We decided to give the Green Lantern a try, after not visiting for a very long time. Disappointed to say that it felt unusual to have a cafe serve coffee from a vending type machine that you might find in an old petrol station. Was insipid. We ordered a baguette and a toasted sandwich. The bacon was rubbery, think it may have been cooked earlier and warmed up, and it wasn’t very toasted! Such a shame, but we wouldn’t visit again.

Where do I start. Food was amazing. Atmosphere was amazing. I have a problem though I came in with a 2 yr old bought cartoon of apple juice no straw. And then when asked if u had fruit shoots told no. Asked for a beaker and got told glasses are over there. Was wondering if you could please invest in plastic beakers. Glasses aren’t safe for a 2 yr old. Many thanks and the place is beautiful. We will be back though. Everything else was amazing.

We went in for breakfast, the prices were good but the breakfast was disappointing. Small breakfast was 1 sausage, 1 bacon, 1 egg, 1 fried bread. The quality of sausage was poor, not pleasant tasting and hard, the bacon, I presume was deep fried was swimming in fat and the horrible taste wouldn’t leave my mouth for a long while after. No toilet facilities they were in the pannier market which is about 5 min walk, ok unless your part way through eating a meal could cause an issue. Though the staff were polite and service was quick the cakes looked lovely but the breakfast put us off buying.sadly I won’t be returning.

Went there for a bite to eat, seemed to be the only place open in the town on that day ( Monday ) They are dog friendly which is a added bonus. Menus were exstensive which was a suprise. We had cakes and scones. Only issue i had was my scone disintegrate when i tried to cut them in half. Lots of butter cream and jam thou. Service was great.

Food was ok and reasonably priced. However although there were four tables(16 seats) we were told we had to use the toilets at the pannier market 5 minuites away in the rain. Then the children at the next table, related to the staff, were taken upstairs to the toilets. I too had children with me. Unimpressed.

We visited this cheerful little cafe/bakery years ago for crumpets but this time, fortunately for us it was the right time of day for coffee and cake. Two lattes, an eccles cake and a lemon tart later we left just as impressed as last time. Very good value and delicious cakes, the servers were very friendly too. Glad we came back.

I don't get to Great Torrington very often, but when I do, I visit the Green Lantern. The last time I was there was a few years ago and it was quite by chance that we got our sandwiches and coffee there. Not only was the food excellent, there was plenty of it and I had to do a double take because the price was so reasonable. I went back there yesterday and the prices are still just as good and the food still just as excellent. I really should find more excuses to be in Great Torrington in search of food.

Awful in just about every way. Horrendously rude staff that tut when you dare to ask for a teaspoon to stir your tea (you must request each sachet of sugar from behind the counter). The food is processed rubbish, pre-cooked cheap sausages, grease-laden fried bread and undercooked eggs. Felt really sorry for the table next to us that called ahead to order their breakfast m, only to be told that “as they phoned up they could not eat in the cafe and must takeaway. Attitude of the staff was as bad as I have seen, arguing with and about customers in earshot of everyone, moaning when customers are undecided when ordering and just a general attitude of customers being an inconvenience. Could not wait to get out and will never return.

A quick decision to skip the catering queues at RHS Rosemoor and take a look at Great Torrington which found us in The Green Lantern Cafe. It very much has its own style of country charm and it was very winning. Its plain and simple but its one of those places that just has that little something that makes it stand out and be memorable. Not only did we sample an excellent cream tea in the cafe...we also couldn't bypass the Bakery counter and took a few treats home too. All of which were of the same high quality. The Green Lantern seems very much 'home grown' and you can tell that there's a lot of personal investment going into both the baking/cooking and customer service. Interestingly.....for the price of an RHS Rosemoor cream tea for two (then tea is extra)....we had one cream tea (with a pot of tea) ....a large freshly baked sausage roll with salad garnish...and a filter coffee....no waiting and great service. Then.... from the Bakery....two pasties....a chocolate chip loaf cake....an almond and cherry cake bar...a tip for the waitress and still have change! (RHS Rosemoor is delightful and a great place to enjoy a picnic....but the catering at The Green Lantern is better by a country mile)

This is really Great Torrington's undiscovered gem. The bakery and cafe is situated in the heart of the town. It's ran by a local family and employs local people from the area who are all really helpful and friendly. Especially Roy who is known to the locals as granddad who is well into his 90s and still taking orders in the cafe! Cafe is a very small but welcoming, there is a friendly atmosphere with locals and visitors all chatting away to each other. The green lantern's menu isn't extensive but provides very very good value for money. The full English breakfast includes everything you can think of, beautifully cooked and you get this all for £2.90!!The bakery provides lots of delicious cakes and savouries all at very reasonable prices. I am addicted to their pasties and sausage rolls which are at amazing prices a pasty is 60p and a small sausage roll is 40p. They don't make them like this any more. This cafe has great charm - the building, the staff and the patron himself who is a wonderful character - quite unique and an institution in Torrington's pretty town square. The menu offers a big choice or rather lots of variations on a theme - probably best described as traditional English breakfast caff fare. Ingredients are basic - none of your free range organic style here - but it's the amazing value and old style charm that you should visit for. Very family friendly although very popular with the older generation too. After enjoying a big breakfast we have often finished off with cherry pie and clotted cream or chosen something sweet from the bakery. Long may the Green Lantern last - please don't change!

When we go out for a picnic or just to pack something up for the day we buy food from them and take it with us .I find it more economical then buying it from supermarkets and making it your self .When I was last there in April I found that the business is up for sale Roy told me that he would like to retire sometime in the next year.and at 95 who can blame him .May be one of the family members will take it on who knows .When you visit Torrington and before he retires why don't you pop in for cuppa and say hello he will be very pleased to see and chat to you.

Green lantern cafe, attached to the bakery of the same name, serves cooked breakfasts, sandwiches, hot meals and burgers. It's traditional and service wasn't instant, but good food never is. A great place to take breakfast and spend some time listening to the locals order their baked good and, over Easter weekend, be told the tradition behind bakeries opening om Good Friday when others shops remain closed. Tea is available in a cup, mug or pot at the bargain price of only 50/55/90pence. (April 2015)

You don't often find places like this any more. Proper old fashioned bakery with a small cafe area which is still family run. Lovely simple cafe food not to mention the bread, rolls, cakes and pasties in the bakery, and all at extremely good prices. Roy has been there 'forever', which is all part of the old world charm and their meringues are to die for. If you're ever in Torrington, make sure you pay them a visit.

Warm welcome by the staff especially Roy with his historic stories of D-Day. Telling us how he started work life in the clay pits at 14. To order he asked us to write it down which was great to get us involved. Food was fantastic and good portion sizes. The prices were fantastic 5 of us for tea and cake cost us £5!! Don't be put off by dated decor it just adds to the traditional atmosphere. Highly recommend and defiantly would return.

Still talking about our hour spent here. We were tourists and were chilled. With the family including a 20 month year old. Roy (I have found out his name from Trip Advisor) served us. He is best described as a (more than reasonably) sprightly, engaging, personable 92 year old!!! He will stop to tell you of his war experiences if asked. He asks you to write down your order. Different but fun. The prices here are ridiculously low (see photo) and I take it that he just enjoys providing a service to the local community. Quite refreshing in the present day and age. One delightful man from a visitor's point of view but I may have taken up too much of his time and it would be great to find out how the staff feel about him. Quite a bit of chocolate in the hot chocolate that took quite a bit of dispersion but who cares. Great value in meeting a great character. I do hope that heis/they are still in business.

Really lovely place with excellent customer service. Yummy food - all 7 of us VERY happy with our different meals. Reasonably priced too. Happy to help and accommodate. We’ll be back next time we visit Bideford! Thank you.

I popped in to the Secret Garden Cafe hoping to have a light lunch with my daughter for a special treat - we had been given a £15 voucher to spend and had been really looking forward to our visit. However, it was not the lovely lunch we were hoping for… When we went in, there was a bit of a wait for a table. One of the waiting staff popped out into the garden to see if a table was free there. The older man in the kitchen spoke very rudely to him saying a rather aggressive manner, “you should know if there’s a table free if you could only do your job properly!” The poor guy (who was probably only late teens) looked really upset. While we were waiting for a table, I chatted to another staff member and showed her my gift voucher saying we were excited to finally be able to use it as we had been given it for Christmas. The man in the kitchen then demanded to have a look at it. He said that we couldn’t possibly use the voucher as he only provides laminated vouchers and ours was just on a piece of paper. He implied that we had printed it off ourselves! He then questioned me (in a very abrupt and abrasive manner) for about 5 minutes via the female staff member, wanting to know where I had got the voucher and kept repeating that he only ever gives out laminated ones. I wasn’t really sure what to say! He then asked the female staff member to write down a note about the voucher in their book and take my name and phone number! He said I couldn’t use the voucher until “it had been investigated.” I felt like a criminal! It was also very embarrassing and uncomfortable as everyone in the cafe was staring at my daughter and I! I was then given a menu and told that someone would be over to take our order. I said no thank you, and we walked hastily out. I won’t be back. My auntie (who gifted me the voucher) has been conned out of her £15 so if you are considering buying vouchers from here as a gift, I would say don’t bother, as you won’t be able to use them!

What a lovely coffee shop. Friendly staff, excellent taste in music (Taylor Swift). Clean and bright cafe. Hope small businesses like this come through the energy crisis, would be a shame to lose this type of establishment.

Lovely beachside cafe, great place for a good breakfast. Other than breakfast it's the usual 'something and chips' unimaginative menu. Clean and tidy, toilets across the road, disabled friendly and dogs welcome. What seriously needs attention is the staff, very slow at clearing and more interested in each other than the customers. I asked for black coffee with separate cold milk, which needed much explaining, then got black coffee with separate HOT milk. I had paid up and left and my table had still not been cleared. It's an OK spot but with a bit of effort could be the talk of the town
