The Greyhound in Brentwood

This isn't my first review of this pub. It's a firm favourite of mine. I'd just like to give a shout out to Rihanna, our server today. As well as great service she made us feel very much at home.

Emily was amazing member of staff very helpful and a wonderful smile. Made my experience of the evening so much better

This is such a delightful country pub, with lovely, friendly staff. Food is always excellent, and their attention to allergy requirements is 10 out of 10. The rural location is very special, with grassy gardens at the front and back of the pub, perfect for summer days. Highly recommended!

Lovely food as always, would highly recommend

Not visited in a while, booked a table for dinner Monday evening. Clearly on arrival the place needs to be painted and tidied up, at the bar disappointed that all guest ales were unavailable leaving just the standard brewery fizz on tap. Table wasn't ready despite the restaurant not busy. Staff very helpful and polite, but clearly not enough of them. The menu hasn't changed in ages and several items were not available, leaving little choice but steak if you wanted dinner that wasn't a burger or pre made. Again the lady serving us was very polite and helpful, but the speed the kitchen works is slower than snail pace, the side dish of garlic mushrooms is the smallest three mushrooms I've ever seen, again the waitress was very helpful and did replace them, but clearly the quality that was here has gone. Best part of the meal was the coffee. Left disappointed and I doubt we will be returning.

Fantastic. Returned to this pub with the family and we had the same waitress by coincidence. She remember my FIL and even his previous order which was such a nice touch. Food always good and fresh. Highly recommend

I haven’t been to the Greyhound for years and didn’t recognise it. As stated by previous reviewers it does need quite a bit of tlc but it looks as though this is scheduled at some point. Our waitress was lovely and very helpful. Meals were all quite nice although my vegan dish - cottage pie- had a very small amount of veg to accompany it considering the price. A sign to the pub on Childerditch Lane would really help too as we struggled to find it, and this might also help with potential passing customers.

We had a lovely meal. Our waitress, Emily, was super-friendly and very friendly. A lovely evening. We will definitely be back soon!

Very good service, and good was excellent. Emily was very accommodating to everyone’s request and dealt with it really quickly and efficiently .

Came for lunch in the garden, nice clean area, lots of umbrellas. The server was smiley, polite and helpful. Lunch in the sun was lovely.

We've been coming to The Greyhound for many years. Always enjoy eating there as its traditional looking, albeit a bit tired looking on the outside, atmosphere is friendly and welcomes families with dogs too. The open fire is a bonus in winter time and the garden pleasant enough in the summertime. We got served by Rianna last night who was friendly and pleasant. The food is nice and presented well.

We visited the pub first time as a family of 8. Drinks, food and puddings were very good. The atmosphere is great. Looking forward to visit during summer and sit outside.

Cozy pub, perfect for warm winter meals.

Nice setting for a drink and kids to play in the beer garden, but food took 90 minutes to arrive and was pretty bad.

Cracking old country pub in a lovely setting, excellent service (handled our dietary needs and delayed arrivals brilliantly) and great food, my ribeye steak was a good bit of meat done to perfection - can't wait to go back!

Rianna was a star, she coped really well basically on her own

An enjoyable evening with friends. The food was very good & the waitress Rianna was great, very, very busy as the pub was packed & only three waiting staff. Rianna worked her socks off. They needed another member of waiting staff.

Practically empty at lunchtime. Food overcooked. When waitress asked if everything was OK we told her the food was overcooked and she just said "Thanks for letting me know".

My friends and I meet up here on a fairly regular basis, as it is a “halfway” place to meet. This is such a lovely place. Food is good. Today we were served by Emily, and despite being very busy - nothing was too much trouble, it was as if we were the only ones there. Emily was very attentive. The outside of The Greyhound could do with a bit of freshening up, and possibly the inside too - in readiness of the good weather.

We had lunch with 4 adults and 2 teens. Menu was varied, food was great, service friendly and helpful.

Arrived at the Greyhound for a friend birthday bash table was set but it’s was bitter outside & not much warmer in Starter pawn cocktail more lettuce than prawns & sea food sauce was none existent 😡 Wanted the steak pie gone ordered the chicken pie only one left which had been taken so ended up with fish & chips guess what couldn’t find the fish for the batter other guests asked to be changed l just wanted to leave l was ruddy freezing hence hardly touched my drinks

Lovely pub with a. Couple of open fires. Nice beer. Slow food is one thing but bringing my dish after other diners has finished smells of incompetence.

Food choices were extensive and what I really liked was the fact that there was a good range pricing, from very affordable light lunches food all the way to large dinner size meals. Atmosphere was nice and staff very friendly. I would say, on this occasion it did feel like they were a little short staffed as there was a number of times we were waiting for things beyond just the meals.

Always have a lovely time at the greyhound. Rory was very helpful and made us feel very welcome. The only thing I would say to improve is a better vegetarian choice but it chose two starters instead of a main

Such a lovely and atmospheric old building. The staff were very welcoming, the food was first class, as was the service. We will be returning soon.

Lovely, dog-friendly pub with real fire. Added the following later. Came back a couple of weeks after the initial review after a nice chilly walk with mum and dog to warm up at a table right by the fire and have a light snack (beef brisket sandwich and a ham and melon, with some chips). The food was beautifully presented and the chips were the best I've had in a few years (chunky, skin on, really crispy on the outside and light and fluffy in the middle)

Lovely meal here on 2nd Jan. We’ were seated by the lovely open fire.which was perfect. The food was all nice and good value.. The man looking after everyone (might have been the manager) was all on his own with no other staff so while things took a bit longer we were happy to wait because he was working so hard managing the entire place . Will definitely be back . Thanks for a lovely experience .

The food is great and even though some items weren't available, I still ordered something that was tasty. Dogs are welcomed which is a great benefit to us as it's our Corgi's favourite establishment

Absolutely fantastic! We were served by Emily who was outstanding. She was attentive and friendly and we were made to feel so welcomed. She was a breath of fresh air. The food was fresh, hot and tasty. We will definitely return and a special thank you to Emily for making our visit so special.

Overall a bit disappointing. Lovely fire and lots of fluffy friends. Arrived at a time when it was a bit busy, waitresses seemed a little overwhelmed/distracted. Repeatedly had to ask for water. Ordered a main, 15 mins later was told not available. Had a dessert later, Ordered a cheesecake and a white chocolate dome. Later told no cheesecake, it's defrosting and chocolate dome was milk not white and when we asked about it they said sorry we ran out, which is fine but you have to communicate these things when you take the order. Overall lovely pub, but the service let it down.

A lovely gastro pub set in the Essex countryside just a mile or two from the A127. Dog friendly restaurant serves a delicious menu in a friendly & relaxed atmosphere. Had a very enjoyable Boxing day lunch with my Sister's family, our parents and our two dogs. Bramley apple & mince pie crumble was superb!

Absolutely dreadful . Had to leave . Booked Xmas menu for 5 . My prawn cocktail starter was off and tasted disgusting, the scallop starter was watery and pre frozen . Even the turkey isn’t cooked on site but didn’t even wait for that . Not prepared to get food poisoning from prawns 😡

DISAPPOINTED Booked 6 months in advance for a meal with my family for Christmas Day. There was No Christmas Cracker and hardly any Christmas decorations. It took 1and 1/2 hour for our starter to come up!!! And the whole meal which we had pre selected took 3 HOURS. The manager or staff never apologised or told us the reason why we had to wait so long. Unfortunately based on this experience I would never go back or recommend.

Arrived to be seated and then waited 20 minutes for drinks (one wine and one Pepsi) starters were nice albeit delayed and that’s where it ended, beef wellington looked like it had been put in the oven when Diana was still knocking about and the whole turkey dinner was lukewarm at best, No Xmas crackers even after asking for some and ended up getting desserts to take home as by that point the absolute shambolic day had gone too far. I did get a partial refund but actually feel like I’m due compensation for my time to be honest. If this review can stop atleast one family ruining their Christmas in 2025 I’ll sleep easier. Will NEVER return.

Me and my daughter have an amazing time together at the pub. We had dinner and was delicious also the staff was outstanding they looked after us all the time.
