Food was average I had a curry and my daughter had a childrens menu Fish fingers meal which she mostly left because she didn't like it. Price was fair for what you got. £8.95 for a curry, £5.50 for childrens meal which included a small drink and I had a Tea £2.50 = £16.95. Biggest concern was that the female member of staff would not let my daughter use the bathroom unless she went with her. Took her to the gents but said not clean and lock broke. Of course my daughter don't go with her as she is a stranger to her. felt uncomfortable. But not a very considerate at all. And would not recommend any one to go there. Unless you want to deal with staff who have attitude problems.

We come here EVERY week as a couple or we come with friends or family and sometimes both. The food is absolutely amazing whether it's midweek or Sunday dinner. 10/10 to chef David and coworkers. the bar/restaurant staff are so friendly, kind and nice. Joanne makes the best Blood Mary drink. Hilda the owner, Matthew, Alex and all the rest of the staff are brilliant all efficient and lovely genuine.people. We highly recommend eating here or just for a quiet drink. In a lovely quiet area and all the regular locals are all nice too.

I’ve had lovely Sunday lunches here before. Not sure why but today wasn’t quite as good, the normally melt in the mouth beef wasn’t up to normal standards, not sure if it was a different chef or different meat supplier but although it tasted nice I left half as it was hard to cut and I eventually gave up. Rest of meal was lovely. Whatever’s changed needs to change back to how it was last month then it will be perfect.

4 of us had Sunday lunch, I had the beef, 2 had pork and one had lamb. The service was polite and efficient even though we had turned up early. I had a starter of parsnip soup with crusty bread and it was delicious. The main course was excellent with delicious meats, plenty of veg , roasties Yorkshire pud and gravy. The deserts had by the other 3 looked lovely and they all enjoyed them. The atmosphere was very friendly and everything was clean and comfortable. I’ll be back there again soon.

After a stroll at Herrington park we needed our Sunday lunch, so we decided to try the Grey Horse. It was a really good choice! There were various choices and we all were very impressed by the mains. Succulent meat with gravy, Yorkshire puddings and a boat load of fresh veg!! I couldnt fault it. We even decided at puddings which were also tasty. The prices were very reasonable for the quality of food. I would definitely recommend here. The Sunday lunch I have had in ages. The staff were very friendly and efficient.

We absolutely love this gorgeous little place, it really is one of those traditional, ‘hub of the community’ type pubs with friendly regulars and a cosy atmosphere at all times of day. The staff are some of the loveliest people you could meet and always go out of their way to make sure you’re looked after – nothing is too much trouble. And the food is consistently fantastic!! Especially the Sunday roasts, which are just outstanding. Herrington Park and Penshaw Monument are just around the corner, and the pub has a designated dog-friendly area at the front. There really is a proper ‘village pub’ feel to the place that is lacking all too often these days. Not to mention the impressively well-stocked bar! What more could you want :) Thank you so much and see you very soon xx

Just had one of the best mixed grills ever. Cooked to perfection by the very talented new chef at this great village local. The grill consisted of Pork Steak, Gammon Steak, Rump Steak, Lamb Chop, 2 Cumberland Sausages, Onion Rings, Fried Egg, Grilled Tomato, Sautéed Mushrooms and Home-made Chips. All items were very good quality and presented well. I would highly recommend the mixed grill and on the looks of it the new chef certainly knows how to cook....

Having heard decent reports of the food we decided to give this place a try. Received a lovely welcome but it went down hill from there. We must have picked the day when the chef was off. Despite being on the menu, the ‘chef’ didn’t actually know how to make a club sandwich! It was terrible as was the beef and ale pie which was over cooked and very heavy on the gravy salt. Smelly and dated, unfortunately this will be the last visit and sorry but I would not recommend it at all.

We drove from the coast toward Penshaw monument and saw a sign to this pub restaurant which took us into a village estate with the building tucked away at the back, over-looking a valley behind it and leading up to the historic Penshaw Monument. We ordered lamb and chicken Sunday lunches and have genuinely not tasted a better one than this. The meat was lean and perfectly prepared and the vegetable assortment arrived with a bowl of chopped leeks, green beans, carrots, cabbage and two types of potato. The gravy arrived separately and was really fantastic - so good we asked if the kitchen staff could share their recipe. This is a quaint 'salt of the earth' eatery with really wonderful waiting and bar staff who converse and made us feel very welcome. We liked that the location was tucked away but with easy enough walking distance up around the corner to the monument attraction. We will return here and wholeheartedly suggest taking a visit - if you feel up to it you can walk your dining experience off by tackling the nearby hill which leads up to a much visited historic destination.

Arrived at the Grey Horse, unaware of opening times, (it was 11.30) but as the door was open I went in with my colleague, a lady held the door open. We saw a man at the bar, we were looking around when we heard "who are you" - to which I replied I beg your pardon? He said again "Who are you?" and my colleague said "erm customers" and was simply told "we're not open til 12" - Charming what a welcome, needless to say we didn't hand around until opening time and I most definitely won't ever be back!

The wife and I lunched here last Wednesday - she ordered vegetable soup to start, I chose corriander and carrot with bread roll and butter - fabulous. For the main, wife had scampi while I had pork sausages, fries and garden peas. The sausage were enhanced with herbs and tasted really good - so much so that I asked where they were sourced: a farm shop not more than 1000 metres away! Our party arrived 5m before our appointed time. The gentleman behind the bar looked slightly puzzled when we said we were booked in for Sunday lunch but asked us to be seated. One hour later we finally were given our table . When we ordered we were told there was no lamb left and only 1 chicken. One of our party then chose the vegetarian but was then told that was sold out too. Eventually we managed to order and get our food which was average. Pudding menu came and again only 2 brownies were available so limited choice. We advise that if you go for Sunday lunch go early for a good choice and then hopefully you wont be left waiting for an hour.

Stopped off on a wet and thoroughly miserable night. We hadnt eaten at this restaurant before. We were greeted with a smile by a lady working behind the bar, who pointed to the restaurant. A waiter, who was probably the owner of the restaurant showed us to our table, brought us the menu, and asked if he could get us a drink. There was 2 or 3 tables occupied, but the restaurant, although small, started to fill up. As mentioned, the restaurant is quite small, and sparcely decorated, but had a nice ambience and atmosphere when it got busy. The food was nicely presented and tasty, and with 2 courses each and a bottle of wine, came to approximately £42.00. which we thought was reasonable value. The menu is primarily Italian influence.

Visited here for lunch with my friend. We were both a little disappointed with the happy hour menu. The starters were no cheaper than on the main menu and the main courses were only pizza or pasta. We ordered starters off the main menu, which we both really enjoyed. However neither of us enjoyed our pasta mains. The carbonara being greasy and bland. The lasagne being very thick mushy pasta with very little bolognese and instead a ladle of tomato pasta sauce over the top. Our first visit didn't bowl us over, so we'd be very unlikely to return, when there is very good competition in the area.

Having decided to visit the grey horse after reading the reviews I have to say my wife and I were not at all dissapointed. The bar area itself is very warm and welcoming with a nice atmosphere, so we had a couple of drinks before we were shown through to the Italian restaurant area. The dining room isnt all that big so I would advise to book in advance. We were given a menu, in fairness not the largest menu but something to suit all tastes, as well as the specials board. We both opted for potato skins with a dip, mains were Tagliatelle bolognese and I opted for Penne Pasta Arrabiatta. Both the starters were very nice and the pasta dishes were the best I have had the pleasure of eating, very creamy and the taste was delightful. My wife chose warm chocolate browny while I went for an irish coffee, add to this a drink each as well as a bottle of house white, the whole bill came to £43, to say we were pleasently surprised would be an under statement. We will be paying another visit without any shadow of a doubt. Ideal for families, couples or for a group of friends.

It was a Tuesday afternoon at 2pm so we were the only ones in. I really hope this restaurant does well as I can't fault anything about our visit.

We have often ate in this pub and the food was always good but a little surprised when it was relaunched into the Italian Kitchen. Our first meal here was in the newly refurbished restaurant within the pub. It had been nicely decorated and had a good cosy feel to it. A reasonably priced menu and good food was had all round. Wine list could be improved on but other than that I would thoroughly recommend this place.

We had heard excellent reviews about the new Italian Restaurant and were not disappointed!!! There were 9 of us booked for Friday night and it was fabulous. The atmosphere and service were first class. The food was delicious, and the prices were very reasonable. Cannot wait to return, well done to all concerned.

Heard great reviews on this place so decided to give it a try for a works retirement lunch. 13 arrived for lunch and it was good to see that they had revamped the restaurant area and created a lovely homely feel. Most of us ordered from the specials menu and there was plenty of choice. Orders arrived quickly and the food was piping hot. Only had 1 person serving but he managed to serve us all at the same time. Main courses were all very nice. The pizzas looked authentic Italian and the seafood pasta was to described as excellent. I asked for extra chilli on me pasta but I couldn't taste any at all and it did leave it a little bland for my liking. Overall it was a very good lunch and the bottles of house wine were reasonably priced. Will definitely be returning.

Party of 10 on Saturday night. First visit to the new Italian restaurant for all of us. Some of us had been years ago and remembered The Grey Horse as a nice local for a few beers and had no great expectations for the night. So ... we were all delighted with the food and service we received.10 starters and 10 main course with no complaints can't be bad.I had the steak which was a lovely piece of meat.Very quaffable house wines for under a tenner was terrific value. We will definitely be back.

It was nice to see that Jimmy and Jacqui are still running the bar and helping out at the Italian Kitchen who now run the restaurant. Sunday lunch is still served from 12 to 5 with the Italian dishes if you prefer. I went for the beef and the boss went for the chicken. They came piping hot with yorkshires, mash, roasted potatoes, parsnip and veg. The gravy was delicious. I was concerned as the food previous was superb but I can say that standards have not slipped and I will have this back on my favourite for Sunday lunch.

We visited with friends and we weren't disappointed. We arrived early so we could have a few drinks in the bar which had a lovely friendly atmosphere. The restaurant was small and cosy. We had mixed meats, bread and olives to share which was delicious before our starters! We then had the goats cheese and prawns for starters and everyone commented on how good it was. For mains we had steaks (the lads were very impressed) breaded chicken and pasta with chicken all again delicious. For dessert we had a variety of Italian desserts to share and again - delicious. The brothers who own it are very professional, experienced and passionate about what they do. It's only been open a few weeks and I can guarantee once word gets round how good it is you will end up having to book well in advance. We can't wait to go back and already planning more visits with family and friends

Visited on spec for tea on Friday evening. We were the second ones in but we weren't alone for long. We were soon joined by other diners with the same idea. We had potato skins and a garlic bread with tomato sauce to start followed by tagliatelle bolognaise and a chicken and mushroom pizza between us.The food was superb as was the service. This is only week 3 of the Italian Kitchen @ The Grey Horse and if the quality of food and service is anything to go by it will be a winner. The meal was washed down by a bottle of house white at just under a tenner.I read others saying it is worth a visit...well it really is. At these prices why bother ordering a take away?It also has the advantage of being in a pub, so if you like you can enjoy a drink either before or after your meal.

We called into the Grey Horse for one of their fabulous pub-grub lunchtime meals but were thunderstruck to discover one of our favourite places had completely changed their direction and become an Italian restaurant instead...!We decided to give it a try anyway and discovered that, although we'd lost an old friend, we'd found a new place we think we're going to love just as much. The dining area has been spruced up to give a bistro feel but retains the warmth and cosiness we'd always enjoyed. The food was excellent quality, very good value for money and delicious. The service was also superb.I think we'll be coming back to try the place on an evening very soon indeed.A fond farewell to the old place but an enthusiastic welcome to the new one.

We ate here for Sunday Lunch - The food (and food portions) are truly outstanding. We started with a mixed garlic pizza - fantastic start with loads of flavour. 3 of the group opted for the Sunday lunch (beef) and I had the king prawns in a tomato and garlic sauce - all meals were absolute perfection. We finished with a fantastic desert (of which I cant remember the name (photo attached). The service both in the restaurant and the bar were exceptional. I would highly recommend the Italian Kitchen @ The Grey Horse....We will definitely be back

Wow.....Jimmy and Jac always turned out great food but this place has just gone up another notch! Great food and very reasonable....fresh seafood at the risotto was to die for which is not the easiest of dishes to get right...and all cooked by a real Italian chef who is obviously passionate about what leaves the kitchen. Get in soon because its a little gem and will start to get busy quickly.....Well done Grey Horse finally something different in the area.

I highly recommend this place. I went today with my friend who is a bit of a cake addict, and she said it was the best Cherry Bakewell Tart she has ever had. The selection of cakes available was amazing, and she took a good selection home with her. I had the Peanut Butter slice, it was delicious. Cake was light and fluffy with just the right amount of peanut butter cream. We both had a pot of tea with out cakes which went perfectly. The best thing about this lovely little cake shop, is the friendly, helpful and polite staff.

The fat Buddha cocktail was the best cocktail I’ve ever had. The food was so yummy and our waitress was lovely. It’s a little hard to find because it’s behind a cafe.
