Quality has dipped slightly over last year so has portion size. Staff friendly and polite.

This business will only employ very young inexperienced staff so as to save money. These staff have no customer service skills, have visited many time & the staff profile never changes inexperienced incompetent poorly trained 17yr olds looking top dollar for a simple meal . Stood at the counter & waited to be served the single young staff member clocked me straight away , as I waited for around 5 minutes with no acknowledgement from said staff member who was flat out making one burger, another customer arrived who had not ordered & who was served immediately. I took my custom elsewhere as they obviously don't require it , they are gonna know all about it when the new Foodhouse gets going next door as the service there is ace

Had to wait 10-15 mins for a small chip. Seems the staff member did not put the chips on the fryer until 5 minutes after I ordered even though there were no other customers present. Chips were very basically done, not crispy.

I ordered a sausage supper. The sausages were put on to cook along with fresh chips but I got nice sausies with " kept warm" claggy chips. Quite disappointed since I drove 40 miles for that sausage supper

Ordered a full fry and a wrap . Chips were served like they were straight from the fridge. Not even warm No beans with the fry. Normally like here for takeaway but seriously gone down in my ratings unfortunately!

A staple of newry and almost a week to week favourite. Food is almost always really good but lately has been mediocre but has been corrected when I spoke to a staff member, fish prices have been dear at the moment but reflects. Younger Staff sometimes can be juvenile without overseen by the manager as it took over 30min once until I enquired twice.

Ordered fish supper and a fish, when it came to wrap up the fish I couldn't believe what they were presenting was being sold as a portion of fish. Not much bigger than a fish goujon. I asked, are you seriously trying to passs that off as a portion of fish? I was told "yeah" that was it. I told them they were taking the piss. Had I not already paid, I'd have left without the food. Also my wife had rung ahead to order the food. She was told it would be ready in 10 minutes, when I arrived mire than 10 mins later, only then did they start to prepare the food. I 'm conscious that for many in these austere times, a weekend fish n chip can be a real treat. I'd give this a wide berth if you're in that category. You may be well be very disappointed and under served. Not good enough.

The weather might not be the right one to get an ice cream but if you decided to go you will be not disappointed. We did not try much from the place just ice creams, milkshake and coffee, but what we have tried was delicious. Very friendly staff, smiling and chatting. Very nice place 👌

Chips lovely, sausage good, gravy , was definitely something wrong there, I had to scrape it off the chips.

Nice road stop cafe with simple but effective menu. Worth stopping in if your on your way in or out of Newry but not worth traveling out of your way to. Will stop in again though!

Was in your cafe in newry ,it was my son and myself 1st visit since lockdown ended. A special mention to Tara, Lisa and Denise There was a few hiccups, but these girls rectified everything. I will be be back .I cant recommend this place enough, because its the staff that makes this place.,ice-cream simply the best

Tried the fish supper here recently, thought it was a little expensive at 8 pounds, I find the quality is better at Jimmy's takeaway in Banbridge, also is cheaper.

Fish is very greasy. Tastes good but the paper it is wrapped in is saturated in grease. The chips taste good. It is definitely not worth £9.00. I would give it 5 out of 10. I won't be rushing back. It is a really slow service too.

This is a cafe from Warrenpoint, which I have known from a child and in my opinion has some of the best icecream I've ever had and the chip shop is equally as good. Full mark's from me and always will be.

I regularly get fish suppers from here. It's lovely and fresh. The place is always clean. They also have a lovely little ice cream bar that is very nice. Service is great. The only drawback is parking in the area is not great, but that's not the fault of Genoa's.

Been meaning to try here if ever in the area. I was rushing so I ordered a single battered cod. As I was waiting I noticed how well the Genoa was decorated and very clean. The fish took the customary 8 minutes to fry. I asked for ketchup on it but they only give free sachets. Strange! The fish was a good size but very thin. Probably the batter was a bit hard and I would say not a lot of taste. The few chips free with it were ok. I eat all in the car and it was fine. I would call again and recommend it to the public.

Back home after 30 years .Took pot luck here and there for my weekly dose of chips with generally poor experience till I hit on Genoa on Belfast road.First lot excellent freshly cooked so I took the trouble to come back next week ---same --- so I have ceased to wander .Best chips in UK ---official---I have tried all over.

In a small strip mall with it's own parking, but it can get very busy and crowded. The venue only has a dozen tables or so. Service is very prompt and the food is delivered quickly and prepared nicely.

I took my family to the Genoa, Newry on Friday evening for dinner and ice cream. Service was good and pleasant. When I went to pay my bill, I brought to there attention I had found a deep fried finger nail in my food. I returned to the table to wait for my children to finish their ice cream. We were there for 10-15 minutes with our dinner plates and finger nail in front of us. Not one member of staff came over to address my issue or inspect my plate. When we left the building and returned to our car, it was only then we could see staff members going to our table.

Blond girl working today threw the menus as we sat down, didn’t even say hello on welcoming us, and didn’t say a word throughout serving us, completely ridiculous customer service, I would be treated better in a prison. I don’t normally like to complain but seriously took ages!!! Use tripadvisor more to look for places but have to say longest I’ve waited for takeaway stood for about an hour for a fish and chip and a double beacon cheeseburger, not happy

Right, I’m getting sick of this place. I complained a few months ago when I sat in with my family and it was a terrible, horrible experience. This time I went for a carry-out and, even though the food was ok, the staff were extremely rude and unprofessional. The girl who took our order was very impolite and stuck up, taking no interest in the customer’s welfare. The second girl who asked if we wanted salt and vinegar started shouting at me, as if I was deaf. And also, we were the only ones getting a carry-out, so what’s the point in shouting? Absolutely ridiculous. Another girl who was very dosey asked, “Are you gettin?” Sure it’s not like you’ve been standing there for the entire time I’ve been in here, how would you not see that I have ordered. To conclude it was a sickening experience and staff or owners are probably too self-indulged to read this or take any advice from it, but just make sure you know that your reputation is sinking and it’s your own fault. So fix up or shut down.

A family run restaurant with seriously good food, great recipes of cod n chips, homemade gougons (fish or chicken) selection of sauces and their signature mixed chips! Staff are uber efficient and extremely friendly and more than happy to give you a steer on house specials. Provision to take food to go or sit in, although there is only a few seating booths. It also has a super Icecream bar! Definitely highly recommend

Very disappointing visit! Ordered 3 different items from the menu to be told they were all either sold out or infact were not served in the newry shop even though it was on the menu! False advertisement!! Also did not appreciate staff staring at us & obviously talking about us after I had challenged them about said false advertisement!! Got up and walked out without food, will not be back & would not recommend to anyone else.

3rd visit here, sitdown each time and by far the best fish and chip shop in Newry.had gammom,egg and chips yesterday...only 6.99. My partner had steak,egg and chips....12.99 the staff were pleasant,everywhere spotless....maybe a bit slow but to be expected when ordering a steak.can't understand the bad reviews.

The attitudes of staff in Genoa are terrible. I called in on St Patrick's Day for 4 chips. They clearly forgot about my order as people who had come in after me had been served - people who ordered burgers and fish. Twenty minutes later there was no one else queuing and they didn't even know what my order was. I asked for my money back - the supervisor told me I was being awkward! She blamed the delay on me as I ordered so many chips. Four chips? from a chip shop! and that's too much? I'll never be back. Own up to your mistakes!

I have been a regular of the Genoa Cafe for a number of years now, and I have to say that the quality of staff and food is declining, badly. My family and I sat in a couple of weeks ago and I have to say it was an abysmal experience.

Just got a portion of chips for my daughter in the carry out,waited 20 minutes,took them home,most of the chips were frazzled,if I had been closer,I would have brought it back for a refund,never again,should have driven to Banbridge,the Florentine would show this place how to cook.

Food is cold and heated in a microwave! Chips are rock hard. Disgusting how they hand it to customers and don't care

Cuando llegué a casa un niño llorando, ya que no hay comida para él. Cuando intenté teléfono para por lo menos conseguir un crédito sin respuesta.

Call in to this busy chip shop sat and had a fab fish and chip all made to order it was fantastic and chips r all home made service was great as well see you soon we will be back

take out fish was soggy and the chips where good to break a window with they where that hard. this is the second time this has happened, think it is the cheap packaging that causes this get it sorted ..sad :(

Llama aquí hoy y decidimos comer en el. Cena pescado con pan y té ordenados. Cena de pescado era trajo y me dijeron que no tenían pan, alguien iba a la tienda y sería aquí lo antes posible. A 10 minutos de la comida vi un miembro de paseo personal, entrar en su coche y conducir por el pan. Regresó cuando la comida se había terminado con un número de panes de tienda local. Nadie vino a preguntarme si quería o pan aún era para pedir disculpas por el mal servicio. El pescado era delgada y llena de pasta y patatas fritas eran grasienta y no si de buena calidad. Cuando fui a pagar me dijo que el pan no había sido servida y dieron una disculpa pero me cobraron el precio completo que incluía el costo del pan no dan. Muy pobre visita a Génova. Sin duda alguna no es recomendable. Servicio de atención al cliente no parece importar a ellos. No sería recomendar una visita en cualquier momento pronto.

We called here on way home as had good meal here a while back

Really fancied fish and chips so decided to come here. What I got was only just ok, nothing to write home about. The fish was so greasy there were blobs of fat on the plate where it touched, about an inch and a half at each end of the fish was just batter with no fish present. What was close to each end was dried up and inedible. The chips were OK, cooked but nothing special. There were mushy peas on the side which had been nuked to boiling point. The skin on the inside of my mouth was raw for almost a week. Don't wast your money and go somewhere that takes a bit of care with what they put on the plate. I was very disappointed with the slap dash, couldn't be bothered attitude here. I won't be back. I paid £10 for a seriously burnt mouth and still hungry because of the state of the greasy food that I couldn't eat. I have had the take out here and it was a million times better although a bit on the greasy side.

Visited Here on Saturday 14th May. my husband and i along with our two kids had been out for the day in warrenpoint and decided to stop in newry for our tea and a treat for the kids on the way home. Couldn't fault this place. Was busy and had to wait for a seat to be cleaned but as soon as we walked in we were advised it would be just two minutes and right enough the staff were straight on it and had the table ready for us. My husband and i both had fish suppers which were fabulous and the chips so fresh. The kids had a kids burger and also a kids chicken nuggets and it was clean plates all round- portion sizes were just spot on. The service we received was excellent even though the staff were busy we were never forgotten about and everyone was just so accommodating. The kids got ice creams for the way home and again these were first class. All round an excellent stop and we will 100% be back and would recommend this to anyone!

my wife and I had a meal here on 22/4/2016, we got a fish and chip each the fish was very rubbery and discoloured it was to be a nice white colour but it was like a yellow grey and a very strong smell off it, fresh cod should be a nice white and no smell off it, and the chips was a bit hard under cooked I don't think we will be back,

Have visited this place on several occasions. On a couple of occasions I phoned the order ahead of arriving expecting to pick it up but I need not have bothered. I still had to wait in a very long queue despite ordering in advance. Portions have got smaller and fish isn't as good as it used to be. Genoa would do well reviewing how they serve their food and how to deal with telephone orders more efficiently.

Visited the Genoa Cafe in Newry recently with friends for some lunch. The service was excellent and the food was even better. The food was clearly prepared to order, it was not greasy and the staff couldn't have done more to accommodate myself and my friends. Furthermore, they had an extensive dessert menu to facilitate our every need. Their ice cream was second to none! I will definitely be returning in the near future.

Very long wait for a take away order which was quite simple yet they got wrong. I ordered a cheese burger the expectation being it will come with cheese..The chips were black, inedible and should not have been served as they were unfit for human consumption the server should not have put them in the dish. When their clearly black appearance was raised with the manager we were tartily informed this was not their responsibility.The fish was soggy greasy and congealed

After finishing a family meal to celebrate the birth of our daughter we phoned aheadat 8.45pm to ask if still open told yes untill 10pm . Called in at 9.09 to get ice cream for the kids. There were 12 of us. Told sorry resturant closed..... As we said we phoned and just looking ice cream told no T of coffee machine of. Then asked can we not just get ice cream. Staff member rolled her eyes. Then let them know we would take our money else where. Manger wasn't nice either. NOTE WARRENPONT BRANCH IS GREAT AND THIA DOES NOT REPRESENT THEM.

Visited a few times, the food is average however the staff are ignorant! The more 'experienced' staff have no respect for new trainee staff. It is very awkward for customers standing in the queue watching the trainee staff being very nervous while the other staff them a hard time.

Have been going to the Genoa for many years and enjoy their food. Only criticism is I hate when they are training staff and they don't allow them to write order down and the poor trainee is standing struggling and often has to ask for help and when I got home my order was wrong "we are all human, help your trainees please"

A first visit. They claim to be in business over 100 years. A take away codfish & chip is £6.40 so it's overpriced by about £1. The chip portion is generous. The double cooked chips are alright, but not very good, as they weren't crispy, as if they are not cooked at the proper temperature. Too expensive not to be just perfect and at over 100 years alleged experience it's time to serve perfect fish & chips. The cod was cooked to order, which is a plus, but I found the cod to be disappointingly quite thin. The batter is delicious and light though. The fish was good but again it should be more chunky at this high price. The staff certainly are a friendly bunch. Parking at the plaza is a real challenge. I won't rush back.

I grew up living in Ashgrove Park which overlooks this unit and many times watched it being built. Happy summers were spent at the old Genoa café in Warrenpoint which even today is an impressive operation.#Living in Belfast now, I often travel up and down to Newry and if it is after 6 we will generally head to the Genoa on the Belfast Road. The reason for this is one night late on the way home we called for a carry out and to be fair had one of the tastiest fish suppers in a long while and interestingly one which did not upset my stomach. I always had the breaded fish when I was in the Genoa Warrenpoint and so for old times sake had ot again and honestly it was really delicious. I think it often comes down to who is actually doing the frying and there is a skill in this. Over the years Newry has been blessed with iconic chippies...the Florentine, the Sateillite, the Roxburghe [that was where my late mother a Newry native said the best fish was to be had], but I use these examples as a possible reason for inconsistencies of product. The take away fish suppers we had were excellent and that experience prompted us to return again a few weeks later to eat in. On that occasion I had the battered cod meal and hubby had the chicken curry half and half and we finished off with the yummy ice cream. Again, both meals were lovely, but I know what other talk about when they say hard chips. However, their toilet was spotless and the wee young girl who served us was so pleasant and polite and helpful I tipped her. Just the right person to be waiting on tables, lovely wide smile and a great advert for the takeaway. So to be fair both experiences would make me revisit; however, I have found other reviewer's comments helpful from the point of view of being vigilant about hygiene. If staff are being left unmanaged that is not fair on them. That happened at a world branded fast food place in part of Belfast and it went to pot and is no longer there. So investment in staff training and team motivation and management are key here. Staff are a business' greatest resource and based on the visits I have had to the Genoa and the way staff were with me they too deserve such investment and yes, I will be back.

Visited the Genoa recently with my daughter. After ordering two fish dishes neither which were available we settled for a curry chip and burger. The curry sauce was watery and tastless and the burger full of gristle and fat. I've never come across such a poor excuse for a burger anywhere . The cafe looked clean and the waitress friendly but with such poor quality food I'll certainly not be back!

Now I have been back to this place since, and I can tell you that the food is not the best. There are a few things they do well such as their super sauce but the chips are always hard, cold and unpleasant. The staff are undertrained and the layout of the way they work is why. They do not let anyone write down the orders therefore the person at the till has to memorise multiple orders and shout them back for the cook to remember and the till staff to remember again. THIS is how mistakes are made so easily. If this was managed properly maybe some of the issues would go away but it does not take away from the fact that some of the food is disgusting and often tastes like disinfectant from staff not cleaning correctly.

Got a takeaway from here before and it tasted lovely so decided to call back and sit in. Judging by the continuous stream of people wanting takeout, we expected good food. When the food came the chips were hard and crispy, one of us couldn't even cut one in half and when we asked if they were refried chips they said they were. What?Poor selection of vegetarian food. Ice cream was nice, staff friendly.

My family and I were in Ireland visiting family and we decided to take about 10 of us out to dinner and we chose Genoa. The staff and food were great! All food came out fast and delicious! We ended the night with their amazing ice cream. Everything was perfect! Thank you Genoa!

I've eaten in both their Newry and the Warrenpoint locations. Both have the usual sandwich fare along with their great italian style ice cream counter. Not much table space for eat-in folks, but good for take away. Parking is a challenge some times.

Called in yesterday, all meals ordered were very bland and the waitress walked off mid order without taking drinks, won't be back.

I called at the fish and chip shop to buy a quick meal . From the que i expected that this was a good recommended restaurant . I ordered my meal and watched it being prepared . I was generally happy and awaiting my chips . Much to my horror a young female who was serving on the cash resister automated the chip fryer out pif the fat .. Used her fingers (ungloved) and squeezed a chip to see if it was cooked then wen back to giving out change . I was horrified and after complaining left quickly … Food hygiene not good and badly managed no manager on site.

WE have always gone to warrenpoint for our fish and chips so we thought thers a Genoa in newry now, we will try it, the fish was so well cooked the batter on one side was burned black, the fish inside was dry and it would have been hard to cut it even with a sharp knife,The chips were under cooked.I couldn't leave it because it was so bad, my husband rang them and said he was coming back with the worst fish and chips he ever had, They refunded his money, and he was told it was dry because it had been sitting around since last night.It was a very silly comment to make, the food was sub stantard.We won't be back there again.

we had been looking forward to some really good fish and chips. We had tried the Genoa Café, Warrenpoint, many times before and everything was good, so we thought something might have rubbed off to the Genoa Cafe in Newry. We had a take out and wanted to eat at home. When we got home and unwrapped our fish and chips it was just to find that the first box we opened had a big empty batter shell with an ounce of fish inside, the chips were undercooked and bland, what a disaster. The other portion wasn't much better, a little more fish, the chips just the same, of course, white and soggy. The Manager was called immediately and the food was returned the next day, the money was refunded for the portion which was taken back and apologies were made. The big shame is the staff in this place, whoever packed up the fish and chips must have seen what they gave to the customer, shame on them. We certainly won't return in a hurry, we'll just go back to Genoa Café in Warrenpoint.
