The Galley Cafe in Newry and Mourne

Food was mediocre and staff not very welcoming. Got charged extra for side of sweet potatoes, even though same price in Menu and mentioned choose your side free included. To top it up got charged 1.90 Gbp for Dips as did ask for ordinary Mayo without beeing told. Guess it was a one off.

It's an award winning chip shop, and that creates an air of expectation. Unfortunately, whilst good, it just didn't meet the expectation. It's very busy so it will take a while to get your food at busy times. The food was good but not great. When you pair thst with the food being expensive for a chip shop it resulted in the scores given. Loads of seating available outside. From which you can nearly see the sea when seated.

Lovely place with great portion sizes

Food is okay but staff are very unfriendly. Visiting caravan from Belfast we usually get our food here but lately it has become very unwelcoming. Give my son a takeaway curry chip with no fork to eat it with and didn’t even ask if we wanted salt… i asked for ketchup and she rolled her eyes at me! Give me my food in a paper bag covered in mayonnaise. Just not very pleasant! Don’t thinking I will bother next time!

Bit of a wait for food but well worth the wait as the food is excellent especially the fish

Extremely disappointed from yesterday's visit. Food under cooked and service terrible. Ask if salt and ginger was on ordered and it wasn't when we asked for it to put on they complained it was already wrapped . Then when order was complete staff Extremely rude when handing it over.

Charged £1.50 for mayonnaise. Wasn't told there would be a charge for a little sauce. First time this has ever happened in any restaurant I have ever eaten in. An automatic charge of £1 goes to their chosen charity (at least I hope it does) although you can ask to have this removed and most are aware of this if they take the time to read the notice on the wall. A better practice would be to ask the customer, on settling the bill, if they would like to donate £1 to the charity. Also present the customer with their detailed bill rather than being given a total to pay at the till. I had to ask for a receipt. This is probably only teething problems as I believe it's under new ownership. Having said all this, the food was good and this experience hasn't put me off from returning. A mai. meal for 2 without drinks £35.

Was up there today for a band parade popped in for some food It was very tasty my child ate all of it they have a nice outside seating area also

Had a Band Parade it took 1 hour for our food almost late everything else is fine we came at 5:15pm and the food was made at 6:15pm

As a regular customer over the years today I came with my children for dinner and got freezing cold grilled chicken straight from a fridge. After bringing it to the attention of the staff they proceed to give the food back to me microwaved which made the food taste like plastic. They still made me pay full price for it and I didn't even touch the food.

Everything is fresh, super tasty food straight from heaven!! Cooking here is done with love, you can taste it! Excellent quality from fresh fish to super tasty organic vegetables, very good steak and tasty chicken and very friendly service, very hospitable! I was there March 2025 and I had the scampi special with chips and coleslaw I expected it to be average but it was great. I would absolutely recommend here to anyone it’s a lovely family friendly place to eat.

Absolutely amazing fish and chips. Haddock & Cod were both spectacular, amazing chips and the desserts were 10/10. Couldn’t recommend this place enough!

Best fish and chips and staff..worth a visit .

I travelled quite a few miles to go to the Galley, and this is the last time I will visit that establishment !! I went in to order a carry out, there was only one other customer sitting waiting for his food. I stood for a full ten minutes if not more waiting to be served, no one behind the counter didn't even acknowledge me, in the end I had to speak with a member of the staff to get served, maybe it may have been because I was a stranger. Funny enough, while I was waiting for my food a lady came in and was served immediately To be honest, when I got the food it wasn't great, chips overcooked, batter on the fish was greasy, which basically made my mind up not to come back.

Called in for lunch while visiting family. We had the sandwich soup combo which came with salad, coleslaw and crisps and the soup with wheaten bread. The vegetable soup was delicious, one of the best I've tasted. The wheaten bread was brilliant. The staff were very friendly and we liked the atmosphere. Very busy which is always a good sign. If the locals eat there you know it's going to be good. Will definitely be eating there again next time we're down.

Food was good but in the space of 10 mins when I was there the staff messed up 3 separate orders,including mine and when I returned it ,I thought there were trying to accuse me of trying to get free food.very disappointed with staff,not the food.

I've been taking my kids here for years I've notice recently the kids chicken stripes have been terrible it's now got were I need to order two adult meals for a decent meal I'm a parent trying to treat my kids on a sat night come on gally step up for ur town customers over profit

Great place to eat , although I will say the chip tasted slightly nuty, everything was fantastic 👌. Maybe change the oil or maybe that's how it is ? I'm not sure 😕

IM 52 AND THIS IS BY FAR THE WORST PLACE I HAVE EVER EATEN OUT OF. I WOULDN'T EVEN CALL IT A RESTAURANT THE FOOD IS GHASTLY. FOOD COMES OUT ALMOST COLD. THE SCAMPI WAS INCREDIBLY BAD THE WORST IV EVER EATEN. WHEN YOU BIT INTO IT WAS AND EXPLOSION OF WATER AND COOKING OIL IN YOUR MOUTH IT WAS HORRENDOUS. HOW ANY ONE CAN CALL THEMSELVES A CHEF SERVING THAT GARBAGE I WILL NEVER KNOW. EVERYONE ELSE AT THE TABLE THOUGHT THERE FOOD WAS DISGUSTING. I GIVE IT A 0 OUT OF 10 AND TRUST ME IM BEING GENEROUS. WONT BE BACK NEAR IT.

Staying in Newcastle and we looked for a coeliac friendly takeaway and found The Galley. Staff could not have been more helpful in making sure our order was perfect and went above and beyond. Got two gluten free goujon meals and the food was incredible, the best gluten free chippy we've ever had with lovely gravy to go with it. Could not recommend more

Unreal food the nicest we have ever had

First time after passing many times being too busy with work but hearing good reviews I stopped and was glad I did fish and chips were spot on 😋

Was so looking forward to coming here after family had spoken about the food here. We come from visiting family in Cranfield. A family followed us in, and they were offered a table near straight away, but we had to wait, apparently because our pram wouldn’t fit. They were clearly friends because they sat talking with the waitress, while we waited 25 minutes later and were still offered one of the same booths where we ‘wouldn’t fit’. The waitress wouldn’t look at us taking our order, and clearly wanted to be elsewhere, rushing everyone. It wasn’t until one of us went to the bathroom that we realised there was high chairs in the hall that weren’t offered to us. When we asked for one the waitress just looked at us and told us to get it ourselves. To be fair, the food was lovely, but the service was disappointing.

We got takeaway yesterday, Burgers, Fish n Chips... Enormous portions. Breakfast today didn't dissapoint either. Huge Ulster Fry, great filter coffee. Staff is terrific.

We found The Galley Annalong after travelling through Newcastle, which was really busy with nowhere to park. We ordered chicken strips, hawaiian burger, chips and tea. The strips were hard as, burger was awful, tea tasted like one tea bag was used between two cups. But the chips were ok! We threw the lot away and drove on. Hard to understand how they won so many awards. Overseas travellers.

We called into The Galley Restaurant yesterday. Everything was first class, the service, friendly staff, food & price. I would recommend The Galley to anyone, I've been in it several times & it never fails to be good.

A little gem for delicious food..their fish and chips are worth a drive for...staff are just lovely nothing is too much for them.. definitely will be back

The service was excellant with plenty of staff who were very attentive. The food was very good and plentiful and the prices are reasonable. Think it is great that they cater for the older customers with special deal on the menu.

We arrived at 1:30pm on a busy Saturday with no booking. We had to wait in a short queue for a few minutes before getting our table. My husband ordered fish and chips which he thoroughly enjoyed. The batter was light and crispy and the chips were not greasy. He also commented on the mushy peas which he said were the best he had tasted in a long time. I ordered the special which was baked haddock served in a very tasty sauce with lots of prawns. There was also a generous side of freshly cooked vegetables which came with my meal. The desserts looked delicious but the main meals were so generous that, sadly, we had to pass on them. We will definitely call again when we are next in that area.

A very busy take away fish and chips shop with an extensive menu. It has a take away,a sit in and an outdoor eating area. Good is of high standards both in quality and quantity. Staff busy but still take time to be pleasant and patient. Prices reasonable.

Called into because we had heard this is an ‘award winning’ fish and chip shop. Disappointing as the fish was dry and the batter was not crisp. It looks like the fish had been pre cooked and then reheated when an order was placed. Noticed an advert offering an incentive when paying if you voted for them. Buying your votes do not make you award winning!!

If you have a small appetite this place is not for you !! Fantastic food & service, with HUGE portions 😋😋😋

Had dinner here this evening. I had baked cod and then lemon meringue pie and ice cream for dessert George had chicken and bacon with cheese and apple and black berry crumble. Lovely meal.

I had the chicken strip meal in here and ive to say the food was absolutely brillant my better half had loaded fries and they where awesome to would definitely try again

More than impressed with The Galley. There’s a reason why the chippy is always so busy, the food is exquisite. We sat in for the first time, with a cost of £70 for 4&1 toddler, full belly’s all round and everyone extremely happy. It’s much bigger inside than it looks outside. Photos pictures were the pulled pork burger & the stacked sandwich!

This review is for the takeaway part of the restaurant. We had visited years ago and remembered it being above average but this time, we were underwhelmed. The chips were dry and undercooked. Not what it used to be. Also, I've included photos of the current menu as the ones they have posted on Facebook are a couple years out of date.

Food is amazing… is what I would say if I ever got to eat it. Twice I’ve gone to use my voucher, for the takeaway to be closed early. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice.., you know the rest :(

We went to The Galley chip shop this evening. We ordered a 6oz double decker cheeseburger with onions and red sauce a sausage bap with onions and red sauce and a 4oz double decker burger with red sauce. We placed our order at 17:17, at 18:00 we still had no food so I went to the till and asked what was going on and I was told there were a lot of app orders and our food wouldn't be too much longer. In the meantime there were several people who ordered after us and got their orders within 10 minutes of ordering!! We finally got our food at 18:10 nearly an hour after ordering!! When we finally did get our food our burgers were cold and like rubber and were completely drowned in red sauce

I live 56 miles from it and still drive to get a fish.. hands down the best iv ever had

Stopped on Sunday and ordered a Scampi and lg chip and a large Cod supper and what I got wasn't brilliant at all. The Fresh Cod was nice but surrounded by a tasteless and unseasoned batter, which was a bit of a disappointment having heard so many rave reviews on this offering and seeing so many awards in the takeaway on display. The Scampi looked like it was the remaining batter remnants that float in the fryers in most chippies. And if it had of been tasty I wouldn't have passed much remarks but I wouldn't be rushing back to be honest. One positive is that the chip portion sizes were huge.
