were affordable

Haven’t been to The Galley in a long while, it’s worth a trip! Service was fast and friendly and food tasted really good! The only thing was I was slightly disappointed at was the portion size of the fish and chips for being around £15. However it tasted good and the garlic chips were amazing.

Stopped here for my lunch while out travelling for work. Ordered a Cod and Chip, both well cooked and very tasty.

Called in as we hadn't been for quite a while. Really sorry we did. Got breaded fish and chips each TERRIBLE. Fish coating was thick and hard as the road. The chips were covered in black bits. Obviously the potatoes hadn't been checked for quality. But who in their right mind chips potatoes and sees black bits on every piece and thinks that's OK. It was awful left most of it and it cost £33.40. This place used to be nice but it's gone way down hill. Definitely will not be back.

Top notch fish and chips, served by friendly staff, choice of fish and lots of other choices. Great range of cakes and bakery products. They use proper chips you won't get frozen foods here. Watch out for the specials board. A very clean and tidy well laid out establishment which was very busy when I visited. They also do carry out.

We can see why The Galley is rated so highly, there was a huge queue for the restaurant when we left. My food was OK but I’m not a fan of batter, personally I think it covers up good fish so I take it off but there wasn’t much haddock inside but the chips were very tasty and so were the peas. My husband’s burger looked good, he said it was delicious and he finished all of his chips. The service was friendly and very efficient.

Real recommend homemade pastie and chips so good also freshly prepared fish .

Fantastic place to eat, we were visiting relatives in Annalong so they regularly eat here. I have food allergies and the gluten-free options on the menu were fantastic. I had gluten free cod and chips which was delicious. Prices very reasonable. Staff were very friendly and welcoming. I highly recommend a visit, I would definitely return.

My son proclaimed this ‘The best breakfast he’d ever had in his whole life!’. Praise indeed…

A very popular and friendly place. Great selection of food We had morning coffee and delicious raspberry scones with cream. Lunch menu looked great. Highly recommended. Be prepared to queue at busy times but worth the wait.

We stayed across the road in the caravan park for a four night stay to get away for our wedding anniversary and my birthday, which were one day after the other. We chose the Galley for our anniversary dinner on the Wednesday night and it was a no brainer to come back the next night for my milestone birthday dinner. The food, atmosphere and the welcome both nights could not have been beaten and the value for money of the two courses for £14 will take a lot of beating anywhere. Would highly recommend and would definitely return there if ever back around Annalong.

Absolutely terrible. Has really went down hill, used to love going here on our first night to the caravan and then again the following morning for breakfast. However this Friday was a disaster. I ordered the steak sandwich. The steak was like leather, and the panini it came in was completely drenched in oil, ended up being sick after it. And at £8.50 it wasn't cheap. Wife ended up sick all the next day too and the kids barely touched theirs. The chips were cold and soggy. Be warned this place is living off old reviews and reputation, must be under new management/owners.

Called in here for dinner after a day in the Mournes. Restaurant is very well spaced for social distancing and staff are well prepared. Food was amazing - highly recommend cod and chips.

The girl serving us was efficient and friendly helping my wife and I choose our meals. My wife selected fish cake, chips, peas and a side salad. Pastry was very crispy. Really enjoyed all. Finished by sharing hot toffee pudding with ice cream. Delicious 😋

Visited restaurant on Monday afternoon not busy but service very slow. We all ordered signature meal cod and chips. Fish was average with excessive batter. Chips were not palatable. Disappointed as we drove 40 miles for poor food.

Absolutely terrible the chips were mostly end bits. The fish batter was soggy. I would never go again. Years ago it was very good, but terrible now.

Just had about the best christmas dinner i ever had in a restaurant cafe or hotel. Had it at the Galley today. Absolutely delicicious real turkey and ham with all the trimmings. Perfectly cooked and served by pleasant staff who ensured i had every thing...

Now we just stopped for a coffee as we had the dogs with us but the outdoor seating and layout was very good, friendly and helpful staff and good prices.

Classic seaside restaurant and chippy. Sit dow for brisk service and generous portions. Tea in a proper pot and gallons of it.

5 stars for the young staff members, we had group of 15 & were expected to pay per table, found this quite strange as we all ordered separately & wanted to pay same way, but lass on till was very grumpy over paying separately.

Absolutely fantastic family meal. Special mention to the friendly and hard working staff too. Recommend you visit as you won't be disappointed. We will be back soon 😊

Enjoyed our experience in the galley......nice friendly staff... i.had mash potato...chicken wrapped with bacon and bbq sauce with side salad and coleslaw......so delicious!my husband had baked cod ...champ and mushy peas...oh and of course tartare sauce on the side!!really lovely he said!!finished up with pavlova...

I enjoyed an absolutely lovely dinner here with my parents. The salt and chilli cod special was delicious. Staff were warm and attentive as always with great service - a special mention to Lorraine for looking after us so well. It’s easy to see why...

Takeaway ordering and service very slow and not a busy night. Quality of food very poor, chips cold greasy and burger over cooked.

Excellent service, menu and food! Very friendly staff who aim to please. We did have to wait awhile for a table but it was worth it!
