The grill room at Airth castle provided great food. Dinner on first night if stay was on the inclusive package. The menu was small but had plenty of variety. I started with the mushrooms in blue cheese, then had the chicken with beetroot, sqaush, potatoes and crunchy kale. The jus or gravy to me was tasty. My other half had the haddock fish cake followed by the haggis burger. The chukdren had the winter berries starter, grilled chicken and fries. Breakfast day 2 was self serve continental and full scottish. Coffee was lovelybtoo. Lunch day 2 the children had the fish taco and loved it. Followed by ice cream. We both had a wrap an sandwich with fries which were lovely. Dinner day 2 was on the £25 per person for dinner deal. I tried the chicken liver pare followed by the venison. Both were lovely. Other half had fillet steak. He enjoyed it. The only critism was service was slower than expected. However this may be because there was a wedding and a party function on as well. Dinner

Lunch with a friend. Meals werent what we ordered/ what was on menu. No chicken in the chicken caesar salad and the winter salad was just a huge bowl of house salad with chick peas- no feta, pumpkin etc as on menu. Had to leave table to go and find server. Someone eventually brought us a bowl of chicken and a bowl of feta to augment our half eaten meal. No recognition of getting it wrong when it came to the bill either!! £60 for 2 leafy salads, 2 halloumi fries, 1 tea and 1 coffee- not good value.

After looking forward to Christmas lunch for months and inviting 30+ members of family to what I understood was a well respected establishment I have left with a bad taste in my mouth (and that's not from the inadequacy of the food on offer). Paying £65 for Christmas Dinner I would have expected a luxury experience but this sadly was not the case. On arrival we were hearded in to a crowding dining hall like farmed cattle. After sitting down at the table I was served a lentil soup that had been left sat in the kitchen since the beatles were in the charts! Cold is an understatement. Shortly after this initial debacle, several members of our party left before even "enjoying" the overcooked beef that was on offer after queuing for the buffet for 35 minutes. I did however decide to stay and sample the carvery but did find that said beef was tougher than a sudoko puzzle after 18 pints! The turkey was tasty however so must give marks for this. The vegetables were wattery and had a distinct lack of seasoning and the Yorkshire puddings were drier than a Saharan summer. The hall had a star performer from the classic children's TV Programme The Singing Kettle which was clearly well organised but the decibel levels were astronomical! Screaming at my young son from 3ft away isn't my idea of a Christmas to remember! There was also an elderly lady who had felt unwell and vomited outside the front door where the smokers were standing. I did see a member of staff notified of this incident so I had assumed that this unfortunate mess would have been swiftly cleared but after several hours I returned to the scene to find the solidified vomit remained. It reminded me of the beef. The wine on sale at the bar was watered down, the draught lager was underwhelming and the staff in the dining hall (no fault of their own and absolutely not a responsibility they should have to burden) were noticeably untrained. Not to mention the lack of direction from any members of management. In 31 years of dining out for Christmas lunch (Covid being the only exception) this was, by some distance, the worst meal experience to date. I now have to explain to my distant family members, who have travelled from as far as Montevideo in Uruguay, that this isn't the experience I had in mind when I asked them to make the journey. Hopefully any guests unfortunate enough to have booked for next year already are treated to a far better experience. If you plan to make no improvements to the event, I'd send them to a soup kitchen instead. P.S. here is a photo of the dust on my fingers when I ran my hand along the wall beside my table. The lack of care for what should be such a magical day is upsetting and I will be contacting the health board about the asbestos infused environment I was forced to consume my "food" in. Merry Christmas

First the staff especially the bar tender were amazing ,so I put no fault on them at all. Me and my partner's seats collapsed underneath us , I have never return a meal in my life time but I had to ,what was advertised on the menu sounds lovely but what I received was one breast of chicken cut in half dry , two ( micro sized) smallest burnt cubes of sweet potato, three very thin slices of mushroom ,it was all completely over cooked (I've been fine dining) but this portion size and quality is even below par with weatherspoons quality , The children's fish was ringing in oil ,and they couldn't eat it ,as they were complaining that it's was fishy, slimy and watery , The deserts were okay but tasted like it was pre made puddings from the bookers Overall it's actually the worst meal I've ever had and at premium prices , The staff done there best to resolve the situation and handled it well and the front of house staff are an asset to that hotel ,it was that bad we all had to laugh about it .

The food is awful for a hotel restaurant which has a lot of potential. It is overpriced and not value for money at all. I don't mind paying those prices for good quality food but the food here was embarrassingly bad. It is as though a child had been given all the ingredients and told to go wild. The presentation was shocking, actually laughable. Most of the food arrived cold which being a table of 2 and perhaps only one of six tables in the restaurant, was poor. The manager did rectify the bill after we expressed our dissatisfaction but later in the evening while serving us at the hotel bar made a remark which was very unprofessional. Wouldn't even give it another chance to see if they improve as I've had better fast food. We actually ordered a takeaway to our room that evening. Spice magic if you're unfortunate enough to stay at this hotel, does a good kebab.

Visited for weekday lunch and it was quiet. The setting is lovely but everything else was a bit of a let down. As a local, I’ve always held Airth Castle in high regard but having eaten here twice I really won’t be back. Only one waitress with blonde hair and glasses paid any attention to us while others we dealt with left us sitting without drinks and then didn’t bring us the bill after asking. We had soup which was nice to be fair but no butter for the bread. They were clearly also getting ready for a busy night or wedding so we were treated to a bit of a circus act while around 6 staff shouted table numbers and shuffled tables around particularly loudly. With more love and attention this could be worth the money but right now it doesn’t live up to the reputation I thought it had. Oh and invisible speed bumps in the car park - beware!

We went for dinner at Airth Castle for dinner with family. The dining area was quite busy on a Saturday night. I had prawns and the steak, my folks had salmon and chicken. My prawns were poor, almost as if they had been frozen for months. They were crunchy. The steak itself was good and cooked well but the pepper sauce was very disappointing - I would describe it as a bit of a pepper bovril. The vegetables on the chicken dish were raw and were untouched. The salmon was fine. It wasn’t a particularly creative menu. Whilst the service staff were good, there was no observation of things being untouched. In summary cooking quality was pretty low. I’d expect quality to marry up alongside the ‘4 star’ hotel prices. Airth Castle seems to be a bit of a shambles, they are constantly saying they are understaffed. Whilst you can forgive this over the short term, this has been the case for 6 months. We have tried to join the gym since November and they won’t do lunch at the moment. There will be plenty of people looking for jobs. The lack of competition in the local area doesn’t force them to improve. The review is partly aimed at the abject nature of the business. The marketing and website is great, but the day to day running needs to improve, and not using excuses for months on end.

Attended the restaurant with friends, ordered drinks and food, told 20 minutes later that my drink of choice wasn't available, 50 minutes after we ordered our food it was over cooked! Waiting staff were friendly enough, but left without eating. I would not recommend this establishment. Staff behind the bar where noticeably under the influence of something which was well observed by most of the people there often passing remarks on their condition.

Not great, have reviewed on the hotels main sight. Food was overcooked and cheap. We waited hours for food that had obviously sat under a hot plate. Unfortunately won’t be back. They’ve said this is refurbished and new, it’s not. It’s damp smelling, shabby furniture and below average food. Staff are brilliant but they can only do so much.

Where to start? We had been at Airth Castle 2 years ago for christmas dinner and it was excellent 25 people all seated together, adults and children. It was a carvery which was great. This year we had 3 separate tables sat right at the kitchen and an exit out of the restaurant. The kids decided they all wanted to sit together at the last table, within 10 minutes they all had their jackets back on it was freezing!! We were seated at 4.30pm it took 20 minutes to start taking our order never asked if we wanted drinks although we had pre ordered buckets of beer and wine 25.00 for 6 Corona and 25.00 for a very average Malbec as well as bottles of prosecco which was not on the table! We had one waitress and one waiter. We were told it was table service and you could not go to the bar my husband as a non drinker waited 40 minutes for a bottle of irn bru. So onto the meal Turkey was not bad the beef on the other hand had obviously been sitting all day it was solid and chewy and hardly any gravy. Our children at the last table did not eat anything for 1 hour 30 minutes. Every time we spoke to the manager we were told it's just coming were sorry for the delay!!! The first table had finished their mains before the kids got their soup!! Totally unacceptable. We asked if the kids could get moved to another table which was vacant, there was actually a few vacant tables to be fair at this point they said no as it was going to be reset for another family who by the way had already been waiting 40minutes who then decided they were not waiting any longer. Please can someone tell me how Airth Castle got this so wrong??? If it wasnt for the fact that we are all family and we were all together, we had to make the best out of a bad situation, or this could if been a complete wash out. I had heard rumours that this place was going down hill and I prayed that they would get their act together for christmas but I was wrong!! The last 3 reviews of this place have been spot on and I hope Mr Stephen McLeod enjoyed his christmas dinner as I certainly didn't!!!

We moved room and the reception staff tried to smooth things over by asked the head waiter to make our evening meal special. The ignorant, arrogant waiter could not be bothered. Stayed the night after a wedding to recover gently before a long drive home. Went for dinner at 8.30 and with another wedding going on the service was patchy at best and we almost left after being sat there for 15 minutes unattended. However when it came the food was good, if a bit expensive (£15 for a chicken ceaser salad). Sadly quite a few of the fittings are damaged and the open plan bar space means you’re battling against a wedding party to be heard. Some screens might be an idea rather than a row of chairs!

We have both stayed and eaten here many many times but sadly feel that the hotel is in need of quite a big 're furb. We had Sunday lunch today and had a booking for 1.30. We left at 3.15 having waited all that time for our meals. Dessert never arrived so we decided to pay and leave. We know one of the members of staff very well and she was so embarrassed at the way the Restuarant was run today. It wasn't busy at all and we were at a loss as to why it took so long to have our food served. We are local to airth castle and this has been our experience a few times now in the Restuarant which is such a shame and I'm sure must reflect on the hotel. I'm not sure what kind of system is employed in the kitchen but it clearly doesn't work, as to wait nearly 2 hours for food is unacceptable. There were 2 managers today and both run off their feet. In order for us to consider going back it would be lovely if some changes could be made. Even when we decided to pay and leave, the young waiter did not apologise or offer an explanation as to why we didn't get our desserts. Perhaps further training in customer service would be a good idea. We were seated between another 2 tables and each of them had a long wait for food also. Sadly it's the waiting staff who bear the brunt of the complaints. Something needs to be changed ASAP in the Restuarant as it's such a lovely place.

We had a lovely afternoon tea here recently. I must say I was a bit apprehensive as a lot of recent reviews have been very negative. There was plenty of food for two consisting of two different types of pastries, lovely fresh sandwiches, little scones with jam and cream and a selection of cakes and little desserts. The table was set with a jug of water and there was a choice of tea or coffee. We were asked if we had any allergies and preferences and about 15 minutes our food arrived. The staff were really nice and we were asked if we wanted to take away any leftovers. I wouldn't hesitate to return.

As suggested at check-in at the hotel, we made a reservation at this on-site restaurant for dinner. Turned out not to be too necessary, as there were not many other diners. This is important because there was therefore no excuse for the service. The chicken caesar salad was very good, as were the drinks, but my steak had to be sent back for being overcooked. In addition, my father ordered a coffee with dessert that never came but was put on the bill, which we had to eventually go up to the hostess stand to pay because after asking two servers for the cheque it was never brought to the table. We were also overcharged for the wine, unfortunately caught only after the charge had been processed. We both ordered small glasses and were charged for medium. The excuse was that even when you order a small it is brought in a medium sized glass. That is fine, but guests should be charged for what they order no matter what size glass servers decide to put it in.

Overall very happy however a few things happened who h brought the overall score down. Firstly the positives; lovely setting within the huge conservatory, lovely modern dark and silver contrast decoration which was very tasteful. Staff were very friendly and food choices were nice and varied. First night mains (Balmoral Chicken & Steak n Ale pie were lovely) as were the deserts but now the negatives; even on a sunny May evening the lighting was too dim. My soup portion was tiny in a shallow dip in a plate for over £5 was disappointing. The main issue was our chateaubriand which at £60 Was the most expensive on the menu. We asked for mediym/we'll done and got medium/rare but in the dim light we only knew this because we didn't get steak knives and a normal knife couldn't cut it. It was also tasteless and fatty. My husband ate so.e but I couldn't and there was no staff to query/send back. There was also no comment when we asked for our bill and she took away the uneatten food. I feel as if we paid £60 for chips and an onion ring each. Also 2 rounds of drinks didn't come despite apologies and promises although removed from bill without issue. Shame as could be nicer

Stayed here for 2 nights - a Scottish castle- bound to be good. But alas, the customer service in the restaurant is sadly lacking. Seated fairly promptly, a drinks order was taken, and then I waited, and waited, and waited as more people were seated but no-one came within 10 feet to deliver my drink or take my order. After 15 minutes, I even displayed a clear sign on my ipad App asking to be served, yet no-one looked in my direction (in the centre of the room). Reluctantly, I had to get up an approach the till area, and despite asking where my drink was or when my order might be taken, no apparent urgency was done by any staff member. Not even an apology. Being in the Customer services industry myself (I write for a travel company), I know how important customer satisfaction is, and that whilst things can take time, you keep the customer informed and not just left to fend for themselves. It wasn’t even as if it was busy.

Service was terrible waited over half an hour between courses, had to ask to order a dessert, main meal Sunday Roast of chicken, pork and beef all of which we terribly over cooked, and we never got cauliflour cheese as on the menu. Ordered a nice bottle of red wine and having spent so much time waiting ordered another of the same. The second bottle was freezing, so I complained and was told 'that is why you should always taste the wine before pouring'! The Manager then offered to sit the bottle in hot water as all the wine is kept in the cellar and would be chilled. Not the first bottle though?? Needless to say we didnt order any more wine and left. Would not recommend and certainly wont be back.............very poor.

Service was not that great and dessert was forgotten about by staff. For three "burgers and chips and three desserts the price was £75. Afraid it was not worth the price or the wait.

Myself and my partner came here on Sunday night. My partner ordered the mushrooms for his starter and burger for main. I had soup of the day (which was tomato) and 'Mac and Bol' for my main. The portion sizes are very reasonable considering they are from a £25.00 set 3-course menu. The menu didn't make it clear that the Mac & Bol come with pasta so I ordered an extra side of chips. You won't need this!! The meatballs were huge and it was almost like having three round beef burgers to try and eat. That said, I managed two of the three and they were so good! I would definitely order these again next time I come. After our dinner plates were removed, we then chatted for over an hour as we waited on our desserts arriving (cheesecake for my partner and some ice cream for me). Eventually I had to stop a member of staff to ask where it was. She looked horrified (& terrified as I think it was her that had forgotten us) but she went away and return a few minutes later with our dessert. The kitchens were very busy that night so we did understand it can easily happen to anyone! If you're ever concerned you've been overlooked or forgotten, there's a chance you might have been so you should ask! Overall, we had a lovely meal and a relaxed/enjoyable evening. We are already making plans to return! :)

Used a deal which was £25 for a three course. Limited menu but food was nice and well presented. Had to wait a long time for dessert and an even longer time to get the bill. Drink prices a bit steep. Staff very pleasant

We had the choice of a limited meal as it was part of our hotel offer or pay extra for the main menu. Didn't look much different so we ordered from the included one. The choices weren't great and I ended up with a burger. My wife ordered the salmon. Portions were small and we ended up hungry later. not great.

We stayed overnight on 13th August (room review separate as nowhere near 5/5) and the food was excellent in the Grill Room. We had three courses all of which were prepared quickly and of a high standard. The service from the two waiters we had was excellent they were both extremely helpful and friendly, couldn’t have been any better in all honesty so thanks for that!

Ate dinner and breakfast. Price was reasonable for dinner, breakfast was included with daily room rate. Quality of food was below standards compared with what we were used to at other hotels or restaurants we ate in Scotland. Service provided good and workers were courteous.

We ate dinner here twice while staying at the hotel. The Grill Room pays a lot of attention to presentation, and some of the dishes like the roast salmon and the onion rings were delicious, but some were tasteless (seafood soup) or overcooked (sea bass.) The service is pretty disorganized and inexperienced. The atmosphere is a mixture of high-end eatery with fancy dishes and tour bus hotel restaurant. It was convenient for us, and not terrible, but not really a destination restaurant.

Dinner on first night was excellent from a three course menu there was lots of choice well presented and cooked. My favourite dessert ever was salted caramel panna cotta with toffee popcorn and edible flowers. The second night we chose from the al la caste menu and again the sea base was superb as were the shredded duck Bon bons with lime and cucumber pickle. All washed down with a reasonably priced Shiraz. Fab, and we will return.

The food here is ok at best. The starters (the salmon and the scallops) were a bit bland. I had the scampi pasta as a main which with a lot of salt and pepper were ok. The desserts were nice. The serving staff seemed a bit young and clueless about the food and wine. We had to ask two times for the candle on the table to be lit. It was a bit cold so we all had to wrap ourselves with scarves not to freeze to death. Just an ok experience. Would not go there again.

Ridiculously slow service our first evening meal we were served the most meagre portion of calamari for starter, honestly for £6 it was tiny. We also had over cooked and dry chicken on one night and the next we had raw lamb, which was taken to be refreshed, we had a side dish of cauliflower cheese which was on the plate at the time but was removed during refreshing but never replaced!!! 20 minute wait for a jug of water and a 40 minute wait for bar drinks compounded what was a massively below par evening meal not just on one occasion but on consecutive nights and we were not the only people dissatisfied.

So our family decided to take our mother to the The Grill Room for her 68th birthday. I had visited the hotel a number of years ago for Hogmany celebrations and had a great time. So thought it would be a suitable venue for our mother's birthday celebrations. At 8pm Sunday evening we arrived at the restaurant. It was immediately apparent that there had been a wedding that day at the hotel and the attendees filled the front foye and bar area next to the area. It was extremely noisy and filtered through into the restaurant dining area. I'm not against the idea of wedding parties, but the hotel really needs to consider a separate area for weddings and dining; so neither encroach on each others evening. We were hoping for a quiet night to enjoy our meal.I had made our reservation online and left comments regarding the nature of the evening celebrations. I thought this a very useful website tool for the hotel and gave a little personal touch, which I liked. However, upon reaching the dining room and providing our details to staff it appeared that this was probably the first time anyone had even looked at the reservation details. The staff member mentioned the reservation system was running slow due to how busy they were, but looking into the dining room noticed that half the tables were empty. So onto the fine dining experiece we were expecting. We were seated and ordered some drinks and water for the table and presented with the menu. The young lady that served us was nice enough and brought drinks in a reasonable amount of time to allow us to decide upon our orders.Firstly, we requested the bread platter for the table to share prior to starters arriving. The waitress informed us that they had no bread. I was kind of dumb struck, a fine dining restaurant that had no bread? It was only 8pm and they had no bread. They didn't know they were running low on bread? They couldn't have sent a member of staff out to get bread prior to running out? They couldn't bake bread?Next, my mother does not eat meat often, the whole blood thing is a real turn off for her. So she decided upon a nice chicken dish, which she promptly ordered. The balance of starters and main course were ordered too. Shortly thereafter, the waitress returned. "Sorry, we have no chicken.". No chicken...in a restaurant...I didn't know what to say. It's at this point, the waitress presented my mother with a different menu. From what I could see, it was a cut down version of the a la carte menu. Probably just a short order menu for quick food. But that is only my own observation. However, we hadn't even considered that menu because my mother had already had a second choice in mind; the lemon sole. The waitress took this order and left. Once more the waitress returned, "Sorry, no lemon sole". We decided to call it a night and leave. No bread. No chicken. No Lemon Sole. No good.I asked to speak to the Restaurant Manager who attended and was full of apology stating that he was unaware of the lack of food in the restaurant and he would takes this up directly with the Head Chef. He did offer to facilitate our night at one of their sister restaurants, but the whole affair of dealing with any restaurant in anyway associated with Airth Castle just did not fill me with confidence. So we passed on that offer. He thereafter took my contact details and informed me that Senior Management of the hotel would contact me directly to address our experience. We are now 8 days gone and still no email or call. Obviously customers negative experience is of no real concern to senior management at the hotel. It is obvious to me that the hotel's primary concern at this time of year is the wedding parties. After all, it is very lucrative and does go a long way to carry the hotel through the financial year. However, it is having a detrimental effect on the restaurant. From my observations, they were understaffed and that is from what could be seen front of shop. It's probably the same behind closed doors with kitchen staff being unable to best serve both the wedding party and the diners visiting the restaurant. I suspect that the reason for the kitchen not having any of the items ordered was because they were depleted by the wedding earlier in the day.I will not return, not even for a drink. One recommendation to people considering dining at the grill room. Call to make your reservation and ask if there is a wedding on...if there is a wedding on...book somewhere else.PS: we couldn't get another restaurant by the time we left and ended up back home with a takeaway. An otherwise great day of birthday celebrations ruined by Airth Castle. I hope Karma visits Airth Castle in the near future.

This was our first visit to Scotland. We stayed in a room in the actual Castle which absolutely fabulous. We had been driving most of the day (from Manchester) and were very tired upon arrival. Normally, we would venture out and grab something to eat at a local restaurant but as it was recommended by a friend who was also a local to the area and we just wanted to relax and have a few drinks, we decided to dined in. For the price we paid, the whole experience was really disappointing. The entire service for an appetizer, main course and desert took nearly 2 hours...105 minutes to be exact. The appetizer was a piece of toast and some spread, which we had to cut in half so we had a piece each. After about an hour after the appetizer the main course arrived. I ordered their burger. The bacon was cold and the cheese, while melted was also cold and the bun was soggy. The chips were cold and floury and the coleslaw tasted like something bought from Aldi. Frankly, I could have got a fresher burger at BK for a quarter of the price. My partner ordered the venison. The jus had dried on the plate and the meat was cold and tough as if it had been left out under the heat lights for half an hour. We sent our meals back and a short time later, received 2 more dishes. The venison was fine this time but the serving size was quite small. But my burger was exactly the same, with melted cold cheese and cold bacon. I didn't want to complain again as I was hungry and tired so put up with the meal. We were offered complimentary deserts, which was actually the best part of the meal but still left us underwhelmed with the whole experience. The service was slow and we had to ask twice for water at our table. The total bill was over £50 including a bottle of wine but we certainly didn't receive value for money. Breakfast the following morning was just as disappointing, although I did get to try haggis for the first time. Being a buffet, it was fairly typical of hotel breakfasts but I've had far better in establishments with less of a reputation. I doubt I'll be returning to The Grill Room in the future and wouldn't recommend it to anyone visiting the area.

We visited at 2.15pm and the restaurant was fairly quiet. Starters and main courses were good and service was fine. At this point it seemed as if there was a change of shift and only two male servers were on duty. it was warm in the conservatory as it was a rare sunny day and we moved through to the bar area to order desserts. It took some time to attract the waiters attention so that we could get the menus. We ordered desserts and after waiting 20-25 minutes my husband went over to them to see what was happening. Apparently the desserts were ready to come out from the kitchen but we decided to leave. There was confusion over the bill. We had 3 starters, 4 mains a bottle of Pinot Grigio and a pint of lager. Somehow this came to £100.45. We used a £100 voucher which had been a gift and after the poor service amazingly we had to pay the 45p. This is the first time that we have never left a tip anywhere and this is really the first negative review that I have written. We have dined here several times before and had no such problems. I did email the hotel with feedback as soon as we came home but surprisingly I have not had the decency of either an acknowledgment or a reply over 24 hours later. The experience was particularly embarrassing for us as we had two guests with us who were equally unimpressed.
