The Gretel has recently been reopened by new management who, I understand, used to run The Fleece in Selkirk. My husband and I went for lunch much in a Saturday for our wedding anniversary. The staff were really welcoming as soon as we walked in. The tables are spaced out nicely and the dining room area is attractive. The menu was interesting and it took us a while to decide what to have. In the meantime I had a glass of wine and my husband had a pint of the IPA which he said was very good. In the end we decided on the baked goats cheese with chilli marmalade and sliced baguette and the haggis Bon Bon’s for starters. Main courses were gressingham duck breast with blackberry sauce and haddock and chips. Both were again lovely. We finically decided on creme brûlée and sticky toffee pudding to complete our meal. Would definitely recommend and we’ll be back one evening for cocktails.

Disappointed the attuide of the staff, they are offering a service where you can bring young children whom they provided high chairs so there will be always be a certain amount of mess but they complained that there was a bit of mess on the floor with foule language as I was tidying up the mess on the floor using my own baby wipes!! then I left then they offered my mum kitchen roll to finish tidying up the floor after we have paid and tipped- will not be recommending this place to ANYONE and will not be back!!

Definitely would not recommend this place. The carpet going up to the restaurant has not just seen better days it is absolutely filthy, really bad first impression. The menu leaves Much to be desired, my meal of king prawn salad consisted of 5 prawns with a handful of rocket and a couple of strawberries, ( had bigger starters in other places) and the pudding of cheese cake , the base was so hard you could not eat it. In general the menu read like a burger and salad bar.

We have been to the Gretel before for brunch and for drinks but hadn’t been since Covid. We popped in for breakfast and a coffee on Saturday. We both had the mini breakfast and it was lovely - sausage, fried egg, bacon, haggis, black pudding and toast. Plenty to fill us up. Coffee was tasty and nice and hot. We’ve booked to go for breakfast on Common Riding Friday and are really looking forward to it. Would recommend.

This is a new venture so we were really looking forward to trying it and let me tell you it did not disappoint, we were greeted outside by the doorman and directed inside to be instantly greeted and directed to by another charming girl to where the restaurant is, to again to be greeted and shown to our table. Our meal was amazing. I am gluten free and was delighted to have lots of options, and I mean lots.... I had a hard time deciding... I eventually settled on the fish and chips... cause gluten free fish and chips are soooooo hard to get in this area. My husband is a carnivore and had the biggest steak with all the trimmings which he said was cooked to prefection and he ate it all!!!! ... Now !!!! let me tell you about the Eaton Mess... Oh my word!!! it is the best we have ever tasted and we shared it... next time there will be no sharing, unless we decide to have one and a half each !!!! Fabulous Thank you to all the team at the Gretel for great service and great food. Can't wait to return...

We booked a table here for dinner to celebrate our anniversary whilst we were staying at the adjacent suites. The restaurant is in a converted mill building and very spacious and modern in design. Staff were very friendly and welcoming and we were quickly seated . When discussing the menu staff went to great lengths to say how good certain dishes were . We decided to order the roast dinner and the chicken and ham pie. It was a bit of a wait for the meal especially when there was only one other table occupied. When the meal arrived it proved to be disappointing , the beef in the roast dinner was very chewy , the pie was mainly ruff puff pastry and little filings and the turnips served with both meals were so solid you could not stick a fork into them and they were inedible . When we raised this with the staff one said they were onions? and the other said oh sorry that's a shame I will raise it with the chef. We decided to order dessert my husband ordered a sticky toffee pudding which was good , and I ordered a trifle panacotta . Turned out to be a panacotta , with jelly on the bottom and sprinkles on the top. More like a school pudding than a two rosette restaurant meal . The other annoying thing was the repetitive "lift" music being played loudly throughout the evening. Cost nearly £80 for a bread & oil starter for 1, 2 courses and 2 small glasses of wine. I think the restaurant thinks it is better than it actually is.

Great Food and Amazing Experience! Had an awesome time here! The food was delicious, and the staff was super friendly. One tip - if you’re a fan of spice, be sure to let them know when you order. They’ll make it extra spicy if that’s your thing! Overall, a great spot for flavorful meals and a fantastic atmosphere. Definitely recommend!
