Friendly staff. Went for meerkat meals which seemingly they don't do but the app promises they do. Staff helped all they could. Food was good and for st David's not too overpriced.

From the moment I picked up the phone, I could tell booking here was a bad idea. It took 20 minutes and 3 separate attempts to make our booking. We ordered our food ahead of time, and the restaurant was basically empty, despite this the food took an hour to come out and arrived cold. The food (roast dinner) was not great either, the portion size was small. On top of this, we brought a cake and candles ahead of time as we were celebrating a birthday. After dinner we indicated to the staff to bring it out, who proceeded to plop the cake to the table packaged in the plastic box without any candles in. It was like they were unfamiliar with the concept of a birthday cake. Would not recommend, especially for a roast and especially for a birthday.

I have some bad meals before elsewhere in my life, but service and meal here was way beyond substantial and I would highly recommend you stay away especially during high season. Firstly turned up to our table being given away and no table available. No manager to sort it just a front of house team of what looked like barley legal teenagers that had no clue how to run a restaurant especially a busy one. The first two lads that tried to sort a table just gave up and began to ignore us when they couldn't find one, a young lady came out and I told her we were waiting for a table and one had become free so could she clean it for us. She did clean it, but the surface was so sticky you couldn't even peel your menu off with without a struggle. I knew this was the beginning of a disaster and should have just left at this point but it gets alot worse. Tried to use the qr code to order, wouldn't work. Went to the bar to tell them this and again they just melted down and just stood there staring at me as if they wanted me to resolve the issues, after some gentle persuasion they figured out that they needed to put the food through on the till. This is surprisingly where it got worse again and this isn't the worst part. Waiting over an hour for food, so we asked where it was. We were told we were next to have food, that there was a staffing issue, the chef had left early and the manager had to step in as the grill chef. What chef leaves early on a booming bank holiday weekend where the rest of the staff are completely incapable of doing the basics of their jobs. After another 3 tables of meals and another 45 minutes, we asked again where our food was. Sit tight for this next one, it gets worse again They told our friends we were with they couldn't have the fish they ordered, because the manager / step in chef couldn't get the batter to work so couldn't serve us fish. Batter in a commercial kitchen is simply powder you add milk to, what human is incapable of this. So they were offered scampi as a solution but no refund to absorb the lower cost so they had to go up to the bar themselves to get this refund after another melt down from the incapable staff. Then after waiting for our second half of meals for a further 45 minute so over an hour and 45 into waiting. We were told our burgers had been given away and hour earlier. So we were left with no food for a further half hour and then randomly two burgers appeared. Both missing salad and sauce. Just chicken thrown in a dry bun and a burger thrown in a bun. Both so over cooked they were unedidle and I wouldn't of even fed them to my dog. During all this palava we were asked  for a manager over ten times as the young staff were completely incapable of dealing with anything and all we kept getting told was the manager wouldn't leave the kitchen to see us, which I'm sure is breaking the law just to leave junior staff to deal with the sinking ship. So after 3 hours we were left hungry and a load of incapable staff. Finnaly after we waiting until the very end of the night the manager finnaly left the kitchen and had no choice but to face us. She said she would make no excuses for the horrendous experience we had been through and then proceeded to offer us over 20 excuses. After a bit of back and forth we managed to obtain a refund. After speaking to other locals and people who have eaten here it seems it's an ongoing issues they have with staff and not this season either. The Easter weekend is kind of like a trail by fire for the establishments in this holiday town, before the insanity of summer and I can safely say they failed at providing any kind of service level this weekend so during high season it is going to be a complete waste of time. I highly recommend you never ever step foot in this establishment and definitely do not part with your money for the substandard food and service they offer. I will be taking this complaint as high as I can go in hope to rectify and make sure none else has to have the experience Full review in photos

Having booked a table for 1pm we finally got our meals at 2pm, however prior to receiving our meals we received a message from the chef delivered by the little waitress girl that our meals will come out shortly but unfortunately we our Yorkshire puddings will follow later as the chef can’t guarantee how long it will take for the yorkshires to rise ! The meal was as cold and as anemic as an Eskimo waiting for a blood transfusion! The message from the chef should have been delivered by the manager or the chef himself! Not a good experience and will not return And the gents toilets need to be checked hourly and cleaned , if that’s what the toilets are like I don’t think I’d want a room there !

Visited at the start of April so still relatively quiet time for tourism , hence on 4 stars for atmosphere and for food as we only had a perfectly good breakfast. The hotel had a great location , just a stoned throw from the centre and cathedral with easy walk down to the coastal path. The hotel main areas were warm ( chilly out in the evening ) and the service was excellent, helpful and friendly. The room was above expectation. Well decorated, all the facilities expected, including armchairs and a very comfortable bed. ( room 9 ). Everything was spotlessly clean. The restaurant advertised a number of daily specials offers , usually a meal for about £14/15 including a drink. I would recommend this hotel to anyone looking for the perfect stay in St David's.

We stayed in a family room for 2 nights. The room was clean and comfortable although a little warm. We finally managed to turn off the radiator in the bathroom as it was extremely hot to touch - not ideal, especially with a young child. I was wary after booking as had seen reviews complaining about disrepair in the rooms but the building is nearly 200 years old! There were a couple of cracks in the plaster where the coving was but there was nothing that would be a hazard! The staff were friendly and the food was lovely when we had an evening meal. We would definitely return.

Having attended your Christmas lunch event, I want you to know how angry, upset and disappointed we are. At St David’s for a festive get away; looked a while back for somewhere for Christmas Day lunch. Chose The Grove, what a mistake! On arrival, no prosecco greeting us - pre booked. Table booked for 1.30, starters arrived at 2.15. Clearly bought in, cheap, poor quality and not what we were expecting for what we were paying. Waited until 2.50. No main course arrived. Table of 2 next to us sent theirs back twice. We were not prepared to wait around and receive their returned meals. We paid for our wine and left. Still awaiting a response from The Grove despite emailing them on the day itself. Hence this review.

I would like to preface this by saying that I have been dining at The Grove for over a decade and used to love nothing more. Sadly, that is no longer the case. The food quality is now something you would expect in a Wetherspoons. The waiting staff look constantly bored and clearly haven’t been trained efficiently. In the past three months I have dined there as many times, and not once did someone come to ask if everything was okay with our meal – a very basic practice in the world of hospitality; and even when Derek was on his own with the bar and kitchen, he still made time to ensure everything was well with our service. Pride in appearance is clearly not encouraged anymore. Although judging by the ‘uniform’ of the manageress (scruffy jeans, trainers and a fleece that has definitely seen better days – she always seems to wear the same clothes), it is easy to see why the presentation bar is so low. Presentation and first impressions mean a lot in the hospitality trade – something I worked in for many years. The bar staff with unbrushed hair that should be tied back, scruffy trainers rather than shoes, leaning all over the bar when chatting to colleagues, again looking bored and as if they would rather be anywhere else - that may be the case, but that’s surely not how they are being paid to look or how they have been trained to carry themselves, if they have been trained at all. The standard has slipped tremendously – and as for the topics of conversation loudly discussed between staff members in the public areas …if I wanted to hear that, there are specific phone lines available. Maybe to be expected from the teenage waiting staff (a very large maybe) but certainly not from someone looking in their mid-forties (presumably management as they were not in the branded polo shirts). The Grove has lost its sparkle. Whilst marquees and event planning are wonderful, if you start to build on a crumbling foundation, you will surely fail. I genuinely hope that this wonderful building can regain what it has lost and that the current management don’t continue to run it further into the ground.

After attending a beautiful Harvest Service at the Cathedral thought would be nice to have Sunday lunch at The Grove where she and her husband had had a lovely meal a couple of years ago (recently bereaved). What a mistake the food was dire. My friend couldn't even cut her beef or Yorkshire pud and my vegetarian tart was black as were both our roast potatoes and the mash had the consistency of 'Smash' . We had pre-ordered pudding two apple crumbles where we played hunt the apple and which had the texture of wallpaper paste (left uneaten). We complained after the first course and the nice waitress came back with apologies from the chef he had probably set the oven too high! He never approached us himself. Spoke to a lady as we were leaving who said what a shame perhaps we could have a free meal when we came again (the meal cost us £40) . We went back to our rental cottage in Solva went to the amazing Bay View Stores for bread, cheese and salad (£7)and opened a bottle of wine (we could have saved ourselves quite a bit of cash had we done that in the first instance) . It was a lovely memory of my friend's time with her late husband spoiled)

The hotel is nice and in a great location - 5 min walk from the centre and cathedral. Plenty of parking spaces and check in was simple. The room was nice, although there was a slight smell of dog in a corner and cobwebs in the ceiling and light fixtures. The main issue we had (not enough to complain - just a suggestion) was that we were in room 8, which as we found out had its window next to the side entrance of the hotel - used after 23:00hrs. We found the room hot, so slept with the window open. Because of this, we heard other guests returning to the hotel - using the side entrance and talking outside. We were then woken again at about 0500hrs by two men speaking directly outside of our window. In the morning, while checking out, we noticed a smoking bin next to the side entrance - possibly used as a smoking area. Maybe it would be a suggestion to move this bin to discourage people to stand directly outside of guest windows talking? The returning guests we accepted, but suspect that the two men talking outside the window at 0500hrs could be hotel staff. I don’t expect the side entrance to be moved, but I would hope by moving the smoking bin and moving it to another area may help guests get a better nights sleep. Other than this issue, we were happy with our stay.

Really disappointed as we have eaten here several times before. We expected a wait as it was a busy bank holiday weekend, however over 1 hour 10 mins for our food. We were on a large table and as they had put the order through separately, all the food arrived at different times, which was fine. However, when it did arrive, probably half of the dishes were inedible. Things were missing, which tried to be rectified, however, the missing guacamole off the nachos came out warm, so obviously frozen and heated to serve!! Nobody came to check on us throughout the meal. Microwaved, pre packed hunters chicken, had to be returned. All of the dishes seemed pre packed and microwaved. Would not recommend, which is a shame as one member of staff, forget her name, really tried but couldn't do anything about the food unfortunately.

Came here upon seeing the steak and drink offer and a discount that my party and I assumed would be valid, provided one member payed seperately. This was not true whatsoever as they had not only ran out of steak, but also fish, steak, and did not allow our discount. Moreover, the food itself was average at best for over the odds prices as my “ultimate” chicken burger came with minimal lettuce and a dry, crunchy bun. The service was disappointing and unprofessional as one party member received his meal over 15 minutes after the rest of us. The fact that after all of this, they had the audacity to refuse our discount is a complete joke given the service. Better off spending the extra money at the bishops or cooking some cheap steaks from the local CKs superstore.

We've always visited The Grove when we've been holidaying in St David's, and have enjoyed some good meals there. This year however will be the last time. We were told on arrival that there was a 35 minute wait for food, which we decided reluctantly would be okay as our 2-year old could probably manage that but not much longer. It actually took an hour, during which time we watched every other table complain about waiting times and cold food (there were only about 5 tables eating). Apparently the chef was in hospital and the manager was cooking instead - but looking at other reviews this wasn't the only night they had issues, so was that just an excuse? The food is Wetherspoons quality. And most importantly, I don't think it was a coincidence that I was sat on the toilet for four days afterwards with the worst case of what I assume is food poisoning I've ever had, from the veggie chilli. That kind of took the shine off the second half of our holiday I can tell you. My husband visited the gents while we were there and they were so disgusting he had to tell the bar staff they might want to check on the toilets. The staff were overwhelmed and therefore unprofessional, despite there not being many customers - it's just that no customer was happy. Even discounting the understandable angry vibe in the room, the restaurant really lacks atmosphere and feels more like a cafe now. It's a real shame how this place has gone downhill since Marstons took over. It's in a good location, the beer garden is big and great place for kids to run around, and under Brains it was always nice. We shall not be visiting again now, if it even remains open that long, and my poor stomach will be all the better for it.

Mentioned and was told, staff hadn't turned up, and the manager was on cooking as chef was in hospital. The 2 gentleman on the 1 till, were stressing as customers complained. To be told that the manager was cooking and short of staff, I think if they had shut kitchen down and decided not to do food, then people would stay for drinks. This whole experience was disgusting. It was a comedy of errors full on. To watch staff stress with sweat, and run and I mean run, was completely unprofessional. To be told there was shortness of staff with staff not showing up, was unprofessional. Promises of 30mins to 45mins is bad enough to be promised.

We stayed 2 nights and ate at the hotel on the second night. The restaurant area is set out a bit like a cafe and the food was okay. The biggest let down however was the poor state of the bedroom decor.

Got a table immediately after entering, must order food at the bar. They were out of food items, and was told it'd be atleast an hour for mains. Mozzarella balls for starter, was very nice. Main of cowboy burger arrived without its bacon or lettuce. Whilst eating that, my dessert arrived. No atmosphere in the dining area, wasn't even music playing for a large portion of being there. Food was adequate, it filled a hole and wasn't disgusting, nothing outstanding, my burger was overcooked, I had the sticky toffee pudding for dessert, it was barely warm, not much taste of toffee. Service was redeemed by fixing the mistake with my order, but again brought down by the mistake, at a time where it wasn't busy. Wouldn't eat here again unless I was stuck for something.

Three stars as The Grove was the only place in St David's that was willing to be open at 3:30pm. We went to eat there as everything else was closed. It looked like a nice place but the service was not friendly or welcoming. The tables were sticky. The food was not very good at all and took a very long time. They were not very child friendly despite having a kids menu. It was ok but I wouldn't return.

Hotel was in a great location, clean and the staff were very friendly and professional. The only downside was witnessing fellow customers being rude to staff, which was uncomfortable and unnecessary. We hope anyone reading this will take a second to think before they openly criticise and speak down to people, who are just trying to do their job. Thank you again to the team, and hopefully see you soon.

We pre booked to have an evening meal as we were a party of 7. Upon arrival, we were made to wait next to the bar, whilst the barman put 2 tables together and re arrange the chairs, so they were clearly not organised about who they had booked in for the evening, which was a red flag. We then waited for around 20 minutes standing at the bar for the 1 and only member of staff on duty to take our individual drinks orders and prepare them and pay. Having eventually sat down, we chose our meal choices and returned to the bar for another lengthy ordering and paying session. We waited for about half an hour before the barman also acting as the waiter came to our table to advise that 3 or 4 different meal choices weren't available. We quickly had to select alternative meals. The meals eventually arrived but in a very staggered way. My chicken burger was very dry with skinny fries, which I could have had at MacDonalds. The barman/waiter was so overstretched for time, at no point did he ask if we wanted any sauces or how our meals were and if everything was alright, which to me is a basic rule of good hospitality. Two of our party ordered a pudding, as they had only had a starter with no main meal. They had a 30 - 40 minute wait for their pudding's, they almost cancelled. One of the pudding was burnt, probably over heated in the microwave. I would never visit this place for a drink or food again.

The tables chairs and menu were sticky. We ordered just as the place got really busy, it looked like the staff couldn't cope but our food came out on time. It was disgusting. I rarely complain about food but this was awful. Nachos were old crumbs with the cheapest products on, steak that looked and tasted like it had been microwaved, over cooked pies you needed a chainsaw to cut. The chips where covered in back specks and it wasn't pepper. I assume it was charcoaled bits from the uncleaned baking tray. We ate some of our meals and left the faulty towers experience behind. There are far better dining experiences to be had in St Davids

The restaurant is a shambles, would not recommend at all. On ordering waiting over 10 minutes to serve the 5 drinks. Ordered the drinks and had to remind them to actually do half of them. Reverend James was flat - told them and then proceeded to serve another that was also flat…. Clearly not realising the gas was out as other pints were coming into the restaurant flat. Ordered gammon- waited over 20 minutes with the gammon in front of my mother without chips and onion rings it was supposed to come with- with other tables food coming out. Told one member of staff within 5 minutes of the gammon arriving to not see from them again. When they finally did arrive the gammon was stone cold. At no point did they offer to take the plate in a recook it fresh or Atleast keep it warm. Members of staff sat outside every 5 minutes with the door wide open smoking with the restaurant constantly smelling of cigarettes. Not great with a baby of 5 weeks. Ultimate chicken burger first arrived without a bun and chips and then arrived with a bun and chips but without any sauce and salad, and cold. Ordered and paid for onion rings, they didn’t arrive. Told the server, confirmed the order that had gone to the kitchen, still didn’t arrive. Toilets had not toilet paper and told a member of staff and they looked genuinely more concerned about that than the cold gammon that had been sat in front of my mother for twenty minutes. Still wasn’t replenished 15 mins later. Couldn’t get out of there fast enough and went somewhere else for pudding. Honestly atrocious.

It was bank holiday weekend so as expected very busy. Food was fine...came out pretty quickly. Catered for 2 Coeliac which was great! I had a s/f chick burger really nice. Lasagne was a bit dry left under warmer I guess but ok. I just wanted to say well done to Jeremy. He was basically running food on his own and it was a bit too much for him. The Grove is a big place and there is a large garden. I thought he did an excellent job with the pressure he was under. Please pass this onto him! Also Connor kept a cool head and was helpful. The Grove has been very hot and miss for a few years but I must say it was very nice on Sunday night. Well done!

Ordered three steak's and one hunters chicken. We asked for two medium and one rare steak. All three steaks came well done and very fatty and no thicker than a slice of bacon and grey in colour. Mushrooms were so over cooked they very curled up on the edges and the peas were all wrinkled and over cooked. The hunters chicken had no bacon and very little bbq sauce . When the waiter came to collect our plates and asked us how was your food? We told him of our concerns and he said , we have a new italian chef and he's trying to get to grips with our menu. When we sat down another couple were sending there food back as the burger was cold. Very disappointed with the food. We won't be visiting again any time soon.

AVOID AT ALL COSTS! Pulled into what looked like a lovely pub for breakfast. Turned up at 11.03am to be told breakfast finished at 11am, absolutely understandable. We were told by the staff member, the cafe across the road sold breakfast until 11.30, so decided to pop over there to feed my pregnant wife's cravings. We had planned to go back into the pub for a drink after and was also going to even book an evening meal for that evening. I popped to my van to get a water bowl for my dog when I saw I large screw placed statistically under my wheel, perfectly placed so when I drove off it would puncture my tyre. We had only been parked up for half hour. I can imagine they get a lot of tourists parking in their car park without using their facilities which must be very frustrating. However to consciously sabotage someone's property and endanger my pregnant wife and child's life, I'm absolutely DISGUSTED!!!!! We were driving home that evening too, via the motorway, thank god I spotted it. Who knows what could have happened if my tyre had blown out!! I popped in after having a few hours to gather my thoughts and just explain how different the situation could have ended if i hadnt spotted it! I approached the staff member who couldn't apologise enough, who stated it was just them and the landlord in! They "couldn't believe the landlord would stoop that low". I rarely ever make a fuss, but some things need to be addressed and I hope this situation is dealt with in a SAFER way next time! Idiot!

Booked a table for two via the website at 17.45 and duly received a confirmation text and email. Within twenty-minutes the table was cancelled by text and email without any apologies. On phoning to ask if there was the possibility of an earlier table the rude voice on the phone said they were booked up all night and there was no way I could have a table - no sign of remorse at all. When I explained that I’d booked on the website earlier and asked if they knew the website was taking bookings he denied it was. When I explained I had the evidence in the form of the emails and bookings, he said “we’re short staffed, and I can’t help you” and hung up the phone. At every stage in the conversation I was reasonable, even-voiced and courteous. All I got in return was exasperation, no apology or “I’m sorry you were let down. On behalf of the Grove can I apologise, we hope that you come and visit us another night”. I am local to St Davids - visit often when I work in the area and will be sure to tell everyone I meet about the attitude. Of course computers make mistakes and tables get double booked. How we in the public facing positions (as I am) handle them are the mark of the establishment. First, phone to apologise don’t send an automated text or email - after all you want to draw in customers not drive them away. Second, if a customer contacts you after a mistake has been made then listen courteously and not with exasperation. Thirdly, apologise on behalf of the restaurant (good customers know it’s unlikely to be your personal fault). Fourthly, try to offer a solution (can I book you in for another night, would you like me to recommend some other local eateries you could try). Finally REMEMBER you are the ambassador for that business at that moment - future business rests in your hands!

I haven't lived in South Wales for a while, so this was my first visit to a Brains pub post the Marstons takeover. I was aware that the Grove had been a flagship Brains hotel, so I was intrigued to see it. I have no idea what is going on there at the moment, but AVOID. There is mention of the pub closing after Easter for 'essential maintenance' and they're offering 30% off all main meals everyday. Despite the discount offer, I was the ONLY customer in the entire pub. The draught beer is all off because the "cellar is too far away from the bar". There is a very pleasant and professional eastern european guy there who appears to be the GM, and is desperately trying to hold it all together, but it has clearly lost it's way. There is a static caravan in the car park and a completely incongruous pool table in the middle of the restaurant. I felt that I would be asking for trouble if I tried the food, so I ate at the Premier Inn!

We went with the intention of ordering breakfast, there was an older blonde woman who rudely greeted us when we walked in, she asked if we were gonna finish our takeaway coffees (they were empty and we would’ve happily ordered more drinks there) and then in front of some guy who was cooking at the back she asks if we could dine and he just nodded in front of us, what a terrible atmosphere. She then showed us to our table pointed said anywhere, we changed our mind and just walked out. We went down to Ronni’s instead and their customer service was excellent, very welcoming and food was perfect.

Brilliant two night stay! So from the moment we arrived we were blown away by how picturesque it was! Literally in the middle of no where surrounded by sheep which is perfect for us. We got a free upgrade on our room too which was perfect, the room was really clean and comfy beds and lovely view too! Not to forget the spa which was sooo relaxing and just perfect again really good value to say you get to use the spa facilities too in your stay. The only two things letting this stay down is we had REALLY noisy neighbours from upstairs playing loud music till 11 but we did phone reception and complained as it was annoying after a while and we wouldn’t hear the tv! It did quieten down but not much and you could hear every single footstep they made. Also the food is really really overpriced I mean £20 for burger and chips or fish and chips is ridiculous! We just did a just eat order to the hotel in the end. Apart from that it was a lovely stay and would come again. Apologies for the lack of pictures we took mainly videos of our room
