And it's certainly true of this place. The pub, It is a little dated inside but we were greeted by an extremely pleasant, welcoming and active barman with a North East accent. This guy is what made us stay in this pub most of the day and while we were a bit weary of the food initially those fears were completely unwarranted when we saw and tasted the delicious food. The barman really went above and beyond to greet everyone with the same level of enthusiasm and welcoming for the whole day we had begun to think it was put on but it wasn't and completely natural... This absolutely made the difference and despite him having a few more difficult demanding customers who wanted to be served in front of others who had been waiting.... The pub filled up and what a joyus friendly and fabulous day.. Made some good friends while there too. Will definately return when were back in Windermere. The cask ales are lovely too and they know how to keep their lines clean. The barmaid who came on to stand in picked up with this enthusiasm, overall a thoroughly enjoyable inexpensive experience I'd spent twice as much elsewhere the day before and didn't have half as an enjoyable time.

Called in for a few drinks on a Saturday evening prior to a meal at a local Indian. It wasn't too busy and Sky Sports was on with the football. Chatty barmaid and a couple of local cask draft beers available. Plenty room to sit down. Would visit again but wouldn't go out of our way to do so.

When we arrived at The Grey Walls, the first thing we found charming was the fact that reception was in the bar/pub part the hotel. Though it felt laid back, the service was quite efficient. Though we did not have a meal in the bar, we did have a drink there. It happened to be at a time when they were doing a trivia game. Of course, we knew very few of the answers because they were all about English facts and people. It was fun, however, to observe the other patrons take part. Though we didn't actually eat there, the food we saw coming out of the kitchen looked good. Our room was cozy and clean and the toilet flushed on cue, unlike the one in the hotel where we stayed prior to traveling to Windermere.

Friend ordered mussels they arrived - no fingerbowl so requested one.Was asked would you like water in? Erm yes please! And then No spare plate or bowl to put used mussels in Some mussels were not existent but they did provide extra half portion On a good note flat iron steak, hunters chicken and fish and chips were lovely Very expensive for basic food Needless to say wont be eating here again!

Went to eat here as dog friendly, but when we asked about the food, they said the chef hadn't showed up. From looking at the place & reading the reviews, it sounds like we had a lucky escape. It cost about £7 for 2 pints. The Pub was busy, but it's really dingy & needs a makeover! There a Poole table as you go in.

We went to this restaurant during a recent two week visit to the Lake District after seeing the good reviews on TripAdvisor. The place was very busy and they suggested we could eat in the pub rather than the integrated restaurant. We ordered drinks and food, but whilst waiting for the meal to arrive a dog roaming loose in the restaurant squatted and urinated on the carpet. We advised the bar tender who shrugged his shoulders and said 'It happens from time to time'! Our food arrived ten minutes later and was over-cooked; the gammon tasting like rubber. We left the food, paid up and left the restaurant. Although regular visitors to Windermere this was by far the worst meal we have had in the town and we will not be returning.

Visited here for a meal , I had steak and ale pie , which was acceptable , but my wife had coq au van ,which was advertised as coming with bubble and squeak mash ,but the chefs interpretation of this dish leaves a lot to be desired ,it was more like a bowl of pig swill ,and that is no exaggeration . It was a bowl of grey liquid with two tiny chicken drumsticks ,and what was supposed to be bubble and squeak mash ,WELL !!!! ,It was in the bottom of the dish covered in grey liquid , looked disgusting and in edible .We should have said somthing at the time .

We ate in the bar, as the restaurant area was closed. Excellent food -- wild boar and cider pie was a hit (no dodgy puff-pastry lids on reheated fillings to be found here), coq-au-vin just as good, and a hearty chicken burger made with a decent sized, good quality chicken fillet, not to mention nice chunky chips with a lively salad accompaniment. All washed down with a nice local beer. Very reasonably priced given the high quality of the food. Recommended.

Friday night, about 730pm. The restaurant was closed, which I was expecting what with this being out of season, so we ate in the bar. Typical sort of Lakeland bar, bit basic but interesting enough. Music choice wasn't really in keeping though, as it was a bit too 'techno'punk'. Vastly at odds with the locals who wanted to put Coronation Street on the TV!Anyway, good choice of steaks on offer, but certainly not cheap considering the surroundings! We ordered the Ribeye and the Sirloin, medium rare. No one else seemed to be eating which is always a worry. Ten mins later we notice one of the staff return from the local Tesco Express with a jar of what looked suspiciously like Bearnaise Sauce!Steaks themselves tasted weird, very meaty almost over-matured. Think they might have seen some time in a microwave as well. Chips were almost inedible, salad was drenched in Balsamic Vinegar, and veg option was almost as bad.Food in the pub over the road looked much better, although I'd suggest a trip down the road into Windermere if you want to find anything approaching a proper restaurant. One star awarded for the good choice of beers.I have a feeling some of the recent reviews may well be an 'inside job'!

Visited this restaurant after much discussion with my partner, checking out the best places on Trip Advisor, where best to eat in Windermere. We asked the bar attender if the restaurant was open, but as it was out of season, he said that they was only doing bar meals in the pub area. We decided to sit in the pub area and eat there. My husband ordered the home made soup (carrot and coriander). Absolutely beautiful, really thick and full of flavour with nice fresh bread. I ordered the Nachos, a meal in itself, really nice, cheesy and spicy and loads of flavour. We then ordered the 10oz Rump steaks. Best Rump steaks we have ever had. Cooked to perfection with the best homemade chunky chips ever. We both ordered an accompanying sauce, Pepper and Diane. Both really rich, with loads of flavour. I opted for the salad, which was just the best. No room for desert. Shame!! Full up!! The bar attender Sonic, was a real Gem, nothing was too much trouble for him, he was a real gentleman, making sure everything was to our satisfaction. Even the chef came out to the bar area and acknowledged us, saying our steaks would soon be with us, which I thought was very obliging. All in all, great place, great staff, great atmosphere. Great music on The Box. Shame the Monday night quiz didn't go ahead due to lack of numbers. PLEASE, it's a must. 12 out of 10. You won't be disappointed!!! Thank you to all.

We came for a meal here after reading the tripadvisor reviews and were a little surprised that it had received so many 5's!We went into the bar area and selected a table, on looking up we were being overlooked by some stuffed magpies which was a little odd and wouldn't be a problem were it not for the dust and cobwebs. there were wires hanging down from the ceiling which I presume is something to do with the 'big screen' advertised although there were no sporting events on this particular evening.we selected two starters which were not available so ended up with sticky ribs and marinated chicken wings which were just 'ok'. Although this is a 'steakhouse' there was only one steak on the list which my partner opted for and again this was okay. I opted for the grey walls burger which was very nice, a very meaty burger and lovely chips. All in all the food was good although overpriced and the surroundings let the place down as everything could do with an update and a good clean.

The bar manager was very accommodating with swapping side orders for my dietary needs. Although, he was very busy doing all job roles of waiter, bar man, and helping people, he was friendly and good at his job. The food was very nice and what I expected from a pub. My brother ordered a steak and it was cooked to his preference which it did, my husband ordered a pie and enjoyed it all and I ordered a vegetable lasagne with swapped chips. We visited there and to be honest, we got exactly what we expected. One reviewer commented on how dire the decor was, but this was just an ordinary independent tavern. The decor was pretty much like all others, with the wood beamed ceiling and little nic nacs placed on shelves and above the bar. I quite liked it, as pubs can begin to start looking all the same. But we visited for the food, and we had quite a wait. Took around 45 minutes for our main course to arrive without any sort of hint that there was a wait. I enjoyed my lasagne, but my gf was disappointed with her steak. Asked for it medium, but it came very well done. The puddings were very disappointing. At the time of our visit, I was reasonably happy with what we paid for, but the rest of the group wasn't. But after visiting a couple of other restaurants in the Windermere district over the weekend, I would probably wouldn't recommend it, if taken in comparison.

Having read the good reviews about the Grey Walls on TripAdvisor, I made a point of visiting during our recent stay in the Lake District.I had read that it was "dog friendly" and served great food - perfect! My partner, two children, pet dog and myself were greeted by a very friendly, pleasant landlord/manager who told us that our dog was welcome in the bar area, which was quite full on a busy Friday evening.Having found a table, sat down and finally, after choosing our food from the extensive and delicious sounding dishes on the bar menu, we were told by a very apologetic manager that there would be a 45 minute wait for the food as the restaurant had two large groups of diners who had just placed their orders! As we were all hungry after a very long day out and about in the area we reluctantly decided against ordering, but the manager very kindly told us about another restaurant nearby that was also dog friendly.I shall definitely look forward to returning to the Grey Walls if we do visit the area in the future.

The public bar appeared a typical well used local pub, when we ordered the food it was a bit like a comedy as the first two choices were not available. We decided on the soup of the day which was vegetable and when it arrived it was lovely with the warmed bread with it. For mains we decided on the two special pasts dishes an Arrabiata and a carbonara, both which when they came were thoroughly enjoyable, the Stella was very nice so had two. We had to wait for the food longer than normal, but this we put down to it being freshly made and was worth the wait, especially as it gave us a chance to enjoy a drink and chat.
